eamwork makes the dream work,
Since my childhood, I've always wanted to stand on my own two feet, make my own decisions, and do my own thing. Despite a loving, warm, but also conservative upbringing, I eventually took the big step. On September 17, 1998, we founded Passe Partout, a bold move into the unknown. Although we knew what we were going to offer and for whom, we were unsure where the story would lead us, what it would become, and with whom we would work. Now, after 25 years, I am proud to say that we have come a long way, and I owe this success to the efforts of our dedicated team. All the nice people featured on the left-hand page of this book are a large group of talented people who work tirelessly to defend the colors of Passe Partout, whether in the office, on the road with our dealers, or in production. Although I have always had a lot of ambition, I know that it is the collective efforts of these people that have made my dream a reality. Our employees in our production facility in Hungary, although not all featured in this book, are also integral to our success. They ensure that our products are made with care and love, and we owe it to them for maintaining our DNA of producing quality furniture for warm families with confidence.

In the 1990s, when the sturgeon was not yet an endangered species, the first sturgeons from the Caspian Sea came to the Kempen region. The animals were housed in large ponds belonging to aristocratic families. This allowed the sturgeon to develop in the most natural conditions. Those same pools still harbour the oldest sturgeons, the DNA of 'Royal Belgian Caviar'.
M
ore than 100 years of producing flour for bakers and also producing specialised animal feed is what happened at the Turnhout site. Until a bright new challenge came along in the 1980s that brought a world of change. The principles of 'Royal Belgian Caviar' came about on the animal feed side. As sturgeon as a fish species began to become an endangered species, sturgeon production in aquaculture centres emerged in Europe. However, breeding sturgeon in closed centres did not run smoothly, because there was no proper nutrition for the mini sturgeon larvae. That is why European producers ended up in Turnhout. A challenge and a new opportunity came along. Because participating in European caviar production using the very latest techniques was, to put it mildly, an interesting perspective. Larvae were brought to Turnhout. Tests were carried out, with positive results very soon. So the thought of breeding sturgeon ourselves did not come as a complete surprise.

It took 12 years before the first caviar could be harvested. There were several reasons for this. First and most importantly, the sturgeons had to be sexually mature. Depending on the species, this takes 5 to 18 years. The first mature sturgeons were also not immediately used to harvest caviar, but rather to thicken the broodstock and so secure the future. A huge amount of research was needed during those 12 years. And caviar breeders in Russia and Iran were not immediately the most open personalities to share their years of experience with the Belgians. However, because the sturgeon became an endangered species worldwide, and they could also learn from the European experiences in aquaculture, knowledge was exchanged.
In 2002, the first caviar was harvested on Belgian soil. However, the annual volume of 150 kg per year was negligible, but the demand was there immediately, and it has only continued to rise since then. Top quality caviar, local production and a certain accessibility in consuming caviar have led to 9.5 tonnes of caviar being harvested and sold worldwide today. 40% of the harvest stays in Belgium and the remaining 60% goes to all corners of the world. Royal Belgian Caviar works with 5 different species of sturgeon, each of which produces a caviar with its own character, experience and taste. In Mouscron, they built an aquaculture centre to have 100% control on quality. Water quality, temperature and numerous elements are carefully controlled to always produce the very highest quality. Eating caviar used to be an elitist and out of reach for many. Russia and Iran therefore controlled the market of supply and demand. With the rise of European aquaculture farms, caviar has become more accessible. Caviar remains exclusive, but available and, for us Belgians, 'local'.

For many, a second home is a place to unwind. Passe Partout's second home is a place of mainly hard work. Hungary is where the Passe Partout blood flows to, to rough limbs, through delicate veins and into the heads of many practical thinkers. In Temse, Belgium, we can only be proud of our Hungarian colleagues. Over the past 25 years, not every assignment was easy. With the right commitment and a lot of dedication from the people in the factory, Passe Partout has been able to realise what stands today, 25 years later. Together we write history, together we undertake and together we are successful!

T
he Passe Partout factory is located in Salgótarján in northern Hungary, in a rough and wooded area close to the Slovakian border, and 100 km from the beautiful city of Budapest. The region is an ideal base for travelling around Hungary. Hungary is most often visited for its beautiful capital Budapest, but the rest of the country is also worth a visit. You can fly to Budapest in less than two hours, directly from Amsterdam, Eindhoven or Zaventem. Average summer temperatures range from 25°C in the northeast, near the Bükk Mountains, Aggtelek National Park and Lake Tisza, to 32°C in the
southwest and near Lake Balaton, the Mecsek Mountains and cities like Pécs, Kecskemét and Szeged. The Passe Partout factory is not that far from Bükk National Park. Bükk National Park is the green heart of Hungary with hillside forests with beech trees (bukk is the Hungarian word for beech), rivers, waterfalls, caves and lakes. The park has a nice network of hiking trails for nature lovers. Hungarian kings once loved to come here to hunt. Now it is an owl paradise and a favourite spot for insect lovers. Bükk is also a goldmine for butterfly fans.
Hortobágy National Park is located in eastern Hungary, near the city of Debrecen. It is Hungary's largest national park and covers an area of over 800 square kilometres. This nature reserve provides the image Hungary is known for: the wind-waved grass of the vast steppe ('puszta') with grazing herds of horses, sheep and long-horned Marha cows. The wandering herdsmen are called the cowboys of the puszta. Swamps and rivers interrupt the dry steppe, the 'sea of grass'. Storks, herons and cranes complete the picture.
Aggtelek (Jósvafõ) National Park (Aggteleki Nemzeti Park) is located near the border with Slovakia, in the central part of Hungary. It is certainly also among one of the most beautiful areas to see and is therefore listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its largest and longest cave in Europe.

In western Hungary lies Lake Balaton. The lake has an oblong shape and lies 100 metres above sea level, surrounded by volcanic mountains that rise up to 350 metres. Its limited depth of up to 11 metres means the water temperature rises to 25 degrees in summer. As Hungary has no sea coast, Lake Balaton is the beach destination. Find a spot on Siófok's 15-kilometre-long sandy beach during the day and later plunge into this resort's vibrant nightlife.

Are you still more looking for a city break and nature doesn't really tell you much? Then Budapest, with its diversity and great atmosphere, is really the city that should be on your bucket list. Budapest is a city full of beautiful sights, delicious food and good nightlife.
DON'T MISS GOULASH SOUP If you visit the Hortóbagy National Park, at the end of the day, settle down in one of the old inns that used to serve as a resting place for shepherds and horses and taste goulash soup, the famous dish of the puszta.
Hungary culinary SPICY SWEET PEPPER The sunny climate of the southern regions is suitable for growing sweet peppers from which paprika, the Hungarians' favourite spice, is made. They prefer to make the paprika as spicy as possible and use it to enrich their culinary specialities. Try the 'halászlé', a spicy fish soup - with a quenching glass of milk next to it to be sure. WHITE WINE PLEASE Explore the vineyards around Lake Balaton, such as in the Badacsony region. The fertile volcanic soil and the continental climate, slightly tempered by the lake, create favourable conditions for winemaking. Wine was already being made here by the Romans in the 3rd century. The region is especially known for its white wines. Tip: taste a glass of the fresh Olaszrizling wine while looking out over Lake Balaton and the rolling vineyards.

TASTE A CULTURE If you would like to spend a day tasting all kinds of local dishes, be sure to visit Budapest's central market hall. It is the largest of the 5 market halls built in Budapest at the end of the 19th century. The beautiful historic building attracts both tourists and local residents who do their shopping here. The smells inside the building are impressive. Especially the paprika you see there in many shapes, colours and sizes. It is recommended to go on Saturday mornings. Only then you will see how many people visit this market every week.

BULL'S BLOOD WINE The town of Eger, on the edge of Bükk National Park, is close to Hungarians' hearts because the inhabitants here drove the Turks out of Hungary temporarily in the 16th century and permanently in the 17th century. Symbolising the heroism of the locals in the first Turkish war is the 'Egri Bikaver' (bull's blood wine), a red wine from this region. According to tradition, the women of the town laced their husbands' red wine with bull's blood to make them more powerful, which led to success.
Szeged, the city where the sun always shines, at the southern tri-border point with Serbia and Romania. More than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year transform this city into Hungary's most colourful and warm-blooded. This vibrant border town is well worth a visit when you are in the area.

Old records are cool. Not just because of the nostalgia, the crackling sound and a certain collecting desire, but mostly because of the album covers.

arly in the history of the sound record, the front of the album sleeve often featured only the artist's name, possibly with a photograph of the artist. In the 1960s and beyond, record sleeves became increasingly artistic. For many artists, the sleeve became part of their image, and certain elements on a record sleeve sometimes functioned as the trademark of the artist in question. Several record covers have become more famous throughout history than the music itself.
An indie label or independent label is a record label that is independently funded and not affiliated with any of the three major labels: Universal, Sony and Warner. Independent labels range from home hobby labels to highly profitable, large companies. In the 1990s, the line between indie labels and major labels began to blur somewhat, and now some major indie labels are actually distributed by the three major labels.
During the glorious days of the LP, let's say in the 1970s, many a record sleeve was turned into a work of art. With the rise of the CD in the 1980s, vinyl still held an important place, thank God.
The independent labels often face an uphill battle to get their music heard, as they usually have much less financial resources to promote their music than the major labels. Despite the struggle, many independents have survived for years. Many others may not have lasted forever, but had a huge impact on music, both creatively and business-wise. In the 1990s, we find the burst of graphic design with which Adobe Photoshop and other programmes began to shape the images of many brands, products and services. New tools spread across the planet. Designers explored at full speed to achieve results that were very difficult to achieve in the most traditional way. This is also visible on many record covers from the 1990s.
With the arrival of Photoshop in 1990, the rise of indie labels and the large amount of money being made in the music industry, record covers became even more creative and artistic in the 1990s. For instance, many covers were created by iconic artists like Andy Warhol or Keith Haring.

Brightness, colour contrast and certain themes described that hugely spectacular tropical sunset or that difficult calligraphy that a computer could replicate very quickly. There are countless examples of all kinds of covers that used early computer graphic design to lay the foundations for what we are now immersed in. The swimming baby? Warhol's banana? The cosy gang on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? Many dozens of album covers have made unforgettable impressions.

Red Star Line was a Belgian shipping company that operated a regular service between Antwerp and New York and sometimes between Antwerp and Philadelphia. The company was founded in 1872 and its first ship sailed across the ocean in 1873. In 1935, the company went bankrupt as a result of the 1929 market crash.

etween 1873 and 1934, Red Star Line's ocean liners opened the way to new lives for some 2 million men, women and children.
THE STORY 1923, Millions of people cross from Europe to the US in search of a better life. Jan and Marie are a happy couple. But farm life looks less prosperous, as smaller farms struggle against the rising automation that only manor farmers can afford. When Jan gets the chance to work as an engineer in America, he accepts the offer. Marie will later travel after him. Manipulation and ignorance, however, cause their love to be in danger of being ruined by distance. When tragedy strikes the working-class Steyaert family, father Steyaert decides to flee to America, hoping to build a new and anonymous life there. However, the great crossing is not without danger. Will all family members arrive safely at their final destination?
Red Star Line Museum is a journey into the past and an encounter with the present. Migration may have taken a different face by now, but the human side of migration is timeless and universal.
THE MUSICAL Red Star Line, the grand follow-up to the iconic musical 40-45, is a Studio 100 showmusical full of drama and humour, suspense and emotion focusing on the search for a better life. The story of Studio 100's spectacular musical is based entirely on the life stories of Red Star Line passengers, told in the museum's authentic buildings. For this show, the Red Star Line Museum shared its expertise to ensure the historical accuracy of the musical. Immerse yourself in a wonderful spectacle that takes you on an unseen adventure, from Antwerp to New York, on land and on water. The combination of moving theatres, impressive sets and a very punishing cast make for an unforgettable once-in-alifetime musical experience. Colours affect people’s moods Warm, neutral shades and whites always form the basic colour palette. Influenced by the flow of nature, colour is often toned down to earthy tones such as terracotta, deep green or mild brown. With the right styling, we talk about warm minimalism. Small accents with vibrant colours, and even black highlights are also increasingly gaining their place in interiors.

Light illuminates the heart Light can no longer be ignored in contemporary interiors. Glass areas and transparency already made their entrance in the 1990s and this light-filled trend has only continued and developed. A room with lots of light, also appears optically more spacious. Apart from exterior light, artificial light sources are also a mood creator, or they can provide the right focus on certain items in the interior.

Partying is in our DNA. Food, drinks and music were there from the very beginning of Passe Partout. And where else would we do it better than at every fair, house show or other event. We and our colleagues and supporters have very warm memories of those very first fairs. Every year we also celebrated the birthday of our front man, Dirk Steenbeke, during the Brussels fair. Memorable moments are made when customers and team members were dancing at the tables.

Lobster Soup à la Passe Partout For those who remember the lobster soup of the early days, this might be the biggest surprise. In fact, the preparation of Passe Partouts' lobster soup is much more straightforward than you might think. In fact, the base is a tin of lobster soup from a Belgian supermarket (crossroads in French). And believe it or not: we added bits of fresh fish and seafood to make the flavour even more intense and to serve a deliciously rich soup. Voilà, after 25 years the secret is out.

ver the years, two dishes have always been served with great passion: lobster soup and Dirk's paella. In the early years, our biggest concern was: 'How do we get customers to our booth? And how do we keep customers on our booth for a long time?' Foodies as we are, we mainly thought about food and drinks. So in a gastronomic country like Belgium, that's not such a crazy idea. We made lobster soup, because then our potential customers would stay for a long time. After 25 years, we know with certainty that it is not what we did, but how we did and still do it, that matters. Giving someone an experience that leaves warmth and a beautiful memory is what matters. So on our 25th anniversary, we are happy to share the small and bigger secrets of Passe Partout's exhibition food. Enjoy!

Paella à la Passe Partout INGREDIENTS FOR 6 PEOPLE • 2 shallots • risotto or paella rice (1 small cup per person) • 1 can of peas • 1 chorizo • tray of pink prawns • 2 chicken wings or chicken drumsticks per person • 1 kg mussels + mussel vegetables • 2 octopus rings per person • 1 red pepper • fresh parsley (chopped) • lemons • 2 to 3 scampi • 3l chicken broth • 1 teaspoon of real paella herbs
Normally, paella is made by first frying the ingredients, adding rice and pouring over with broth. The paella is done then when the broth is completely gone and a crust (socarrat) forms from lightly frying the paella. According to many, this is the tastiest part of paella. The Passe Partout style is different. We make it risotto style. We keep stirring gently and add the liquid little by little.

We always start by frying up the chicken legs or wings nicely brown in a wok pan. When these are ready, we take the meat out of the wok and fry the scampi in the same pan with olive oil. When these are nicely done, we fry the octopus rings nicely brown on a hot fire. Still in the same pan and olive oil. By now this has absorbed all the flavours of these ingredients well and will give an extra tasty flavour to the paella later. We take the octopus rings and keep them warm together with the chicken and scampi under an aluminium foil. In the wok, we will now fry some shallots glazed. Then pour 1 cup of rice per person into the pan and sauté for a few minutes, stirring gently. Then pour a nice splash of your chicken broth over the rice (or if you like, this can also be fish broth). We keep stirring gently at regular intervals. From now on, it will take another 12' until the paella is done and
keep stirring quietly and gently, adding broth at regular intervals. It should never get dry. Meanwhile, slice the chorizo and add it to the rice. Whenever the liquid is almost absorbed by the rice, add another dash of broth. Meanwhile, in another pan, fry your mussel vegetables and prepare the mussels in the usual way, shaking well and keeping them well moistened. Again a few minutes later, add to the rice the paella seasoning and the red pepper cut into small pieces. Again a little later, add the pink prawns, scampi, chicken and octopus rings to the preparation. In the last 5 minutes, add the drained peas and drained mussels. Stir everything gently. In the last 2 minutes, stop stirring to avoid breaking up your ingredients. Paella is ready when the rice is cooked. You finish with parsley and for the look some quarters of lemon spread over the pan.

isiting the MAS is quite an experience. As you explore the building from bottom to top, you enjoy a different view on each floor. For instance, Luc Tuymans' hidden artwork 'Dead Skull' becomes more and more visible. And the highlight is of course the roof of the MAS. On the roof terrace, you can catch a view of the city, the river and the harbour. An unmissable apotheosis of your visit.

Antwerp is the city on the Scheldt. At the place where city and port meet, you will find the impressive MAS. In permanent and changing exhibitions, you will discover numerous stories about Antwerp, the river, the port and the world. Let yourself be guided up the escalators of the promenade and discover a different exhibition on each floor. At " Feest!" you will learn all about colourful rituals and global traditions. The collection of art from pre-Columbian America is surely going to amaze you. The 'Cargo' exhibition takes you through the eventful history of Antwerp's contacts with the world via the port. In turn, 'Antwerp à la Carte' shows the city's close relationship with food, from the distant sixteenth century to the distant future. Families with children can reflect together on what a 'home' means to them in the playful family expo 'Anyone at home?' The temporary exhibitions are also always worth a visit.
The promenade leads like a glass spiral along 7 museum rooms, each turned a quarter turn. Escalators guide you to 9 floors up. Along the way you discover Antwerp's rich history in the world and the world in Antwerp, the promenade treats you to stunning views of the city. Higher every time, different every time. And at the top, on the roof terrace, a 360-degree view of the city, the port and the world awaits you. The outer facade of the MAS is clad in deep red Indian sandstone from Agra (northern India). 3,185 Little Hands were applied to it which - referring of course to the Antwerp Little Hands - keep the MAS straight, so to speak. ©MAS-Michel Wuyts

AN UNUSUAL ARCHITECTURE The MAS is a huge contemporary warehouse. Its unique architecture is based on 19th century warehouses typical of the city and the MAS district. Stacking the museum rooms on top of each other and turning them a quarter turn each time creates an impressive spiral tower. This promenade leads you upwards past all the museum rooms. At the very top, a breathtaking panorama of Antwerp awaits you.
Inside, the red surface of the promenade is broken up by the same number of medallions. Writer Tom Lanoye and graphic designer Tom Hautekiet pay tribute to city, port, stream and world. Just as the museum does. The unique building was designed by the worldfamous Neutelings Riedijk Architects. They won the architecture competition in 2000. The jury absolutely loved their stack house or warehouse that portrays the historical function and atmosphere of the site like no other. And their ingenious vertical city walk that offers an unseen view of all corners of the city and the harbour also charmed the jury.

Sinia Kft. was founded in 1999 by Passe Partout and employs just under 200 people for development, business office, HR, financial and production.

The wood and cushions are produced in-house. The wood is cut by the latest CNC machine on a pre-programmed schedule with the latest nesting software, the cushion is made entirely inhouse, using a combination of feathers, sponge and Virgin fibre. All fillings are produced with carefully chosen materials from certified companies. Stuffing is done 100% by weight, which is predetermined by development for each sector. A back cushion consists of at least 9 and sometimes 20 different sectors that are filled separately at predetermined weights. Sewing the cover and assembling the wooden frame is done on day 2, the foam application on the wooden carcass is done on day 3. The glue used for the furniture is 100% water-based and is glued and processed in specially made extraction booths.
A
brief description of the production process, is what follows. We go through the process from when the raw materials are ordered till delivery. When planning an order, we consider several aspects, the first is whether there is enough upholstery time available, the second is whether we have enough fabric in stock. If these two important aspects are available, the sofa can be produced within 4 to 5 weeks from receiving the order. The lead time of the production process is 5 days from the time of the scheduled production week. The process starts with cutting fabric and sometimes leather to size. Production of the seat and back cushions and woodworking begins 1 week later. In the cutting department, upholstery is cut 1 week before the sewing process before being transferred to the sewing workshop, at the same time the woodwork is cut and cushion production begins.

Then, on the 4th day of production, the upholsterer receives the foamed frame, the sewn cover, the back and seat cushions, the legs and the metal frame from the warehouse, if required for the production of the chosen model. Upholstering is carried out by expertly trained upholsterers. They have received a 2-year in-house training with love and precision for the job.
After upholstering, the furniture is assembled on "the mat" and inspected by quality control. After receiving all paperwork, the inspectors can evaluate and check the furniture, then the furniture is photographed and can be packed for transport. The packed furniture is sent to the warehouse where it is automatically prepared in delivery order for the scheduled truck, from where it is delivered to customers on the notified delivery date. This is carried out by specialised furniture carriers who have been working for us since the foundation of Sinia Kft. The furniture is then installed by the retailer at the end consumer who can enjoy a high-quality and lovingly produced Passe Partout product for years to come.
