Hayfever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis as it is known medically, affects one in five people and is mainly caused by allergens such as grass pollen. It is an allergic reaction to pollen and spores and often leads to the onset of irritating and uncomfortable symptoms. These symptoms can make you feel miserable and may affect your performance at work or school or impede leisure activities. You don’t have to put up with irritating symptoms. Cetrine is an extremely effective hayfever treatment and is available in packs of 30 tablets for only €9.99. It helps relieve symptoms of runny nose, eyes, itching and sneezing. Flixonase Allergy Relief Nasal Spray works by preventing the release of inflammatory chemicals which cause the symptoms of hayfever and is suitable for adults 18 years and over. It offers fast relief and relieves congestion, sneezing, runny nose as well as easing pressure around the eyes and nose. Prevalin nasal spray lines the inside of the nose, deactivating pollen and addresses all significant hayfever symptoms, including runny nose and itchy watery eyes, without side effects. It can be used from 6 years and up also has the advantage that it can be used by pregnant and breast feeding women.
Many people have allergy symptoms all year long, but their symptoms get worse during certain times of the year, e.g. spring and summer. Symptoms may be triggered by tree pollen, grasses or weeds. Indoor allergens can also be troublesome, e.g. dust mites, mold or pet hair. The worst days in Ireland for hayfever sufferers are hot, sunny days with light winds and no rain.
Opticrom eye drops are beneficial for those who suffer from swollen or itchy eyes. They can be used in conjunction with oral anti-histamine tablets.
Treatments There are many suitable products available over the counter. Antihistamines, nasal sprays, eye drops and decongestants can all provide relief from symptoms. Combinations of these products may be needed, but ideally anyone suffering from hayfever should ask their local Sam McCauley pharmacist or GP about the best treatment options for them and work out a treatment plan in advance of the high pollen season. Some medications may need to be started early in the season and continued until the season is over.

It is not possible to completely avoid allergens, but following some simple steps can limit your exposure to them and avoid triggers. Keep doors and windows closed during the pollen season. Avoid hanging laundry outside. Clothing you wear outside can carry the pollen throughout your home as you move from room to room. Change clothing where necessary. Pollen counts are highest in the early morning, try avoid going outside during this time. Avoid mowing the lawn, which stirs up pollen. Check weather updates daily pollen counts.
