Mr. Silberschlag is music director and conductor of the Chesapeake Orchestra and The River Concert Series in Maryland, co-director The Alba Music Festival held in Northern Italy, St. Mary's College of Maryland Symphony Orchestra and The Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Silberschlag has recorded as conductor and/or trumpet soloist with The London Symphony, The London Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, The Romanian State Symphony, The Czech Radio Orchestra, The Warsaw Philharmonic, The Seattle Symphony, The Chesapeake Orchestra, and The Maryland Bach Aria Group. He has appeared on more than 150 international television broadcasts for The RAI (Italian Radio and Television), Eurovision, and IBA (Israel Broadcasting Authority).

Among thousands of concerts, Mr. Silberschlag points out as highlights his performances with Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras at The Arena di Verona, The Christmas Shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and his concerts with Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink, Mstislav Rostropovich, Zubin Mehta, Isaac Stern, and his collaboration with Ben Bradlee as narrator.

Jeffrey Silberschlag is a Professor of Music at St. Mary's College of Maryland, The Head of Music Performance and the Chair of the Music Department.

Jeffrey Silberschlag Jeffrey Silberschlag has distinguished himself in the world of music, performing as conductor and trumpet soloist throughout Europe, the United States, Russia, China, Japan, and Israel. His performances have been described as “compelling” by Germany’s Kolnische Rundschau; “extraordinary” by Italy’s L’Arena; and “outstanding” by Fanfare Magazine.

Mr. Silberschlag is music director and conductor of the Chesapeake Orchestra and River Concert Series, co-director of the Alba Music Festival and its Young Artists Program in Northern Italy, The St. Mary's College of Maryland Symphony Orchestra and The Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra.

On November 15, 2011, at a performance in Prague, Mr. Silberschlag received the Prize for Artistic and Cultural Activities from the European Union of the Arts, for his lifetime achievement in classical music as a conductor and trumpeter. In December 2013, Mr. Silberschlag was inducted into the Society Famija Albeisa of Italy. Mr. Silberschlag is a recipient of the Bowie State University's Octave Higher Award, awarded for his work fostering collaboration between diverse communities, He is a recipient of an honorary Doctorate presented by the Big Brother-Big Sister of Southern Maryland Award, and a co-winner of the Norton T. Dodge award for creative and scholarly achievement.

He serves as Head of Music Performance and is the current Chair of Music Department at St. Mary’s College 2

of Maryland and is the recipient of the Steven Muller Distinguished Professor in the Arts Award. He has been a faculty member since 1988.

Mr. Silberschlag has appeared as guest conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Soloists, Orchestra Filharmonici di Torino, Symphony Orchestra of Rumania, Bulgarian Philharmonic, La Scala Virtuosi, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Salzburg Chamber Orchestra, and the Moscow Academy Chamber Orchestra.

He has collaborated which such soloists as Anne Akiko Myers, Hilary Hahn, Jose Cueto, Yi Jia Hou, and Lara St. John (violinists); Maxym Anakushin, Bruno Canino, Brian Ganz, Eliza Garth, and Jeff Chappell, (pianists); Giuseppe Nova and Yoshimi Oshima, (flutists); Giampiero Sobrino and Jon Manasse, (clarinetists); Catrin Finch, (harpist); Judy Blazer, Kate Baldwin, and Melissa Errico, (Broadway vocalists); Vonda Shepard, Jane Monheit, Ethel Ennis, and Hilary Kole, (Jazz vocalists); Maria Kanyova, Tonna Miller, Susan Narucki, and Olivia Vote, (Sopranos); John Wallace, Andrew Balio, and Terrence Blanchard, (trumpeters).

In addition, Mr. Silberschlag has combined musical genres by blending orchestral performances with such artists as The 5th Dimension, Blues guitarist Linwood Taylor, the Paul Reed Smith Band "Dragons," the No Class Today Bluegrass Band, and the Brazilian band, Grupo Saveiro.

He has directed premieres of works by composers Morton Gould, Lorenzo Ferrero, Ludovico Einaudi, Paul Chihara, Chou Wen-Chung, David Froom, Kenji Bunch, Judith Shatin, Scott Wheeler, Perry Goldstein, Nathan Lincoln-DeCausatis, Lou Karchin, Vivian Adelburg Rudow, Judah Adashi, and William Thomas McKinley.

He has presented master classes at the Kyoto University of Performing Arts, Japan; the Prague Conservatory, Czech Republic; the Royal Academy of Music in London, UK; the Beijing Central Conservatory in China; the Aosta Institute for Music, Italy; and he has directed in performance the orchestra of The Cleveland Institute of Music.

Mr. Silberschlag has held principal trumpet positions with the Italian National Symphony RAI- Torino, Jerusalem Symphony, and the New York City Opera National Company.

Recent releases include two re-releases of his recordings on Naxos, "The Music of Morton Gould" and "The American Trumpet," and a world premiere of Arnold Saltzman's Choral Symphony No. 4, "The Halevi," with The Romanian State Symphony. Of his recording of McKinley's "And the Presidents Said," with narrator Ben Bradlee at Abbey Road Studio, Fanfare Magazine wrote that he is "a virtuoso trumpeter par excellence whose conducting is equally praiseworthy."

Together with his wife Deborah Greitzer, their families include seventeen professional musicians.•

Since 1994,

the Chesapeake Orchestra has provided worldclass professional music to over 600,000 appreciative people in Southern Maryland. From the beginning, the orchestra’s repertoire has been broad, and its musicians equally versatile. An evening’s programming often features symphonic works partnered with other diverse genres, such as blues, jazz, and rock. The Chesapeake Orchestra has premiered many works, including those by William Thomas McKinley, Paul Chihara, David Froom, Scott Wheeler, Nathan Lincoln-DeCusatis, Jeffrey Mumford, Jan Raats, Chen Yi, Kenji Bunch, and Judith Shatin, Vivien Adelbergrudow, Perry Goldstein, and Judah Adashi.

Since the Chesapeake Orchestra took up residency at St. Mary’s College of Maryland at the River Concert Series, the Series has become the cultural and tourist destination for Southern Maryland, winning the Governor’s Tourism Impact Award. It was noted in a recent article that concerts performed by the Chesapeake Orchestra have brought the community together, as about 5,000 people come every Friday evening from mid-June to the end of July to enjoy orchestral concerts that offer programs with musical themes designed to reach the broadest possible audience. Genres such as bluegrass and blues are often fused with orchestral instrumentation. Guest artists have included the Ahn Trio, violinists Anne Akiko Meyers and Lara St. John, country star Suzy Boggus, Broadway star Kate Baldwin, jazz vocalist Hilary Kole, and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard. The Chesapeake Orchestra has performed over 20 concerts at the National Harbor.

On September 5, 2014, The Chesapeake Orchestra was the first ever orchestra to play at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, although it had been Jefferson's dream to have a resident orchestra.

Founded in 1994 by Jeffrey Silberschlag, the Chesapeake Orchestra is dedicated to developing the availability of cultural, diverse, and enlightening musical experiences for the whole family. The Orchestra is comprised of some of the finest performers in the nation. It has performed with these same players over the past 22 years and has developed it's own distinctive beautiful sound. St. Mary's College students join the orchestra as well, playing side by side with their teachers. The Chesapeake Orchestra has performed at the River Concert Series since its inception in 1999, and they also perform regularly at a number of other venues in the area such as Leonardtown Square, Sotterley Plantation, Woodlawn Estate & Winery, and National Harbor.

Deborah Greitzer, Executive Director of the Chesapeake Orchestra, has divided her career equally as a performer and artistic director. She has held principal bassoon positions with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, New York City Opera National Company, Madeira Bach Festival, Alba Music Festival, the Italian Radio/Television Symphony Orchestra RAI-Torino, the Music Today Series in New York, and the Chesapeake Orchestra. She has performed with many of the world’s leading conductors, including Maxym Shostakovich, Rudolph Barshai, Gary Bertini, Gerard Schwarz, Raymond Leppard, George Manahan, Eliahu Inbal, Noam Sheriff, Hans Vonk, Vladimir Valek, and James Galway.

As soloist, she has appeared with the Jerusalem Symphony in Israel, the Hungarian Virtuosi in Budapest and Zagreb, the Czech Radio Orchestra in Prague, the Maryland Bach Aria Group in Verona, and the Chesapeake Orchestra. She has also given solo performances at Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory, Purchase University, Avery Fisher Hall, the Prague Rudolfinum, and the Jerusalem Theatre. Ms. Greitzer can be heard on Nonesuch Records Grammy Award-winning recording of George Perle's Serenade No. 3.

She has recorded with the Maryland Bach Aria Group on Crystal Records, and as soloist on MMC and Delos Records. Composer William Thomas Mckinley wrote two concertos for her that she premiered and recorded with the Seattle Symphony

and Prague Radio Orchestra, Gerard Schwarz, conductor.

Ms. Greitzer is a graduate of The Juilliard School and held a graduate fellowship at the Yale School of Music, Yale University. She is a two-time winner of the Artists International Prize for Chamber Music, recipient of the George Wellington Miles Award at Yale University, and a winner, with the Maryland Bach Aria Group, of the Norton T. Dodge Award for Creative and Scholarly Achievement.

She was invited by Pierre Boulez as the only American finalist for the IRCAM Ensemble in Paris, France, Pierre Boulez, Music Director.

Ms. Greitzer was the Artistic Director of the New York Times Foundation Young Performers Series, producing concerts in Bryant Park, Union Square Park and Battery Park. She was also the director of the Tidewater Ensemble at St. Mary's College of Maryland. During that six year period, the Tidewater Ensemble made its first appearances at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C. The Ensemble premiered works by numerous composers, including Morton Gould, William Thomas McKinley, David Froom, Lorenzo Ferrero, Vivian Adelberg Rudow, Paul Chihara, and Chou Wen-Chung.

Ms. Greitzer performed in the 1998 Broadway revival of "The King and I" with Marie Osmond and at the Kennedy Center with Haley Mills. She was also the bassoonist with Anthony Newley, in the New York revival of his show, "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off." She also worked with playwright Arthur Miller, and was the bassoonist for the New York premiere of his play, "Up from Paradise."

Ms. Greitzer is adjunct faculty in the Music Department of St. Mary's College of Maryland.

It is a pleasure to host you on our beautiful waterfront campus and wonderful to be in person once again, serving our Southern Maryland community.

As the National Public Honors College, St. Mary’s College – ranked fifth best public liberal arts college by U.S. News & World Report – has retained its commitment to the arts over the years. Lauded for her “theatrical magnetism” and “her big, rich voice,” American mezzo-soprano Olivia Vote joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera in the 2018-19 season for the first time for productions of Die Walkure, Suor Angelica, and Rigoletto, in which she made her house debut. In the 2019/2020 season she returned to the Metropolitan Opera for their premiere of Ahknaten and to cover Charlotte in Massenet’s Weather. In recent seasons, Olivia has also sung with the Inland Northwest Opera and Hawaii Opera Theater as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos with Cincinnati Opera, with the Atlanta Opera as Mary in a new production of The Flying Dutchman, a role debut as Adalgisa in Norma with

Opera Southwest, and her company debut with North Carolina Opera as Maddalena in Rigoletto. and workshoped several new roles and works. With Santa Fe Opera and Opera Philadelphia Ms. Vote worked on Jennifer Higdon's exciting premiere of Cold Mountain. Also with Santa Fe Opera she participated in the workshop of the premiere of The (R)evolution of Steven Jobs, by Mason Bates and Mark Campbell in San Francisco.

With the 21st Century Consort at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., she performed “Colors passing though us”, a chamber work written specifically for her by composer and friend David Froom. While at Opernhaus Zurich she created the role of Mary Hawkins in Frank Schwemmer's Die Schatzinsel and at AVA she sang the world premiere of Margaret Garwood’s The Scarlet Letter as Hester Prynne.

Ms. Vote returned to Opernhaus Zürich to sing Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos with Fabio Luisi and Flora in a new production of La traviata under Maestro Armiliato. She first came to Switzerland from 2012-2014 for the Internationales Opernstudio at Opernhaus Zürich. Highlights of her performances during this period included singing Fidalma in Il matrimonio segreto, Philomene in Martinů's Zweimal Alexandre, and as a soloist in Hans Neuenfels's new production, Wie ich Welt wurde, a co-production with the Zürich Shauspielhaus about the life of Richard Wagner. In addition, she performed roles in Rinaldo, La traviata, Meistersinger, Salome, and Rigoletto and covered roles in Madame Butterfly, Alcina, La Straniera, and Falstaff.

Prior to beginning her time in Zürich, Ms. Vote participated as a Filene Young Artist with the Wolf Trap Opera Company, attended the Academy of Vocal Art in Philadelphia, and Yale University.

In competition Ms. Vote won the first prize in the Jenson foundation Vocal competition and at the Partners for the Arts, Inc. competition in Virginia. She has been a grand finalist in the Francesco Vinas Competition in Barcelona and won second place in the Loren L. Zachary Society Competition, Alfredo Silipigni International Vocal Competition, Gerda Lisner Foundation International Competition, and the Fort Worth McCammon Opera Guild Competition. She is a grant winner from the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation, has been a New England and Mid Atlantic regional finalist and study grant recipient in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, was awarded a Sullivan Foundation Development Grant, and the Phyllis Curtin Career Award from Yale University.

Ms. Vote looks forward to future engagements at the Metropolitan Opera for the next two seasons. She will also be performing with the Florentine Opera in Verdi’s Rigoletto this fall.

LARRY VOTE

Larry Edward Vote is professor of music at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. An accomplished vocal soloist and conductor, he has performed throughout the United States and Europe. As a member of The Tidewater Ensemble he has been heard in, and conducted concerts, in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Baltimore Museum of Art, and Jordan Hall in Boston, as well as on regional and national broadcasts of this group. A founding member of The Maryland Bach Aria Group, Mr. Vote may be heard in music of Bach, Handel and Telemann on two compact discs published by Crystal Records.

He has conducted or performed as baritone soloist in the premieres of works by Gian Carlo Menotti, William Thomas McKinley, and David Froom, among others. He recorded McKinley's “Dallas, 1963” with the Slovak Radio Orchestra, which has been released on MMC Recordings. “Hearing the Call,” featuring new brass music conducted by Mr. Vote, was released on Sonora records in September of 1999. Mr. Vote served as resident musical director to Interact; a Washington D.C.-based theater company. With Interact he has performed and directed productions for The National Gallery of Art, The Folger Shakespeare Library, The Landsburg Theater, Arena Stage, and in a tour of the United Kingdom. He continues to serve as a yearly guest conductor for the River Concert Series and as co-artistic director of the Alba Music Festival in Alba, Italy.

The 1993 production of “The Pirates of Penzance,” for which he was music director and conductor, won the award for Best Musical in the 1994 Helen Hayes Awards. He was nominated for Outstanding Musical Director for the production of “H.M.S. Pinafore” in 1996 and again in 2000 for “Pirates of Penzance.” He is also holder of the Norton Dodge Award for Creative and Scholarly Achievement presented by St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

In his performance with Voices of the Golden Age, the Washington Post noted that "His reverberant reading of Bouvard's “Le Temple de Bachus” filled this aria with so much nobility and fervor that some real life thunderbolts outside seemed anticlimactic. •

JULIUS WIRTH Violist Julius Wirth enjoys an exciting and varied performance career. Presently Principal violist of both the National Philharmonic and the Harrisburg Symphony, he also served as principal violist of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra for nearly 20 years. His chamber music experiences have taken him to Italy, Germany, Austria, China, and many places across the United States. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where he studied viola with Francis Tursi, Marcus Thompson, and Jeffrey Irvine and chamber music with the Cleveland Quartet and Abram Loft of the New Arts Quartet.

He continued his studies at the Peabody Conservatory where he earned a Master of Music degree under the tutelage of Karen

JOSÉ MIGUEL CUETO

Violinist José Miguel Cueto was born in Puerto Rico, where he received his early musical training. After graduating from the Pablo Casals Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, he was awarded scholarships from the Institute of Culture of Puerto Rico and the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees, studying under laureate violinist, Berl Senofsky. During his time at Peabody he served as concertmaster of the conservatory orchestra and was chosen to perform Vivaldi's Triple Violin Concerto in the "Masters of Today and Tomorrow" concert series with his teachers Senofsky and Ruggiero Ricci, internationally distinguished violinists.

Cueto is in great demand as chamber musician, having performed with the Kennedy Center, Tidewater and Casals

Cueto has been admired by both the public and the critics for his "solid technique, as well as his rich and beautiful tone" (El Mundo, San Juan). STRAD magazine recognized Cueto's Carnegie Hall performance at Weill Recital Hall as "grounded, confident, and superb in all particulars." Cueto is concertmaster of Concert Artists of Baltimore and the Chesapeake Festival Orchestra. He is a recording artist and serves as artist in residence and head of the string department at St. Mary's College of Maryland. He is also lecturer for the Elder-hostel program at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University.

SARA JONES

The first place winner of the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition and semi-finalist in the American Traditions Competition, jazz vocalist Sara Jones has toured 49 states and performed in numerous concert halls across the country.

Jones has performed as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and Ravinia Festival Orchestra, under the batons of Emil de Cou and Erich Kunzel. An additional highlight includes a solo performance on the Esplanade with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra. In the Baltimore/Washington area, Jones

was a featured vocalist with the Jazz Ambassadors and has graced the stages of the Hippodrome Theater, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Strathmore Mansion, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Jones, who began her musical career as a pianist, received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at St. Mary's College of Maryland and her Master of Music in Piano Accompanying at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. After graduation, she chose to pursue a professional vocal career with the Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band, where she served for six years. Now a civilian, Jones maintains an active performing schedule and has recently released her debut CD, Daydream A Little on Petite Musique Records. A collection of beloved jazz standards and bossa novas, it features Jones and major Brazilian Jazz Group, Trio Da Paz. Jones’ schedule can be found on her website, sarajones.com.

Also an active educator, Jones is a professor at Towson University where she teaches Jazz and Commercial Voice and directs the Towson Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

Bryan Bourne has recently retired from the "The President's Own" United States Marine Band after nearly 30 years of active service. The last 23 years he was the band’s Principal Trombone. In that capacity he performed in the Marine Concert Band, solo trombone with the White House Orchestra and many of the Chamber Music Concerts. Bryan also performed in many of the PBS specials “Music at the White House,” which features many of the country’s finest artists from many different musical genres. He was a featured soloist on many concerts including 6 Concert tours amassing over a total of 200 solo performances of 35 different solo works. He is currently principal trombone with the Maryland Lyric Opera, Wolftrap Opera Orchestra, Washington Concert Opera, The South Florida Symphony Orchestra, the Chesapeake Orchestra and the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and was principal trombone with the RAI Orchestra in Turin, Italy in 1981. He was second trombone with the Baltimore Opera Orchestra for 20 years. He has performed with the Kennedy Center Opera and Ballet Orchestras and the National Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his orchestral experience, Bryan continues to perform regularly with The Washington Symphonic Brass of which, he was a founding member. They have just released their 7th CD of which Bryan has a few featured solos.

The Chesapeake Orchestra is a partner with the Alba Music Festival in Italy. The Alba Music Festival is in its 18th season. The Festival presented over 36 concerts in 12 days during its signature period in May. This year's festival included 6 orchestral programs.

The Festival has matured into an international music and art festival and includes a very important educational program.

During the 2019 Edition of the Alba Festival there was a significant new presence of professional musicians and students from Asia, in particular from Japan, South Korea, and China. There was an acclaimed violin soloist from Kazakhstan and musicians came from Russia and Egypt too.

In 2020, during the Pandemic the Alba Music Festival moved to online video and presented many concerts direct from ALba but also had contributions of material from artists around the world, including artists from the Chesapeake Orchestra.

Now in 2021, The Alba Music Festival will begin live programing on June 18 at The Ferrero Foundation and on June 19 The Festival Orchestra will participate in UNESCO ceremonies dedicating Alba and its famous vineyards as a "World Heritage Location."

The Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra

Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra Founded in 1964 by Maestro Angelo Gatto, The Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra based in Baltimore, now under the direction of Jeffery Silberschlag, is a group of talented young performers between the ages of 12-19.

These young artists are selected by competitive audition and are immersed in the great tradition of the orchestral repertoire.

In 2019, concerts were held at St. Ann's Cathedral in Washington, DC and Bowie State University's new Performing Arts Center. Most rehearsals are held at CCBC Catonsville's Performing Arts Building. Repertoire this past season included works of Beethoven, Hande Haydn.

They were selected by application and recommendation. They perform with the Chesapeake Orchestra but are particularly focused on Arts Administration during this summer, gaining hands-on experience supporting the complex operations of the River Concert Series, SMCM Music Department and the Chesapeake Orchestra.

From this experience, St. Mary's College has produced an impressive list of alumni, working at the highest level in professional performing arts administrative careers.
