SERDE PHOTOGRAPHIC GALLERY OF THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES OF THE CENTER
The Interdisciplinary Art Group SERDE is a non-governmental organization, which seeks to develop the regional and international collaboration between different cultural fields, organizations and professionals. SERDE’s activities create dialogue between arts, science and education, which includes organizing residencies, workshops, expeditions and publishing thematic notebooks, among other things. In 2016 SERDE was accredited by the UNESCO General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage to provide advisory services to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The Residency and workshop centre SERDE was founded in Aizpute during 2002 as a platform for international and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Our aim is to encourage professional’s creative development and long-term cooperation through participation in residency programmes. The residencies centre is located in the historical centre of Aizpute (~180 km from capital city Riga, 30 km from Baltic sea-coast) and the building complex is unique example of wooden and red bricks architecture in Latvia built on 18th century. The residency centre offers good facilities for creative work and rest. During the residence the guest is welcome to give a presentation or lecture for professionals and local audience.
Yard The space between the two buildings of the center is one of the most concurred area. It’s organized several activities, workshops as the wood restoration course, the iron cast symposium or Āboļošana, the apple festival in September.
INDOORS SERDE has conference room for meetings, seminars and presentations. Conference room is easy to transform for working space. Residents work and live in the same building. SERDE centre has 8 rooms, each room has 2 beds but it is easy to transform to single room. Few rooms is possible to transform to family apartments and add an extra bed. For short term residencies, meetings, seminars we have possibilities to host up to 20 people. The resident shares the studios, kitchen, and bathroom. Bedrooms are supplied with beds, mattresses, bed linen, blankets, and towels.
GROUND LEVEL
Hall
The biggest common space in the center where it’s organized activities, meetings, projections, workshops,etc.Also,it can be used for the artists in residence. There is a computer, a projector, a screen, and an electric heating system.
Kitchen The space is equipped with oven, ceramic cooktop, microwave, kettle, fridge, freezer and all the instruments required for cooking.
Living room Is one of the most concurred space in the center because it constitute the common space where the guests used to eat and spent the evenings. There are, apart from tables and chairs, a wood-heather system..
Laundry
Sauna
Next to the hall, our guests can find the laundry to wash their clothes and a bathroom attached to it. On the same ground level, there is another bathroom with a shower.
On the left side after the main door, there is an electric feed sauna with three showers. After twenty minutes of turning on it’s in the right temperature to use it.
Studio It is located next to the living room and have the majority of the SERDE’s book collection. They are mostly in Latvian, Russian and German but some of them in English. The general topics are arts, Latvian literature, Latvian history, and European literature.
FIRST FLOOR
Using the wood stairs we can access to the first floor. On that level, there are seraval rooms, one bathroom and some common spaces where our guests can spend their time.
Rooms
There are a total of eight rooms between ground level and first floor. We can host up to 20 people and the spaces can be modified for single, double or familiar rooms. All the spaces have a woodheating system, wardrobe and table.

WORKSHOPS
On the other side of the yard we can find four different workshops for the artists in residence and for organizing activities, symposiums, etc.
Ceramic workshop Equipped with a lot of tools, pigments, chemical materials, a potter’s electric wheel, and a potter oven.
Tool workshop In it, we can find several tools and equipment for working with iron and wood. Our assistants usually help guests to find the material they need.
Wood restoration workshop This is the biggest interdisciplinary working space indoor. It has some other tools and equipment related to wood and iron. Every year it’s used to host the iron cast symposium and the wood restoration course.
Photographic laboratory On the wood restoration workshop, there is an analogical photography laboratory. During the year it’s organized some meetings and activities with Latvian photographers.
