Generations is a good expansion pack for story tellers because it is centred around family. It offers cool new interactions like giving flower bouquet to your simmie sweetheart, elders sharing the photos of their grandchildren/family with other simmies, playing pranks on your friends and families, arranging bachelor / bachelorette parties or wedding parties and things like ‘woohooing in the tree house’ makes the new expansion pack fun to play. Also with the new chemistry table the simmies can not only improve their logic skills but can also create fun potions which has got hilarious effects! The new option to open a baby care centre is an interesting career options for simmies who loves kids. From a builders point of view it has got a whole lot of cool new objects to build and decorate your sims’ house. Finally the

players got the spiral staircases, bunk beds, baby strollers, wedding arches and tree houses that they always wanted. On the negative side, for some of us the Generations pack is causing freezing issues in Sunset Valley which is very unfortunate. Also, the new memory sharing function is rather annoying. Personally I think that the pop-up message for sharing the memories with social internet sites like facebook and twitter is a bit too much. Only the special memories like engagement, wedding, getting a new job or the birth of a baby etc. should be shared. The other inconsequent everyday memories is not worth sharing. Other than that I am satisfied with Generations expansion pack. It has got hours and hours of game contents to keep the players occupied. Thank you Yanti!

With the release of The Sims 3 players have gained the ability to create individual styles for many of the items used by a sim in day to day life. This has created a haven for those who once wore the shackles of cc lag. It has created a new type of Sims player and with the addition of a pattern maker by EA, these people have even more available to them to create and share the perfect home, decor and lifestyle for players throughout the expansive community. The question though is whether the program is easy to use......... Pattern making can be a daunting task for those who are inexperienced. Even for those who understand how photo editing programs work it can still be a challenge to wrap the mind around a program like Create a Pattern, also known as CAP. In order to understand how to use the program, one must know how the program works. In this article I will cover the basics of CAP and how to do a simple two palette pattern using imported images and my experience to make this an enjoyable process, not frustrating and anger inducing. Create A Pattern is another program along the lines of CAW, but much more polished, which allows players to create their own patterns to use in game. It allows for 4 colourable palettes, one non-colourable background colour and a specular layer which is basically fancy talk for creating a shiny, reflective surface. Unlike TSRW, this allows you to use ‘stickers’ that are already coloured. This does reduce the recolouring ability but great for patterns that are not designed to be recoloured. TSRW also does not have the ability to add the shine layer, or at least it didn’t prior to the release of CAP. To the left is the CAP interface and to this user, it is well set out although I do have a few pet peeves but that’s mainly the issue of not being able to maximise the window. That will not impede on the pattern making process. As you can see there is 4 areas, from left to right we have the layers panel, pattern grid, colour panel and finally the main panel where you source stickers and imported images as well as test the pattern and export it once finished.

Let’s have a look at each area. Layer Panel: this is the main area where you place each layer of your pattern. From the bottom to the top we have the background, layer 1, 2, 3 and 4 then the specular layer. My advice is to ignore the background and specular layer until you gain some more experience. The background layer is mostly useless but in more detailed patterns and damask style wallpapers, the shine effect can be beneficial in creating a detail that will give it a welcome difference. You have the ability to erase layers and switch the mode of colouring (from sticker to stencil mode). This is a great button (the one faded bottom right) and is used to create solid colour layers and to make the stamps standard to the program to be recoloured as solid shapes. To highlight a layer simply click it with your mouse. As seen the specular layer is currently selected. Pattern Grid: this as mentioned is the working area. It currently has a grid shown on it that can be turned off. This area is 256x256 pixels and it is very important to know this. When importing pictures make sure that are not smaller then this if they are to be the same size are you will lose detail. Scale a large picture down, blurring will also occur. Try and keep pictures a similar size. Note that you can zoom in and out which helps you visualise the pattern. The amazing function of this program is the ability to reflect an image to visualise the seamlessness of your pattern. This makes it very powerful as it can be quite tricky to do the same thing in GIMP and Photoshop. Colour Panel: This is where you choose the colour you want. You can choose from pre-selected colours found in a grid by clicking the bottom left button, from the colour wheel pictured, or from a hex code using the bottom right button. The “Show Colour tick box basically turns the colour wheel off. Not really useful but it is there. The most important button is the invert tick box. This will become active when stencil mode is turned on, that is the button on the layer panel at the bottom right. The invert tick box will determine if you are colouring the sticker or the area around the sticker. This is also used in order to get a colourable background. I will show you this later on in the article as we progress with the basics. Opacity affects the transparency of a sticker or imported image. For this to work, make sure the sticker is selected by clicking on it and more the slider around. The closer to 0, the more transparent the image will become.

Main Panel: this is the most important area. From here you can do many things. Like the Sims 2 HUD, the bottom left button accesses the menu where you can quit, export, save and open projects. The pencil button is the main working window where you create your pattern. The video button diagonally opposite allows you to view your pattern in a pre-constructed room to see how it looks. You generally go back and forth fixing your pattern so to get back press the pencil button to return to editing your pattern. The next module has six buttons. The hand button allows you to move images around on the working grid, with the sledgehammer allowing you to delete items. You can also select items with the hand tool and remove by pressing the delete button on your keyboard. The middle buttons are just as important. The left allows you to turn off the grid which is handy to visualise your pattern without entering the cameraman mode. The right button allows you to import new images. The largest module is the place where all the images are housed. You can filter out custom images and delete them as well using the buttons on the far right. This box pops up when selecting the image you will be using for the pattern. Saturation really just refers to the colour and is rather pointless for most cases of pattern making. The dropdown menu allows you to change the location of the image to a different category. Again not important but it is great for organising your images. Now we have the basics covered lets tackle the most important, and surprisingly the topic not covered in the CAP help pages, creating a colourable layer. This is where you have the colourable background. Early on it was thought that a square was needed to colour but this is not true. Let me show you how to create a colourable background for your pattern. Step 1: selecting the layer Select layer one which is the second from the bottom. This is the logical location for it and it must be here otherwise it will affect the recolouring in game. This is the base palette so make sure it’s located here, not anywhere else.

Step 2: Changing colouring mode Now once you have selected the layer we need to toggle between sticker and stencil mode. This as mentioned previously changes the mode of colouring. When the layer is selected, you will see that the square has changed from a grid of different colours signifying sticker mode to a solid blue colour. This signifies that the layer is in stencil mode, also known as fill mode.

Step 3: creating the colourable background Now after completing step 1 and 2 go over to the colour panel. You should now be able to tick the invert box. It is default blue and your pattern grid will become blue signifying that it is now recolourable.

Change to the desired colour now that this has been completed. You can apply the default stickers. Now this is just the basics and an overview of the program. Applying stickers is straight forward and I have chosen not to cover that here. When you do add stickers, make sure to select a new layer so it becomes a different palette in game. In the next article I will cover making a new sticker to use in CAP using GIMP. So stay tuned and keep an eye out for the next issue of TSSI.

Bathrooms

There are a lot of tricks you can use in the bathroom to jazz things up a bit, and make it feel more homely. Combining cupboards with sinks, or setting the bath into a tiled surround, and the use of pillars help put things on a grand scale. In this issue, I will show you some ideas I have used in my bathrooms to achieve a more realistic or classy feel to the room. One of my favourite things in the bathroom is the bathtub. Here I have used the Nearly Perfect Pedestal, (found in the misc items) to create a shelf behind the bath, and with some careful recolouring in CAS, I have transformed an ordinary bathroom into a luxurious place to unwind.

Here is what you will need. I just put up some walls with a 1x2 recess for the bath and a 1x1 recess for the shower.

Open the cheat window by pressing Ctrl + Shift + c together. Then type moveobjects on and hit enter. This will allow you to merge objects together.

Grab the pedestal, and holding Alt move the block into the corner making sure to leave no gaps, and that the block is facing you (otherwise the objects you place on the shelf will face the wrong way). Take the second pedestal and carefully align it with the first, and finally add a third pedestal making sure it fits snugly with no gaps. Next take the Bathe Today bath, and holding alt align it with your new shelf, also making sure it looks flush with the shower wall on the right.

Now it’s time to CAS the shelf and the bathtub to match, I chose a warm marble look and carried it through to the shower for a more cohesive look. Next add your shower, making sure the door faces front, and then you are ready to jazz it up with some dÊcor objects. I do find the pedestals can be a bit large, so you can always place them deeper into the wall. If you do this, you will have to hide the pedestal on the other side of the wall with some furniture or something, and you will not be able to place objects on your shelf. Here is an example.

Another nice way to jazz up the bath is to add pillars and curtains. This time I went with a French theme with luxury fabric in the curtains, crisp white and pale blues. With the use of MOO, this look is super easy to put together. I have used a room width of 6 squares, with a single wall placed two squares in on either side. If you haven't already, open up the cheat window and type in moveobjects on, and hit enter.

Now you can add your pillars at each end of the single wall sections like so.

Now add your bath and curtains. Install a shower and some cabinets with sinks. Then for the finishing dĂŠcor items.

You can also use the pillars for a recessed sink area, like this. To get the flowers to sit in the centre, I used a display stand and CAS’d it the same as the counter so it is hidden.

When you are done, open up the cheat window again, and type moveobjects off. Always remember to check that everything works when you are playing around with MOO. Nobody likes a stomping Sim.

Tutorials:TS3 Sims 3 Apartments http://www.simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Tutorials:TS3_Sims_3_Apartments With some of the new stuff in Generations – spiral stairs – there has been a lot of chat about building loft apartments. Essentially an apartment is part of a house so how do you do that? Yippee a tutorial!

Introduction Creating an apartment is just like creating a home, but with a few extra steps! In a nutshell, you are going to build your lot, furnish only one apartment/living area, then leave the rest empty and mark as either public or hidden. If you want NPCs to live on the lot with you, you will need to assign doors to NPC's after moving a Sim in. You don't pay rent because your Sims technically purchase the building and then pay bills as they normally would, so leaving out unnecessary things before hand will dramatically lower the original price to buy.

Building

Building

Enclose NPC doors The first step in creating nice apartments is the basic construction of a house on any residential lot. You can start with a floorplan from any house plan site or you can use your imagination. Google can provide either house plans for you to use or just the images for inspiration. While you can edit the building structure after the lot has Sims on it, it's easiest to fully design and build your lot now while you don't have to use any cheats. Design your layout and build your house/apartment building. Be sure to keep in mind any areas that you will want as public areas, hidden rooms for NPC's and the areas that you want as private

apartment areas. You will need to have any areas containing apartment doors enclosed with either walls or fences(with gates). The fences must be a type that Sims cannot walk over and you need to place a gate. Remember to place a Public Room Marker inside the fenced area. Some tutorials to help get you started: • Building Great Houses from the Ground up • Necessitorial - Overcoming Auto-roof by Qbuilderz • Landscaping IMPORTANT: In order to assign doors to NPC's later you will need to enclose all public areas with doors that you intend to designate as NPC doors with walls or fences and place a Public Room Marker inside. The enclosure must be on the same level as the door. IE: If you build your apartments on a foundation then the fence/gate must be on the foundation level. An alternative to enclosing doors with fences

Alternate to Enclosing To be able to assign doors for NPCs you can also create a fake vestibule. Create a small room inside the door that is fully enclosed. Place a Public Room Marker inside the small room and outside the door.

Furnishing

Decorate & Furnish

When furnishing the apartment you want to be sure to include all the basics a Sim needs to live. The only cost to the Sim is what is in areas you don't mark as hidden or public. You can create community areas that have things such as exercise rooms, pool areas, reading areas or garages. So a great way to keep the apartment costs minimal while having skill and fun activity objects on the lot is to create community areas that you will later mark as public. Be sure not use cheats such as moveojects on while building so you don't create routing issues and place objects that become unusable.

Marking rooms Public/Private/Hidden

Hidden Room Marker

Public Room Marker After you have designed and built your new apartment you need to mark off the designated areas for hidden rooms, levels skipped and public areas. You do this with 3 different spheres that are located in Buy/Debug. • Press CTRL+SHIFT+C to bring up the console, then type in the following cheat: testingCheatsEnabled true • Press CTRL+SHIFT+C to bring up the console, then type in the following cheat: BuyDebug on Go to Buy Mode, Sort by Function, Debug(?), Misc. Objects. Here you need to look for three silver balls, if you hover over them a description will pop up. There are three that are important when building apartments: Hidden Room Marker, Public Room Marker and Level Skip Marker. • Hidden Room Marker: This marks rooms for use by NPC's and are unavailable for you Sim to enter. Use this to designate the apartments you want your NPC's to live in or just to hide other areas in your apartment. When using this marker that area of your apartment will

be black during live play. • Public Room Marker: This marks all areas that your Sim can use as well as NPC's. You need to mark any community areas such as pools, garages, lobby's, hallways, excercise rooms, etc, that you want your Sim as well as NPC's to be able to visit and interact. • Level Skip Marker: This is used for multi-level buildings where you don't want to watch your Sim walk through. Such as a 4-story apartment building where the apartment is located on the 4th floor. You can place this sphere on the levels you don't want your Sim to walk through.

Note: The Level Skip Marker is optional and will not affect the playability of your apartment or the spawning of NPC's. It will simply make it quicker to get from floor one to floor twelve if your apartment is on the twelfth floor. ;)

Wall Mailbox and Callbox • The callbox can be found in Buy Mode, Sort by Function, Electronics, Miscellaneous Electronics. This is used to "call" other residents in your apartment. You will want to place this in one of the areas you have marked as public with the Public Room Marker. • The wall mailbox is a hidden object and if you want to make your apartment use this then you will need to get an object mod that makes it buyable. Please see the list for Buyable Objects in the Content Lists. Once placed the standard mailbox is automatically deleted as you can have only a single mailbox on a lot. You will want to place this in one of the areas you have marked as public with the Public Room Marker. • The Trash Chute is another hidden object and is available in the same download as the buyable wall mailbox. Sims will use the standard garbage bin unless you place this on the lot. This object is not required but only adds to the atmosphere of high rise apartment buildings and your Sim won't have to walk all the way to the curb for the standard garbage bin.

Note: Assigning doors to NPC's works without the wall mailbox and with the standard mailbox. The callbox also doesn't seem to be necessary to socialize with neighbor NPC's. The option to Ring Bell is on doors assigned to NPC's without it being on the lot. However you will need it if your Sim invites visitors over so you will be informed of their arrival by a notification asking you to buzz them in. If you click Buzz In then they will come up to your floor and let themselves in.

Moving In

Assigning doors to NPC's is done after your Sim has moved in or using the debug cheat. • After you finish building your lot, make sure testingCheatsEnabled true is on, then CTRL+SHIFT+Click on any doors you want assigned to NPC's and select Make NPC Door • If your lot has a family on it go into Buy Mode, CTRL+SHIFT+Click on any doors you want assigned to NPC's and select Make NPC Door. Afterwards you can go into Live Mode and once NPC's start moving onto the lot you will be able to Left+Click any NPC doors and Ring Bell or use a call box if you have placed it on the lot.

Note: If you don't get the option to Make NPC Door then you have forgotten to make sure all doors are enclosed. Make sure all NPC doors are enclosed with walls or a fence that Sims cannot walk over (with a gate), and that you have placed a Public Room Marker inside the fenced area.

Tips • To edit your lot in build mode after moving a Sim in: Press CTRL+SHIFT+C to bring up the console, then type in the following cheat RestrictBuildBuyInBuildings off • The standard garbage bin cannot be deleted. Well it can be deleted in Live Mode but will respawn each time you start your game and enter the lot. The best option is to use this in your design and move it someplace inconspicuous so that the location will be saved. • When making taller buildings make sure that all hallways, stairs, and elevators are publicly marked.

Creating A Multiple Image Covershot By Cera13

Before we get started, it’s important that you take lots of pictures of your lot! Get the exterior from many angles; make sure to leave plenty of room for cropping as well. Additional shots will be cropped, so don’t worry about zooming in or out to get the right size. I’ve found it’s much easier to crop when there is a larger crop-able area. I’ll be using Photoshop for this tutorial. If you don’t have Photoshop, any program that allows you to crop, resize, and layer will work just fine. If you need a photo editing program, GIMP is available online for free. This tutorial might seem long and little complicated, but really it’s just a matter of repeating a few simple steps. After taking your screenshots, review them, figure out which ones are your favorite. Pick out a good exterior shot and 2 additional shots. Open all 3 screenshots in your photo editing program. Also open a new blank document, size this to be 512 x 512 pixels. This is the base for your cover shot. Take your main picture (I tend to use the main shot of the lot for this shot) and crop the excess off of the top and bottom. It is important to take off the excess as we will use that “space” later.

The Photoshop crop tool is highlighted.

And crop to something similar to this.

Start with this Next resize the image so it is 512 pixels wide. From the tool bar, choose Image, then Image Size. Resizing will make sure it fits correctly on our blank background.

Make sure your Constrain Proportions box is checked!! If not, your image will be very distorted!

We can now move onto our additional screenshots. These you want to crop to the same shape. I find that cropping them to a perfect square works the best.

When the crop tool is selected you choose the size you want to crop. You can drag the corners before you crop to make the image larger or smaller depending on what you want shown.

Start with this

And crop to something similar to this.

Resize your cropped image to 256 x 256 pixels. Save all of your images. You can replace the originals or save them as a copy. It doesn’t matter, just personal choice. Now go over to the blank document that you started earlier. This is going to be the base of your cover shot. If you want a colorful background to your lettering, now is the time to do it! Choose the color fill tool. Typically it’s a little bucket, but I can’t find mine, so I can’t show you. *giggles* Go ahead and color the background whatever you heart desires. I tend to choose colors that I’ve used in

my lot during the decorating process. Now It’s just a matter of selecting and copying the cropped images and pasting them on your background. Using the toolbar, choose Select then All (This will select the entire image); next choose Edit then Copy. Go to the background image. Choose Edit then Paste. Repeat the process with each of the pictures. You should now have 4 layers on your background.

Photoshop layers box. The checks you see with the images are transparent.

Photoshop move tool and test tools are highlighted

Use the move tool and place your main image at the top and additional images below. You may have to click on the layer in the layer tab. You will want to make sure you have enough room in the center for lettering. If you don’t have enough space you can move the images further up or down, whatever is not on the background will automatically be cropped.

You should end up with something similar to this.

Select your text tool and add your creation name and your name (if you want). You can adjust your text placement with the move tool too! Using a color that contrasts with the background color works the best. I find it helpful to drag the text layers to the top of the layer box in case of any overlap. I also use a 2nd text layer for adding my name. Save your file as a .png file type.

Your final product should look similar to this. I look forward to seeing your multiple image cover shots on the exchange!

The Antics of Stu-Ghost & Eric Season 3 - Chapter 4 – Can’t help... Oak Lodge – By Adler “Goodness me!” Stu-Ghost exclaimed as he got out of the car. “I didn’t realise how late it is already. It’s dark already!”

“I know, love!” Eric agreed. “Now come on!”

“I am starving!” Eric said as he made his way indoors.

“Oh! And I suppose the chef of the house wants me to cook?” Stu-Ghost joked. “No, no...” Eric fumbled over his words. “I wasn’t even thinking anything of the sort.” “Yeah, sure, you weren’t!” Stu-Ghost continued playing the fool. “I think I’m gonna like it here....” Stu-Ghost sang to himself as he had his first look around Oak Lodge. “And, the sun will come out tomorrow!”

“So what shall we have dinner then, love?” Eric asked. “I dunno! What do you fancy?” “I dunno either” Eric replied. “Well, for starters, let’s see what there is in the fridge!” Stu-Ghost giggled, deliciously enjoying toying with Eric.

“We could use some of this...” Stu-Ghost said, as he started passing Eric some ingredients... “And some of this...” he said, passing Eric more ingredients...

“Right Mr funny!?” Eric suddenly asked. “That’s a lot of ingredients! What are you up to?” “Ha ha! Who me?” “Yes, you!!” Eric laughed back. “Not me, my dear!” “What? What do you mean?” “I mean US, dear!” “Us?” Eric frowned. “Yes. We are going to have a cooking race!” “A what?! What’s that?” Eric was sounded so befuddled. “A cooking race! We both make something and we will see at the end which is the better one!” “You are kidding!” Eric said, putting his hands on his hips. “No, no. I am not. I am soooo serious. Ready?” Eric just stared at Stu-Ghost for a moment, wondering if Stu-Ghost was being serious or not... but before he could gather his thought Stu-Ghost shouted: “Ready, steady, GOOOOOO!”

“Oh my!” Eric yelled as he suddenly got stuck into chopping.

“Food glorious, food...” he started singing. “Oh no! Please! Not that one again!” Stu-Ghost exclaimed, chopping furiously.

“I can chop any veggie faster than you...” Eric made up the song... “Ha, ha! You’re crazy!” Stu-Ghost grinned at Eric.

“Not half as crazy as you, love!” Eric grinned back, still chopping. “No, you can’t!” “Yes, I can!” they continued singing. “I can make any dish better than you!” “No, you can’t!” “Yes, I can!”

“I can use any spice better than you!” Eric sang...

And for more you will have to visit Stu's thread on the TSS forum..................
