welcome President’s Report 2009

Report from the Chair of the Board of Directors 2008-09

St. Michael’s College School has completed the third year of its five year strategic plan by continuing to implement its three main initiatives.

I’m pleased to offer my own thoughts as Chairman of the Board. Having been associated with St. Michael’s for the past four years, I am deeply impressed by the College’s commitment to Catholic education for young men in Toronto.

The construction of the new Performing Arts Centre made dramatic progress and is on target to open in the spring of 2010. As it takes shape it is clear that it will be a beautiful building with first-rate facilities that will enable our boys to experience all dimensions of live performances. The Learning Centre completed its second year of operations helping students with particular learning challenges and supporting their teachers. This year the classroom was renovated and up to date equipment was installed. Next year we will add another full-time staff person to assist Ms. Csenge. Our bursary and scholarship programme continues to grow. Next year we will have over 30 students receiving full or close to full tuition support. These are bright young men mainly from the core city who could not otherwise have afforded to come to St. Mike’s. As well, SMCS continues to offer partial help to many other families who need it. The total amount that the school is offering in financial aid and scholarships has grown to $1.5 million.

It is remarkable to see the continued growth and development of St. Michael’s College School. Without a doubt the new Performing Arts Centre is going to make a great contribution to the life of our community, but there is much more. The school is forming tomorrow’s leaders. Its academic excellence, athletic prominence and spiritual vitality all contribute to making St. Michael’s an outstanding centre of learning in the Catholic community. The Basilian Fathers are honoured to be associated with St. Michael’s through the many years of its existence. The school is committed to the ideals set out in the Basilian motto, “teach me goodness, discipline and knowledge.” As such, we look forward to continuing our ministry for many years to come. Sincerely,

All of these initiatives have been made possible by our kind benefactors who show their gratitude for what St. Michael’s has meant to them by giving generously of their treasure and time. St. Michael’s and the Basilian Fathers are so fortunate to have such wonderful friends and we remember all of them in our daily prayers and Masses. Sincerely,

Fr. Timothy Scott, C.S.B. Chair, Board of Directors

financial report ...the School will continue to be fiscally responsible in setting tuition fees and controlling costs to ensure the viability of the school for years to come. For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2009 the School’s Current Fund had a deficit of $1,349,370 from operations which has deteriorated from last year. We realized that given the economic climate that we needed to keep tuition fees at a minimum so we implemented increases for the 2008/09 school year that we knew would not cover all of the cost increases in staff salaries and benefits, student bursaries and major building maintenance. We also realized early in the year that our enrolment would decrease by approximately 20 students. We set our budget targets accordingly and we achieved those targets. It should be noted that this loss was reduced by a contribution of $700,000 from the St. Michael’s College High School Foundation. Net loss for the school was $163,103 after Foundation support and investment income. The other operations of the School, namely the Capital Asset, Scholarship and Building Funds had also deteriorated from last year as a result of lower revenues from donations. Capital spending continues to focus on building improvements and “state-of-the-art” educational tools with approximately $500,000 spent annually. Williams & Partners have audited our financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2009 and they have expressed an unqualified opinion on the fair representation of our financial statements. For the next few years the school will face cash flow challenges as it builds and pays for the Performing Arts Centre. We have made plans to borrow funds as needed. As we look forward to next year we can be encouraged to see that enrolment is increasing. As well, the School will continue to be fiscally responsible in setting tuition fees and controlling costs to ensure the viability of the school for years to come. In closing, I would like to thank the faculty, staff, parents and students at the school for their continued support of the school, especially during these difficult economic times. Yours truly,

principal’s message Leadership, spiritual wisdom and example as well as daily direction are elements that assist with developing a strong Catholic focus. Another successful year has been completed at an amazingly fast pace. St. Michael’s College School continues to flourish as a result of the collective efforts of all the different stakeholders. On a regular basis, the rich array of gifts and talents are displayed. Academically, students continue to excel. The vast majority of students carry averages beyond the 70% mark. Well over half the school maintains averages of 80% or greater. Alumni involvement in the school remains strong as evidenced by their support of school events such as career day and Homecoming. It is great to see former students providing direction and leadership to current students. The support that the parent community provides to school life is outstanding. Their participation on committees, as well as their attendance at events, enriches the experience for both their sons and the school at large. The activity level at the school, as well as the academic success, would not be possible without the commitment, of the staff. Their ongoing support on a variety of fronts allows for the students to enjoy a very rich experience. Leadership, spiritual wisdom and example, as well as daily direction, are elements that assist with developing a strong Catholic focus. The Basilian Fathers continue to provide this necessary support to ensure complete student development. There is definitely a feeling of pride which permeates the walls of the school. The total ownership and commitment of the different stakeholders allows for this result. The 2008-09 school year was a very good year. Sincerely,

Joseph Brisbois ‘67 Principal

co-curricular highlights Clubs and Activities • Anime Club. The Anime Club met every other Thursday to watch films and discuss animation techniques, latest films and visual styles of the Japanese art form. John Wakefield, as president of the club, organized meetings and end of the year celebrations. Moderator: Ms. Slowkowski • Asian Chess Club. The Asian Chess Club was initiated by students at the school who were interested in playing Chinese Chess, Korean Chess, and similar games. While very different to European Chess, the games also require strategy and concentration. The Club is open to all students interested. Moderator: Fr. Reddy, C.S.B. • French Club. The French Club strives to afford students studying French the opportunity to develop an appreciation for the French language and culture through a variety of activities. Students meet on a monthly to bimonthly basis. This year, French Club members watched French movies, took part in a Halloween scavenger hunt on campus, learned about how Christmas is celebrated in France and other Francophone countries, prepared les crêpes for Mardi Gras, prepared les oeufs mimosas for Easter, had lunch at a French restaurant and much more..... On vous attend! Moderator: Mlle Di Meglio • Good Shepherd Refuge. In 2008, Good Shepherd Centre served an average of 900 meals and snacks each day, a 25% increase over 2007. St. Michael’s students have been serving food,

making beds, and sorting food at the Good Shepherd Refuge for the last 15 years. Moderator: Mr. Bissonnette • Irish Club. “In its second year, the SMCS Irish Club continued to be a visible presence in the school community. Club members attended both welcome nights and were kept busy answering questions from prospective students. The club met each week for a variety of activities related to Irish culture. These included playing the Irish sport of hurling, challenging the Asian Club to two soccer matches, watching Irish films and making club t-shirts. The highlight of the year was the Green Shirt Day, held on the Friday before March break, which the club spearheaded. Moderator: Dr. Doyle • Italian Club. The Italian Club is the promoter of Italian culture at SMCS. Every year it organizes a briscola and a foosball tournament and a “festa della salsiccia” day. It provides interested students the opportunity to enjoy cultural events outside the school such as plays and visits to museums. Moderator: Mr. DiLeo • Art Club. It’s all about doing art without due dates or marks while listening to music! How great is that! The Art Club is held on Thursdays after school for all students regardless of their grade or their artistic skills. Students have the freedom to choose their own subject matter using materials ranging from clay, metal embossing to silk screened t-shirts to name a few. Some select students also have the opportunity to work on the various drama and musical set designs. Finished artwork was showcased at

the Annual Art Show in May. Moderator: Mrs. Pignetti • The Blue Insider. This past year marked the advent of a true student voice at St. Michael’s, the SMCS Insider. This newsletter, founded by grade 12 student Jonathan Emmanuel, featured news, sports updates and much more, all from a student perspective. The Insider produced six issues over the course of the year, and is in good shape to grow and expand its horizons in the coming years with new leadership taking over. Moderator: Mr. Walsh • Challenge Award Program. This program is open to grades 7 and 8 students to encourage their involvement in the life of St. Michael’s College School. This would include doing volunteer work at the school, attending school events/games, being physically active and learning a new skill. This program is an introduction to the Duke of Edinburgh program available in grade 9. Moderator: Ms. Cserer • Community Outreach Program. For the past several years, St. Michael’s students have been helping to improve the lives of elementary students in needy areas of Toronto. Volunteers mentor students in literacy skills, reading, writing, mathematics and homework completion. In 2009, our students donated over 300 hours to this valuable program. Weekly volunteers mentored 50 St. Alphonsus students. The program concluded with a graduation party in which the St. Michael’s students presented their St. Alphonsus counterparts with t-shirts, a St. Michael prayer card, and a graduation certificate. Moderator: Mr. Fischer

• Daily Blue/Tower Media. This production team consists of a group of student volunteers dedicated to keeping St. Michael’s students and community up-to-date and informed with all the latest news on video. Their work is delivered each and every morning to the homerooms via in-class projectors and then sent to the world via the St. Michael’s website. Moderator: Mr. Walsh • Debate Club. McGill Debate Tournament: Eight St. Michael’s debaters travelled to Montreal with Mr. Mancuso in October to compete in the McGill University Tournament. Matthew Barozzino and Aaron Crighton reached the quarter finals and ranked 9th. Hart House Debate Tournament: Eight St. Michael’s debaters travelled to U of T with Mr. Mancuso and Mr. Vella in February to compete in the Hart House Debate Tournament. Matthew Barozzino and Aaron Crighton reached quarter finals and ranked 3rd. National Debating Championships in Regina: Senior debaters Aaron Crighton and Matthew Barozzino travelled with Mr. Vella to Regina, Saskatchewan to compete in the Canadian National Debating Championships. Moderators: Mr. Mancuso and Mr. Vella • Destination Imagination. This program is the world’s largest problem solving competition. It taps into the different multiple intelligences of each student. Its main program is an unconventional team learning experience where student teams all over the world solve mindbending challenges. Teams are tested to think on their feet, work as a team, and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of the challenges. Students gain more than just basic knowledge and skills – they learn to unleash their imaginations and take

14

unique approaches to problem solving. Moderator: Mr. Bazzocchi • Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This internationally recognized program was developed to encourage youth over the age of 14 to voluntarily challenge themselves in four areas of personal development – community service, physical activity, skills, and adventure tripping. The Awards are designed in ascending standards of achievement: Bronze, Silver and Gold. For more info, visit their website – dukeofed.org. Moderator: Ms. Cserer • Film Club. The year began with students attending the movie Passchendaele at the Toronto Film Festival. The club members collaborated to write, produce, act and direct two videos during the year for morning announcements, Stooge and Men In Blue. The Film Club had great support from both St. Mike’s staff and students which made the club a great success. Moderators: Ms. Allevato, Ms. Csenge, Ms. Cseser • Game Maker Club. After learning how to make most of the basic game types like mazes and Mario-style platforming games, every member was able to design, animate and program their own game. Moderator: Ms. Allevato • Green Council. The Green Council continued successfully and diligently this year to raise awareness of environmental and animal welfare concerns within the St. Michael’s community through a number of letter-writing campaigns, poster campaigns, student-led petitions, in-school environmental audits, and an expansion of our recycling programmes. As always, our goal was to bring a recognition of the reality of God’s blessings in creation and to foster a sense of responsibility in our calling to be good and faithful stewards. Moderator: Mr. Quinn

• History Society. The St. Michael’s College School History Society officially began in January of this 2008/2009 school year. The first task undertaken was the annual newsletter. The hope is for this review to be a yearly publication and insight into the topic of history as written by students from SMCS. The club and its members have extended outside the school as the first and only Canadian member of the prestigious National History Club of the United States. The society hopes to continue its growth and popularity around the school as we continue appreciating history. Moderator: Mr. Giancola • Jr. Math Club. The Jr. Math Club met weekly on Day 4 during lunch periods A and B to practice for the University of Waterloo Pascal and Cayley math contests, which are scheduled annually in mid February. Grades 9 and 10 students who scored in the top 10 for each of the contests, were invited to write the Fryer and Galois contests, respectively, in April. Although the contests are open to all mathematics students, Math Club members felt they were better prepared due to exposure to old contests and preparatory work done in the club. Students that did well in the contests will receive their medals and certificates of distinction at Awards Night in the Fall of 2009. Moderators: Mrs. Dankowycz and Mr. Coghlan • Law Society. This year, the St. Michael’s Law Society entered the Ontario Charter Challenge. The scenario this year forced the teams to argue a case relating to a student’s right to freedom of expression within a school setting. The teams put together legal arguments for the Court of Appeal representing both the appellant and respondent positions. Moderators: Mr. Lee and Mr. Mancuso • Outdoor Education. In an age of urban growth that seems to have no end, combined with recreation

programmes for young people that are largely competitive, most young people who live in urban areas rarely find opportunities to experience rural or natural settings. The Outdoor Education programme at SMCS provides students with many unique experiences that are far outside of our daily experience. The experience begins with the leadership provided by senior students in the school. They attend a leadership camp in the Spring and are trained to be counsellors for the various other camps that operate during the year. The grade 7 and 9 camps are used to create an atmosphere of school harmony. The group work and activities are all cooperative in nature and facilitated with the aid of senior students. New students make new friends with others in their grade and some of the senior leaders. The grade 10 experience involves a canoe trip for all PHE students, a Music experience for music students, an Art experience for Art students and a Destination Imagination workshop. Moderator: Mr. Fifield • Prefects. A select group of students who perform invaluable services for the St. Michael’s community through various activities and functions where members of the public have occasion to meet the student body. Moderator: Fr. Fulton, C.S.B. • Photo/Video Club. This year’s edition had seven members and as usual was involved in the photographing and videotaping of our varsity sports throughout the school year. The video club’s year culminated at our prestigious athletic awards banquet with the computer editing and presentation of an impressive video/music collage highlighting our year in sports. Moderator: Mr. Thompson • Pro-Life Club. The Pro-Life Club completed its first year having brought together a variety of students with a

common concern for raising awareness of the dignity of all human beings and their right to life from conception until natural death. In October, over twenty students participated in the Life Chain at Yonge and St. Clair. This was followed up by an Advent Awareness Campaign designed to show the humanity of the Unborn Christ. During Lent, we participated in the Forty Days for Life including the daily recitation of the Rosary after Mass. Finally in May, the Pro-Life Club sent fifty students to Ottawa for the National March for Life; for the first time, several of our students also attended the Youth Conference the following day. We hope that these leaders will continue the important work we began this year. Moderator: Mr. Stokes • QUEST. (Question, Understand, Explore, Support, Trust) is an initiative aimed at promoting interfaith dialogue between high school students representative of the three monotheistic religions – Catholicism, Judaism and Islam. The purpose of QUEST is to make positive connections between youth helping them to identify cultural similarities and thus engender understanding and appreciation of the diversity found within our society. The program is a wonderful complement to the grade 11 World Religions course. Moderators: Mr. John and Mr. Stokes • Junior Reach for the Top. Competition questions may deal with science, math, literature, history, music, sports trivia and geography. Ultimately, the top eight city teams play in an elimination tournament to decide the winning team. At the Senior level, that winning team moves on to the Reach provincial championships. Moderator: Ms. Cserer • Senior Reach for the Top. Once again, our senior Reach team had a very successful year. They finished

the regular season in second place with a 14-2 record. In the playoffs, they lost in the semi-finals by a single question. Along the way Aaron Crighton established himself as one of the premier players in Canada. Moderator: Mr. Tessaro • Robotics. LEGO Robotics Club is an original science experience. Learning time management skills and completing objectives is the real challenge. Moderator: Mr. Bucur • Social Justice and Leadership. Social Justice and Leadership are both student run organizations at St. Michael’s College School which try to raise awareness of injustice in the world and foster a culture of leadership. By discussing current events, we become aware of the world around us. Besides raising awareness, we also raise funds for charities and goods for the homeless. Our objective is to become global citizens who care for the world around us as well as leaders in our community. We believe it is our duty to help those less fortunate than ourselves. This year, we raised funds to continue to sponsor Henry, a boy in Uganda. We organized the 30 Hour Famine which raises funds for World Vision. With nearly 400 students participating, we raised almost 10,000 dollars! We also organized a very successful “Pennies for Poverty” competition and raised nearly 3,000 dollars in change. We are looking forward to making a difference wherever we can. Moderator: Ms. Slowkowski • Sports Injury Program. The program’s chief responsibility is to handle the emergency care of our athletes during sporting events on campus. It also works to refer injured students to appropriate professional health

graduation report … Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge are the foundations of the lives of the graduates and the great importance of nurturing goodness in their lives. Graduation Exercises were held on Thursday, June 25th 2009. Eucharist was celebrated at Holy Rosary Church. Fr. Redican was presider and homilist and was joined by Frs. Patrick Fulton, John Malo, William May and John Reddy who concelebrated. Fr. Cecil Zinger and Fr. Glenn McDonald were also in attendance. Fr. Redican’s homily was focused on the gospel reading from Matthew of the parable of the house built on strong foundations. He spoke of how Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge are the foundations of the lives of the graduates and the great importance of nurturing goodness in their lives. The graduation ceremony was held in the school gym which was full of proud parents, grandparents, relatives and friends. The Convocation Address was delivered by Mr. Michael Enright, the renowned CBC broadcast journalist, who received an honorary St. Michael’s diploma. Mr. Enright humorously recalled his days at St. Michael’s in the early 1960’s and expressed gratitude for the lessons he learned from Fr. David Bauer, C.S.B. his history teacher, and from Fr. Joe Penny, C.S.B. who taught English. Diplomas were presented by Principal, Mr. Joseph Brisbois to 197 graduates of whom 115 were Ontario scholars, having achieved 80% or more in six university preparation subjects. Top honours went to Keith Lee who had the highest average in the class. He received the Fr. Matthew Mulcahy Scholarship as well as the Medal of the Governor General of Canada. Igsung So placed second and received the Fr. Albert Butler Scholarship, as well as the Dr. William Anderson Exit Scholarship. John Paul Piazza received the Fr. Joseph Penny Scholarship for achieving the third highest academic average. Others honoured included Michael Bazzocchi who received the Millennium Scholarship and the Spiritus Trophy for the graduate who best embodies the spirit of St. Michael’s and Jonathan Emmanuel who received the Marc Santi Memorial Award. The exercises concluded with the Valedictory address delivered by Domenico Di Carlo who fondly recalled the experiences of the Class of 2009. We are proud of all of our graduates and wish them well in the future.

advancement Thank you to all of our donors who have graciously and generously stood by St. Michael’s and supported our many programmes and initiatives with their financial and/or gifts-in-kind donations. These gifts have been very much appreciated especially during the difficult economic times of this past year. One important initiative has been the Archives and Museum. In 2008, the Archives were relocated to the second floor of the arena which has been extensively renovated to house the historical records and many artifacts. The old St. Michael’s Majors hockey suites were converted into archive storage and office space while the “birthday room” is in the process of becoming the new museum. A new HVAC system was installed and filters applied to the windows and lights to protect the artifacts. Displays were created for the Homecoming and Turkey Roll during this year to generate interest and to show some of the collection. As more alumni become aware of this facility, more are coming forth with artifacts to help tell the St. Michael’s story. The long-term goal is to promote the proud heritage of our school to current students through our curriculum. Many continue to support our annual giving fund and the capital campaign; Building On Strong Foundations and the following pages reflect those who have donated. Several alumni have stepped forward to establish bursaries in the memory of Basilian Fathers who have touched their lives, these bursaries are: The Fr. Leo Campbell, C.S.B. Bursary was established to assist a student who is a member of the Music programme and is unable to afford the tuition cost of a St. Michael’s education. The Bursary was created in honour and memory of Fr. Leo Campbell, C.S.B. whose musical talents and contributions to the St. Michael’s community are missed. The Fathers Ron and Bud Cullen, C.S.B. Bursary was established in 2008 to assist an incoming grade nine student-athlete, preferably a member of the Toronto Junior Argo football programme, who is unable to afford the tuition cost of a St. Michael’s education. The Bursary was created in honour of Rev. Ron and Rev. Bud Cullen, brothers and Basilian Fathers who have dedicated their lives to their students’ Catholic education. This bursary is for one half of the current school fees (includes tuition, textbooks, blazer, shirt, tie and if required, transportation). The Bursary is committed to the candidate who continues to qualify academically until graduation. The Fr. Rocco Volpe, C.S.B. Bursary was established in memory of Fr. Volpe who passed away in July, 2007. Fr. Volpe was a former student, teacher, coach and chaplain at St. Michael’s College School. A kind and gentle man, Fr. Volpe spent much of his life devoted to the teaching profession. He was known for his love of athletics, the arts, languages and learning, and was especially proud of his Italian heritage. The Bursary was established in consultation with Fr. Volpe’s family. Equally important are those that also gave of their time volunteering. Thank you so much for lending your support, time and expertise! You make our events and office run so much smoother.

arts centre report St. Michael’s College School Performing Arts Centre Following a nine (9) month design process, construction of the new 440 seat Performing Arts Centre commenced with the demolition of the former priest’s residence in July of 2008. The layout of the new facility was carefully designed to be integrated with the existing school building, both functionally and aesthetically. For example, solid limestone piers from the residence courtyard were salvaged and will be re-erected as part of the lobby façade. The Arts Centre has been carefully planned to provide an intimate performing space and a rich learning environment. The facility hosts a gallery dedicated for the exhibition of student artwork. Intellectus Project Management (IPM) managed a lengthy Site Plan Control and permit application process that was successfully completed in November of 2008. The demolition was completed during the month of September and in October foundations commenced. The tower crane was erected in December, which allowed Eastern Construction (ECCL) to commence with the extensive formwork and concrete pouring of the Theatre walls. Despite difficult weather conditions throughout the winter, the project proceeded on schedule with the Theatre walls being topped off by the end of March 2009. The forming and pouring of the stage and orchestra area continued through the month of April, which also saw the commencement of mechanical and electrical work on site. Structural steel for the roof and lobby arrived on site in mid-May and erection commenced. The steel was lifted into place by the first week of June followed by the steel roof decking. Masonry work also commenced in June. By June 30th, work on the roof, the exterior brick, stucco, mechanical and electrical systems had all commenced on schedule. The target completion for the construction of the Performing Arts Centre remains the first week of January 2010, following which, there will be two months of theatre equipment installation (e.g. motorized rigging, stage lighting, draperies, etc.) The tendering process was carried out over a six-month period in a sequential fashion by ECCL acting as Construction Managers. There were 33 separate contracts tendered and awarded. All theatre equipment was tendered through IPM. The original construction budget, including the motorized rigging, was 9.7 million. The contract cost, as awarded, is 9.5 million. Changes to date are approximately $150,000 (1.5%). The project remains on budget and on time. St. Michael’s College School Annual Homecoming On Saturday, September 27th, 2008 St. Michael’s College School hosted its annual Homecoming and saw the biggest turnout yet! The day was full of different sporting events, activities for the kids, school tours, Mporium Sidewalk Sale and performances by the very successful and talented SMCS Sr. Concert Band as well as football halftime performances by the SMCS Jr. and Sr. Drumlines. The official book launch of “St. Michael’s College 100 Years of Pucks and Prayers” took place and the Archives was officially open for the first look at the new archives. Due to the success and popular demand of Hockey Day at St. Mike’s (January 13, 2007) this year was the first time we featured a variety of hockey games including a staff vs. student and alumni era games.
