Children’s Vitamins

Omega-3 fatty acids can play an important role in your child’s overall health, but recent research has also shown that only 22% of children get adequate amounts of these essential fatty acids. Children have the most to gain from these essential fats.

From prenatal babies to adolescents, children rely heavily on Omega-3’s for visual, brain and immune system development, and for normal emotional and cognitive function. Much of this has to do with the rapid growth of the brain in childhood.

Along with a healthy diet that includes fish and fresh green leafy vegetables, supplementing with a premium fish oil product is the best way to ensure that families begin to reverse this trend. There are several supplements which offer a healthy and convenient way for kids of all ages to supplement their diet with omega-3 fatty acids – just ask your local Sam McCauley Pharmacist.

Given a balanced diet, no child should need a vitamin supplement. However, children can be fussy eaters. If your child does not like vegetables, it’s a pragmatic approach to give them a one-a-day multivitamin. With so many supplements on the market these days, it is difficult to choose the right one, however all of the Sam McCauley Pharmacists and staff are fully trained to advise you on the best possible supplements for your infant or child. Below are two supplements that are worth considering for your child.

If your child does not drink milk or has a poor dairy intake it may be advisable to supplement their diet with a suitable Calcium supplement. If the body is not getting enough Calcium in the diet it takes Calcium from the bones which can weaken them over time.

CalciWise Kids to Teens is suitable for children over 4 years of age and provides more than the minimum recommended daily Calcium requirements in two Orange Soft Chews. Most of us get at least one cold a year and just occasionally we fall ill with flu. Both are viruses and cannot be treated with antibiotics. But we can ease the symptoms of colds and flu and any of the Sam McCauley Healthcare team can advise on the best products for your needs.

If you have a cold – and especially if you have flu – it’s important to do your best to avoid sneezing near other people.

Use fresh tissues each time you blow your nose and regularly wash your hands, so you don’t spread the virus.

A lot of people refer to their cold as flu – more often than not they simply have a bad cold. Even symptoms such as a sore throat, runny or blocked nose and headaches are unlikely by themselves to mean that you have flu – you may just have a nasty cold and should rest if possible. However, if you are running a temperature, or are suffering from more headaches or are experiencing bodily aches and pains, you may well have flu and should rest, at least until the fever has passed.

Your local Sam McCauley pharmacy has an extensive range of products to help relieve the symptoms of a cold or flu. In addition to taking a suitable cold or flu preparation you should ensure that you drink plenty of water, eat a wide variety of fruit and vegetables and if you can, try munching a clove of garlic every four to six hours. Garlic is famous for its ability to fight infection but if you cannot stomach the thought of that then why not try one of the many odourless garlic supplements available. If you are a poor eater then make sure that you are supplementing your diet with a Vitamin C preparation as this will also help recovery and get you back to normal.

Finally many of our pharmacies offer the Flu vaccination, so next year why not avail of this before the flu season starts.
