George Floyd, “I can’t breathe!” His words echoed around this Nation and world, provoking a national uprising against the pain and suffering inflicted upon the Black Nation in the United States of America. Bill of Rights: Amendment I Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly, Petition (1791) “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” (The Constitution of the United States, Bill of Rights, Amendment I, 1791, December). We are proud to be Americans. We, the people, are grieved with the government, the police, and the systematic racial disparities and inequalities in this Nation. We can’t breathe when the system in the United States of America allows for the many injustices against the Black Nation. We can’t jog without losing a black life; we can’t sit on a park bench or bird watch in America. We can’t breathe when we are targeted continuously. We can’t rise in economic and education stature with lurking biases. We redress the United States of America with our grievances. The outbreak of COVID-19 has created tremendous network loads, which lead to short-term malfunctions in some cases. Many network providers have been forced to handle the increase of traffic volumes by approximately thirty-three percent (33%). One of the solutions to this problem was to block high-definition video streams around the world. SignOnTheGo will use this opportunity to continue improving the next level of document security as the first layer of authentication.

I

n the 2019 Fall Edition of the Small Business Concierge Magazine, I wrote an article entitled “Is the Social Events Industry Recession Proof.” At the time, murmurs and grumblings were going on about the state of the economy. Depending on which expert you chose to listen to, something was on the horizon that could alter the business world’s course.

One might ask, “How do you shift the way you have been doing business to something new when you’ve lost customers and are struggling financially?” There is financial support out there, but you have to be diligent, persistent, and patient. Never did I imagine within a few short months of writing that article, the world would be in the middle of a pandemic known as COVID-19 and that it would abruptly disrupt the way we did everything. From going to work, shopping, traveling, socializing, religion, routine doctor appointments, and funerals; to the devastating blow to our economy and our wellbeing, we are experiencing is dubbed the “New Normal.” During these “economic downturns,” small businesses need to be laser-focused, honing in on their services or product offerings, ready to shift and adjust for the changing times. Today’s social norm is allowing me to ignite my creative talents in multiple ways, and I am excited. But do not think that I am ignorant of the struggle ahead. I am aware of the news reports stating that over 20.2 million individuals have lost their jobs in the services and hospitality industry (MSNBC). I have lost a significant amount of revenue due to event cancellations and offering full reimbursements to my clients. But now is not the time to give up. A plethora of resources is out there waiting and willing to help business owners during this time. While we are ‘sheltering-in-place,’ there are learning and mentoring opportunities from successful business owners and companies on how to survive this pandemic, but how


to come out more robust; more focused; superior products or services; a better business owner. Recently, I read a piece in a devotional book about Samuel Morse and how he dreamed of becoming a great painter. The book mentioned his father, Jedediah Morse, gave him advice to “Attend to one thing at a time. The steady, undissipated attention to one object is the sure mark of a superior genius”. So Samuel pursued becoming a great painter until disappointments, and a series of setbacks cause him to abandon his dream. Not forgetting his father’s advice, Samuel switched his focus and changed the world by inventing the telegraph and the language of Morse code. For the past several weeks, as this pandemic continues, I have decided to reevaluate my business model and identify and determine ways to shift for this ‘New Normal.’ And I can honestly say that I am overwhelmingly excited, optimistic, and expanding my service offerings. I am thinking outside the box and creating bright new ideas for my client’s

“stay-events.” My team and I are moving forward on a new events App we believe will enhance the future of the social events industry. Yes, as small business owners, we are up against new trials and challenges, but there are also new opportunities. Our creative spirit is more often released in our most challenging moments. It has been said that few great things are ever accomplished when we’re comfortable. And although we all desire to be comfortable, it is not our most productive moments. COVID-19 has brought all of us to uncomfortable moments. But in these moments, if we look hard enough, we can see new vistas and new opportunities to expand our dream of entrepreneurship and empower our future.

Hair Loss – The Impact On Women Today

Once I began to experience full-on menopause, in a matter of months my changing hormones lead to a noticeable amount of hair thinning from all over my head, it felt as though I lost half my hair strands in a short period, I was devastated, ashamed and scared. I suddenly became a statistic. I joined the 30 million other women in the United States who experience female pattern hair loss, alopecia, and struggle with thinning hair. Hair loss of some sort affects approximately 40% of women by the age of 50. As a licensed hairstylist, I feared that my clients would lose confidence in my ability to care for their hair or provide creditable advice to help maintain and grow their hair.

My experience with thinning hair caused me to study Trichology, which is the Para-medical science of hair loss and associated scalp problems. By integrating the clinical principles of scalp and hair health with hairstyling, I can reasonably assess the hair loss or growth issues and formulate comprehensive customized treatment protocols and hair growth regimens for clients. This spotlight provides the most current thinking about women’s hair loss and thinning in terms of the psychological impacts, primary causes, and treatments. Although it’s not a life-threatening condition, noticeable hair loss has a severe emotional impact on a woman’s self-esteem, body image, and self-confidence. It can also produce other psychological difficulties such as depression and less frequent and enjoyable social engagement. Hair loss for women can be so emotionally devastating that it can trigger diminished work performance, alter healthy living such as avoiding exercise or not treating other health conditions. 16 | Spring 2020 Extended

The bottom line is that society puts excessive pressure on women’s beauty, and a great deal of this comes from the perceptions of hair. For women, hair is the crown and glory, a symbol of beauty and pride. If this sense of beauty and pride starts to diminish, it can shatter a woman’s identity. The topic of women’s hair loss is quite complex, although there are nearly 30 different diagnosed conditions that cause hair loss in women, at the core of these conditions are two main culprits: inflammation and Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Pregnancy, menopause, stress, lack of sleep, medications, frequently wearing hairstyles that pull the hair too tight, and poor nutrition can all be catalysts for inflammation in the hair follicle, hormonal imbalances that can trigger inflammation in the hair follicles, disruption in the hair growth cycle, and the build-up of DHT that causes hair follicles to shrink. As a result, the hair stand grows thin and brittle.


Against popular belief, female hair loss and thinning is a treatable condition, and the treatment protocol depends on the underlying cause. Often merely addressing the health condition causing hair loss is enough to regrow the hair. Maintaining general health, which includes eating a well-balanced diet, getting at least 7-8 hours of restful sleep, drinking ample water, and taking at least 75 mg of vitamin C, can strengthen the hair. Also, consuming omega -3 fatty acids, which has anti-inflammatory properties, and adequate amounts of zinc can foster hair tissue growth and repair. Zink helps to keep the oil glands around the hair follicle working properly. Effective Hair Growth and Treatment Protocols May Include: Blue Light Therapy: disinfect the scalp by getting rid of bacteria and fungus. It’s also instrumental in detoxifying the scalp. Red Light Therapy: increase hair count, hair density, and hair thickness for men and women. All of these benefits come without any adverse or negative side effects.

Red Clover: a natural source of biological estrogens, integrating this herb into your diet, can help correct the hormone imbalance and prevent continuous hair loss. Basically, can you repeat that to achieve measurable success?

Whatever you commit to – should be straightforward and uncomplicated to scale up and out when ready. Did a competitor leave an opening to be exploited, a new hire that’s a Marketing ninja, a budget becomes available for next-level marketing; any of these circumstances can force a decision - in a direction, you should be ready to capitalize. Start marketing before you get the business license in your hand. Once you start – don’t let up. See *list above that your competitors can use to propel their marketing strategy for success. Every business should have a website or an online presence. But how do clients, suppliers, and even potential employees find out about you? Take the example of CHEWY.COM. A great idea to provide cheaper items to pet owners. How will those pet owners find your website? CHEWY.COM advertised on TV., an old school strategy and it has been continuous. The point is you might have a great business model, but who knows about it to make a difference to your bottom line? Learn what low tech, uncomplicated, and readily available method of marketing is available to you, and your immediate business goals choose that marketing method and stay consistent.

Defining oneself as a leader is a steady everchanging process.

What I mean, for example, is engaging in my MBA program at Capella University is enhancing my leadership acumen. In this business report, I will address how to define myself as a leader according to the guidelines provided for this business report assessment. (a) Analyze myself as a leader; (b) Develop a statement of who I am as a leader, based on my analysis; and (c) Explain how the live coaching experience that I had during this course can help me use my leadership strengths and best self to achieve my professional goals.

My analysis of me as a leader validated my core values that are final and fixed such as, being rooted in my religious beliefs, loving my family, loyalty, faithfulness, and dedication to encouraging others to be their best whole person. My contacts view of me as a leader aligns with my top five whole person strengths in BetterUp’s Whole Person report. The holistic leadership assessment activities and journey revealed the intricacies of my strengths in supporting goal-oriented teamwork, staying mindful of emotional regulation without weakening leadership authority, keeping an open mind to opportunities like BetterUp coaching, and out of balance work-life threatens my leadership achievement and performance.

My ability to focus on a project uninterrupted for hours is my preference. Flow is a strength that is easily adaptable to high-demand work projects. I use this method each day that I enter my office at the Alameda County Small Business Development Center (SBDC) as the director. I spend focused hours writing requests for proposal and grants, funding narratives, and program reporting use of federal and state funds.

Private U.S. Investigators: A Woman’s Role in a Male-Dominated Profession By: Judy Peterson I Kroot Private Investigation I https://www.pi-kroot.com

t could be argued that Sherlock Holmes is the best known private investigator of all time, even though he’s a fictional character created by mystery writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

investigator for the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. Before that, she was a corporate investigator for five years for Advanced Micro Devices.

The Holmes’ novels have entertained readers for well over a century, as the ponderous investigator follows baffling clues to reveal the identities of evil-doers. Holmes is known as a keen observer who often uses forensic science and logical reasoning to uncover the truth, attributes that serve real-life investigators equally as well. “It’s a gratifying profession because you’re helping people solve problems,” said Tracey Kroot from Kroot Private Investigations. “You can make a huge impact on peoples’ lives for the better.” Kroot is one of an estimated 33,000 licensed women private investigators in the U.S., according to Data USA. It also says there are over 40,000 licensed men in the field.

“It’s pretty awesome being a female in a male-dominated profession,” Kroot said. “I think we bring a different approach than men. We blend into the environment better, so we’re not scrutinized as much as men, which is critical to getting a good result. Recently, I was in a bar asking bartenders and managers about a former employee. I think they were comfortable talking to me because I’m a woman. A man might have been seen as a stalker or someone from law enforcement.”

She also holds an Advanced POST Certificate from the state of California, having completed the specialized investigator academy for the Peace Officers Standards and Training. Kroot founded her all women, San Josebased investigation firm in 2015. “Back in the day, I dealt with a lot of children, elder, and domestic abuse cases,” Kroot said. “These can be extremely-sensitive and personal conversations, and I think women are better equipped to have them because

Today, Kroot focuses on family law and child support cases. She’s also hired to conduct witness interviews for criminal defense attorneys


and civil litigators and performs background checks that are known in P.I., lingo as “skip tracing.” She recently conducted an asset search on behalf of an attorney whose elderly female client had “lost” $250,000. “I searched the woman’s house, but couldn’t find any documents relating to the $250,000,” Kroot said. “I did find keys to two safety deposit boxes, so the attorney and I picked up our client and took her to the bank. We found $25,000 in cash in the boxes and the original cashier’s checks for the money. But the checks were expired, and the bank had no record of them because they were more than seven years old.”

Most banks don’t keep records past seven years. In the case of our elderly woman, the bank did try to track her down and, at some point, re-issued new checks. “But a woman by the same name in Georgia had cashed them,” Kroot said. “The FBI got involved, and the bank had to make my client whole to the tune of $250,000.” Kroot isn’t particularly fond of stake-outs because “they’re boring,” but those sometimes come into play, depending on a client’s needs. She avoids cases she thinks might put her in danger, choosing to leave those to her male counterparts. “Most of my clients are attorneys or have been referred by an attorney. So that provides an extra element of security because they’ve been pre-screened,” Kroot said. Social media is a tool she frequently uses to uncover secrets people don’t want to be exposed. Other computer-based tools are rigorously regulated by the state of California, which tests and licenses private investigators after they’ve completed three years of intensive on-the-job training. Interest in the blockchain technology is growing and may soon become ubiquitous. The G7 (the world’s leading economic countries, which are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) are all exploring the use of blockchain for use in their stock markets.1 Both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank have launched a private blockchain to fully understand the technology. Blockchain enhances the integrity and trustworthiness of business transactions.2 Blockchain can prevent the violation of trust and vulnerability of innocent consumers and organizations. Blockchain is cryptographically secure, and experts are forecasting; it will affect trillions of US dollars to the global economy. We now live in the 4th Industrial Revolution. With AI, swarm robotics, machine learning, the Internet of Things, in these backgrounds, blockchain will coordinate the platforms that adversaries would use to compromise security and privacy. Currently, AI and blockchain are the most disruptive technologies that are being exploited on the planet.

AI and blockchain are destined to alter our lives, work, and how we interact. Blockchain is the power behind a serverless Internet and decentralized web where users will control their data. For instance, in the healthcare industry, patients will have the power and ability to monitor who uses their data and to obtain data copyrights. Blockchain technologists and subject matter experts are working on solutions that will tie together untrusting devices. Such as cell phones, the Internet of Things, and swarm robotics, so consensus will be possible in key decision-making cases such as when to update the software on a dishwasher. Blockchain can be described as an example of triple entry accounting. Each participating member of the blockchain will possess its own transaction records. The blockchain would contain the third record of each transaction. For each transaction, there is a private record for both the sender and receiver and a third recorded to the blockchain. Also, blockchain allows for easier auditing and reconciliation of transactions, and automation of auditing processes, by having all transactions in one place. The future is bright for blockchain, but also for those who dare to pursue Fourth Industrial Revolution opportunities. Blockchain has proven itself as a robust storage, information tracking, and transaction tool. Harnessing the power of blockchain to ensure that everyone’s rights are protected while simultaneously ensuring inclusion, safety, interoperability, and scale will deliver massive positive outcomes.

Healthy Mom 101: Stay-at-Home Cozy Cooking Chicken and Dumplings By: Chef Tisha Wylie Jeffers I Tisha’s Table I www.tishastable.com 1 whole chicken, poached and meat removed and hand shredded, reserve liquid for later 2 carrots, diced 1 large onion, diced 2 Tbsp. Canola oil or olive oil 2 Tbsp. flour

1 bunch of fresh thyme A couple of bay leaves 1 Tbsp. chicken base Salt and pepper to taste 1 can of evaporated milk or heavy cream 1 batch of dumpling batter (recipe follows)

In a large pot, add oil, diced carrot, and onion and cook for a few moments. Add flour to coat the vegetables and continue to cook for another 3 minutes. Slowly add the liquid from the poached chicken (about 6 cups) Stir in the chicken base, and add in salt and pepper to taste. Give it a taste to check seasoning – add the thyme and bay leaves. Bring to a simmer and carefully drop dumpling batter in the liquid 1 tablespoon at a time. Cover and cook for about 10- 15 minutes or until the dumplings float to the top and are cooked all the way through. Stir in the cooked shredded chicken, stir in the milk and serve.

Dumpling Batter: 1 1/3 cup of Flour 2 teaspoons baking powder

Pinch of salt and pepper 2/3 cup of milk Chopped fresh Italian parsley

f current predictors are an indication of a looming economic recession, it is definitely, time for Small Business Owners in the Social Events Industry to pay close attention. The National Bureau of Economic Research defines a recession as “a period of falling economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months.” Although a recession can be a stressful time for businesses and consumers, I am better prepared this time around should it come to fruition and ready to make the most out of the opportunities it can bring. During a recession, consumers in the Social Events Market are:  More guarded on how they spend their money;  Searching for a good value  Looking for original and unique ideas When consumers feel unsure about the economy, they tend to spend less but have higher expectations. This can be an excellent opportunity for Event Planning Industry Professionals to shine in a variety of ways that can secure lifelong clients and secure, if not boost, your company’s bottom line. 1. Spend the Client’s Money Wisely a. Select “off-season” dates for the event – The most popular months for a wedding are May through October. A January or November wedding can save a lot on the purse strings (minus holiday weekends). b. Opt for a “non-traditional” day of the week - Most celebratory events take place on a Friday or Saturday, but venues offer reduced rates for every other day of the week that can save your client substantially. If you plan your “off-day” event far in advance, guests will usually make adjustments to be in attendance. c. Reality checks. Keep your client’s expectations in check with their budget. With all of the glitz and glamour photographs splashed across social media, it’s easy to get carried away in the excitement. It is essential to keep a close eye on what is and isn’t possible to stay on track with the budget.

2. Quality over Quantity a. I’m sure almost everyone has heard the quote “Less is more” by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, and in this industry, it is a quote that should always be in the back of a planner’s mind. Serving five mouthwatering appetizers far outweighs serving eight to ten mediocre ones. And the catering costs can be significantly lowered. It’s less expensive for the chef to produce 300 of the same food product than 100 each of 3 products. b. Premium beverages. Providing a hosted bar of premium beverages can become very expensive. Instead, offer guests one or two popular specialty drinks, quality wine, and beer. Despite popular thinking, most people are less as much a connoisseur of alcohol as one would believe. c. Do you need to invite 250 people? Hosting Social events should be for family and friends who are genuinely a part of your life. Inviting people for the sake of asking them is

undoubtedly a way of spending additional funds. Unless you’re hosting a fundraiser, include only those people who add value to your life before, and will continue to do so, after your affair.

3. Affordable Luxury a. If flowers are going to be a part of your décor, knowing what flowers are in season will provide cost savings. Centerpieces flowing with beautiful Dendrobium or Phalaenopsis orchids will be more affordable during the spring versus other seasons and will elevate your event. b. Your modest leadership demeanor is noticeably powerful. Humility is said to be the chief characteristic of a Level V leader. How does it feel to be a Level V leader? Answer Dr. Browning:

My understanding of a Level V leader is that it believes in the purpose of the organization they’re trying to lead. For me, it’s easy to lead in education because the bottom-line for education is helping and improving people and society. It isn’t difficult. Believing in education as much as I do, it has been a pleasure. It hasn’t been a challenge to be totally and completely committed to that bottom-line. I think the humility comes from not out promoting yourself. But being out to promote what you believe in or your organization is the element that goes into being a leader for me. Question SBCM:

Your determination to lead and to achieve something higher than yourself appears evident throughout your career in education. What is that driving force?

It’s knowing how valuable education is, especially to the individual. Community colleges are a vehicle for providing access to everyone to education. So for me, it’s been a lifelong commitment. It’s been something since very early on; I was very passionate about it because I knew how much it could change lives. It changes your whole way of thinking. It’s not just your economics. It’s it’s everything. It’s how you see your life, how you raise your children, how you impact the world. And everybody should have that opportunity. Question SBCM:

I have a side question; it’s not one of the questions on my sheet here. I wasn’t sure how to collect my thoughts to ask the question? And I’m not sure that I’m going to do a good job at it right now? I saw a picture of you, and it looked like it was years ago, maybe when you first started as Ohlone Community College president? That picture had a lot to say. And I was looking at you now, and I saw something in your presence and demeanor that as you answered this question, it made me think about that picture and that you believe in education. And the opportunity of education for everyone, every race, gender. Ohlone is known for its diversity. And I have to think that maybe you brought that torch into Ohlone? You carry something different. I can’t put my finger on it. Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

When it comes to that, I was lucky. Life-changing experiences when I was young that put me on this path. I was able to observe some young people who were very committed to education but did not have a good opportunity to move forward. And it made me feel like I had to follow that cause I’m not a cause person. But that grabbed me and never let me go. At that point, it was about diverse students and diverse kids. And Ohlone, I don’t want to take credit for making Ohlone diverse or saying that I brought that value to the college. I didn’t. It was there. It pulled me, and it gave me that opportunity to make it even more robust. But I will tell you when I started at the college, the motto for the college was a world of cultures united in learning.

Question SBCM:

What advice would you give to young women starting in their careers? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

You know, that’s a good question. And it made me pause and think about it. I would pass along the advice that I was given. And that was you can do anything. You have to firmly-believe you can do anything, and you have to take it a bit further and say, I’m so positive that I can do anything that I’m going to take some risk. I’m not going to stick with that safe job that isn’t pulling me, attracting me, or drawing me. You have to be able to believe in yourself to the point where you will say; I’ll bet on myself. I believe that I can accomplish anything, and I have to take steps to get there. So early on, I left a tenured faculty position to go to a job that wasn’t even in the retirement system, and it was a good step for me to do. It helped me move forward in my career and gave me a broad perspective on community college. But it took some courage to do that. And it took, believing that I could really do something. I took a chance. Question SBCM:

On that note, and this is another side question, based on how you answered. Those who don’t take that extra step and that risk what kind of loss do you think might be there? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

Well, they will probably always wonder and wish, and they may feel like, I lost my vision. I lost my opportunity to grow and be something I could be? I don’t know. It’s different for everybody. Probably people may say, OK, well, I missed that opportunity, but I got a different opportunity. It is hard to say and make that claim for everybody. But I think that there is the possibility of regret. Question SBCM:

women in education because of your achievements throughout your career? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

Being the first female president at Ohlone, gave me the chance to maybe open some people’s eyes about a different leadership style. I would say the community, perhaps the people, the college community, the internal community at the college. I think that my style was, very, different. I think it may have got some people thinking about women leaders in general. And what those stylistic things mean and how they translate into helping the college move forward. Question SBCM:

Ohlone Community College is one of your grandest legacies, as its president, what are you most proud of accomplishing? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

Well, you know, most people would probably assume it’s all those buildings, and they’re fantastic, but I think really.


I am most satisfied and proud of having a hand in shining a light on what a great college Ohlone is and all the now-noted accomplishments. When I started and even now to some extent, but a much lesser extent, people will say, oh, it’s the hidden gem, or it’s the Bay Area’s best-kept secret. I tried very hard to overcome that because it shouldn’t be a secret. Right. I worked hard to bring out all the wonderful things that the faculty, staff, and the students accomplish at that college. And I think I’ve succeeded a little bit (with a soft, warm chuckle) at least somewhat. Question SBCM:

What is the secret sauce to your success? Did you set out to be a college president? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

No, I didn’t. Never would have thought that. I think throughout my career, I kind of went to where I thought I could help or where I thought I could make a difference, make the biggest difference. I was a faculty member early in my career. I mentioned that, and I’d been on several statewide committees. I taught statistics at the university at the grad level. And there was a research position that opened. I thought, if I were in that position, then I could have an impact on the students coming in and what sort of tests they have to take and whether those tests were good predictors, whether they were valid. And I could see if I did this, I’d have an opportunity to impact and help more students. So that’s kind of my driving force. I mentioned that I went from a tenured position in college I’d been at for 18 years. And I left, and I went to the accrediting commission because I thought, I can have a broader impact. I can help more people in that position. So that’s sort of been my driving force. I don’t know if I would call it secret sauce, but certainly, that’s what motivated me. Question SBCM:

Why are you passionate about diversity, English as a Second Language (ESL) students from other languages to thrive in their educational careers? Based on some of the research I did, I know that you’re fluent in Spanish. And there’s a reason for people learning other languages. There seems to be some sort of tie there, underlining something there that maybe we don’t know about, what is that? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

I had a passion for language in people from other cultures that I don’t know how far I can figure out where it started. But I remember starting to learn Spanish when I was about 14 and having an opportunity to be the guide for people who were coming in and didn’t know any English. Not that I knew much Spanish, but I wanted to do it. And I got the opportunity. Becoming aware of the situation of second language learners was life-changing and focused me on ESL. I was a Spanish major in college, and I was looking for a part-time job. And the career center said, oh, well, we’ve got a great job for you, you know, Spanish. Therefore, you can teach English to people who don’t know it. And I thought I can? I had no background, no knowledge, no education in it at all. But I did take it as a job working with students in an after-school program, like five or six students, to try to help them learn English. And after about three weeks, I had a different group of five or six students. I

went to the director, and I said, why? What happened to the students that I started in the class? And she said, well after they’re in the program for a few weeks, they’re tested. And I said, what does that mean? She said, we give them a test, and we place them according to their scores. And all of your students placed in the educable but mentally retarded school. And I said, well, how is that? One of those kids wanted to be a doctor; they were bright kids. She said, well, they tested in English. That was it. I mean, that was, for me, a huge turning point in my career. It was very powerful. I know that still happens right now, and for eons, kids were prohibited from speaking their language on-campus and were punished if they were speaking Spanish. That’s what caused me to be passionate. Question SBCM:

Twelve years as President of Ohlone Community College in Silicon Valley, the technology capital of the world, the technology destination for students and professionals, is there higher stress to meet the world’s expectation of being a Silicon Valley college? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

The beauty of the community college system is that word community is what it means; you are serving the needs of your community. You shape your college to serve that community. And for a Silicon Valley community college, there are certain values and expectations that the community has. They expect to be able to send their high school students to


college. They expect the students who do come to the college to transfer to high-level universities and do well once they transfer. They expect the career and technical programs to be focused on technology in health, science, and those kinds of areas. The expectations and stresses are well-matched to the community and the community’s desires and needs. So, yes, I think there is an expectation about being in Silicon Valley, and that’s what you deliver. And the other expectation is that you stay connected or you become connected with the community. So you know what it is they’re after. I think that I did that. I set up a president’s advisory committee and met quarterly with all of the community leaders and set up a mechanism whereby they can give us feedback. Then the next time I met with them, I’d say, here’s what we did with your feedback, and then I’d give them a new topic to give us advice on. And that that started about five years ago and it’s still going on. Question SBCM:

What are your final words of encouragement to the Ohlone Community College students? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

Right now, we’re in an unknown situation. It may be easier for students to lose their momentum in their steam, in their hope in this situation, because it is unknown. What I would tell them is, you know, you control your destination. You need to look forward and not get stuck in this situation. You have plans. You need to focus on

those plans and carry forward with those plans. And then in focusing on the future, it will get you to the future, and the future will be, as you said at the outset. We’ll get through this.

What is what does retirement for you? How are you defining that? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

I have many projects I want to address. I’d love to be able to travel more. We’ll see how that develops? I would love to do some consulting. I would like to work for the accrediting commission, perhaps as a commissioner someday. So there are things that I would like to continue. I would like to be involved in the community more than I have been able to, so lots of aspirations left. Question SBCM:

What would you hope a person would say about your educational legacy? Answer Dr. Gari Browning:

That I moved the college forward on many fronts. It’s great to have been able to be involved in providing a great learning environment for the students. Seeing those students walking around in those new buildings on that new campus and having them say, oh, this is wonderful. It is a fantastic learning environment; it is so satisfying and rewarding. I didn’t get to spend too much time in that new office, but I had a really good venue; I could watch the students interacting throughout all the buildings. And it was very rewarding. The one thing that I hope people remember and attribute to me is the focus on diversity and inclusion. I am not responsible for the diversity at Ohlone, and that value. I said that before. But I think a lot that we’ve been able to do has made that something we’re known for in Silicon Valley. Ohlone is known for its diversity and how it welcomes people from diverse backgrounds. Ohlone works hard to enhance the cultural knowledge and appreciation of everybody, of students, of staff, of the faculty. We put a lot of effort into it continuously. And I think that has made a big difference. SBCM: We wish you the best in your next power woman venture.

I think it’s empowering for children to see their mothers in a work environment and BOSS mode.

Find time in all the busyness to stop. Stop and take in your children's voices. Ask them questions and watch them light up to have a conversation with you. Ask them about their day and give your undivided attention as they pour over their day. The small 15-30 min convo means so much more to them than you think. I see the look on my daughters face when I shut out everything and everyone else. It makes them so proud to be the main focus of my attention when so many outside things fight for my time. Find time to crawl into bed and sleep with your kids sometimes and let them know they're never too old for a cuddle. 2. Not every task will get done, and it's OK.

Permission to not be 100% in everything that's on your plate. Sometimes I wish I had more time in the day to finish the several loads of laundry that are piling up or keep the house spotless — continually cleaning up after two rambunctious girls is tiring! But I'd rather see them make a mess from their toys utilizing their imagination than sit with an electronic device and veg out all day. I want to think that I'm a superwoman, but let me be real; I can't do it all. Stress was eating me alive all because I wanted to have everything perfect. Whatever can't get done in those 24 hours, can wait until the next day! 3. Invite your children into your business world. I found that my girls appreciate going to the office with me and look forward to being my "assistant" when viewing homes. I think it's empowering for children to see their mothers in a work environment and BOSS mode. My clients have all been fantastic, and my girls learn to behave around adults and conduct themselves around professional environments. I want my girls to see that mom has different sides to her, and they can all be complimentary. I'm leaving a legacy, and I want them to see that mom's hard work has left them something that can be carried on for generations.

Zen is a word that is elusive in its ability to be succintly understood and its benefits. Zen is enlightenment through the most direct possible methods. Society’s workplace is in desperate need of this thing that we call Zen. There is a painful aching need for peace within. Peace is a powerful, organic force desired by everyone, and it is the foundation needed to create success, joy, and love. What is true inner peace? Can it be attained, and by what means?

Stress and anxiety levels have reached alarming proportions and continue to rise. Over 40 million adults suffer from unmanageable stress levels, and there’s no indication with the way things are going, that what’s on the horizon communicates any real remedy. In the past five years, stress levels have increased. The hard question to ask is, ‘Why?’ High levels affect individuals and entire organizations alike. Should the focus be on reducing stress and anxiety or on the prevention of them? Both.

Humans have four (basic) qualities; physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. A balanced human being has fluctuating but equal levels in these four qualities. An unbalanced human being is grossly out of alignment in more than one quality, if not in all at the same time. It’s not difficult to see that dealing with high levels of stress can 72 | Spring 2020 Extended

and often trigger new additional waves of anger, grief, guilt, low self-esteem, and fear, which in turn snowballs into more significant amounts of stress.

It is essential to access a service that addresses both acute and chronic challenges, to help right now and at the moment. Gradually, the basics evolve into a positive forward momentum that is noticeable, palpable, like being able to hit the ‘reset’ button for your life but in real-time. My coaching specializes in bringing a complex field of study and practice directly to you in a variety of offerings to best serve individuals and organizations collectively. You wouldn’t put a simple bandaid on an ulcer, much like you wouldn’t put a coat of paint on a cracked foundation, pretending it’s going to help. People react and handle stress in different ways, and unfortunately, more times than not, the outcome is not good and is harmful and hurtful to themselves and others. Every moment of your life, you have many choices. How will you begin to choose differently so that a brand new outcome will result?

There is a direct correlation to nature and our four basic human qualities; physical relates to the earth, emotional relates to fire, mental relates to water, and spiritual to air. In my practice, I help by first clearing away the multiple layers of clutter by directing my clients


to the simplicity and beauty of each moment; within themselves and through nature. When you take a deep breath, slow down, and allow yourself to consider there is no “Oops” in nature, how can there be an “Oops” in you? Don’t waste your time or energy on things that are out of your control. It leads to higher levels of fear and frustration. 2. Take a step back to think about the big Why? Keep your motivational juices flowing by staying positive! Look for new opportunities amid this challenge. Think outside of the box. Positive thinking creates positive feelings and stimulates creative ideas. If your goal is to restructure your business to make adjustments for the changes needed as a result of COVID-19, work with your team to brainstorm creative ideas, and act on them. It’s common for motivation to follow positive thinking and action. Once you take the first step, you’ll feel motivated to keep moving. 5. Start visualizing your success. By visualizing a successful business, despite the COVID-19 challenges, you bring your future into the present. As you visualize your business and all the benefits it will bring, you’ll feel your motivation begin to skyrocket.


6. Achieving goals using small manageable steps. You’ll start to procrastinate and potentially even give up prematurely if the path looks too challenging. Therefore, break up your big goals into small achievable steps. It will prevent you from becoming overwhelmed by all of the new COVID-19 mandates, so take it one step at a time. 7. Daily Affirmations will keep you positive. Affirmations help you believe that you’re going to achieve your goal. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or low on motivation, saying things like, “My business is thriving, despite the COVID-19 challenges” can help you stay encouraged and inspired. 8. Associate with individuals who will encourage you. Boost your motivation is to surround yourself with other motivated people. While you are making adjustments in your business, spend time with other passionate entrepreneurs who are successfully overcoming the COVID-19 challenges. They will encourage you to keep moving forward. These ideas may be simple, but they’re profound. e have all faced our fears at some point in our lives. Did you have a fear of flying? When your best friends’ wedding was an event you could not miss, you somehow overcame your fear and made it to the celebrated event. The fear of public speaking, fear of speaking up in a crowd, afraid of receiving public ridicule or negative judgment, but after doing so, many in the crowd came up to you and thanked you for your courage. By doing so and trusting your gut, now each of them feels more confident to engage and participate. Was your fear of asking someone for forgiveness or telling someone you loved them, for fear of being rejected? We have shared experiences of overcoming our fear or not. We share this in common as individuals and as a global collective across all ages, races, genders, cultures, and economic status. Now, in the face of a global virus pandemic that affects everyone in one way or another, it can certainly feel as though fear has won. It may feel as though fear has brutally

extinguished the light of faith, hope, and love in everything. Let’s stop. It’s time to re-focus. Now is the time to truly wake up. There has never been a time like this on the planet precisely like this. Humanity has endured tragedy, loss, massive change, severe conditions, and brutality, and yet there has always been one common thread to overcoming adversity. That unbreakable, unshakeable, ever-resistant, and timeless thing? Love. The pandemic is forcing us to slow down, dial back our hyper-space paced life; we are experiencing perhaps for far too long. A silence. For some, this silence is making their skin crawl. It’s bringing up a mirror from which to turn inward upon themselves, and many are not wanting to face what they see. You want to run away, but everything that has helped you keep running for all this time is taken away. Now what? A few things to consider,


1. What is your reflection? 2. What have you stuffed in the recesses of your heart and mind? 3. What must you face and work on during this time? Pace and stillness make us enter into the silence. The practice of doing nothing is powerful and compelling. Deeper silence at first creates discomfort; it is like a stranger that enters our personal space without attention or respect for boundaries. Profound silence is where the magic lies to create what you desire and quiet the noise of life.

Collections: If you pay a collection account, it will drop your credit score. If you want to pay a collection account that is currently on your credit report, it will drop your credit score because it makes the date of activity current. It is best to ask the collection company if they will stop reporting to the bureaus if you agree to pay the bill. It does not make a difference on the FICO score if you settle the account versus paying the bill in full. If there are collection accounts to settle, do not let a mortgage credit be run. Experian has a program where they notify the collection companies if your credit has been run. If you run a mortgage credit report before you settle the collection, you will not get a good deal to settle. They know you want to purchase a home and in order to do that, you need to pay the collection. Settle a collection at the end of the month, so you will get a better settlement. Collection companies have quotas they need to meet, and if you wait until the end of the month, you will pay less for the debt. If you have a collection company calling, tell them “do not contact me by phone” if they continue, you can sue them. If you have a robot calling your cell phone, that is an automatic reason to sue them also. If you have one or more accounts to settle, do not let a mortgage credit be run. Amount of Tradelines you should have: You should have four accounts in good standing to optimize credit score. It is best to have a home loan, car loan, and two credit cards. home loan or a car loan, you should have four credit cards. Student loans, if not in deferment count as one of the four trade lines active on your credit report. Credit Card Balances: It is important to keep your credit card balances under 30% of its limit (15% is even better). If you keep your balance under 30% of the credit limit, you will receive 5 points to your FICO score, If you keep your balance under 15% of the credit limit, you will receive 15 points to your FICO score. Once you go over 50% of the credit limit, it will drop your score 18 points (per credit card).

If you have a collection company calling, tell them “do not contact me by phone” if they continue, you can sue them.


Inquiries: 5-9 inquiries in a two-year period will drop your score 20 points. Don’t let anyone run your credit. You can run your credit on the free websites, show that report to the person you are applying for credit and see if they can do the deal. If they can, then allow them to run your report through their company. Don’t close credit cards: Once you have eight years worth of credit history on your credit report, you get 40 points added to your FICO score. So don’t close credit cards. If you want to do a “transfer balance” to another credit card, that is ok, don’t close the credit card you moved the balance from. Don’t let the creditor close your account. Use your credit card once every 4 to 6 months, then pay off the balance. Authorized User: The authorized user still works today. Example: Mom has great credit, and she wants to help out her son. She can add him as an authorized user on her credit card, Mom’s great credit will go on the son’s report, son’s bad credit will not hop on Mom’s credit report. The authorized user works for car loans and credit cards. If you want to open a home mortgage, you need to have your own credit established. Types of Credit Cards: If you only have major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and American Express), you will get 16 points added to your FICO score. If you add a department store card to your credit, you will then have 27 points added to your FICO score. Bank Accounts: If you have a checking account, it will give you 5 points added to your FICO score, savings account gives you 10 points, if you have both, it will give you 20 points added to your FICO score. What is the California Department of General Services (DGS)? DGS is the business manager for the state of California, providing procurement and business solutions for state agencies, local agencies, resource partners, and external customers. Each year, the state purchases 8 to 10 billion dollars’ worth of goods, information technology, construction projects, and professional services. As the business manager for the state, DGS oversees much of this acquisition activity through its regulations, policies, and programs.

Getting certified with DGS increases business opportunities DGS encourages small businesses and businesses owned and operated by disabled veterans to register and become certified to do business with the state. The Small Business (SB) and Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise (DVBE) certification programs provide these groups with bidding preference and contracting opportunities. State departments are required to contract 25 percent of their annual spending with certified SBs and 3 percent with certified DVBEs. Getting certified helps SBs and DVBEs compete for state contracts on a more level playing field with larger firms, promoting competition, and supporting California’s entrepreneur and veteran communities. In January 2019, a new SB certification – Small Business for the Purpose of Public Works (SB-PW) – took effect for state public works contracts and projects, supplementing the existing SB certification. The new SB-PW certification expands opportunities to participate in public works projects as a certified small business to firms that are relatively small in the public works arena but are larger than allowed by the SB certification limits. Under the new SB-PW certification, firms with average gross annual revenues of $15 million to $36 million, or with 100-200 employees, can receive certification as a Small Business for the purpose of public works contracts. State certification also opens doors to doing business with cities, counties, and organizations that have programs requiring them to award some percentage of their business or give preference to state-certified SBs and DVBEs. The DGS Outreach team serves the SB and DVBE communities by assisting businesses with certification and access to procurement opportunities through outreach and training. The Outreach Team works with diverse groups of business organizations and attends outreach events, participates in interactive panels, exhibits at events, provides workshops on certification and doing business with the state, and provides one-on-one advice to assist suppliers with the state’s procurement process. Some businesspeople view insurance like taxes a chore to get through costing money and required by others for compliance. Business insurance is too important and costly, so having this basic knowledge can save your business money while facilitating growth. Business Owner Policy (BOP) is a popular package combining Commercial General Liability (CGL) and Property Insurance. It may include Liability, Business Personal Property (computers, inventory, furniture), Lessor Coverage (required by landlords from tenants), Tenant Improvements, Cyber, Employment Practices, Business Interruption, and Additional Insureds. Most BOPs focus on a particular business risk category - a real estate office faces different risks than a restaurant, and their BOP should reflect that uniqueness. Basic coverages and deductibles can be adjusted. Since each carrier has a BOP version and preferred target customers, always ask if your business fits into their particular “appetite.� If not, you may be misplaced generically as Not Otherwise Classified (NOC), priced higher to discourage you, or even declined to quote. When adding special coverages, they are called Endorsements. Certificates of Insurance validate policyholder coverage to landlords and clients, sometimes at no cost, depending on policy/carrier/agency. Professional Liability (PL), also referred to as Errors & Omissions (E&O) or Medical Malpractice, is not included in BOPs. PL is 84 | Spring 2020 Extended

imperative if you provide a professional service or routinely give advice to clients. For home-based businesses (webmaster), PL may be sufficient for their needs without a BOP. Both PL and BOP are imperative for accounting or medical offices. Commercial Umbrella adds higher limits over several coverages. It can be a strategic way to increase overall coverage while saving over increased coverage on each category alone. Commercial Vehicle coverage includes work trucks, but also the vehicles used for the combined business and personal use. If an accident occurs when using a personal-only vehicle for commercial purposes, personal insurance carriers may disallow coverage. Realtors driving clients around should have commercial- and personal-use coverage. Now, due to the National Commercial Motor Vehicle databases, a boating DUI in one state can impact commercial drivers licenses (CDL) in another. Employers need to monitor CDL motor vehicle reports regularly. Worker’s Compensation (WC) is no-fault coverage for work-related injuries. It is always critical to


provide safe working environments. Employers are required to provide WC in most states. Failure to comply can bring a criminal action. While optional in some states, such as Texas, it is recommended to help employees get suitable treatment, back-to-work, and protect employers from lawsuits. Sometimes Owners and Officers may exclude themselves from coverage, thereby lowering their WC premium, but risk no compensation if they too get injured on the job. Rates may be based on job category, payroll, and loss record (claims made). “Experience modifiers� reward established firms are having better than average claims record by lowering their rates. Inversely, firms with high claims records may pay higher rates or be non-renewed by carriers. Hybrid Solutions from multiple carriers may provide better coverage/rates.
