SOUTHERN WEDDINGS CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA

PHOTOGRAPHY / EMILY MARCH

Coastal love and editor-in-chief of Southern Weddings magazine and blog, Lara Casey brought all the light and airy style of a home near the water to the woodsy farmland of Chapel Hill. The carefree aesthetic of their home goes hand in hand with their motto: "You can't take it to Heaven with you." So their toddler, Grace is free to touch, sit on and play with most anything in the home (safety first, of course!)

In addition to a lovely residence, Lara has an even lovelier office on the second floor. It's here the four talented women gather to put together the beauty at Southern Weddings and the curated Lara Casey Shop. Having her work just upstairs is so convenient for taking care of her kids, and an added bonus of four wonderful role models for Grace. H O M E 24 | S M I T T E N M A G A Z I N E /

More washable slipcovers in the dining area and a rustic sisel rug for easy cleanup. Potted plants make great centerpieces. They are easy to change out with the seasons and last much longer than cut flower. We love the mismatched ceramic and wooden vessels.

Many marvel how the mother of two (about to be three) little ones can live with white furniture. Her brillant secret... slipcovers! Everything can easily go into the wash after a mishap. Many of their pieces are inexpensive finds that are easy to part with should something get damaged.

NEW SOUTHERN floral designers

vol 12

Q &A with HASK E LL HARRI S

3 words for Garden & Gun's aesthietic. Grit. Glamour. Soul Trend yays and trend nays. I’m not a big trend person, but I do admire designers and individuals with great personal style, who know what they love, regardless of the hype in the industry and all around us on social media and beyond. So in that way I think it’s always better if you take inspiration from folks but you listen to your gut in the end and do your own thing. How does G&G's Southern sensibilities influence their broad readership? There’s a exoticism about the South that’s appealing to people from all over the world. And Southerners appreciate both high brow and low brow in everything they do, which gives G&G a realness, an approachability while also being incredibly glamorous and beautiful. What colors are inspiring you? Anything with a great story behind it. We just painted our guest bedroom a hue that was inspired by the dining room of the Nathaniel Russell House in Charleston. I have a dear friend who works for the Historic Charleston Foundation and I’m such a fan of what they do (and of her!) and I love that association and the history behind the hue at that particular house museum.

G&G recently published a great feature focusing on a few Southern floral rock stars. Modern floral design is accessible with a variety as never before. What accounts for this? With social media outlets like Instagram, floral designers are acheiving a sort of celebrity status. Followers get a daily does of beatiful new designs foraged and farmed from local sources. By focusing on the best of a season and area, arrangements are more dynamic and intriguing then ever before. The designers and farms we featured each have a unique way of sourcing their blooms and benefiting their community. Moonflower Designs of Athens, Georgia grows all their own flowers at their 3 Porch Farm. Traditionalist, Maxit Flower Design of Texas, takes a classic approach to her florals, but still includes arcitectural elements like cactus pods or aloe vera from the arrid landscape. Using their knowledge of community gardens, these New Orleanians started beautifying overlooked city lots by planting a variety of flowers. Herbs and produce also find their way into Pistel & Stamen's ecclectic creations. These three designers are just a small sampling of the variety of talent, point of view, and process taking over the floral industiry.

Richmond, Virginia's sweet tooth expert relives special memories with her handsome husband to celebrate their Eighth Anniversary.

Amanda, owner of Sweet Fix Custom Cakes in Richmond, Virginia makes stunning and delicious cakes to celebrate her clients' love stories, but these images are all about her own relationship and marriage. To celebrate their eight year wedding anniversary Amanda and her husband, Bizhan, chose her family’s Chesapeake Bay cottage in Moon, Virginia. Nestled in the quaint County of Mathews, it provided a relaxed and southern style backdrop. Little has changed in Mathews County, there are still no traffic lights, just adorable storefronts, quiet roads and historic homes, truly give the sense that you have gone back in time. It is 38 | S M I T T E N M A G A Z I N E /

no wonder that Amanda and Bizhan go there to relax. This quiet and peaceful town, with enough crabbing, boating and oyster shucking in one day to last you a year, is the perfect place to turn off your motor and breath in the bay air. Amanda and Bizhan wanted to highlight some of their favorite past times while embracing the style and period quintessential to this small town. Reliving their memories of impromptu picnics on the side of the road, bike rides to secluded swimming holes, portrait sketching, the appreciation of a wellmade martini, and antiquing made this session all the more intimate, and their chemistry is stronger than ever!

HOUSE of BOYS SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA

PHOTOGRAPHY / JULIE CAHILL

Artist and marine biologist, Caryn Owen and her husband bought a small beach cottage on the west side of Santa Cruz, California to raise their growing family. Proximity to the ocean and a great elementary school trumped a desire for square footage! Purchasing the small house has stretched her creative talents to re-conceptualize her family’s evolving relationship to their living space. Marine biology professor by day, Caryn created abstract paintings in the evenings and adjust the living space as needs changed. Her modern design aesthetic, strays far from minimalism and fluctuates between boho-chic and the clean lines of mid-century modern dÊcor. These philosophies pop up in her artwork as well. House of Boys features on her abstract contemporary paintings and their focus on color over form. H O M E 54 | S M I T T E N M A G A Z I N E /

Her paintings and her home reflect the vibrancy, style, and modernity of the Santa Cruz scene. Inspired by trends in fashion, decor, Northern California style and always the ocean, her home is both functional, and beautiful. Open kitchen shelves show a collection of cookbooks and plates with a few ecceltic pieces (like the vintage inspired clock radio) mixed in.

A great way to expand on square footage is by going outside and creating a welcoming patio. The colorful door trim, pillows, rug, and accessories give the container garden a vibe of year round blooms. Finsih off the space with seating for conversation and surfaces to set drinks and munchies.

the ARTIST AND

the BUILDER SAVANNAH, GEORGIA

PHOTOGRAPHY / IZZY HUDGINS

Abstract artist, Shea Slemmer, and brillant builder, Paul Miller, found their love nest in a Civil War era home with a long and mysterious past. Originally built as a private home just before the war began, the owner had difficulty paying his bills and the fourstory building eventually turned into a boarding house/brothel. Then about fifty years ago, the top two floors with boarded up leaving the lower floors to function as a funeral parlor. With little to no maintance on the upper floors, Shea and Paul have steadily been working through the rubble and beauty deciding what to preserve and what to update. The result is a stunning concoction of history, modern, repurpose and fine art. But the sweat equity is worth it as they enjoy an evening cocktail in the delightful breeze of their fourth floor master suite. H O M E 74 | S M I T T E N M A G A Z I N E /

Throughout the renovation process, Shea and Paul have lived in their home and moved their bed many times as new rooms became inhabitable. But finally, their fourth floor "tree house" is nearing completion. Taller than any building on the block, the live oak trees in the square out front barely reach the window sills.

TAST Y TRE AT / grandma’s butter bundt cake

- 3 cups sifted cake flour (not self-rising) - 4 teaspoons baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 1/2 pound unsalted butter, at room temperature - 2 cups sugar - 4 large eggs, at room temperature - 1 cup whole milk, at room temperature - 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract - Softened butter and flour, for the pan - 8 ounces whipped cream - 1 pint fresh strawberries, sliced

Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour a 12-cup Bundt pan with the softened butter, tipping out the excess flour. Sift the sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt together.

Add eggs, butter, vanilla, and milk starting on low speed, scraping down sides of the bowl as needed. Mix at medium speed until batter is light and fluffy, approximately 2 minutes.

Pour and scrape the batter into the prepared pan. Tap filled pan on the countertop to level the batter and remove any air bubbles. Bake in the center of a preheated 350°F oven for 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until cake springs back when touched in the center and toothpick comes out clean. Remove pan from the oven and place on wire cake racks to cool for 15 minutes. Invert cake so the cake comes out onto a plate, top side down. Let the cake completely cool before proceeding to next step. To assemble, cut cake in thirds to make three layers. Spread whipped cream on the bottom layer, arrange strawberry slices to make an even layer, place next layer on top and repeat with remaining layers, whipped cream, and strawberries. Garnish with edible fresh flowers if desired.

Multi-talented, Jessica Duthu, focuses on illustrations and screen printing in her Savannah, Georgia studio. After tapping into the mind of her six-year-old self, she creates charming drawings and fonts that celebrate childhood and imagination.

A sense of humor is sprinkled throughout her collection.

Her

collection of patches to celebrate childhood milestones is a particular favorite. Where else can you find something to commemorate a lost tooth, believing in monsters, or just being awesome? Decorate a playroom with colorful pennats with playful monikers: Little Monster, Baby Bear, or Happy Camper. Both adults and kids can look oh-so-dapper in her super soft cotton clothes.
