Building Organic Bridges Any Bridge that serves the purpose of preserving nature and environment is a Bridge that should be used for the coming years. The countries that build and use that Bridge shall be the successful, demandable countries to visit by the tourist that has changed their purpose and vision in visiting a country. Safety for them nowadays is nature that has preserved its natural soul and is able to provide food that is not spoilt by chemicals that create so many unwanted sicknesses. Who wants to visit a city/country that is loosing its character by loosing its pastures to buildings and cities that cannot be enjoyed due to dust and ruins to make way for new tall buildings that suffocate the historical venues and life in general. We have a very important upcoming congress in October, IFOAM organised by the BUGDAY Association. Thanks to the efforts and vision of the late Victor Ananias who had planted the seeds for Building Organic Bridges through his works. His dedicated team led by Gunesin Aydemir is carrying this mission very successfully now and to the future. It seems we have caught the Organic Spirit, as we have a Project that is sponsored by the Turkish History Foundation on the story of the cheese at Kars. Zavot Farm led by Ilhan Koculu is setting an example of how to preserve nature and produce organic gruyere and kaser cheese with a story dating back to his ancestors. He has also set up a museum of cheese at Kars. What he is doing is a very good example of Eco-Tourism and with the right approach tourists would love to travel to Kars, see the historical places to visit and the world famous the ANI , wonder at the closeness of Armenia and top of with a visit to the Zavot Farm and Museum. The Festival months are here thanks to IKSV with a full programme for the Theatre Festival in May and the Music Festival in June. Than , it is TIME FOR JAZZ and the 21st Istanbul Jazz Festival is between 1st and 16th July. 28 concerts that will feature over 200 musicians from Turkey and abroad will perform at 13 different venues. Turkey Extends e-visa deadline Travelers visiting Turkey will no longer have to apply for an electronic visa before they travel after authorities agreed to postpone the introduction of the new system until the end of the year. Electronic visas were due to be exclusively in place by April 10 which means the practice of obtaining visas upon arrival to points of entry to Turkey will come to an end. However, Turkish Touristic Hotels & Investors Association (TUROB) informed that the due date is extended until December 31, 2014 so that visitors who need a visa to enter to Turkey can get it at Turkish borders. Travelers can also obtain an e-Visa online on www.evisa.gov. tr. Visitors can simply fill in their details, make payment and download their e-Visas prior to their travels up to 24 hours before travel. Visitors who apply e-Visa will get US$10 discount and can also print their e-Visa either using their own printers or at two airports of Istanbul; Istanbul Atatürk Airport and Sabiha

Turkey as a Wedding Destination for Japanese Tourists A group of hoteliers, investors, tourism schools and wedding organizers visited Turkey and held a meeting with Istanbul Touristic Hotels & Investors Association (TUROB) executive board at Point Hotel Taksim. Japanese and Turkish tourism professionals discuss travel and tourism and how to enhance tourism between the two countries. Japanese delegation stated that there is an increasing demand of wedding organizations abroad that Hawaii has captured the biggest pie in that market. Japanese delegates stated that they are looking for alternatives to Hawaii as wedding and honeymoon destination and Turkey could be a good alternative especially for its cultural values as well as services offered in the country. Japanese delegates said that Japanese people prefer weddings in spring and autumn with participation of 70 to 200 people.

Istanbul is Travelers Top Destination in the World Istanbul ranked number 1 destination at the TripAdvisor 2014 Travellers’ Choice awards for Destinations in the World and in Europe. Travellers’ Choice Destinations honour top travel spots worldwide based on the millions of reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period. These awards honour nearly 500 destinations including the winners for the top spots in the world, and individual lists for Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, China, Middle East, Russia, South America, the South Pacific, the U.K. and the U.S.

Discussion of Tourism and Hospitality in Turkey at CATHIC Turkey’s hospitality industry leaders will gather in Istanbul in June for the Turkey and Neighbours Hotel Investment Conference (CATHIC) to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing Turkey’s burgeoning tourism and hospitality industries. CATHIC, to be held June 9-10 at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel & Conference Center, is supported by the Turkish Tourism Investors Association and represented by Turkish event partner Alkas. It is expected to attract the region’s top hotel investors, operators, developers, advisors, architects and government officials. In a recent interview, Murat Ersoy, president of Atlas Jet and chairman of the Turkish Tourism Investors Association, said 33.5 million tourists visited Turkey in 2013, which generated revenues of $24.5 billion in U.S. dollars during the first nine months. During the last five years there has been double-digit growth in accommodation services, boosting the hotel industry’s profitability and attracting more investors. “International hotel chains, closely following these developments, have started to bring their brands – both in the luxury and midpriced segments – by placing Turkey at the forefront of their expansion strategies,” he said, adding that

there are now 4,067 certified hotels in the country representing 1,059,000 beds. Ersoy will address the future of Turkey’s tourism infrastructure at CATHIC. Dr. Daniel Thorniley, president of DT-Global Business Consulting GmbH, will kick off the conference with an update of the worldwide investment climate. He will be followed by Cenk Sidar, chief executive officer & president of Sidar Global, who will present the regional perspective. They will discuss the fundamental strengths underpinning Turkey’s continued growth and development despite recent political issues. “Turkey remains the number-two key strategic investment market in Europe for western investors,” Thorniley said. “Government policy is pro-growth,” helping to make Turkey “one of the most exciting business opportunities in the world.” Additional confirmed speakers include Mehmet Onkal, managing partner of BDO Hospitality Consulting, who will present a market analysis of Istanbul, the Turkish Riviera and secondary cities; Omer Isvan, president at Servotel Corporation, and Rui Barros, managing director and senior vice president EMEA of Wyndham Hotel Group, who will discuss strategies for growth and development in Turkey; and Şenay Azak-Matt, general manager Turkey for Aareal Bank Group, who will share insights into debt and equity financing. Turkey’s Largest Domestic Terminal Opened in Izmir Airports CEO and President Sani Şener as well as many congressmen, bureaucrats and politicians. Having submitted the best offer at the tender initiated by DHMI on November 17th, 2011, TAV affiliated company TAV Ege won the operating rights of the domestic terminal until 2032 for 610 million Euros + VAT. The foundations of the new terminal were laid on June 15th, 2012. During this transition period, domestic flights were launched at international terminal, which is also operated by TAV. TAV gained the operating rights of international terminal in 2007. Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport provided services to almost 10.2 million passengers in 2013, by an increase of 9 per cent compared to the previous year. 2.5 million of these passengers used international flights and 7.7 of them used domestic flights. Constructed by TAV Construction, the new domestic terminal will have an indoor area of approximately 200,000 square meters. The project involves a 2537 vehicle capacity closed car park and a 3 thousand vehicle capacity open car park. Constructed by TAV Group, one of the world’s leader corporations in the airport projects and operations sector, Adnan Menderes Airport new domestic terminal is inaugurated. Istanbul Offers Free Public Wi-Fi Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has launched free Wi-Fi in popular public squares around the city. The municipality announced that, starting with public squares, services will be broadened to cover wider parts of the city. Users can access the free public internet service in key squares such as Taksim, Sultanahmet, Eminonu, Mecidiyekoy. After getting a password through their mobile phones, users can login to use the public WiFi service, according to the announcement. Istanbul Municipality has also started to roll-out Wi-Fi services on its buses.

Turkish Street Photography at Los Angeles Photo Festival Turkish Street Photography came to Los Angeles at first annual event. The LAPF™ Concept: Turkey exhibition opened at the Downtown LA Art Walk. The festival, selecting Turkey as the theme, presented images from 100 photographers of recent Turkish street photography at the Los Angeles Downtown Hatakeyama Gallery. All photos presented at the exhibit, participated by amateur and professional photograph artists from Turkey, have been selected by a team of critics, namely member of the Associated Press and Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Nick Ut, as well as Robert Ysais, Vern Evans, and Mert Türkoğlu. The documentary film is already screened at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington on December 10, 2013, at the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC and at the American Turkish Association of Washington

DC (ATA-DC). Promoting cultural understanding through photography, the “Concept” project began its first year in Turkey and is the first Turkish Republic Street Photography exhibition in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Photo Festival created by Mert and Elif Türkoğlu said they welcome the great interest people showed in the festival. The duo say they plan to take the exhibit to New York, San Francisco and Chicago after Los Angeles and also to publish an album to comprise of 100 photos presented in the exhibit. Turkish Street Photography, featuring images built on human, nature, city and objects, is expected to be visited by 15 thousand people. LAPF Concept Turkey, the most comprehensive international exhibit to date on behalf of Turkish photography, will meet Turkish art lovers in Istanbul in May.

The 50th Annual Turkey Presidential Cycling Tour starts in Alanya finishes in Istanbul The 50th Annual Turkey Presidential Cycling Tour is offering sport fans an unforgettable fest for 8 straight days. Buoyed up with primary sponsorship by Turkish Airlines, the Turkey Presidential Cycling Tour was kicking off in Alanya on April 27. The tour, which covers a 1,254-kilometer course in 8 stages, is being broadcast live in 76 countries. A total of 168 athletes are competing in the tour in which 21 different teams are taking part. Torku Şekerspor is representing Turkey in the tour, which wraps up with a spectacular finish in Istanbul on May 4.

Turkey Attended London Book Fair After running a highly successful and well-attended Market Focus programme at the London Book Fair last year, Turkey’s literature and publishing industry will be promoted again at this year’s fair held on 8-10 April on stand W305 at Earls Court 2. A drinks reception was held to mark the opening of the London Book Fair 2014 at 12:00 on Tuesday 8th April on the Turkey Stand which is open for all to attend. The Office of the Counsellor for Culture and Information, in co-operation with the National Organising Committee for Book Fairs, together with around 20 professional associations and Non-Governmental Organisations, promoted Turkish literature and Turkey’s publishing industry, while also presenting the TEDA Translation Grant Programme. The stand occupied a space of 117m², showcasing more than 100 publishing houses, and an exhibition of a collection of around 2,000 books. The Istanbul Chamber of Commerce was also exhibited and hosted a number of publishers on their stand in a separate section where literary works was displayed and meetings conducted. This year, the attendance of five literary agencies was supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The participating literary agencies were supporting Turkish

literature and writers’ gained access to the international market by focussing on seeking new international connections for Turkish authors, publishers and translators. “Istanbul Unveiled” - A travel Documentary Film from Şerif Yenen One of Turkey’s most experienced travel guide; Şerif Yenen premieres a documentary film “Istanbul Unveiled”, which he produced and directed. Yenen says, “Visitors do not like to be called “tourists” nor do they want to be treated as tourists. The idea of being a tourist has come to connote being taken to prearranged events and to shops or locations where locals are well-experienced in dealing with foreigners, eliminating the possibility of spontaneity or sincere interaction with people.” Yenen adds, “Approximately 99% of visitors coming to İstanbul

spend an average of two and a half days and see only the highlights: the Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar. We have to do much better than this. The art of creating patterned aqueous paper by sprinkling earth dye and powder paint onto the surface of condensed water is called Ebri or Ebru. The Persian word ebri which means cloud or cloudlike had gone through modified and was borrowed into Turkish as Ebru. The artists performing this art are called “ebrucu” (ebrumaker). Although the origin of the art is unknown, some sources indicate that Ebru art was born in Türkistan and passed on to the Ottomans through Iran. Even though, it started to be known as “Turkish Paper”, was admired and its techniques were applied in the west in 17th century, Turkish Ebrus were always preferred, favoured and welcomed. For the reason that Western ebrus have both paint and style differences, Turkish Ebrus are preferred by collectors. Ebru is an art that requires patience. Preperation of the material requires a special rigour. The dyes and paints used in Ebru are made of coloured rocks, earth and some plants found in nature. They definitely should not be water-soluable and include compounds like magnesium, copper and iron.

In classical ebru, the principal issue is that the paint should not be solved in water, and oils and materials including oil should not be used. The plants which are used in pharmaceutics, textiles, food and cosmetics like gum tragacanth, badderlocks, and orchid roots are used to condense the water. Gall is used to have the paint spread and stick over the paper without sinking to the bottom. Brushes appropriately prepared using rose branches and horse tail are used to sprinkle the paint to the surface. In addition, a tray to be used to contain water, a shelf to dry the painted ebrus, different size iron rods and paper are used in ebru making. Ebru acquires its artistic characteristics when it is made with materials which are prepared in conformity with the traditions. Hundreds of ebrus can be made with the same water contained in ebru tray. Even though same colours and paints are used, each ebru is unique. Since each ebru made cannot be repeated, and carries some features we can associate to the artist who made the ebru, helped ebru to preserve its dynamism and curiousity and art which is desirable to be performed.

Nurten Şişman She was born in Ankara in 1975. She finished primary school, elementary school and high school in Ankara. She graduated from Department of Finance Anadolu Uni. Faculty of Economics in 1999. She worked in the private sector for a short period. She took painting classes for three years and participated in various exhibitions. When she was attending to Ottoman Language classes, she started “Ebru” courses offered by the Ministry of Culture because of her interest in the Traditional Turkish Handicraft. She started taking “Ebru” and “Kat’i” courses from Bahtiyar HIRA as of 2006. Later on, she started offering courses as ebru instructor. In 2011, she was granted icazet (permission) by Bahtiyar HIRA, who she was an assistant to, and opened her first exhibition in the same year in Ankara. As of 2012, she started taking drawing, design and tezhip (illumination) courses from Selçuk University Traditional Handicraft Department faculty member Instructor Arzu Tozlu. She held exhibitions as an artist of Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Ankara, Istanbul and Elazığ in Turkey, and in Thailand, China, Pakistan (IslamabadKarachi), Iraq (Erbil-Duhok), Sultanate of Oman and United Arab Emirates. She continues to exert efforts to transfer the Ebru and Kat’i art to the next generations without degenerating the traditional aspects and promote the arts at home and abroad among masses. hy is it that we talk about the environment as an external condition or source? Why did we as humans give up on following nature’s principles for survival and having a good life, especially in the last century? How did the human-made economy start to dominate the real sense of nature? Why do we have a big society of never satisfied consumers, driving unsustainable production which is growing in the wildest ways? Why are fresh air, clean water, healthy food and a basic home not considered as the foundation of life anymore? The Buğday movement started with the search for answers to these questions. The first initiators of the Buğday movement looked for those answers in real life, in the farmers’ markets as well as the traditions, the culture andwisdom in Turkey. The movement rapidly grew with the abundance of answers gathered. This led the organization to become a democratic, open and active NGO in Turkey, working in many different areas of ecological living. Buğday always works with a holistic approach, taking its power from the country’s richness and diversity. Turkey is a land of immense cultural diversity. Being a melting pot of ethnicities, rooted in many different cultures makes us very colourful. As a result of our culture having so many different sounds, it is not always easy to compose a good symphony. Taking this fact into account, Buğday Association follows the traditions of the ancestors who lived on this land with an open mind. Buğday has been active in lobbying, taking part in policy making to follow up Turkey’s EU accession negotiations closely. Buğday invests in a variety of people, believing that good seeds grow healthy only if they are sown with good intentions. For 20 years the Buğday movement has been building bridges between people and organizations to

“BUILDING ORGANIC BRIDGES” The ORGANIC WORLD WILL GATHER IN ISTANBUL at the18th IFOAM ORGANIC WORLD CONGRESS The IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements) Organic World Congress (OWC) is the world’s largest and most significant organic gathering organized every three years to discuss the strategy and roadmap of organic agriculture. Bugday Association for Supporting Ecological Living will be organizing the 18th OWC in Turkey on 1315 October 2014. The congress is expected to bring together more than 2,500 stakeholders around the theme “Building Organic Bridges”. The 18th IFOAM Organic World Congress (OWC) is a unique opportunity for the organic world to network with organic stakeholders from all over the world and to learn about the most recent technologies, production techniques, and marketing methods. Bugday Association also aims to increase awareness of organic agriculture in Turkey and to guide people, institutions, organizations and companies related to ecological living to cooperate during the preparations of the congress. The next OWC is structured in three tracks with 64 sessions: Main Track, Scientific Track, and Practitioners’

Track. In addition, a series of workshops highlight the contributions made by various initiatives from around the organic world. World-renowned keynote speakers including Will Allen, Anna Lappé and Pat Mooney will give inspiring talks during the congress. There will also be side events to enrich the congress experience for all including visits to organic markets and neighboring farms, organic and cultural tours in and out of Istanbul and gourmet activities. National and international preconferences related to the organic sector from different perspectives will be organized by various institutions the weekend before the congress, as well as a national forum that brings together NGOs working in agriculture, ecology, food, biodiversity, nature protection, and climate change. Congress Tracks The Main Track, made up of two parallel sessions titled Organic Vision Building and Growing the Organic World, seeks panelists discuss the future direction of the global organic world. The discussion focuses on building bridges between rich and poor areas of the world, between scientific knowledge and practice, and between new and old technology. 150 Years Journey Of Cheese Making in Kars The History of Kars Gravyer and Kaşar Among the German and Swiss entrepreneurs who settled in Tsarist Russia from 19th century onwards there were Swiss cheese makers and dairy farmers as well. Cheese makers first settled in Southern Caucasia comprising the modern Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. They set up dairies in Borçalı region in the south of Tbilisi and some other places due to convenient climate and topography for cheese production. After the Ottoman-Russian war known as “93 War “, some villages of Kars and Ardahan, came under the Russian rule, and they were added to these cheese production centers. The production in dairies and the trade along with it let a learning process to begin. Over time new

cheese masters of Molokan, Armenian, Georgian, Greek and Karapapakh origin emerged and learned to produce Swiss cheese using Caucasian milk. After the October Revolution along with Russian withdrawal from Kars, Karapapakhs who came from Borçalı, Tbilisi, settled in the abandoned dairy farms and continued to produce cheese in the way they learned from their Swiss masters. Though the production levels decreased substantially after the war, Kars Gravyer still continued to be made of milk from indigenous cattle breeds fed on rich flora of high-altitude plateaus such as Dikme, Boğatepe, Alagöz, Cicor, Nebiyurdu, İsaçayırı, Borluk, Yaycı. After the foundation of the Republic, cheese makers and entrepreneurs from Thrace settled in present-day village of Kümbetli (Vladikars) and started to produce Kars Kaşar. Having a simpler

Eco-Cultural Tourism salamura (low fat lamb head brined cheese), yağlı tel peynir/dil peyniri (fatty string cheese), yağlı motal (fatty leather skinbag) are only specially produced. Unfortunately, the production of many local cheese varieties such as Türkmen saçak/ip peynir, sandık (chest), karın katık (belly cheese), kurut (dried), ortulum (in lambs tripe) and Molokan wine cheese have been decreased sharply. Today, only the oldest living members of cheese making cultures, namely the grandmothers, sustain the production. These cheese varieties are precious parts of cultural diversity but they are about to become extinct.

Ecological Cycles and Cheese Making in Kars Besides the geographical features like flora, aquatic sources, convenient pastures native cattle breeds are a significant determinative factor of the quality of Kars cheese making. After the snow cover melts at the end of winter, nature starts to revitalize from the end of April onwards. And so the period of cattle feeding themselves from the nature begins. Production of Gravyer and Kaşar cheese occurs in May, June and July when milk is abundant. Cheese making in Kars, which is based on indigenous cattle breeds such as East Anatolian Red and Zavot – that are feeding from 1500 different flowering plants in pastures – instead of the highyield animal breeds and seeds, sets a model for a sustainable traditional animal husbandry harmonious with ecological cycle. Industrial livestock farming techniques, which is degrading the nutritional value of food sources and putting pressure on biological diversity and animal germplasm, is threatening taste and flavor diversity of local cheese production in Kars. It causes Küçük Boğatepe Köyü, Kars, 2013 many cheese varieties either to become extinct or to loose quality.

About the Ecomuseum Zavot Ecomuseum Zavot aims to keep local cheese making culture alive as a whole and strives for cheese making knowledge to be compiled and used by villagers to revive cheese production in order to create economic return. Ecomuseum Zavot, situated in the village Boğatepe, which was once called Zavot due the number of dairies established in the village, was founded in 2011 by the Environment and Life Association of Boğatepe in cooperation with Büyük (Big) and Küçük (Small) Boğatepe village heads by the support of United Nation Millennium Development Goals Fund (MDGF). The building of Ecomuseum Zavot is an old gruyere dairy built by Russians in the last quarter of 19th century, used by Molokans and Swiss cheese makers until 1918 and finally operated by the Cooperative in Büyük Zavot from the beginning of Republican era until 1976. Meet at Festival

Time for Jazz st 21 Istanbul Jazz Festival rganised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), with Garanti Bank as its sponsor for the last 17 years, the 21st Istanbul Jazz Festival will be held between 1-16 July this year. Once again, Istanbul will host many stars, including the most distinguished figures of jazz as well as of popular music, at the 13 entrancing venues of the city. The 21st Istanbul Jazz Festival will once again liven up the city with the legends of jazz in the 28 concerts that will feature over 200 musicians from Turkey and abroad, at 13 different venues. The full programme of the 21st Istanbul Jazz Festival was launched at a press meeting at Bej Karaköy on Tuesday, 29 April, where Görgün Taner, General Director of İKSV, and Elif Güvenen, Corporate Brand Management & Marketing Communications Senior Vice President at Garanti Bank, gave the opening speeches. Güvenen said, “I would like to express here again how much we value our 17-year camaraderie with the İKSV. We support the Istanbul Jazz Festival through the Garanti Jazz Green and are extremely happy to do so, as the festival enriches both our society and the individuals. We wish that jazz music will gradually find a much wider audience.” Pelin Opcin, Director of the Istanbul Jazz Festival, then took the

floor to brief the participants on the festival concerts. The press meeting, which hosted some of the eminent figures of the jazz stage as well, was followed by a party with famous journalists and artists such as Muhsin Akgün, Elif Çağlar, Çağlayan Çevik, Kaan Sezyum, and Emel Kurhan as guest DJ’s. The poster of the 21st Istanbul Caz Festival was designed by Gülsün Karamustafa and Bülent Erkmen in cooperation. Details from Gülsün Karamustafa’s “A Promised Exhibition” were made into the festival poster by İKSV’s Corporate Identity Advisor Bülent Erkmen. About the poster, Gülsün Karamustafa said, “When I accepted the offer regarding the Istanbul Jazz Festival poster, I knew my work would now be a subject in the designer’s creative field. After that point, the result would come out of the adventure that unfolds between the designer and the spectator. My worked fulfilled a role in the designer’s work.” In explaining his work, Bülent Erkmen said, “Taking elliptical frames from the details of the ‘pointing hand’ in Gülsün Karamustafa’s A Promised Exhibition, I piled them up to point to the logo of the Istanbul Jazz Festival and to its title in Karamustafa’s handwriting. The hands became the indicator and the logo and title the indicated.”

The Istanbul Jazz Festival offers new discoveries to the audiences not only in its colourful programme, but also at its interesting venues. This CD featuring a selection of works by this year’s guest artists will present an ideal opportunity to get to know the artists in advance, as well as remembering the festival afterwards. The 21st Istanbul Jazz Festival will kick off with an opening ceremony followed by the Four in the Pocket concert on July 1st, at 21:30 at the Consulate General of Austria / Austria Culture Office Garden. Four in the Pocket, founded in 2007, features Elif Çağlar on the vocals, Çağrı Sertel on keyboard, Alp Ersönmez on the bass, Mert Önal on the drums, and Toygun Sözen on the saxophone. The band will perform a special repertoire comprising the works of various artists from the previous festivals. A limited number of tickets will be on sale for the opening concert.

14 Architecture Biennale That the most important architectural exhibition takes place in Venice can be no accident. Venice supplies a stage that no other city could for such event. Its architecture, modest and grandiose, combines with the lagoon to create something beyond nature itself...” wrote the architecte David Chipperfield, artistic director of last Biennale in July 2012. Directed by Rem Koolhaas, this year the Architecture Biennale (www.labiennale.org/it/architettura) will open to public for 6 months, from June 7th to November 23rd 2014. Three interlocking exhibitions will be encompassed under the headline “Fundamentals”: - Absorbing modernity 1914 – 2014, - Elements of Architecture, - Monditalia, and 21 collateral events will frame the event all over the Laguna. Venice is an unlike museum, an open air pathway through

alleys, fields, bridges and a unique theatre stage of amazing architectures, unexpected views, colorful habits and traditions: the perfect setting for a matchless worldwide event! Turkey Successfully Represented at GIBTM 2014

Gulf Incentive, Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition (GIBTM) 2014 welcomed over 250 regional and international Hosted Buyers from 36 countries who met with 300 exhibitors from 35 destinations from around the world. Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau (ICVB) attended the eight edition of the GIBTM which was held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from 24 to 26 March 2014. Turkish Culture and Tourism Attaché Mustafa Özdemir represented Turkey throughout the exhibition. A total of thirteen Turkish companies attended the exhibition at 63-sqm Turkey stand, which is organized by the Turkish Culture & Tourism Office in Dubai and ICVB. Turkey stand exhibitors attended GIBTM Networking Reception on March 25. The show, which attracted senior level international meeting planners, corporate or incentive travel buyers, event organisers and those involved in the decision making process for meetings, events, conferences or incentive travel, showed great attention to Turkey. ICVB had chance to communicate with over 80 hosted buyers due to the great interest to Istanbul. ICVB made business contacts with hosted buyers especially from Europe, Far East, and North America and attended business meetings with local agencies. ICVB represented by Sales & Marketing Coordinator Nihan Esen, Convention Research Executive Tuğçe Memişoğlu. On March 23, Ms. Esen and Ms. Memişoğlu attended ICCA Member Reception. GIBTM released the inaugural Middle East Buyers Report which surveyed planners from 10 countries in the Middle East, to gain direct insight into their purchasing habits and the decisionmaking process. When regional buyers were asked which features were most important when choosing a venue, price came in fourth place (48%) behind ease of access (61%), Safety and security (52%) and professionalism of staff (52%). It was a similar response when meeting planners were asked about the least helpful type of behaviour of venue staff. Inflexibility in price negotiation came in fourth position (55%) behind venue changes not communicated (61%), slow staff response (58%) and staff turnover (58%). Other highlights of the study were that the UAE is the leading destination 66% of meeting planners reporting having held meetings there in the last two years. Outside of the region, approximately 70% of planners also said that they had selected European destinations for their events with France, Spain, Austria, Italy and Turkey, respectively, the most popular countries.

IMEX Announces New Education Programme Organisers of the annual IMEX in Frankfurt trade show announced their final, extensive professional education programme for the 2014 Messe Frankfurt show. The 150-plus free educational sessions have been planned to appeal to industry buyers, as well as suppliers and will be delivered across eight industry-specific tracks including a new Business Skills track. Sessions will be led by industry experts and internationallyrenowned speakers, with the majority qualifying for CMP points. New educational venues on the show floor include a new Tech Hub, sponsored by Double Dutch, the Meeting Design Hub, delivered by the Meeting Support Institute and a Creativity Pod. These new areas complement the existing IMEX-CIC Inspiration Centre, sponsored by Business Events Sydney, the Research Pod and Sustainability Hub, powered by GMIC. Among the speakers will be Debra Zabloudil of The Learning Studio whose “Creating And Delivering Oral Presentations That Pack A Punch” will cover the timeless challenge of how to make a business

presentation with confidence and authority. Zabloudil will also share her leadership skills in another session entitled “Everything I Need to Know About Leadership I Learned From Rock ‘n’ Roll.” The education programme is the most extensive yet to be produced by IMEX and its partners and has been designed to complement the show’s core focus on face-to-face business appointments combined with multiple networking events. Eight special education tracks have been crafted to enhance either personal or business performance while advancing industry knowledge and standards. They include ‘Business Skills’, ‘Risk Management & Compliance’, ‘Trends & Research’, ‘Creative Learning’ and ‘Sustainability’. IMEX has also taken current trends for shorter, more varied learning formats into account. This year’s programme combines 45-minute seminars, 30-minute small group campfires plus new approaches such as moderated Hot Topic Tables and Meet The Expert Clinics. The new clinics allow visitors to book free one-to-one consultations with speakers, giving them the chance to acquire more in-depth knowledge or benefit from guidance on a specific business issue.

AIBTM Career Education The Americas Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition (AIBTM) has teamed with RecertTrack to support meeting professionals in continuing their career education and will showcase the first-ever “Official Education Tracking Service” during AIBTM 2014 in June. As a Web-based platform, RecertTrack is able to track, update and hold education information, as well as remind users when recertification is due, effectively providing Certified Meeting Planners (CMPs), Certified Exhibition Managers (CEMs) and Certified Association Sales Executives (CASEs) and the like with a framework for managing their professional development. “AIBTM is the first entity in the meeting industry to partner

with RecertTrack and offer online document management and automated recertification tracking solution to meeting professionals,” said Cedric Calhoun, founder and chief executive of RecertTrack. “As a premier MICE organization, AIBTM understands that continuing education and certification is part of a greater need for better structure in career development.” Calhoun will head the “To Certify or Not to Certify” education session that will focus on the importance of continuing education and the career path structure that is provided by certification programs. It will also highlight recent research studies on the MICE industry and how it impacts the future progression of the individual meeting planner and overall industry. This session will take place June 10 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. as part of the AIBTM professional education program.

IBTM India Chennai 3-5 September 2014 The organisers of the Reed Travel Exhibitions’ IBTM Global Events portfolio (www.ibtmevents.com) have confirmed that they will be holding the 2014 edition of IBTM India (www.ibtmevents.com/ ibtmindia) at the ITC Grand Chola, Chennai from 3-5 September 2014. Interview with Mike Lyons, AIBTM Exhibition Director Q: AIBTM is now a fixture in the global meetings industry calendar, although it’s location is new for 2014. What prompted the move from Illinois? A: We announced the intention to rotate between Chicago Illinois and Orlando, Florida in June last year. The move offered all stakeholders access to new business opportunities in two key gateway cities that are themselves major hubs of the meeting industry. Whilst Chicago is considered one of the country’s leading meetings destinations, equally Orlando was recently voted as one of the top three cities for meetings and events in the US. Both the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), which is to host AIBTM, was nominated last year as a top convention center by Business Review USA. So we feel that rotating between both of these cities together with the great support from both of the CVB’s is a successful formula. Q: What is the attraction of Orlando and do you anticipate more organisers, booking agents and Hosted Buyers attending this year in comparison to last year? A: First of all our venue for AIBTM, the OCCC, is the second largest convention facility in America, and each year attracts more than 200 events. Some 116,000 hotel rooms are available in Orlando, home to countless entertainment attractions for visitors, and of course a first class international airport that even offers Remote Airline Check-in (RAC) services at the OCCC. So, it has all the components of a great meetings destination, and we are delighted to provide Orlando with the opportunity to showcase their offerings to attendees from all over the world. Orlando also benefits from efficient transportation links, facilitating both regional and international connections for AIBTM attendees. With Orlando International Airport (MCO) (www.orlandoairports. net) approving plans to almost double its passenger capacity to 45 million travellers per year, and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) (www. orlandosanfordairport.com) announcing a record breaking year, processing over two million passengers through its gates in 2013 (+12% from 2012), the city provides the perfect platform to host major international visitors. A: Our primary objective when it comes to all aspects of organising the show, is supporting all attendees improve and achieve their business objectives. In order to achieve this, we strive to deliver a more intimate and relaxed experience that allows for ‘real’ business to be done on the show floor. By being in Orlando this year, there is a lot that’s new for everyone. Firstly, we are set to roll out our newly branded education programme – AIBTM Knowledge. Knowledge is one of our core brand values and according to our research it is one of the key reasons for attendance at AIBTM. Once again, PCMA, MPI, ICCA, IAEE, IMMPA, CIS and Site will be integral to some 30+ free accredited sessions. We are also this year partnering with RecertTrack who are the world’s first online certification

More details on each of these features will follow in the coming months. Q: Was the content for this year influenced by feedback from 2013? A: The Knowledge programme is always influenced by industry feedback, through not only our own research onsite and post event, but also through the team that puts it all together. By working with our industry association partners and attending events around the world and of course in the USA, we can see what are the hot topics, burning issues and future trends. Q: How will the education tracks and sessions take shape this year? Who are you partnering with for delivery of this element? A: We are partnering with the key industry associations once again. Day one


is dedicated to education offering many interactive experiences; these sessions are intended to encourage and inform meeting professionals about trends, best practices and issues that focus on giving them tools and techniques to generate greater ROI from the meetings they plan. The opening educational sessions, “Strategic Meetings Management – Beyond the Basics”, is an interactive workshop led by Betsy Bondurant, President of Bondurant Consulting, who will briefly review the key components of a Strategic Meetings Management Programme. The interactive portion will identify specific actions that can be initiated in order to determine things such as, current meeting volume, who is planning meetings, tips for programme adoption, ideas for controlling meeting and event spend. At the same time, Jim Spellos of Meeting U., will give an hourlong presentation entitled “Apptastic! 60 Apps in 60 Minutes.” Switching the focus of the show, AIBTM will also run a dedicated education stream examining the relationship between catering menus and participants’ health and safety. Tracy Stuckrath President and Chief Connecting Officer at of Thrive! Meetings and Events, will lead “Serve This, Not That!”, which will educate attendees on making smart choices while creating catering menus. Concurrently, “What Your Event Planner CV Needs in 2014”, features etouches’ Steve MacKenzie providing a complete checklist of the up-to-the-minute digital trends that every event planner needs in order to market efficiently. Following the morning sessions, the interactive “Future of Meetings: Talking ‘Bout Our Generations” session will give participants feedback about developing meetings with crossgenerational appeal. In “Innovation: Stop Talking About It and Start Doing It…”, consultants Carmen Effron and Andrea Simon walk participants through the Innovation Games exercise to transform ideas into innovation. Q: What is the likely exhibitor and visitor make up in terms of percentages expected from North America and from overseas? A: Early Data, Meetings Growth Point to Hosted Buyer Increase for AIBTM 2014. Nearly 18,000 appointments between buyers and suppliers are expected to take place at AIBTM 2014—a rise of 20% from last year. We are anticipating that 15% of AIBTM’s Hosed Buyer population will be International. The top three Hosted Buyer segments include corporate planners, association planners and incentive houses.
