F TURKEY NEWS Turkey Worried as Tourist Arrivals Drop

Turkey’s tourism industry faces declines in tourist arrivals and hotel occupancy rates this year. According to sector representatives, the holy month of Ramadan and continuing cold weather conditions are also the reasons for the slowdown. “Sector representatives and hoteliers have not been offered support by the state. The government said various support would be given to lure more Russian tourists to Turkey, but as sector representatives, we do not know whether this support was offered or would work,” said the vice president of the

Turkish Hoteliers’ Federation (TÜROFED), Sururi Çorabatır. He said the number of employees at the federation decreased from 450 last year to 350 this year due to the declining tourist numbers. “We may slash the figure to 300 unless the figures improve” he said. Çorabatır said the number of European tourists visiting Turkey was decreasing as well. “We have seen some 300,000 fewer tourists in the Mediterranean coast of Antalya compared to last year” said TÜROFED head Osman Ayık. This is also the case for the Aegean provinces, according to sector representatives. The Aegean district of Bodrum hosted 12 percent fewer tourists in May compared to the same month in 2014. The occupancy rate of the hotels is around 80 percent in Istanbul, but around 70 percent in coastal areas, according to sector representatives. “The number of Italian tourists visiting Istanbul in the first five months of the year decreased by 17 percent from last year, Russian tourists by 16 percent and Spanish tourists by 8 percent. The number of Iranian tourists, however, increased by 35 percent in the first five months of the year compared to the same period 2014” said Small Hotels Association President Ömer Faruk Boyacı.

Tourist Arrivals to Istanbul in May Despite decline in tourist arrivals to Turkey’s popular summer destination of Antalya, the country’s biggest and most populous city of Istanbul continues the upward trend in tourist arrivals. Recently named as the world’s most popular 5th destination at MasterCardGlobal Destinations Cities Index, Istanbul welcomed more than 4.5 million foreign tourists in the first 5 months of 2015. Istanbul Culture and Tourism Directorate announced 9.4 percent increase in the number of tourists visiting the city in May 2015 compare to May 2014. Total arrivals from January to May increased by 6.9 percent. Euroleague Basketball Celebrates 15th Anniversary in Istanbul

Euroleague Basketball marked its 15th anniversary by thanking all clubs, leagues, partners and fans for their support and commitment through the years. ECA Board and ECA Shareholders meetings this week was held in Istanbul. A decade and a half later, the Turkish Airlines Euroleague has multiplied by many times its fan base, media exposure and economic growth as it looks forward to a future full of optimism and high expectations. Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Temel Kotil, Turkish Airlines Vice-Chairman & CEO said, “Thank you very much for having the 15th anniversary of the Euroleague in Istanbul. Also, all the best for the next 15 years. Also thanks to Fenerbahce for being in the Final Four. I personally pray for all the teams, for their success, but I will pray extra for Fenerbahce. Life is based on competition. Some type of competition, like in Africa between lions and gazelles, is a different one. But the best competition is in sports. When I am watching the Euroleague or other sports activity, I feel like the guys who are playing have wireless communication by heart, you know? And through this, it’s bringing us the best between the winners of these games. “As an airline business, we are very similar. And our teams, when they are serving on the plane, they only worry about the feeling of the passengers. They are our boss and we approach them that way. So we’re seeing here that sports and the airline business are very similar. In this way we are honored to sponsor for five years until now the Turkish Airlines Euroleague and in the coming five years we continue, from today until 2020.” İrfan Önal, Director General of Promotion, Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism said, “Tourism, culture and sports have a common element and a unique interaction. The synergy

between them contributes to the interaction of different communities and enables them to understand each other more clearly, and that’s what creates a more peaceful world. The Turkish Airlines Euroleague is definitely the most visible international platform to combine these three concepts and to present Turkey as an international brand. We are more than glad to become a part of this cooperation and to enhance this relationship further in the future.” Mr. Zeljko Obradovic, Head Coach, Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul said, “Hello everybody. It’s great have all of you in our house. It’s a good thing to celebrate the past, but I also think that the future is a thing to consider. I came here because they told me that all the games would be full of fans and I am very happy because it does happen in all Euroleague games. As a coach I believe in a very simple thing: you must give opportunities to young people, to young players, to play basketball. To make everything we can for them to become good players but also to make everything in our hands to keep them here. I know that competing against the NBA is very difficult, but this should be something very important for us. So the future is very simple: work hard from our side, and don’t forget that the most important part of this organization are our players. Thank you.” Mr. Theodoros Papaloukas, Euroleague Basketball Legend said, “It’s important to have partners this size that can help you improve, and also the clubs who are trying to increase the level of the game. Basketball is changing every day, improving, getting better, and that’s why we understand the commitment of the fans. You can tell by the numbers, that people are getting the Euroleague a little more, and that’s very important because that’s making something different. The future will be difficult for everybody, but that makes it more interesting. It will be a goal to make more people come closer to this, because it is a really good project. I wish that we go on for many years, because I know that people are working very hard and trying to do their best. They are fighting every day for this. And now, nine days before the Final Four, which is the biggest event in Europe, everybody will be ready and everybody will be there to try to bring the glory back home. I wish everything will go well, and that the Euroleague will have more successful years. Maybe in another 15 years we will talk about the example of the Euroleague.”

Istanbul Modern’s Architectural Exhibition

Istanbul Modern in partnership with The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and MoMA PS1, and co-sponsored by Garanti Bank, Polimeks Holding and VitrA hosts a temporary installation in the museum’s courtyard “ALL THAT IS SOLID”, the second temporary installation of the YAP Istanbul Modern: Young Architects Program. The project “ALL THAT IS SOLID” was designed by PATTU (Cem Kozar, Işıl Ünal), and its engineering and construction support has been provided by Metal Yapı. From June 10 through November 15, 2015, “ALL THAT IS SOLID” will be experienced by museum visitors of all ages and includes events programmed especially for the young public. The selection of the project was undertaken by an international jury presided by Prof. Suha Özkan together with architectural experts and representatives from Istanbul Modern and other YAP International partners. From among the proposals of the five finalists, the jury selected “ALL THAT IS SOLID”, a design that borrows geometries from past buildings that once stood in the area where Istanbul Modern is located in and crunches them together in a chaotic way. Inspired by the industrial history of the area, the project is both a reminder of the past and a proposal for a more critical view of the future. Initiated in 2012 by Istanbul Modern in collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and MoMA PS1, the YAP Istanbul Modern: Young Architects Program is held biannually during the summer and offers young, emerging architects the opportunity to design a

temporary installation in Istanbul Modern’s courtyard. The program began in 1998 in MoMA PS1’s courtyard in New York and became international with the participation of CONSTRUCTO in Santiago, Chile; the National Museum of XXI Century Arts (MAXXI) in Rome, Italy; the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Seoul, South Korea and Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (Istanbul Modern) in Istanbul, Turkey. Architects and designers invited to the YAP: Young Architects Program are encouraged to address environmental issues such as sustainability, re-use, and re-cycling, and to explore innovative architectural design ideas providing elements of shade, water, and seating that would increase the possibilities of use in open-air spaces. Providing a popular urban venue for the summer, these designs are expected to protect visitors from the heat of the city, host diverse events, and create intimate social spaces for city-dwellers, all with a modest budget and through reasonable architectural solutions. An international exhibition curated by YAP Istanbul Modern program coordinators Çelenk Bafra and Pelin Derviş will be on view in Istanbul Modern’s pop-up exhibition area until August 2. The exhibition features models, visuals, and videos of the projects proposed by the finalists invited to the program by the partner institutions in 2014 and 2015.

Ulusoy yaptığı açıklamada, Türkiye’nin kış turizmi yapılan önemli dağlarının olduğunu, bunlar arasında da Erciyes Kayak Merkezi’nin ön plana çıktığını belirtti. Buralarda sadece kış turizmi kısıtlamasına gidilmeden 12 ay boyunca turizm yapılmasını amaçladıklarını vurgulayan Ulusoy, “Kışın kullandığımız kayak merkezlerimizde 12 ay 365 gün turizm yapmalıyız. Özellikle Erciyes biçilmiş kaftan. Bizim için önemli bir merkez. Buraya 4 yıldızlı 5 yıldızlı tesisler yapılıyor. Küresel ısınmanın etkisiyle sıcaklıkların artmasının Erciyes’i cazibe merkezi haline getireceğine dikkati çeken Ulusoy, herkesin yazın sığınacak yere ihtiyacı olduğunu, bu anlamda Erciyes’in uluslararası arenada da Türkiye’yi ön plana çıkaracağını ifade etti. Başaran Ulusoy, bu yıl her türlü olumsuzluklara rağmen sektördeki büyümeyi olumlu bulduklarını dile getiren Ulusoy, şunları kaydetti: ‘’Turizmdeki geçen seneki rakamları yüzde 1,5-2 revize ettik.
