It is difficult for me to express just how excited I am that after two years as a virtual exhibition, the 2022 SMFA Art Sale returns to an in-person experience! I look forward to seeing you and the extended school community as we celebrate not only the great effort so many have made to make this a warm “welcome back,” but also the pleasure of engaging with art physically and viscerally once again. To spend time with this unexpected brushstroke, or that funky, fuzzy texture— to dwell on an artist’s techniques and the ideas that go along with them—isn’t that what it’s all about?
The SMFA Art Sale has been the leading contemporary art sale in New England since its creation in 1978. Presenting a diverse offering of works that are both visually engaging and thoughtprovoking, the sale showcases the immensely talented students, alumni, faculty, and friends of SMFA.

“The structure of the city and the structure of the mind are conflated in my paper constructions, paintings, and drawings. I’m interested in states of mind, how experience is translated into thought, how memories are layered, and how dreams jumble reality. Contemporary city grids and plans of ancient ruins are layered and edited along with references to mental networks. In my invented terrains shape and shadow interact invoking memory, presence, and absence.”

Peter Scott is a SMFA faculty member in the Department of Print & Paper whose teaching practice involves history & critical studies of print media. Recent exhibits include Talking to Tiepolo at Gallery NAGA, Boston, and Upon
Closer Inspection, a two-person show with Roger Kizik at the Chandler Gallery, Cambridge. He has been guest artist and lecturer at Artist Proof Studio, Johannesburg, and the University of Johannesburg, and was artist-in-residence and curator for the 1995 Johannesburg Biennale. Residencies include the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica Venice, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Franz Masereel Centrum, Belgium. His work is in the collections of the Boston Public Library, The Boston Athenaeum, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the New York Public Library. Ellen Shattuck Pierce is an artist living in Boston, MA, USA. She loves printmaking and its history as a decorative art, medium for protest, and for distributing knowledge. She embraces all three of these aspects by using relief cuts to create allegorical scenes of American life in her prints and wallpapers. Her work has been shown recently in Sharjah, UAE and will soon be on exhibit in Havana, Cuba. When not printmaking she is teaching art to five through eleven year olds in the Cambridge Public Schools and

“As a mother and a public school art teacher I have had a window through which to view the pandemic’s effect on families’ lives in east Cambridge, Massachusetts. I zoomed into two hundred and thirty homes to teach art to kindergarteners through fifth graders. Recording the pain, anxiety and grief over the past two years has resulted in a series of thirteen relief carvings I call the Covid Chronicles.”

She moved to Boston to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, she graduated from UMass Boston, and received her Ed.M in Arts Education from Harvard. My animations and collages are inspired by imaginary worlds, memories and the unconscious. Maya Erdelyi is an award-winning animator and artist. She creates intricate hand-made animations, collages and installations inspired by imaginary worlds, memories and dreams. A multi-disciplinary artist, Michael Ilisoi is primarily interested in the figure; he draws inspiration from his Romanian-American Identity and the figure’s relationship to interior spaces, specifically the bedroom. Cecilia Orozco is a Nicaraguan-Costa Rican artist currently studying at the School of Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Her art practice concentrates on drawings that fall under the spectrum of magic realism to express stories inspired by her Latinx identity and personal narratives.
“Themes I often go back to are family and childhood. I most enjoy creating artworks that showcase Latin culture in the bright and positive light that I know, but I also create works that deal with more difficult aspects of the same. For the viewer to find a story through small details and close look of my drawings is something that I strive for.”

TIFFANY SHEA YORK
Juan Omar Rodriguez is a curator of contemporary art based in Philadelphia, PA. He is a Curatorial Fellow at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). Juan Omar’s recent exhibition projects include Vernacular Glamour at the Cambridge Art Association, Linger and Flow at PAFA, TBD at Boston CyberArts, and SMFA at Tufts: Juried Student Exhibition 2019–2020 at the MFA Boston. He received an M.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from Tufts University in 2019 and a B.A. in Neuroscience from Oberlin College in 2017.
Yng-Ru Chen is the Founder and CEO of the Boston-based Praise Shadows Art Gallery, a hybrid space emphasizing exhibitions by emerging and mid-career contemporary artists, a retail space for art books and lower-value works made by artists, and mentorship for young talent. She also oversees Praise Shadows Art Partners, which works closely with artists to develop opportunities in emerging models of creativity and entrepreneurship— exhibitions, commissions, brand partnerships, new technologies, original concepts that no one has ever tried before. She previously worked at MoMA P.S.1, Sotheby’s, Asia Society, and Tattly.
Tiffany Shea York is the Assistant Director, Artist-in-Residence Program and Special Projects at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum where she manages one of the oldest Artist-in-Residence programs in the US as well as contemporary exhibitions, related materials, and public programs. She has worked with over 100 Artists from around the world and helped to realize 50 exhibitions and artist’s projects there. She is also the co-author of, In the Company of Artists, about the residency program and the artists involved from its inception in 1992 through 2020. Tiffany received her B.A. from Tufts University and holds a diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Before coming to the Gardner, she worked as a studio jeweler and the co-founded/ directed Boston’s White Elephant Gallery in the Fort Point Channel which exhibited work of up-and-coming artists in all media. She currently serves on the advisory board of TransCulturalExchange.
Matthew Woodward is a Senior Interior Designer at Hacin + Associates based in Boston’s South end. His design experience combines both boutique retail and high-end residential projects and his work includes award-winning residential interiors. Matthew received a Master of Arts in Interior Architecture from the New England School of Art and Design where his education included time spent abroad studying classical architecture and retail design in Florence, Italy. Previously, he spent eight years as a buyer of luxury home goods for major national retailers. A frequent guest critic at local design schools, he enjoys both the theoretical and applied applications of design. His work has been featured by Architectural Digest, Modern Luxury Interiors, Grey, Aspire, The Boston Globe and New England Home, among others.

THE SCHOOL OF THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS AT TUFTS UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1978, the SMFA Art Sale is one of the largest public art sales in New England. SMFA students (including anyone who ever took a class at the school), alumni, faculty, Boston area artists, and staff are eligible to submit work. Proceeds from the sale are split between the artist and SMFA at a percentage designated by the artist (never less than 50% to SMFA). The percentage that comes to SMFA supports financial assistance for SMFA at Tufts students. In the 2021-2022 school year, nearly 43% of Tufts University students and 56% of SMFA at Tufts students received financial assistance support. This sale, in addition to the generosity of those who also support the SMFA Annual Fund, is critical to providing emerging artists with the resources needed to hone their creative voice and engage in asking questions that matter for our society.
