But come September, we all wait for the inevitable note to arrive from school, informing us that there are cases of head lice in the classroom.

5 BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIPS #1 Let’s Drop The Judgement Head lice don’t prefer clean hair, or not-so-clean hair. They don’t pick and choose. They just want access to a warm scalp. Little kids are always touching heads and the lice simply crawl from one head to the next. Nearly every child will get them, at some stage of their school career. Nearly 20% of children have some level of infestation, at any one time. #2 Prevention is better than scratching There are a few great ways to stop the lice even getting onto your child’s head. Tie-up Long Hair Braids or buns or ponytails, even bandanas are super, if they’re allowed. Tea Tree Oil A quick dab of this behind the ears before school can prevent the head lice from catching hold. Aloe Vera and Jojoba Shampoo We can’t smell it but apparently lice hate the scent and tend to avoid it. #3 Comb, comb and comb some more! This is invaluable advice, whether your kids have head lice or not. Combing with a special nit comb, available from Sam McCauley Chemists, every week will really make a huge difference. Yes, it’s time-consuming and kids resist but it means you can spot a potential problem and stop it at an early stage. Put a little conditioner in the hair at
bath time. Be meticulous. Divide hair into sections and comb through each part. Wipe the comb on white tissue in between to identify nits, which are the eggs and look like black or brown specks, the size of a pinhead. Lice are about the size of a sesame seed. #4 Warning signs Check around the nape of your child’s neck and behind their ears for red patches or scratches. Lice often concentrate around these areas. Just because your child isn’t itching, doesn’t mean they don’t have them. It’s a builtup allergy to the lice that causes the itching. Early detection is crucial. Your mission is to get them gone before they multiply. #5 Treat and comb If you do find eggs, or lice, treat it as a project. A kind of creepy one, sure, but it’s best not to get totally freaked out in front of your children. In the UK they have started viewing head lice much like a common cold. Not brilliant but something to deal with and move on. Your Sam McCauley Chemist can recommend a good treatment shampoo or mousse. Please do not feel funny about asking us. This is a very everyday, every family event. Once you have followed the instructions and treated the hair, comb it through really, really thoroughly.
