We have a huge number of patents and technical white papers to detail specific technologies that are unique to AudioQuest and we believe that all this together gives us the most comprehensive range of Audio and Video products of any performance-driven company. The founding principle behind AudioQuest was the same as it is today: “Do No Harm”. The perfect cable takes nothing away from the audio or video signal and

simply allows your equipment to work as best as it was designed to do. Cables aren’t magic, a cable can’t make something better it can only ever take something away. A well-made cable takes away less of the signal and allows you to enjoy more of your music or cinema. Studio Johns is one of the most reputed companies in the industry. Can you take our readers through your journey so far…?

Studio Johns, is a technology, engineering and lighting design company. It is co-founded by Sachin Bhargava and Pooja Bhargava. Sachin Bhargava, an electrical Engineer is the technology and engineering mind, whereas Pooja is a creative soul. She is a NIFT- Delhi graduate and Master in Lighting Design (Architectural Lighting & design Management) from Wismar, Germany.

We started the company in 2002. One day world renowned architect Dr Anoop Baratria called us in his office in 2016 and asked us, if we would be interested in lighting the world’s first heritage walkway in Amritsar. We, immediately grabbed the opportunity and there was on looking back.

Today, we boast an experienced team to ensure good design, better installations and best results.

Can you mention some of the

landmark projects you worked on, which have been a turning point in your career in terms of experimenting with new lighting techniques/designs or introducing innovative concepts?

In, 2016 we designed, supplied and commissioned the world’s longest heritage walkway- 1km heritage walk in Amritsar. It is from Town Hall to Jaliawalabagh to Darbar Sahab) Golden Temple.

In 2022, we designed and completed India’s first outdoor museum on ‘Constitution of India’ in the beautiful Pink City- Jaipur. In 2023, Architectural lighting of 3KM of world’s longest heritage riverfront on either side of Chambal Riverfront.

Both the public places projects have been ahead in terms of lighting and have been carefully lit up without the use of flood, making each facade low voltage consumption, darkness friendly, well-planned, and better installed

What are your views on the importance of Lighting Design in a project?

Lighting Design is a subject poorly implemented in India as the awareness is still low within communities and stakeholders. With LED’s becoming cheaper and powerful, we must stop the misuse of selection/over selection while choosing LED fixtures. Let’s not look at wattage but lumens output from a fixture while selecting.

Secondly, public places should not be flooded/over lit up. We are losing the night view of skies from the city because of over lighting. Not everything needs to be switched ON every day and every night hour. Automation should be used to plan the timings of these facades.

Thirdly, I feel there should be a guideline for lighting up the facades in the city. The facade belongs to the city. The city needs to have a theme ‘vision’. Lighting

designer should align their designs to the theme/vision of the city.

Every government project should have a lighting designer on board before executing a project.

What is the biggest innovation in the lighting sector? How has it revolutionized the entire industry?

Well, innovation is a continuous process. We see the changes every month in LEDs, allowing the fixtures to be super small yet powerful. There is a lot of growth in linear fixtures as they are futuristic design. Controls have become wireless and the entire package of lighting and control have a lot to offer in terms of innovative design.

As a Lighting Designer, which lighting control brands do you prefer?

So, for us each project and application have a futuristic, easy to use brand. For example, when we do-residences, we love to play with KNX using JUNG switches, wireless using CASAMBI. In case of large project installation like a public place we use Schneider/ABB for KNX, CASAMBI for wireless and MADRIX for DMX.

What are your views on the Smart lighting industry? According to you, in which sector (hospitality, commercial, residential), is traditional lighting getting rapidly replaced by smart lighting?

Smart lighting is the need of the hour. It finds usage in every sector, every application on every day basis. With power becoming expensive, sustainability becoming a challenge it is the need of the hour for government to act and Implement/mandate specifications for complete and holistic implementation of Smart Lighting Controls at least in public places in India.

If we have to live with “Ease of living” becoming a norm in India by 2047, there needs to be documents prepared, vision boards made by the government for SMART LIGHTNING.

For the second part of the question, larger spaces, bigger installations will always be more beneficial and viable financially if smart lighting is implemented.

Unfortunately, I don’t see much happening on the ground level as the tender are not prepared with guidelines in mind.

How do you foresee the Smart Lighting Industry 5 years down the line in India?

Five years down the line…

• The ‘Make in India’ initiatives will be present. There will be at least +30 more companies into manufacturing.

Complete manufacturing, including diffusers and chips will start within the country.

• Indian lighting standards, city vision documents/ guidelines would be laid out.

• BSR of government bodies will be more elaborate smart and sustainable in terms of specifications. Every electrical circuit will have some sort of automation.

• Applications will increase, light business will increase but quantitative installation per square feet will reduce and become meaningful.

Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is a futuristic trend in the lighting industry with health and mental wellness being the top benefits. What are your views on the same?

All living things responded to light in a different way. Human Centric Light will find application in most of the environment spaces working in 24 hours of day. I feel, it will enhance productivity and have better mental and health impact on living things.

However, controls, AI and overall space and location will also play an equal and dynamic role while designing futures spaces.

As the smart lighting market is fragmented into various segments – such as type, applications, end-users, and distribution channel, how does Studio Johns provide the best lighting solutions that suit consumer needs?

Unlike a lot of others, we are a team of engineers, First and designer Second. So, to say that our stress on

controls, drawings, implementation, commissioning is far more time-consuming because of a vast experience in controls, education in lighting design and a complete team to ensure end-to-end feel that our designs have far more impact than those who only design.

Our designs always have comprehensive technical parameters to match heritage, modern/ facade goals. Our team is well-trained with manufacturer’s design, files and renders.

I began with saying we are technology, engineering and lighting company. We are in continuous hunt and in huger to adopt technologies, use AI, Controls Media as to opt for designs out of the box to create, showcase mesmerising experiences.

So, we are leading and growing every year. We want to be recognised for meaningful designs. We love to add emotions and culture into installations. We want to design to have foot prints in every state of India and beyond.

Finally, we want to make an impact and contribution in the making of “Developed Bharat” ensuring and preserving our culture & heritage in the coming years. What we show as render is what we deliver.

The idea of showcasing, IOT and AI at the booth was to make people experience the power and usage of AI and understand futuristic concept. AI is a game changer and opens a pandora box to unlimited application and usage.

Future belongs to control and engineering, lighting will only be a product to be consumed in these applications. The mind-blowing application we display with immersiveness and instructiveness were a true delight to the user. And this is just, beginning…

As I said earlier lighting and controls go hand-in-hand. It’s like a marriage, good design smart system will only work if both lights and controls are smart and understand each other.

Although, I see a lot of crossing in this domain, these days, where light suppliers are also in control integration. So, both roles are equally important and are depending on each other.

Can you provide details on the range of audio products Q Acoustics intends to launch in India through its collaboration with MZ?

We have an exciting lineup of new introductions scheduled over the next few months, but at this stage, not all of the details are available to share so it will be a case of “watch this space” and look out for good news coming with a glimpse of what is coming on show at the High-End Show in Munich in May. We have just introduced the M40 which is our micro tower Bluetooth-powered system to go alongside our award-winning M20 unit. We have some exciting additions to our install range planned both with speakers and electronics, and we will be releasing more information on this as we head into summer. We also have some exciting news planned within our passive speaker range with more news to become available in the coming couple of months. Sorry I can’t be more specific, but we don’t want to ruin the surprise!

Could you elaborate on Q Acoustics’ lineup of wireless and powered speakers?

We launched the Q Active range back in 2020 and it was our first involvement with an active, streaming speaker and it was designed to be a completely networked-enabled home audio entertainment system. We followed this with the M20 which is an award-winning powered bookshelf model with Bluetooth connectivity that has achieved remarkable success since launch. We have recently launched the M20’s “big brother” the M40, in a micro tower format but with the notable inclusion of the C3 drivers that were introduced as part of our 5000 series range. The market response and reviews for M40 have “blown us away” to the extent that we sold everything we had within days of the first products arriving in our warehouse. 88

For home theatre setups, what combinations and permutations do you recommend for Indian households using Q Acoustics’ products?

A very difficult question to answer in a short sentence. Sound is such a subjective thing so what works for one customer may not suit another and budget plays a big part in any purchasing decision. In each of our range offerings we have several home theatre bundles that will provide an initial 5.1 channel set up which can then be expanded on should the customer desire and we now have a solution from the entrylevel budget at Q3000i to the high-end budget with Concept series. For those not wanting a complete 5.1 system, our ranges can be implemented in 2.1 format and there is also M20 and M40, which can further be

enhanced with a sub-woofer and offer an excellent alternative solution for those not wanting to invest in an AV receiver. I believe Q Acoustics offers a solution for every budget and format to enhance a theatre/TV viewing experience.

Which receiver or amplifier pairs best with Q Acoustics loudspeakers?

Again, a very difficult question to answer as everyone’s tastes are different. We work a lot in combination with Cambridge Audio and will be using their electronics at the upcoming High End Show in Munich. Our products have a reputation for offering a “neutral’ listing experience, as there is no discernible effect in bass or treble from the speakers themselves, so that is something that needs bearing in mind when selecting an electronics partner. From a multichannel perspective, I spent many years working with Denon and Marantz so have a fondness for those products and believe that they pair well with Q Acoustics.

Which streaming protocols is Q Acoustics compatible with, and how does it enhance the user experience in Indian homes?

Q Acoustics is always evaluating the popular music streaming services and protocols that could be used

with our products worldwide, to ensure a great user experience. The specific supported protocols and services will differ slightly from product to product, as they service different market sectors with varying customer expectations. We have products certified for Airplay 2, Google CAST, Bluetooth A2DP with AVRCP 1.5, Bluetooth aptX HD and Low Latency, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready and UPnP, and will be expanding this list of new products shortly. Popular music streaming services in India such as Spotify, Amazon Music and JioSaavn are all compatible with the supported protocols mentioned. Please tell us about your creative journey and the turning point in your creative journey.

My creative journey began around the age of 17, during my bachelor’s degree in commerce, when I became intrigued by the design world. It was then that I reached out to renowned architect Ashiesh Shah for a work opportunity, which became a pivotal turning point. Under his mentorship, I gained practical knowledge and learned the nuances of the field. Additionally, I pursued studies in Light Design and Visual Merchandising in Barcelona, offering insights into the reverse design visualisation process. This diverse exposure, alongside technical inputs from design school, has greatly expanded my knowledge and shaped my approach to design.

How has technology influenced your approach to designing Interior and architectural projects?

Technology has revolutionised the design process, allowing for greater efficiency and innovation. With tools like 3D rendering software and virtual reality, I can visualise and communicate design concepts more effectively. Additionally, advancements in materials and construction techniques have expanded the possibilities for creating sustainable and aesthetically pleasing spaces.

Can you elaborate on the role of home automation in your projects? How do they enhance the functionality and efficiency of your designs?

Home automation plays a crucial role in enhancing the functionality and efficiency of my designs. I can tailor the environment to meet my clients’ specific needs and preferences by integrating smart systems for lighting, climate control, security, and entertainment. These automated solutions add convenience and contribute to energy efficiency and cost savings over time. Imagine living in a home rooted in natural materials yet offering seamless integration with technology. Motorised jute blinds or even pre-selected music and light settings enhance the functionality and efficacy of a space.

What are the brands/companies you prefer when it comes to home automation?

When it comes to home automation, I prefer brands like Control4 and Lutron for their reliability, versatility, and seamless integration capabilities. These companies offer a wide range of products and solutions that can be customised to suit the unique requirements of each project, ensuring high performance and user satisfaction.

Have you encountered any challenges or limitations in incorporating Home Automation into your projects, and if so, how have you addressed them?

Incorporating home automation into projects can sometimes pose challenges, particularly in terms of compatibility issues and technical complexities. To

address these, I collaborate closely with experienced technology partners and conduct thorough testing and troubleshooting throughout the design and implementation process. Putting yourself in the client’s shoes and understanding this inhibition is essential. Then, provide use-case solutions that they can relate to. We can overcome obstacles and deliver exceptional client results by prioritising communication and problem-solving.

What are your views on opting for Building Automation in your projects? How has this significantly impacted the success of your architectural designs?

Building automation is a game-changer in architectural design, offering unprecedented control and efficiency in managing building systems and operations. By integrating automated HVAC, lighting, security, and maintenance solutions, we can optimise energy usage, improve occupant comfort, and streamline facility management processes. This holistic approach enhances buildings’ functionality and performance and contributes to long-term sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Can you share a case study where you have used Home Automation, Smart Technology and Smart Lighting?

We’ve leveraged home automation, smart technology, and intelligent lighting to redefine residential spaces. In a project exemplified by the Fawn Home, which is spread over an area of 1,400 sq. ft., we’ve ingeniously reconfigured a standard three-bedroom layout into a two-and-a-half-bedroom dwelling, seamlessly integrating automation features. Martin Logan continues to innovate in electrostatic and thin film transducer technology by investing in research and development, collaborating with experts in the field, and continuously refining their designs. They likely stay at the cutting edge by incorporating advancements in materials science, electronics, and signal processing, allowing them to push the boundaries of what’s possible in audio reproduction. Additionally, they may engage with feedback from customers and industry professionals to identify areas for improvement and new opportunities for innovation.

What sets Paradigm apart in terms of designing speaker components based on science and providing high-performance loudspeakers at competitive prices?

In the early 1980’s when co-founders Jerry VanderMarel and Scott Bagby decided to change the prevailing industry paradigm by building high-performance loudspeakers locally. They wanted to custom-design their speaker components based on science, not speculation. Their goal was to achieve a level of performance that would erase the speaker from the equation. Pure, lifelike audio, uninhibited by coloration, unrestrained in its ability to translate power into sound. And to do it at a price that would allow anyone to experience this magic.

To do it, Jerry and Scott gathered a team of dedicated audiophiles and engineers (and engineers who were audiophiles), and tapped into the detailed scientific findings from audio studies conducted by the National Research Council of Canada and from these humble beginnings, Paradigm was born.

From the start, a fundamental element of the Paradigm business plan was an intensive, ongoing program of research into the nature of sound and human hearing. Paradigm engineers worked with the National Research Council of Canada to determine and establish norms and standards backed by real science. (Standards set at the NRC were regularly exceeded once the research returned to the Paradigm labs!) In 1993, two leading NRC researchers joined Paradigm to open PARC, the

Paradigm Advanced Research Center, in Ottawa. PARC is a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to designing and programming electronics, software (including Digital Signal Processing and computer-aided design) and other advanced audio technologies. PARC became the home of “The Athena Project,” a super-secret scientific initiative to perfect “The Paradigm Sound”: low distortion, zero coloration, pure audio realism.

Even today, these design principles drive the product design team in Paradigm, which keeps pushing the bar higher and higher which can be seen in the achievements we have achieved over the years.

In the mid-90s, Paradigm unveiled its first powered subwoofer. The single-driver PS-1000, at just over 100 Watts RMS, packed such a punch that it convinced Paradigm engineers that powered subwoofers were the future. By the end of the 90s, models like the big Servo-15, powered by a custom-built high-current, low-distortion amplifier, were winning awards for thunderous musicality.

In 1996, Paradigm introduced the Reference Studio Series, a family of loudspeakers that set the stage in look and sound for the next generation of Paradigm speakers. With bolted faces prefiguring hip “steampunk” design, and smoothly curved enclosures, these speakers featured innovations like die-cast heat-sink driver chassis, shock-mount isolation chambers, advanced crossover networks, and furniture-grade finishes. Reference Studio Series reset the bar for accuracy, detail

and resolution.

In 2001, Paradigm brought its manufacturing home to one of the largest loudspeaker manufacturing facilities in North America: a colossal 225,000 square foot factory housing a massive computer-controlled, robot-assisted woodworking shop, hand assembly lines, advanced testing labs (including dual double-blind listening rooms), and automotive-quality finishing shops. Paradigm took complete control of its manufacturing process, from planning, tooling and prototyping, to driver and crossover assembly, and final enclosure wrapping and finishing. Paradigm became one of the largest driver manufacturers on the continent!

The Toronto factory also includes the largest privately owned anechoic chamber in North America. This astonishing audio testing facility is accessed by a delicate catwalk suspended inside a completely inert room-within-a-room measuring over 33,000 cubic feet, punctuated by large-scale foam stalactites. This quiet cave allowed Paradigm engineers to isolate audio anomalies, evaluate solutions, and perfectly tune

speakers and components to eliminate a speaker’s telltale signature or sound print. The science of tuning is perfected in the anechoic chamber, and critics and customers alike take notice as Paradigm loudspeaker performance becomes increasingly transparent.

What future developments can customers and enthusiasts expect from the Paradigm, Martin Logan and Anthem stable?

Leveraging 40 years of our design and engineering learnings and production capabilities, we would be venturing more and more into the world of true high-fi by launching products offering consistent, smooth, and controlled sound across the listening space delivering incredible performance while also reducing some of the harmful effects of room acoustics. We hope that these innovations will help to expand our reach to a wider audience. The Anthem MRX SLM and the Anthem MDX 12 which we will be bringing to India in the next couple of months would be a testimony to this.

Integration of Smart Home automation/technology

The client wanted the best smart home setup, keeping things simple and making sure everyone in the family, no matter their age, could easily use it. They also wanted it to be ready for the future and have cool features for their tech-savvy kids. Security was the biggest concern. They wanted everything to look unique and stay up-todate, the goal was to have a design that lasts a long time and always feels modern.

Creating a Heterogeneous Installation by Using a KNX IoT Router

In the fifth of this series of articles on KNX IoT, Bruno Johnson and Wouter van der Beek explain the role of the KNX IoT router.

Digital transformation has been one of the main strategy topics on company board meeting agendas for the last few years. The opportunity to develop digital services from cloud-based applications requires Internet protocol (IPv6) based network connections to edge devices that become the customer interface. Businesses of all shapes and sizes in commercial building automation have been asking for wireless IoT solutions to make this happen, and KNX Association responded by releasing KNX IoT Point API (KNX IoT).

What does the KNX IoT Router do?

The first issue is that there are different transports involved in a KNX system, namely KNX TP (Twisted Pair), KNXnet/IP (IPv4), KNX RF (Radio Frequency) and KNX IoT (IPv6). The KNX IoT router makes the connection between KNX IoT and other KNX transports.

The second issue is that although the KNX IoT subsystem is semantically equivalent to existing KNX systems, there is a need to convert run time communication. This includes the handling of KNX Secure and the KNX IoT security mechanisms. The

KNX IoT router handles both issues, by connecting to the existing IPv4 backbone and handling run time mechanisms for seamless interoperability.

Backbone IPv4

A backbone is part of a network which allows for connection between areas that contain areas (or subnets) of devices. The backbone in ETS is the IPv4 backbone. Using the IPv4 backbone, installers can combine products from hundreds of different manufacturers with guaranteed compatibility. Hence to be compatible with the existing installations, KNX IoT devices have their own subnets and connect to the IPv4 backbone. The KNX IoT Router is the device that connects the KNX IoT subnet with other KNX transport media of the system, such as KNX TP. An example of using IPv4 as a backbone is given in the following illustration:

If a KNX installation includes KNX IoT, the IPv4 backbone can also be used to transport the KNX IoT IPv6 message. This is possible because a network can transport IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously.

KNX IoT router

KNX routers are system components that convert KNX messages between KNX media. The KNX IoT router does this between KNXnet/IP and KNX IoT. The advantage of this approach is that is uses the existing KNX specifications and existing devices on the KNXnet/IP side. Hence the KNX IoT router only has to additionally specify how to convert between KNXnet/IP and KNX IoT. Although the KNX IoT router is a device, the main function is to convert incoming messages from KNXnet/IP to KNX IoT and the incoming messages from KNX IoT to KNXnet/IP. This is depicted in the following figure:

Without extra information one can’t convert data from the net/IP side, since the net/IP side only receives bits which are known, without context. This is overcome by supplying more information by the Management Client (MaC) to the KNX IoT router. There is a new table that contains the following information (per entry):

Group Address (as a list).

Data Type, the major number as defined in Datapoint Types, e.g., specifying Boolean, integer, float, etc.

Security for the group message for KNX Secure (e.g. the KNXnet/IP side).

Indication if authentication is applied. Indication if confidentially is applied.

Additional information to listen to the IPv4 communication is handled with a new functional block net/IP. The net/IP functional block contains the settings for: Which multicast address should be used.

The IPv4 backbone key.

Time to Live (TTL), e.g. how many routes a multicast message may pass until discarded.

The IPv4 routing latency tolerance.

The IPv4 sync latency fraction. This information means that a client has all the necessary information to send and receive net/IP S-mode messages.

The security and sending on the KNX IoT side are handled through the existing KNX IoT tables, as follows: The Auth/at Table to register the group keys.

The Recipient Table, e.g. which info to use for the outgoing communication to the KNX IoT side.

The Publisher Table, e.g. which info to use to listen to the incoming KNX IoT communication.

The Group Object Table, indicating which groups are used for sending and receiving.

Summary

By using a KNX IoT router, KNX IoT is completely interoperable with existing KNX infrastructure. Indeed a KNX IoT router can work with existing net/IP routers since it specifies the additional configuration parameters via KNX IoT. This means that a heterogeneous installation can run simultaneously over the same (IT) network, be it wired (Ethernet/PoE) or wireless (Thread / Wi-Fi / cellular), as well as existing KNX transport media. It also means that KNX tools, such as ETS 6, can configure all KNX infrastructure to interoperate, regardless of the transport medium.

JUNG Adds New Functions to LS TOUCH

The KNX room controller LS TOUCH received an extensive function update. An optimised menu structure with selectable operating levels also enables the control of hotel rooms, meeting rooms or offices. Different operating levels can be offered depending on the project type.

Control of Split Units

LS TOUCH now also controls split units. The setpoint temperature can be set individually, the operating mode can be switched and the fan speed can be adjusted. The internal controller can automatically switch a split unit On and Off for heating or cooling.

Labelling of Functions

It is now possible to label the functions at the favourites level. Depending on the space available, either the full name or an abbreviation is displayed. This makes it easier to assign the functions beyond the icons.

More Favourites Pages

Up to five Favourite pages with a maximum of four functions each can be created – by the system integrator via the parameterisation in the ETS or by the user in the settings on the device.

New icons in the favourites level show the statuses of the lighting and shading functions – with up to five different symbols per function. For example, the position of an external venetian blind can be seen immediately.

Display values

A measured value or a switching status can be displayed on the favourites page. This means that LS TOUCH can also be used as a display element for statuses in addition to a control point.

Changing the setpoint temperature

Depending on whether the device is used in residential or commercial areas, the corresponding ratio can be defined: It is possible to maintain or reset a setpoint temperature change after changing the operating mode.

Versatile Colour Selection

The LS TOUCH is permanently connected to a frame of the JUNG LS 990 or LS ZERO switch ranges and is available in various materials and colours. The unique real-me-tall variants of the ranges ideally match the design of LS TOUCH. LS ZERO enables flush installation. Both ranges are available in 63 Les Couleurs® Le Corbusier colours. The matching background colour is stored in the user interface for each frame colour.
