FROM THE EDITOR I couldn’t have said it better myself, Steve. That’s just what I’ve done—followed my heart. Welcome to Smitten Magazine’s re-launch! Why re-launch you may ask? Well, we’ve made some big changes these past six months, and now we’re a better version of our old self. I’ve always been the Creative Director behind this magazine full of pretty, but I have now taken the reins as Editor in Chief as well. I also have had the luck of keeping my super talented team, as well as bringing on some newbies. Meet Senior Editor, Kathleen McCormack and Beauty Editor, Pamela Lesch. You can meet the entire dream team on our website. Throughout this issue and future issues, you’ll notice many wonderful changes along with the same features you’ve come to know and love. Our theme this issue is Homespun Charm. From the rustic to the refined, we’ve curated some of the top trends and inspirations just for you. Our featured inspiration shoot is a stunner: a pony with a floral wreath around his neck. I die. We are also excited to introduce The Bridal Guide. We’ve broken down weddings into five categories we think are most useful to brides: Style, Beauty, Health, Etiquette, and Money. Many thanks to our featured contributor, Elizabeth Demos. It was such a joy to visit her in her Savannah, Georgia studio. It was seriously a Vintage lovers dream. Lastly, a huge thank you to all of my amazing team members. Elizabeth Demos is the purveyor of a full service design studio in Savannah, GA. Prior to establishing the design studio, she owned the successful retail home furnishings store @home vintage general, in Savannah’s historic district for nearly 10 years. Her discerning eye and knowledge of design naturally led her to the field of publishing. Elizabeth is known for her fresh approach to topics, production, photo styling, creative direction and crafting skills. The ease with which she delivers interesting and timely topics and projects have made her a sought after talent for both print and online media. Her editorial contributions have been featured in a variety of lifestyle and interiors publications, including Southern Living, HGTV Magazine, Country Living, Country Home, and Better Homes & Gardens.

Elizabeth has a gift for assembly and an eye for color, a fresh perspective and a keen sense of style. Her inventive skills and talents are infused with a vintage aesthetic. She is detail-oriented, organized and on trend. Her knowledge of antiques, wholesale and retail markets have put at her fingertips an endless supply of unique resources that find their way into each and every project Elizabeth produces. The afternoon Victoria and Jordan wed, the sprawling, intimate grounds of Healdsburg Country Gardens felt more like Downton Abbey than Sonoma Valley. Their garden party nuptials had a delightfully British vibe. The lady donned an ever-so Edwardian cap-sleeve lace gown and elbow veil, the gent a dapper navy suit and pink gingham tie. Guests gathered in the barn for a three-course luncheon, then ambled to the lawn and spent the afternoon playing croquet and bocce ball. There were fascinators and French macarons, hydrangeas and lavender sprigs. Even Julian Fellowes himself couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have penned a more perfect scene. CAIT BARNETT

A little blue lake, a big red barn and a private stretch of pure white sand proved the perfect backdrop for this couple’s refined country wedding in the Florida panhandle. Hand-painted wooden signs and pattern-happy patchwork quilts echoed the homey charm of the lakeside farmstead, while pops of purple—the bridesmaids’ violet stunners, the groom’s plaid tie—brought girly glamour to the rugged landscape (as did Carlie’s bejeweled sandals). Even the trusty rope swing spoke to the occasion. Adorned with twirls of ribbon, it was truly a seat fit for a bride. CAIT BARNETT

Set against the backdrop of towering palms, luscious green landscaping and the Spanish-inspired architecture of the Hahn Estate, the wedding of California couple Marissa and Randy could not have been more easy, breezy or beautiful. The bride and bridesmaids blended contemporary and vintage elements in wearing simple sweetheart silhouettes gilded with metallic thread (the maids) and intricate beading on the bodice of the wedding gown. Marissa donned vintage jewelry for the occasion: earrings and her grandmother’s ring. Post-ceremony, guests were greeted with pops of color–deep purples, acid greens, vivid magentas, bright corals and pale pinks–in the form of texturally riveting floral arrangements that included succulents, orchids and spider mums, all awash in golden late afternoon sunlight. The skies might have been stormy on the Chesapeake Bay but inclement weather couldn’t cloud the jubilant nuptials of Vanessa and Rob. Perhaps it was the presence of all those horseshoes – the symbols of good luck served as seating assignments for guests – or perhaps the rain just couldn’t bring itself to pour on such an elegant affair. Beneath canvas tents guests dined family style, seated at long farm tables topped with patterned pink and blue china, and bouquets of cream-colored roses, blush pink peonies, gargantuan zinnias and blue hydrangeas. In the end, grey skies proved no match for the bride’s bright and ever present smile, the cheerful sky blue of the bridesmaid dresses and the energetic moves and get-downs on the dance floor. CB: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE VINTAGE WEDDING STYLE? ED: As I worked with clients, I quickly realized there wasn't a good reference for couples planning vintage-inspired weddings. Nothing really catered directly to that niche, so I dove in. Vintage is about tradition and family—and so are weddings. Some couples have an attraction to old things, but mostly it’s about connecting to their family’s specific past. I adore that. We’ve always had “something old” and “something borrowed” in weddings. Couples want to celebrate that sense of shared history.

CB: WITH SO MUCH DUBBED VINTAGE THESE DAYS, HOW DO YOU TELL TRASH FROM TREASURE? ED: The bad trend with vintage is too much of it. Remember that silly song on Sesame Street, “One of These Things (Is Not Like the Others)”? That’s how I treat every project. When you look at the big picture, the things that mean the most to you rise to the top. You don’t have to have every element. We have all this great eye candy, and it’s tempting to want it all. Know when to stop yourself. CB: WE LOVE THAT YOUR BOOK FEATURES AN ELOPEMENT. WHAT MADE YOU INCLUDE IT? ED: I’m a big believer in eloping. Just because you’re getting away doesn’t mean it can’t be special. Get a cake. Have a wonderful dinner. Dance. Do all the things you would have done. All those cute little characteristics can hold true for big scale, small scale, second marriage, fourth marriage, destination wedding. It can be as elaborate or as simple as you want it to be. CB: WHAT DOES EVERY VINTAGE WEDDING NEED? ED: Soul. The key to pulling off a great vintage style wedding is authenticity. Things have to have meaning for you. Don’t just pick something because it’s popular or you saw it online. It could be you’re wearing your grandmother’s dress or carrying your grandfather’s handkerchief. Make this your wedding.

CB: ANY VINTAGE TREND THAT HAS YOU PARTICULARLY SMITTEN RIGHT NOW? ED: Patterns! I’ve always loved vintage fabrics and I’m seeing more and more of them, from bridesmaids dresses to bowties to table toppers to all kinds of wonderful décor. It’s really happy. Last year and the year before, there were a lot of faded colors. This year, I’ve seen so much more color, really bright color. Vintage patterns are fun because you get great layers of happy colors.

Antique shows are typically more refined than flea markets or thrift stores so plan to pay a little extra for your treasures here. Reserve this jaunt for items that set your big day apart. Shows offer up larger furniture like dressers, farm tables, and benches that make handy accent pieces at your ceremony or reception and also find a place in your home after your event. Chandeliers and finer accessories are also frequently amassed at antique shows. Antique shows might launch you into an inspiration spiral so be careful you don’t sink into overload. Yes, you might think that 6’ tall cast iron birdbath would make the most beautiful focal point in your reception tent but do you really want to spend $$?? and where on earth will it go afterwards. Best leaving something like that to a vintage rental company.

Flea markets are quite possibly the best place to hunt for large quantities of things at fair prices. Boxes and boxes of vintage linens, silver-plated flatware, antique china, jars, bottles, and vessels of all types can all be found at a good flea market. And by good flea market, I mean the kind that sells old things rather than socks and used car parts. Unless of course socks and used car parts are a part of your wedding vision. Think about outfitting your sweets table with unique cake stands and footed bowls, big jars or wooden crates. One-of-a-kind flea market finds make the most impact when used on focal tables. Add special items to your guest book table, favor table, bar areas, and don’t forget food stations can always use great platters, stands or props but be sure to clear it with your caterer in advance.

#3 / E STAT E SA L E S

You never know what you are going to find at an estate sale, and that is part of the fun. After an intense wait in line outside of a home, the doors fling open and you rush in. There’s the initial scramble and then the circling to be sure you didn’t pass something up you absolutely need. Because of the nature of these events is it hard to say, “go with a list” or “be organized.” I say instead go with an open mind. You don’t have much time to contemplate purchases so be prepared to make quick decisions. Someone is inevitably on your heels waiting for you to put that rare pottery vase down so they can scoop it up. I love estates sales for great vintage linens, fabrics, and draperies. The generation most represented at sales lately, are the Mad Men generation so glassware is also in abundance. In the 50's and 60's cocktails reigned supreme so houses are full to the brim with fantastic bar paraphernalia as well. It might spawn an idea for a vintage inspired lounge area or a speakeasy vibe for your rehearsal dinner party.

Antique malls are one-stop shops for all things antique and vintage. Shops like these function like a co-op where assorted vendors occupy booth spaces offering up wares that vary from vintage clothing to jewelry to decorative accessories. Variety is the most attractive characteristic of antique malls so if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a lot of time head to your nearest antique mall. My best advice for shopping wisely at an antique mall it to check back frequently. Antique dealers like to showcase in antique malls because it frees them from shop sitting. They are constantly on the prowl for bargains, going to estate sales, auctions and antiques shows. They do all the footwork and bring objects into their booth spaces ready to go. In many cases the dealers represented in antique malls have a specialty so the booths feel curated. This is especially nice if you have a particular genre or time frame in mind. If for instance you want 1950's dresses for your bridesmaids then you hit the vintage clothing dealer. If you want sports memorabilia for a menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lounge area then look for someone that specializes.

When Tiffany and her groom, David, selected Blackacre State Nature Preserve as the setting for their wedding they fully embraced the rustic, country beauty of their surroundings without an ounce of kitschiness. Tiffany’s sweetheart ball gown hid a pair of cowboy boots, perfect for the couple’s outdoor nuptials. The bride and her maids, clad in ivory lace dresses and cowboy boots of their own choosing, each held a bouquet of ivory hydrangeas, deep orange ranunculus' and garnet mums, which matched the ties of the groomsmen. At the reception, bouquets of wildflowers were arranged in vintage tins and milk bottles, adding to the wedding’s pastoral rusticity and the intimate, familiar atmosphere. ANNABEL JONES

I’m a Southern girl, and what's more Southern than bourbon and bow ties. I wanted my name to reflect where I came from, and entice a sense of the South, no matter what part of the world my bracelets end up calling home. And yes, the extra 'E' is on purpose. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED DESIGNING THOSE BEAUTIFUL BANGLES?

Literally 7 months ago, after returning from living in Shanghai, I was inspired to create something. I brought home with me silk from the textile market and a few strings of jade balls. I wanted to give something to my friends and family, so I took the jade balls and after many many tries came up with something I was proud to give to everyone. Everyone loved them so much and encouraged me to keep going (because they wanted more) so I flew to NY that week and bought (an aggressive) 35 pounds of gemstones, and here we are 45+ stores later. WHAT INSPIRES YOU MOST WHEN IT COMES TO JEWELRY DESIGN?

My travels. I have seen such vibrant colors all over the world. And in every country there is one constant: colorful clothes and jewelry. I want to create something that is beautiful, colorful, and that women around the world would want to wear. Something

that transcends age as well, wether you are 15 or 85 I want to make something everyone would want to wear. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HOT COLORS THAT ARE TRENDING IN YOUR INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW?

Emerald green is so major. It's such an unexpected pop of color that is truly eye catching. WE THINK YOUR BANGLES ARE SO CHIC FOR BRIDESMAIDS. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BRIDES AND THEIR MAIDS WHEN SELECTING A SET FOR THE BIG DAY?

We recently launched our men's division. We have just added handcrafted bow ties, that you can either choose from a wide range of fabric or (this is my favorite) you can send us your fiancés old fraternity jacket or your grandfathers jacket, and we take the lining out of it and make a pocket square and then create an heirloom bow tie. Also, hand made oyster knives (that are amazing and engraveable). You can expect a lot from B&B in the feature, I love creating and that’s what I will continue to do.

wedding insurance 101 Throughout the wedding planning process, engaged couples are likely to confront a number of uncomfortable realities together: the reality that the ideal venue might not be available on their chosen date, the reality that the perfect wedding dress doesn’t look perfect on all body types, or the reality that the wedding budget might not stretch far enough to cover all expenses. The ultimate reality, however, is one that we often overlook or choose not to admit, and that is the fact that disasters may strike, even on your wedding day. Wedding insurance can protect the monetary investment a couple’s made from disastrous circumstances that are out of their control. Policies vary, but basic coverage (typically $125-$500) can include

disasters such as no-show vendors, bankrupt venues, ruined photography, illness and injury, severe weather that causes cancellation or postponement, etc. Before purchasing a policy, it’s a good idea to ask vendors for a copy of their insurance policy so that there’s no unnecessary overlapping coverage. It’s not a bad idea to consider liability coverage, as well as the additional option of liquor liability coverage. Every wedding is different and so is every insurance policy. Discuss all options with a reputable insurance agent and be sure to understand all of the details of the policy. One disaster that will not be covered by wedding insurance: cancellation of the big day due to cold feet.

Registering for your china and tabletop pieces is a creative process that will set the tone for many wonderful celebrations, be they formal or informal. While a big brand store can probably help with informal china, flatware and stemware, whenever possible, I recommend working with an expert registry boutique to get personalized service and guidance as you select your settings. Whatever patterns you pick, use your china on a regular basis. Enjoy it!

When setting a formal table, the critical element is geometric spacing. When each piece is precisely positioned, centered and balanced, the overall setting becomes a beautiful and organized arrangement. The overall table includes a floral centerpiece in the middle with equally spaced apart place settings and intentionally located utensils. Actual colors or patterns may vary from one event to another, but should always coordinate beautifully, if not match. Finer china, silver flatware and crystal stemware are most appropriate for formal settings.

When setting an informal table, the rules of geometric spacing are looser. Be more creative and expressive in your display. The china, flatware and stemware can be more rustic or casual and include more eclectic patterns and shapes.

Each place setting has a charger topped with a smaller first course plate. The charger remains on the table until the main course is served, at which point the dinner plate takes the charger's place. Utensils go on either side of the charger, with the first course utensils on the outermost part of the setting. The blades of knives point towards the plate. The dessert spoon goes above the plate with the handle pointing to the right, so it may "slide" down into position after the main course. The water glass is above the knives, and the wine glass goes to its right, slightly lower down. The bread plate, when applicable, goes above the forks at the top left. The overall picture should be symmetrically balanced.

An informal dinner may not include as many courses as a formal dinner, so you may not need as many utensils. Feel free to ask your guests to keep the same utensils throughout dinner, removing them only after the main course, before dessert. Follow the rules of formal settings for glassware and the bread plate so there is no confusion between guests as to which belongs to whom. Have fun varying china patterns as well as table and chair shapes and sizes. Consider how your setting, food and guests all come together to create a memorable and delicious evening to all the senses, and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll enjoy the process of setting your table, be it formal or informal. When Kara and Ben decided to wed on an over 100-year-old farm in the heart of the South, they drew inspiration from the land’s Victorian roots with the theme Rustic Elegance. She fit the part in a strapless gown and lace cap sleeve bolero jacket, and he in a polka dotted vest. Fancy-free details like hand-dipped buckeye candies, distressed flowerboxes and cornhole balanced out the formal tone of the attire. But it’s not the clothes or the cornhole that Kara remembers most about that day. Her favorite moment was that first glimpse of the groom. “Coming down the aisle and seeing each other for the first time was such a humble and beautiful moment,” she says. CAIT BARNETT

There’s just something about New York weddings that always sends us swooning. This one began on the exquisitely groomed grounds of the Conservatory Garden in Central Park, where Melissa and Tony exchanged vows. After the ceremony, the couple cabbed it to the Upper West Side to dine and dance in grandeur at Caffe Storico inside The New York Historical Society. If that doesn’t have you swooning, the groom’s favorite moment just might. It happened back at the gardens, when their daughter and flowergirl, Brooklyn, paved the way for her mom. “As my beautiful daughter—all dressed up with a crown of flowers in her hair—made her way towards me, she took my breath away.” Like mother, like daughter. Thread jewelry wire through button holes then tie in a firm knot. Leave additional length on either side to tie button to headband after assembly.

Cut the fabric flower from its stem. Set petals aside.

Apply glue to top of button. Layer fabric petals and yellow/gold pom-pom at top of button with glue. Hold firmly with your fingers until glue dries.

ST EP 4 Cut petals from translucent vellum and striped paper. ST EP 5 Apply glue to tip of paper petal. Tuck paper petals in between fabric petals. Set flower aside to dry. 206 | S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 2

Cut gold tissue paper into four even squares. Take a section and fold accordion style.

After the section has been folded, tie a knot in the center with jewelry wire.

Use a pair of scissors to cut the corners creating a petalâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;like shape.

ST EP 9 Attach the gold tissue paper to the headband. Tie firmly.

ST EP 1 0 Place the flower on top of the gold tissue paper. Tie firmly. Spread the gold tissue paper so that it frames the flower. Adjust accordingly.

ST EP 1 1 Use the gold ribbon to wrap the headband down both sides.

Stamp the mini envelope with white doctor bag stamp.

Use double-sided tape to attach the mini envelope to the front of the water bottle.

ST EP 4 Add the finger nail polish, with heart shaped ring, and a small clear bag of confetti, jewels, and pom-poms.
