GOSSAMER

our featured contributor

Gossamer's constantly changing collection of vintage lovelies has been enchanting us since 2013. We asked Emme to share with us the ins and outs of her world renowned online shop, and get a little insight into who she has in mind as she travels the country finding her textile treasures.

the gossamer girl is:

ROMANTIC ORIGINAL UNPRETENTIOUS

"I think the classic Gossamer girl has a great sense of style. She’s not afraid to be different. A lot of my customers make bold and unconventional fashion choices and that’s one of the things that I love about what I do: seeing what my customers do with their Gossamer purchases when they post pictures."

Q &A with GO SSAM E R L A UR A GO R DO N

How do you find your garments? It’s actually very hard to find quality vintage nowadays and when you have a certain style like my shop does, it’s even harder to find in more quantities. I do buying trips all over the states several times a month and scour sometimes unusual places to source merchandise. It’s a bit exhausting, but I get such an adrenaline rush when I find pieces I love.

What do brides need, besides a dress? I think boudoir pieces should also be taken into consideration when buying the whole wedding attire. Every gal wants to feel her prettiest, and having beautiful lingerie could boost confidence on her wedding or honeymoon.

Trend yays and trend nays. I love the organic and foraged floral trend going on right now. To me, it feels more down-to-earth and approachable. I’m glad burlap and mason jars are gone. Honestly, I was tempted for my own wedding!

Favorite fashion period or designer? Right now, my favorite period is Edwardian and my favorite materials from that period are Princess and tambour lace. I feel like it’s very romantic and a bit bohemian (the 70s are making a comeback too), and those are two huge things I have in mind when sourcing. For designers, I currently love what Marchesa is doing. Their designs are super romantic, and I love their vintage-inspired cuts.

Tips for an EFFORTLESS wedding? From my own wedding experience, I would tell brides to just sit back, relax, and let the planners and coordinators handle the day of the wedding. You’ve already done so much leading up to the big day. Just know that not everything will go 100% perfectly and that is okay. You’re marrying your best friend that day and that should be #1 on your mind. Everything else matters so little with that in comparison.

Each guest chooses a ribbon and pulls. The silver charm at the end indicates a different type of luck. Some examples of good fortune: an airplane to indicate future travel, a baby carriage, even a frog for the friend that has kissed too many of her own frogs and is finally about to meet her prince. MAKE IT YOUR OWN HOW T O PUT A PERSONA L S TA M P ON YOU R W EDDING DAY

Anyone who’s planned a wedding in the Pinterest era knows how difficult it can be to narrow down your options. Whereas brides in years past have relied on a well-worn stack of bridal magazines to provide inspiration, today’s couples are bombarded by ideas—which can be a good and bad thing. While it’s great to have unlimited options, it can be tough to hone in on your personal style when you’re constantly exposed to everyone else’s.

So how are you going to set your wedding apart from the millions of others that have come before you? Here are five tips for putting a truly personal stamp on your wedding day.

Wearable flowers beyond the classic bout or corsage have been all the rage of late. From flower crowns to rings; now you can wear your blooms as a beautiful and fragrant statement necklace.

Steps / 1 | Keeping in mind the materials you have to work with, cut the cardboard and felt into the shape you want your necklace to be. 2 | Glue the felt to the cardboard and punch holes where you want your ribbon to go, then tie the ribbon long enough so it can easily be pulled over your head. 3 | With the Oasis floral adhesive, begin on one side of the necklace and start gluing down your flowers, succulents, air plants or other desired elements. 4 | Keeping a good design flow is key. Cluster colors together to make an impact or choose a focal point to add interest. Fill any open holes with reindeer moss and make sure to cover any details you want hidden. 5 | Voila!

LOVE IS A BIG DEAL

These self-proclaimed porch dwellers spend most nights over dinner with friends and good conversation. They love the outdoors, camping, gardening, hiking and especially their sweet pups. This wedding effortlessly reflects their loves in life and for each other.

Seventy-five of their closet friends and family gathered to attend the wedding at Travellers Rest, a historic plantation in Nashville, Tennessee. Jason's best friend officiated the ceremony, and a pair of musician friends played "Here Comes the Sun" as they walked down the aisle. Their dog served as ring bearer to round out the special people who participated in the ceremony. To commemorate when they first met, they served Pimm's Cup as a signature cocktail. The personalized pies are a favorite feature, and sweet ending to a most beautiful day. R E A L

The spirit of this outdoor wedding was hardly dampened by the untimely rain shower; old wooden palettes made for impromptu bridges, a sprinkling of straw helped with the mud, and the watery mist in the air made for even more beautiful photos. A jovial wedding party happily posed in the venue's wheat field, and evening glowed under rows of market lights. The wedding palette's grays and blues played over the saturated greens of the landscape. At the end of the night, guests grabbed mini jars of honey from the favor display where a small sign read, "Oh, honey! We're so glad you came." R E A L

Any wedding that opts for a multitude of beautiful cakes instead of one oversized traditional pastry is already off to a great start. Then add in a soft palette of summery pinks, corals and peaches with a few giant oak trees, and you have a lovely, memorable June wedding.

The bride and groom chose the historic Ribault Club on Fort George Island for their venue. The newly renovated waterfront clubhouse was built in 1928 as a playground for the affluent. Since then hundreds of beautiful events have graced the property, including Kate and Bryan's wedding. Julie Paisley captured every detail, from the charming signs, blush bridesmaids and refreshing popsicles. R E A L

Hayley and Matt found their ceremony location while geo tagging near Camp Keep, California. Prior to their wedding day, they wrote love letters to each other in matching journals, then traded and read them before walking down the aisle. They had an intimate wedding with only close friends and family under a magnolia tree followed by a reception with champagne and cake at a beachside park in Montana de Oro. Ashley dePencier spent part of the day photographing Hayley and Matt on the beach and wandering through endless trees. R E A L

When two artists get married, and one of them is in the wedding industry, planning their own nuptials can be quite a task to come up with ideas that are unique. Finding the venue at their favorite restaurant was the jumping off point. With a maximum occupancy of twenty, the guest list had to be carefully crafted. Next they filled the vendor roster with talented industry friends. For the ceremony, an artists' studio adjacent to the restaurant was the perfect blank space, and nod to their professions. The only thing they would do differently; make the party last longer. But an anniversary celebration with the same guests in the same space would do the trick. R E A L

The Lifestyle Session... allows for the creation of an honest series of photographs with body, content, soul, and believability. This can be achieved by pushing the concept of “storytelling. With a little bit of creativity and soul searching, you can set the stage and framework for your own unique story. Here are some of our favorite tips that we encourage you to consider when planning your own Lifestyle Session that truly reflects your personalities.

vol 12

/ S M I T T E N M A G A Z I N E | 153

LOCATION / ENVIRONMENT For now, forget the technicalities of an actual location.

Instead,

we

encourage

you

to

contemplate an environment that reflects your personalities and emphasizes your interests... a scene you might naturally find yourselves in.

How? Imagine completely submersing

yourselves into an environment where you find inspiration, happiness, love, and peace all at once. What would your surroundings look like? Mountains? Meadows? Downtown? Rooftop? Home? Paint a picture, and then try to find a location that fits this criteria.

STYLE / ACCESSORIES The more your clothing style fits in with your selected environment, the more natural, cohesive, & believable your story becomes. The key is not in “dressing-up”, but in accentuating your casual day-to-day look with style, texture, and accessories, which further offer true insight into your personalities. We recommend one outfit so that the storyline stays intact, and perhaps adding layers as the evening progresses. Together, your styling options should be coordinated utilizing a complimentary color palette while avoiding being overly “matchy”, all while retaining the same level of formality that fits cohesively into your session’s storyline.

Lemon Thyme Bars Lemon bars on top of buttery thyme crust

RECIPE CREDITS Lemon Bars / D.M.R. Fine Foods Salad / Pinch of Yum Galette / My Name is Yeh

Crust: ½ lb. unsalted butter ½ cup sugar 2 cups flour 2 T. fresh thyme, finely chopped ¼ tsp salt Lemon Glaze: 2 cups confectioner's sugar ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9 by 13 by 2-inch baking pan. For the crust, cream the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer until light. Combine the flour, thyme and salt and, with the mixer on low, add to the butter until just mixed. Dump the dough onto a well-floured board and gather into a ball. Flatten the dough with floured hands and press it into the greased baking pan, building up a 1/2-inch edge on all sides. Chill. Bake crust for 15 to 20 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack. For the lemon layer, whisk together eggs, sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, and flour. Pour over the crust and bake for 35 to 40 min. or about five minutes beyond the point where the filling is set. Cool to room temperature.

Pinwheel Salad

Potato Galette

Present this salad with all the ingredients divided

Salt and vinegar potatoes with caramelized onions

Salad: 1 cup pomegranate seeds 2 cups chopped baby kale 2 cups cooked wild rice ¼ cup toasted walnuts ¼ cup feta cheese

Ingredients: 1 large onion ¼ cup butter 1 T. kosher salt, or to taste 2 potatoes thinly sliced ½ cup white vinegar

Dressing: ½ cup minced shallot 2 T. olive oil 2 T. water 2 T. honey ½ T. apple cider vinegar ½ tsp salt 1 squeeze of lemon or orange juice

Instructions: Preheat oven to 375.

Instructions: Prep the salad ingredients (chop, rinse, toast, etc). Chill them in the fridge while you make the dressing. Mince the shallot and saute in ½ tablespoon olive oil to reduce the bite. When soft and fragrant, remove from heat and transfer to a food processor. Pulse the shallot with the remaining olive oil, water, honey, apple cider vinegar, salt, and orange juice until smooth and creamy. Toss the salad ingredients together with the dressing just before serving.

2 T. chopped chives black pepper, to taste ½ lb. pie dough 1 large egg ½ cup shredded Parmesan

Caramelize onions in 2 T. of butter and a pinch of salt over medium. Place your sliced potatoes, 1 T. of salt, and 1/2 cup of vinegar in a large pot. Fill it with cold water until the water covers the potatoes. Bring to a boil and then simmer on a low rumble for 15 minutes, gently stirring occasionally. Strain potatoes and pat dry. Heat remaining 2 T. of butter on a skillet over medium high heat, and then fry your potatoes in batches, for about 5 minutes each. Toss with the chives, black pepper, and additional salt and vinegar to taste. Roll your pie dough out into a 12 or 13 inch circle and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Whip up your egg with a splash of water and brush it onto the dough, leaving a 2-inch perimeter. In the center of the dough, layer up your toppings in this order: a sprinkle of cheese, the onions, a sprinkle of cheese, half of the potatoes, a sprinkle of cheese, the other half of the potatoes, any additional chives or black pepper. Brush the edges with egg and then fold them up around the potatoes. Brush the outside edges with egg, sprinkle with salt, and bake until the pie crust is nicely browned, 20-30 minutes.
