Students who major in political science gain the ability to comment thoughtfully on issues of current political concern. They will be prepared for careers in government, law, lobbying, journalism, or public policy, and/or for continued study at the graduate level.

The political science faculty at St. Mary’s College includes two Fulbright scholars, the director for the Center for the Study of Democracy, the chief adviser for pre-law students, and the authors of several books. .

POLITICAL SCIENCE AT SMCM For those interested in government, leadership, and politics, St. Mary’s College offers a rigorous political science major, with courses in American, comparative and international politics as well as in political theory. The political science faculty help to develop in students a comprehensive knowledge of the political world, its systems, institutions and behaviors, and an understanding of the relevance of various political aspects, both theoretical and practical.

OUR ALUMNI BRANDON SCOTT ’06 is a member of the Baltimore City Council.

Elected in 2011 at age 27, Scott was one of the youngest members of the Council.

Other political science alumni work for the Department of Defense, the Department of State, USAID, The New York Times, numerous senators and representatives and for the city governments of D.C. and Baltimore

SMCM students studying political science have opportunities for summer internships on Capitol Hill, nonprofit organizations, law firms, and other government agencies through the College’s Washington Program. During the academic year, students can intern on campus with the College’s Center for the Study of Democracy and participate with its many events and guest speakers. The Schaefer Legislative Internship Program is a competitive option for SMCM students to intern during the Maryland legislative session with a Maryland delegate in Annapolis.
