Peyton Siler Jones
MA in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning ’22
Growing up in western North Carolina had a profound impact on Peyton, inspiring both her appreciation for the outdoors and career in climate policy and resilience planning. Her lifelong passion for understanding the connections between social and ecological systems led her to Tufts. “I was doing climate planning and policy work but wanted to go deeper on social justice and racial equity,” she says. “Tufts was really strong in all these areas.”
In addition to her studies, Peyton balances part-time work as a Climate Resilience Planner and Project Manager at Linnean Solutions.
“I let what I’m learning at Tufts inform my work, and I let what I’m encountering at work influence the questions I ask at Tufts,” she says.“ Through this program, I’ve been able to go deeper on big questions I’ve been dealing with in a professional context.”

TJ Pinto
Entry-level Occupational Therapy Doctorate ’24
Occupational therapy wasn’t the career path TJ planned for, but after his mother suffered a life-changing injury, it became his passion.
“Seeing her regain her independence was really inspiring to me,” says TJ, who spent the years after his mother’s accident shadowing occupational therapists and discovering his interests within the field. One such interest is hand and upper extremity rehabilitation — a specialization that sets Tufts apart.
Since starting at Tufts, TJ has enjoyed working collaboratively with peers and gaining realworld experience at the Walnut Street Center, a nonprofit agency serving adults with developmental disabilities. “It’s cool to get the opportunity to be hands on with people and help them do things independently,” he says.
“Ten years from now, I want to be an occupational therapist making a difference by helping the people I work with. As long as I can make a positive impact, I’ll be happy with myself.”

G. R. Marvez
Joint PhD Student in STEM Education and Cognitive Science
Marvez has always had an interest in teaching, earning their Massachusetts teaching license in science in college, but they started to think about how the tools used in classrooms actually get into the hands of teachers and students. From this, Marvez began researching the development of virtual simulations for teachers to practice leading controversial discussions and how machine learning models can be used for personalized feedback in student assessments during their undergrad and master’s at MIT.
Now a Joint PhD Student in STEM Education and Cognitive Science at Tufts, Marvez studies the intersections of educational game development, co-designing with communities, and funds of knowledge in engineering education in the Pérez Lab. “Tufts is an excellent place to do interdisciplinary work in education. Designing education technology and experiences like games require a vast array of skills that all can be found at Tufts and with their local partners.”
