A Letter From Margaret Jackson, Publisher

We are Super-Powering Small

Businesses

Welcome to 2022. You made it! We must carry on with the vision and dreams for those that did not make it into 2022. We have faced significant losses over the last two years. It is time to look to promise. It is time to believe in a brighter future. It is time to let go of worry and fear. It is a dawning of a new day and a new year. The courage to move forward is your superpower. Small businesses are starting, growing, and thriving amid global challenges. Humankind has faced global changes and challenges throughout history. Humankind has adapted to the paradigm shifts, pandemics, environmental catastrophes. As you look around your world today, note that you are still adjusting and changing. 2022 is your Superpower year.

We need you and your hopes and dreams of entrepreneurship, business goals, and adventures to dust themselves off and get back up and dream again. Superpower your belief system and pump up the volume on the legacy you want to leave for the world. The generation behind you is counting on you. Let’s stop giving Covid a vote in our destiny. Fear is a game-stopper. We live in a day where life and death are constantly in your face. There is no time to waste. The reality is that we all have a set time to leave this planet. Until then, focus, commit to destiny, run your race with vigor, pump your arms, and fly like the wind. Win your race. Your superpower does not give up, and it does not give in. We are here to help you win your race. Welcome to the pursuit of purpose

Sincerely,

Top Four Super Power Small Business Tips 2022

1. Understand your business model. Small business owners need to complete a business model canvas to identify how they make money, identify the target audience, specify essential expenses, partners and collaborative relationships, required resources, overarching daily activities, and relationships building with their customers. If someone asks about your business model, you should state it in a strong 1-3 sentence response. It is how you make money. The key ingredients to a Business Model are sustainability, product, and price. The Business Model is the cornerstone of a business plan. Mural is a great SAAS program to help entrepreneurs, existing business owners, and startups complete a Business Model Canvas. The first 30 days are free. MURAL is a digital-first visual collaboration platform | MURAL

2. Create a solid business plan. A business plan is genuinely your road map to success. It is not just used to attract funding, although it certainly can. If that is all you are looking for, you have the wrong understanding of a business plan and its power. In December 2021, the latest data published by the SBA Office of Advocacy indicated that business opens and closes are nearly at the same rates? "In 2019, prior to the pandemic, 1.04 million business establishments opened, and 928,000 establishments closed. About 13 percent of business establishments are startups" (U.S. Small Business Administration, 2021, December). Having a solid business plan can help you anticipate obstacles be it political, economic, social, technological, legal, or environmental or better-called PESTLE. It will also require taking a closer look at your strengths and continuing building upon them, weaknesses areas needing improvement, opportunities to capitalize on, and threats oppositions that a business need to be prepared to face.

The business plan is your intellectual property, the secret weapon to power moves. Planning never stops in a business. So start with the essential plan, the business plan. Palo Alto SAAS Live Plan is the #1 small business plan writing software on the planet. The Small Business Concierge Communications and Digital Media is a proud collaborating partner. It has instructional videos to walk you through your best business plan writing experience. Business Plan Software With Performance Tracking | LivePlan

3. Create a Solid financial plan. Understanding your business finances is a nobrainer. The bottom line is to do it. Create a financial plan that is realistic to the business goals and is achievable. A financial plan should include your startup costs; we call this year zero. Chances are, you may require a loan and a payback schedule. The financial plan should consist of an expense model, and do not forget to include the employee taxes, worker's compensation estimates; these are often overlooked. The financial plan should consist of the revenue model, gross profits, COGS, Income Before Taxes, Federal and State Taxes, Net Profit(Loss), Net Sales, Cash Reserves Needed (if Net Profit is <$0), and Net Return on Investment (ROI). Palo Alto SAAS Live Plan is the #1 small business plan writing software on the planet and has a tremendous financial model plan. A partner to Palo Alto Software is Business Cents or Bcents, a superb solution to helping you understand and build your financial structure. Bcents

4. Invest in marketing and advertising. Here is the mind-blower—the stuck-in-the-mud thinking. Small businesses do not market and advertise well. Developing your brand is critical to your businesses' survival. It is like water to the human body; you need it. Do you know or understand your 7P Marketing Mix for digital marketing, product, placement, promotion, price, people, process, and physical environment? "Driving sales (51.3%) and building brand awareness (48.4%) are the two top digital marketing priorities for small businesses" (Leadpages, 2017). Do not miss opportunities to expand your brand online. It is a brave new world for small businesses and online commerce. Covid-19 has forced small businesses to engage in more substantial

online opportunities. It is necessary to reach an audience around the globe. "Place and promotion overlap when organizations extend their presence online with links from other sites or with microsites in relevant places as the brand gets wider promotion, and simultaneously increases its distribution (place) as the brand is, effectively, available for purchase more widely online" (Chaffey, 2017, p. 78). Back-linking is a clever way to show up in organic searches. Digital advertising brings customers by backlinking to your website. The SBC Magazine and Digital Catalog are backlink marketing and advertising powerhouses. Our digital advertising subscriptions offer small business brand visibility, awareness, and development, encourage customer connections and engagement, advertise and market on a mass-media scale, opportunities to go on LIVE broadcast radio around the globe from Silicon Valley. Small businesses must keep themselves in front of the eyes that matter, your customer. As a partner and collaborative with Palo Alto Software, advertising subscribers gain access to the member portal that gives them 30-days free of the Live Plan and a special offer from Live Plan after the 30-days. The portal includes business resources, power pod videos, quick tips to support small businesses, and many partners that want to help your small business succeed.

The Most Important Business in the World

When your business idea crystallizes, becomes legal, and begins the journey to become profitable your business becomes the most important business in the world. Why? Because you’re in charge and how well your business does reflect entirely upon you, your business acumen, and your leadership skills. You have vetted the market research, developed pro-forma financial statements, business, and financial models, and formed a small team of experts or are working with business intermediaries to help you in your (ad)venture. Only a few open issues remain that involve matters that are uncertain, complex, and ambiguous.

You’ve made it, congratulations! You may not feel as if this is a proper time to celebrate. Despite, your business is officially off the ground and running. Now the task-at-hand is to grow a sustainable organization, increase sales, and manage your resources. Consider, for instance, that there are valuable lessons to learn along the way. What you may believe to be true about your business, your industry, and how to increase value for your current

reflecting on daily activities, and allowing your creativity to flourish is vitally important. The degree to which you are knowledgeable and understand accounting, finance, economics, sales, marketing, information technology, human resources, purchasing, research, and development will enable you to make the wisest decisions. You will want to both invest in your business as well as in yourself to grow and become the best organizational leader possible. Be encouraged. You can do it!

Boundaries in the Workplace

In a work environment, it can be easy to fall into the pattern of allowing crossed boundaries because there is a lot of work to do. However, consider that if you are not careful, you will take on and do what others can do or take on what is not yours to do. Here are a few indicators that you may be allowing crossed boundaries:

You go to work wondering who is going to bother you today, or you are the one who can’t wait to clock out? Are you tired of coworkers continually pulling on you to do something that they can do? If this describes you, then it is time for a “boundary check”! Your internal alarm goes off when feeling violated in the workplace and when you are overextended with work responsibilities. What is the sound or voice of your “internal alarm clock”? It is usually that inner voice telling you “I’m so tired of this” or you ask yourself “why am I doing this”?

After a while, you become frustrated or resentful because it’s you that ends up being the one to do it. If you examine why you lose track of your tasks and take on other things, you will find you are seeking to gain validation from others. It is human to desire validation. Watch any child as they are being affirmed and validated often and you will see a child who becomes secure in who they are and happy with where they are. If you did not grow up with affirmations and validation, you are bound to look for validation in others, and those others sometimes are not the healthiest people for you to obtain their validation. And in the workplace, the real problem sets in when your need for validation outweighs your ability to accomplish your current work tasks.

As a small business owner, it is vital that everything within the business points to the vision and mission of the company. In the workplace, there should be key measurable goals that employees should work toward attaining. If you as a business owner or manager are not communicating clearly what those quantifiable goals and expectations are, you are not helping your employees to stay on track with what they are doing.

What if you are reading this and you recognize this is you, and you need a “boundary check”? Do not fear you can make adjustments to help you get back on track with what you need to do.

Here are a few suggestions on what adjustments you can make.

1. Make a workplace daily to-do-list. It can help you stay focused on daily tasks that need completion. Create a list for the next day and include un-completed tasks.

2. Put a “do not disturb” sign on your door or cubicle when it is time to be focused and work. If people knock on your door, don’t answer and if they come over to your cubicle, just tell them you are not available right now. Teach people not to disturb you when they see the sign.

3. Do not commit to helping with anything outside of your tasks without approval from your manager or immediate supervisor.

4. Reward yourself when you accomplish your tasks there is nothing wrong with self-validation and speaking positive words over yourself.

5. Remember, your focus is where you will end up!

You will find that as you accomplish your tasks, you are building skill sets that will qualify you to move up to your next level of promotion. Maintaining boundaries by focusing on your responsibilities will lead to you adding value to your company, value to your resume, and value to you as a person. Being an excellent employee is far more profitable than being the employee who does all kinds of tasks but doesn’t get their job done. Keep your boundaries in check!

Get Out of Your “Own” Way –8 Obstacles to Business Growth

Every business goes through stages, from the seed of an idea to startup to increasing levels of maturity and growth. Each step has its challenges, and none are easier than the last. In those transition periods, things can feel out of control. Many of your carefully crafted processes are no longer working, and you and your business feel like you are bursting at the seams. These are growing pains, as my mom used to call it. Businesses, at all stages, have them. After working with hundreds of small business owners in the past seven years, here are the most common obstacles I’ve heard about time and time again, and what you can do about them. Do you hear yourself in any or all of these complaints?

1.“Everyone is starting a podcast (or virtual summit, or YouTube channel). I should too!” Bright shiny object syndrome can strike at any stage of your business. When you look around you at your competitors or others that you feel are in your league, they seem to be doing more, accomplishing more, are more famous, earning more, doing more than you are. Just stop. If you are still in business after a year or two, you are doing just fine. Moreover, you are enough! Create a thoughtful, just-rightfor-you strategic plan for your business and stick to it. Earmark new projects, platforms or courses for the next time you are in planning mode; this is your business. Design it for yourself, not everyone else.

2. “The only one who can do it is ME ME ME!” You built this business by yourself and know every inch of it. You know what you need to do and

can do it faster and more accurately than anyone else. However, if most of the tactical work is done, or closely supervised by you, you are severely hampering your “own” growth. At some point, you will need to let go and train others to fill in for the majority of your functions, so that you can act as a real CEO.

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022 18

What does a real or true CEO do? It means building CEO time into your schedule. Block off a half-day each week, a full day each month, and perhaps a weekend each quarter for planning your future next steps. These are strategic planning blocks, not doing blocks. A CEO doesn’t do much day-to-day doing. The CEO is creating content, finding and nurturing high-level partnerships, planning and strategizing the future.

3. “I am EXHAUSTED”

Owning and running a business is not easy. We all know that. Especially in times of transition, it’s easy to run on all cylinders, work more than a typical work week, and not pay attention to anything but your rapidly growing business. You will burn out, and your family and your business will suffer. Before you get to that stage, build self-care into your schedule. Decide what replenishes you. Is it time with your family, incorporating exercise into your life, a walk, reading a book, going to a movie? Schedule repeating blocks of time on your calendar and make this non-negotiable.

4. “My to-do list just grows and grows.”

The common thread I see with female entrepreneurs at all levels of business is that they have forgotten the KISS principle (Keep it Simple, Sweetie). In a rush to find new revenue streams, build new packages and courses, new formats for their content, streamlining what’s already in place goes right out the window. Have a strategic plan and stick with it. You will have built your next six months or year during your CEO time. Once that is in place, don’t deviate. Find the top 3 tasks (or one task!) that you, as the true CEO need to accomplish each day. Don’t build out another activity until the ones already in place are smooth as silk, with processes in place and the correct team members making it happen. If you find your to-dos are getting out of hand, stop and re-evaluate. Are you doing more

than you initially planned for in your strategy? Do you have the right or enough support staff underneath you? Are they getting the job done? Do they know what they should be doing and what your expectations are? Consider outsourcing some of the tasks if you are not ready to expand your team.

5. “I have a good sense of where I want my business to go, but can’t figure out how to get there.”

At this stage, is when growth and transition are the hardest. The processes, procedures, and structures you carefully put in place for the first stage of your business may not be right for your next stage of growth.

It is the time to look outside of yourself for support, direction and new ideas. You can’t possibly know everything! Join a Mastermind or Group Coaching program. Seek one that is a paid program (skin in the game creates a more focused result). If you can, find one that has several members that are more advanced in their business than you are. Be sure you are a bit outside your comfort zone so that you have to stretch to participate. You will grow, and your business will thrive as a result.

Find a Business Coach, even for a short period (3-6 months is the shortest I would recommend) to help you see beyond your “own” walls. Others have been where you are.

6 Whom am I to…?

Imposter Syndrome rears its ugly head at every stage of business, no matter how successful you are. If you feel you need more courses, training, certifications, or degrees to establish your credibility, spend some time documenting the experience you DO have that create your expertise.

What jobs, clients, life experiences have you had that add up to your expertise? You are valued by the results you produce, not for the certifications and degrees that you have.

7. I don’t have any MONEY!

It takes some money to start a business. Start with

SBC Magazine Winter 2022 | 19

what you can afford, and grow from there. Seek out free resources first. There are hundreds of podcasts, blogs, free courses, and apps and tools available online. There are groups like the SBDC, and SCORE who offer free counseling. Take advantage of those!

Source for money. There are ways to get money when you need it. The SBA offers loans at a very reasonable rate. Some banks are more small business friendly than others. Friends and family (although those choices can be fraught with issues), or your credit cards are potential sources for start-up costs. You can always find a part-time job or start contracting with your area of expertise until your cash flow crunch is behind you. I’ve done it - It’s not the end of the world. It’s a transitional solution to a short-term problem.

8. I’m too late to the party. (It’s all been done before.)

It has all been done before, but not by you. It’s VERY rare that a business concept will be a one and only. You will always have competition. However, you will have your “own” spin on your niche too. Let your personality shine, develop your “own” methodology and framework to the services that you provide, and stand out from the crowd. Each one of these obstacles you can overcome with mindset shifts, or changes in your approach to your business. Get the help that you need and figure out how to overcome your obstacles and create and grow a profitable business.

Business Next Steps, What Would I Look for?

Congratulations, you are in business! That is an accomplishment given so many businesses have had to cease operations primarily due to the pandemic. Now, it is time to put your foot on the peddle and allow the peddle to grow roots into the floorboard.

Seriously, it’s not good to always be on full tilt-grinding. Because, if you know what you’re doing you should be looking at your business systems and working smart. Thank you for asking what I’d be doing.

Let’s face it, without customers you would not have a business at all. So, that my first focus. Continuously ask yourself what can you do to improve customer satisfaction. If you do that, customers will take care of your financial challenges.

Then, I would focus on my processes and internal infrastructure. If your customers increased, would you be able to keep up with the increased volume of business? If not, you need to think about what would be necessary to scale up. Consider, your infrastructure and processes are an important part of your intellectual capital.

What about your team? Are they happy, having fun, and learning and growing with your organization? If so, you’re good. Consider, it’s your team that helps keep your customers happy. These key human resources are also a critical part of your intellectual capital.

Lastly, I would focus on my financials. I know that does not seem intuitive. However, your financials are a lagging indicator of your organizational success. It’s your customers, infrastructure, and team that will influence your financial performance. So, yes I would look to understand my profitability by benchmarking and looking at the trend of my operating margin, gross profit margin, and return on capital.

Obviously, there’s so much more to it. The key is knowing with certainty what the numbers mean and what influences them. Eliminating blind spots and staying close to positive people who have walked the walk and talk the talk will be very helpful too.

Young and Savvy

Bill Gates was 20 years old when he founded Microsoft in 1975. Mark Zuckerberg was 19 when he launched Facebook in 2004. Microsoft and Facebook have valuations exceeding $500 billion. Bill represents my generation and Mark is of the millennial generation and both were young and savvy in their own time and unique style. Both men dropped out of Ivy League schools to pursue their respective tech visions. In no way, shape, form, or fashion am I suggesting for anyone to drop out of school, but I am suggesting that everyone follow and pursue your passion. Follow and pursue what wakes you up at night and causes you to rise early in the morning. Follow and pursue what makes you happy and satisfied. Follow the path that creates generational wealth and pave the way and support the next generation as they pursue their passion and purpose!

The very best years of my professional adult life came when I worked for myself as a partner in a magazine, or as an owner of a landscaping business, or as an owner of real estate ventures. These opportunities afforded me a great quality of life. Yes, I may have made more money working for someone else but as an entrepreneur I set the pace, created more time for family and philanthropic pursuits.

Young, savvy entrepreneurs are much needed for several reasons in any community. Making mistakes when one is younger provides more time to recover, plus you have youthful exuberance on your side. And making mistakes early gives one a head start on experience, knowledge base, and information built into a metrics which helps one evaluate future ventures through figures and statistics learned from said failures or mistakes.

Republished from 2018

Creating a path to generational wealth will eliminate and or stay the tide of so many ills that plague my community, the African American Community. My community consumes everyone’s products and services, yet in the grand scheme of things we produce very little to sell to a market that loves our creativity in music, fashion, marketing and the list goes on.

I have been asked many times by non African Americans, how can I/we help. My answer has changed over the years as I have matured and my answer today is simple; help us learn how to create a vision with know how and resources and support. Why should another community do so? Because we deserve a shot at correcting our on issues and creating sustainability, sufficiency and grit to create a path to generational success!

Albert Einstein once said, “Try not to be the most successful person, try to be the person that brings value.” The reason I love this quote is because young aspiring entrepreneurs may believe you have to be the smartest person in the room to be heard or present a well-versed and valuable idea to the table. No, find a niche and bring value to the subscribers of that niche.

The Advance Health Care Directive and Why You Need One

As an estate planning paralegal, on occasion, I will conduct trust signing meetings with clients to review and explain the documents that comprise his or her estate plan. The last document that is discussed is the Advance Health Care Directive. Why? Because it is the one document that generates the most conversation. Really.

If you aren’t already familiar, the Advance Health Care Directive is a document that provides the principal (you) with an opportunity to express your wishes about your medical care in advance of a medical emergency. Most people don’t like to think about, or discuss, this particular document because it reminds him or her of their mortality. I get it. But…buses and trucks don’t discriminate. In other words, an accident can happen to you at anytime and most likely it won’t be a part of your plan. However, you have the ability to plan what happens after

a possible accident; and your family will thank you for it.

Visualize yourself in these real-life scenarios…. You receive a call that mom has suffered a heart attack and the ambulance has taken her to the hospital. You rush to the hospital and the doctor informs you that your mother has complete heart failure and that the only thing keeping her alive is that machine that she is hooked up to. The doctor further explains that due to her age and physical condition, your mother won’t survive heart replacement surgery; essentially, your mother will be confined to that hospital bed for the remainder of her life. You know that your mom wouldn’t want to be kept alive by a machine, she even wrote it out in her Advance Health Care Directive. As much as you don’t want to let her go, you know that this was her wish so you inform the physician and allow your mother to be removed from life support and pass away peacefully. This recently happened to a friend of mine and he was relieved that he did not have to make a decision about whether or not to keep his mother on life support because she had already expressed her

wishes in her Advanced Health Care Directive.

You receive a call that your loved one has been in an automobile accident and he or she is in surgery, but the chances of survival are very low. By the time you reach the hospital, your loved one is out of the operating room, but hooked up to every life-saving device imaginable because he or she can’t breathe without it and the prognosis is grim, at best. The doctor then informs you that your loved one has suffered irreversible brain damage and the only thing keeping him or her alive are those machines. What do you do next? Keep your loved one on life support and hope for a miracle? Take him or her off of life support? What would he or she want? I don’t know what to do! This happened to my family. My brother was only 21 years of age when he was in a fatal motorcycle accident and guess what? He did not have an Advance Health Care Directive; I mean who does at 21 right? Nonetheless, my mother had to try and answer all of the questions posted earlier while trying to grieve and grasp reality that her child was going to die.

My goal isn’t to scare you. My goal is to simply make you aware that horrible accidents and medical emergencies occur every day to families everywhere. The point is, to relieve you and your family of the burden of having to answer difficult

questions and guessing what you would want should you be in an accident or have a medical emergency. Would my brother have survived if he had an Advance Health Care Directive? No. But if he did have one, my mother would have known if he wanted to be kept alive or not, on life support, with no chance of recovery.

I know that preparing an Advance Health Care Directive isn’t a fun task; in fact, I’m sure that it’s on your list, just way at the bottom. I encourage you to try and make it a priority. Actually, every adult in your household over 18 years of age should have one. Oh yes, this means the new, young adult in the family should also prepare his or her own Advance Health Care Directive so that he or she can express his or her wishes and alleviate mom and dad from the burden of trying to make decisions during serious a medical crisis. Remember, accidents and medical emergencies happen to adults and to children… buses and trucks don’t discriminate.

Preparation for Music Production

Alot can be said about music production, and truly only qualified people can bring you accurate information about it. With that in mind, let me first tell you what qualifies me to talk about this subject.

I am a 4-time Grammy Nominated record/music producer and a two-time Dove Award winner performer. I have written and played on some of the biggest hit songs in the music business, including hit movie soundtracks (Animal House starring John Belushi and Which Way Is Up starring Richard Pryor). Just one month ago, I had the number 4 hit song on the Apple Music UK charts, to name a few of my accomplishments.

The difference between creating music that hits and creating music for your personal pleasure is always your approach to production. Production is simply making creative decisions about your tracks that appeal to your market. Your market is

who you want to hear your music. If you create music just because you love to, your market is usually your friends and family. But if you’re going to reach the radio and media masses (internet, television, satellite radio, etc.), you will have to make more complex decisions. Sometimes these decisions may go against your creative convictions. But that’s okay.

Reaching the masses means you must compete against what’s already out there. Then you must listen to what your competitors are doing, both creatively and technically. Sometimes you hear a song on the radio and think it sounds awful, but you must accept that the artist found something that appeals to the listening audience and is a way to get his song in the market. That deserves some credit. Question, locate, and identify what they are doing.

Is it the effects? Is it the performance? Is it the mix? Is it the unique sounds? Is it the old-school sound? Is it the tempo of the music? Is it the vocal delivery? These are just a few of the elements that go into music production (there are many more). If you don’t understand these principles, take some time to study to find out what these elements are. There is tremendous competition in the music industry, and not all music will impact the mass audience. You need to know what separates a hit song from something that does okay. There is an audience out there for you, but you must find it.

I was a record producer/artist/songwriter on the Whitfield Records label in Los Angeles when I was younger. We had tremendous competition for having a song placed on the label’s major artists. I was blessed enough to learn a massive amount of industry protocols for Kenoly Music Production, from one of the giants in the industry, Norman Whitfield. It was there where I first learned that there is no bad song, just songs that are not right for certain artists. Matching the correct song, production, performance, and energy is a unique skill worth taking the time to study. Find an experienced producer to help you understand your music production project and give your music the best chance possible.

The Importance of Music Technology for 21st Century Music Programs

The musical landscape in America saw numerous changes throughout the 20th century, and continued developments in the 21st century, specifically in the fields of recording, and electronic music composition and performance. Advancements in recording technology have led to higher quality recordings as well as the ability for independent musicians to create and produce their music. The creation of new digital technologies for creating musicportable synthesizers, audio editing and sequencing software, MIDI controllers, and availability of thousands of plugins for signal processing - have opened artists to new methods of expression and sound design. Online companies like Bandcamp, Tunecore, and CD Baby provide independent artists the means to share, distribute and sell their music without the need for record labels and contractual obligations. The myriad of technological developments has unquestionably changed the paradigm of the art and business of music. Now, more than ever, an understanding of music technology - even at a basic levelis essential for any professional and formal education in music.

The American university system was home to some of the earliest experiments in electronic music, notably the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center and the electronic music studios at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. John Chowning, a professor who taught at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University (CCRMA), developed the technique of FM synthesis in 1973. This method of synthesis became a staple of pop music with the creation of the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer in 1983, a leading form of synthesis for music in the mid-80s and later in video games of the 90s. Many of the approaches to modern electronic music have their roots in the experimental music that existed primarily in academia, and for decades was even on the fringes of contemporary concert music. In the midst of the rapidly changing music industry, many academic institutions across the countrypublic and private - have expanded their music departments to include electronic music studios, as well as programs dedicated to music recording and engineering. However, numerous academic institutions have not added electronic music and engineering programs to their curricula, or continue to keep it a fringe field that is not necessarily part of the required course sequence for all undergraduate music majors. The lack of these programs in any institution is of concern and in need of attention. Of greater importance is the need for placing the appropriate weight into these disciplines, because of the incredible service they offer students - a skill

My coursework in music technology was unequivocally a key aspect of my music education...

set necessary for being a 21st century musician. Current practices of electronic music and the field of audio engineering require a vast array of knowledge beyond an understanding of music theory, history, composition, and performance technique. Being an engineer, electronic composer, and/or sound artist necessitates a comprehension of signal processing, hardware (cables, interfaces, speakers, microphones, consoles, etc.), software, audio editing, and the fundamentals and physics of sound. Competency of audio technology can be applied to nearly any and all practices of music beyond the aforementioned fields. It is becoming increasingly common to amplify instrumentalists of all kinds in live performances; acoustic players are utilizing technology for performing concerts and recording full albums of electro-acoustic compositions (Pamela Z, Lindsey Goodman, Keith Kirchoff), and some are blending genres of pop and classical with implementation of various types of live effects processing and multimedia productions (Jacob TV, Holly Herndon, Tyondai Braxton). In 2017, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble began utilizing binaural recording and headphones during live performances to create a fully immersive listening experience. Organizations like the Society of Electro-Acoustic Music of the United States (SEAMUS), and International Computer Music Association (ICMA) create numerous opportunities for the performance and research of experimental and avant-garde electronic music practices. Classical musicians, like independent songwriters, artists and producers, must also record and distribute their artistic endeavors, thus reinforcing the importance of possessing, at minimum, a functional understanding of the music industry, recording processes, and methods for distribution.

My academic coursework was filled with a wide range of courses in music and audio technology at all institutions I attended from Bachelors through Doctorate. That particular path is not common for many music students, however, these courses helped shape every facet of my career for the last decade. I’ve worked as a composer, live sound engineer, recording engineer, mixing and mastering engineer, as a music and sound editor for TV and film, as a freelance sound designer, and currently as an instructor of music and audio at SAE Expression College in Emeryville, CA. My coursework in music technology was unequivocally a key aspect of my music education, and in some ways prepared me for my music career just as much as my extensive training in music theory, history and aural skills. Any and all situations in which I’ve worked as a live sound technician or recording engineer were undeniably smoother and more productive when working with musicians who possessed knowledge of amplification, microphone placement, and the process of recording in a studio or concert hall. As our lives become increasingly linked to advances in technology, so must our models for education. I maintain that academia is first and foremost a place for people to expand their horizons, to gain exposure to knowledge and cultivate an understanding of the world around us. Nevertheless, one cannot understate the inherent function of academia as, to some degree, job training. If the goal of music programs in higher education is to cultivate artistry while preparing creative minds to thrive in the everchanging world of technological innovation, then we must accept the necessity of, at least, a basic understanding of electronic music, signal processing, and principles of acoustics for all music students. Expanding the core music curriculum to fill these gaps provides young artists with so little to lose, yet much to gain.

Albert Wright: A Community Leader Helping Youth See Themselves in the Semiconductor Industry

Childhood

Albert Wright was born in Philadelphia in 1962, and raised in Gary, Indiana. As a kid, he was adventurous and curious. He used to climb out of his bedroom window, up the antenna on the side of his house to the roof, where he would watch the clouds in the sky and dream of becoming an astronaut.

In school, Albert was known as the class clown. “Being a class clown is a struggle because when the teacher is instructing, you are focused on getting the attention of the students in the classroom,” Wright said. “I was able to perform in class and on tests but rarely turned in my homework. I still have report cards from kindergarten that note, ‘Albert talks too much.’”

Early Career

In 1983, Albert enlisted in the United States Navy. He became an Aviation Electronics Technician working on the flight station, navigation systems, security systems, and radars at the Lockheed P-3 Orion in Moffett Field, Calif, where NASA’s Ames Research Center shared the runways with the Navy.

“This was a pivotal time for me as a young airman. Stationed at hangar one, I saw all sorts of aircraft coming in and out of NASA. When I was working on the flight line, I regularly saw these two men coming in and out of the hangar dressed in civilian clothes. Navy personnel like me were always dressed in uniform, so one day, I asked a senior petty officer: ‘Who are these guys and what do they do?’”

The men were tech reps who worked for Motorola, Inc. If something were to go wrong with the radio installed in the flight station during beta testing, they would fix it.

“That’s when I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I later learned that they were what Lam Research and others in the industry refer to as field service engineers.”

Career in the Silicon Valley

After serving in the US Navy for four years, Albert decided to pursue a career in the technology industry in California’s Silicon Valley. He ultimately served on an “extensive tour” with several tech companies.

“I think I worked for 14 tech companies. Each one increased my knowledge and my skillset in ultrahigh vacuum systems. It took 17 years before I finally became a field service engineer, servicing scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with Hitachi High-Tech America, Inc.”

“When I began with Hitachi, I didn’t know what an SEM was, but I fell in love with the job because it involved taking things apart and putting them back together, troubleshooting, and visiting customer sites. On the first day on the job, I had a revelation. I said to myself, ‘I’d love to teach youth

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022 40

about the SEM.’ When I grew up in Gary, Indiana, I had no idea this type of technology existed.”

“The focus of my engineering technician master role at Lam Research is to service SEMs. These microscopes are multi-million-dollar pieces of equipment. Unlike an optical microscope, SEMs are massive in size - some can be the size of a refrigerator, stove, and kitchen table, combined.”

At Lam, Albert and the company’s engineering and technician teams utilize SEM and scanning transmission electron microscopes to examine small silicon wafer samples and determine whether they comply with the features needed by the company’s customers – the world’s leading chipmakers. This process demands a high degree of precision; the sample must remain steady so the image will be accurate and used as a measure of quality control.

“For me, the most fulfilling part of my job is the hands-on troubleshooting. And I enjoy working with the PhDs, engineers, and technicians that operate Lam’s scanning electron microscopes. When I speak with my team, I ask them about their families, what they do during their time off, where they grew up – one of the best parts of my job are my coworkers and getting to hear their stories.”

Community Outreach

“The first time I heard about the 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley was in 2004 – they were awarding my daughter with the organization’s top scholarship. I was impressed to see all these beautiful African Americans celebrating education at the scholarship gala. But it wasn’t until 2015, after I joined Lam Research, that a colleague approached me and asked me to consider becoming a member.”

At the first meeting Albert attended, he was introduced to the organization’s mentorship program, which followed the principle of “CuBu: If I can see you, then I can be you.”

Albert was inspired to convey this concept to Lam Research and invite students of color from local middle and high schools to take a tour and connect with semiconductor engineering professionals who looked just like them.

Chip structures, such as 3D NAND, can have features a thousand times smaller than a grain of sand. These structures can be imaged using a scanning electron microscope. Image courtesy of the Lam Blog.

In 2016, Albert became a member of the 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley.

“At the time, they were seeking volunteers to restart their mentoring program, and I volunteered. My schedule at Lam allowed me to have flexible hours, so I was able to go into local middle schools and mentor students there.”

That same year, Albert organized the first ‘CuBu technology tour’ at Lam, garnering support from his colleagues across the company.

“Afterwards, I gathered up my colleagues who had helped host the tour and asked them to form a club. The initial name was going to be ‘Lash Out’ – we were serious about teaching students about technology.”

The club eventually evolved into a Lam Research employee resource group known as C.L.A.S.S. (Community of Latinos and African Americans for Student Success) Outreach. Their mission is to encourage African American and Latino students to reach higher education standards and promote careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM.

C.L.A.S.S. Outreach, whose motto is “Impact Through Exposure,” encourages student participants to explore a wide variety of STEM career paths – ultimately helping to unleash the infinite potential of African American and Latino communities.

“To see the looks on these kids’ faces when they’re exposed to technology is incredible.”

To date, the C.L.A.S.S. Outreach program has hosted over 1,000 students from more than two dozen middle and high schools and launched 13 tours – including collaborations with leading tech companies, including Cisco Systems, NASA Ames Research, Tesla, and FB-Oculus. The organization also maintains community partnerships with 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley, Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, Firehouse Ministries, and Jubilee Bridge Church.

Today, Albert continues to serve the 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley’s mentoring program as its chairman. In October 2021, he was appointed vice president of the Silicon Valley Black Chamber of Commerce, responsible for digital marketing and encouraging black-owned small businesses to join the chamber, as well as vice president of the Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurial Development.

Albert also serves as a volunteer at US Tech Education Center. He recruits students and veterans to join the organization, helping to develop the next generation of STEM leaders through technical training in 3D CAD modeling.

Video game Streamer “Ninja” Reportedly Earning $500,000 Per Month

In March, gaming streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins claimed to be making $500,000 a month streaming Epic Games’ newest title, Fortnite, a new battle royale title that was released only a few weeks ago. At first blush, this statement seems almost absurdmaking money by playing video games, especially such a new one, and especially at such an astonishing rate is enough to give anyone pause. It was no overnight success. Blevins is not the first game player to broadcast his entertaining videos to a wide audience, nor did he just plug in his first webcam yesterday.

The practice of ‘streaming’ is a relatively new, internet-enabled type of live broadcast, more like a live radio show than television. The host of a stream will select a game to play (the features of a “good” streaming game is an article of its own!), and using a service such as Twitch, will broadcast a real-time image of their screen to whoever tunes in. Usually, streamers will use some chroma-key (green screen) technology to overlay their, own, face into one corner of the screen, in order to interact with the game and audience simultaneously. There are hundreds of popular streamers, thousands of middling “B-list” celebrities, and uncountable aspiring hobbyists. Blevins is at the top of the scene, with nearly 6.2 million YouTube subscribers, 4.3 million followers on Twitch, and, according to Forbes magazine, 160,000 subscribers who pay $4.99 a month for premium access to Blevins’ channel. There is no doubt that Ninja has tapped into a rich vein, a zeitgeist that is making him very wealthy. The question is, why?

To understand streaming culture, Blevins’, own, history serves as a starting point. His gaming career began a decade ago as a professional Halo player, in the world of competitive eSports. These organized

tournaments of various games (from strategy, scifi war games such as StarCraft, to 1vs1 fighters like Street Fighter, to first or third-person shoots such as Counter-Strike or Overwatch, draw audiences in much the same way as any other competitive game. The matches are organized between dedicated players who practice becoming as skilled as possible, in games that their viewers are deeply familiar with. The matches, then, are exciting due to the high-level play involved and relies on the audience’s familiarity with the game rules to create suspense and drama. The prize money and accolades are substantial, but as in traditional sports, fans aren’t enthusiastic about the paycheck the champions receive. They want to see their team win spectacularly.

For fans of action-packed third-person shooter games, Blevins represents a skilled master at the top of the field. His ability to navigate a battlefield, staying out of sight of his enemies, meanwhile manipulating various objects or items, and of course, hitting his targets, is extremely compelling. Much like Steph Curry’s ability to drain a half-court shot with barely a flick of the wrist, Blevins can run across the Fortnite landscape, building wooden ramps and platforms to create a path into the sky, and without hesitation, pop off a long-distance sniper rifle shot with unnerving accuracy.

His technical prowess is only a small part of the package, though. Successful stream channels are invariably entertaining in the same way a lively sports broadcast is. Instead of a third-party, though, it is the player himself providing colorful commentary, reacting to their own success or failure, and interacting in real-time with the audience. Compare this to the celebrations of players on the football field, when after a touchdown, the player leaps into the stands to give fans high-fives.

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022 44

The interactive nature of the various platforms creates a community among the audience of a good streamer. The player himself will interact with fans, and by subscribing, donating or otherwise paying for it, truly dedicated fans can gain greater access to this nouvelle célébrité in exactly the same way a cashed-up fan might pay for ringside or season tickets, or buy an autographed ball.

Blevins seems to have found an extraordinarily successful groove: he is colorful, entertaining, very talented, and seems to walk a careful line of ‘family-friendly’ content. This is not always the case--some streamers are substantially more ‘blue’ than Blevins, and parents are well-advised to monitor their younger children’s consumption of YouTube or Twitch streamers. Even if the game itself is child-friendly (Minecraft, for example), the streaming personality might not be. Consider if Howard Stern were to narrate an otherwise innocuous volleyball game.

The combination of competition, unpredictability, and personality have converged in online streaming culture. The interactive foundation of the web not only allows for bilateral communication between audience and streamer but also collective reciprocity among the audience community itself. It’s also incredibly easy to just give it a try, as easy as https://www.twitch.tv/ ninja in a web browser.

So next time someone asks “Why would you pay to watch someone else play a videogame?” you might just ask why anyone pays to watch some tall people try to throw a ball through a hoop.

Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Provide a Budget to Your Event

No matter how many questions are on a questionnaire, one question for sure is always there, and that question is “What is Your Budget?”

You would think I was asking for their date of birth, driver’s license number, social security number, what street did you grow up on, and so on. Seriously, it’s like pulling teeth for some clients and, honestly, quite frustrating for event planners.

Why might you ask? Remember, my job is to sell the dream, saving my client’s time and money. When a client is hesitant to share their actual budget, instead of responding with “I don’t know” or “I want it to be unique and fun,” I am immediately at a disadvantage that eventually costs my client more time and money.

As an Event Planner, I am selling my clients their dream. It does not matter if it’s a 21st birthday party, engagement party, wedding, baby shower, anniversary, or retirement celebration; it is my job to sell the dream and bring it to life while saving the client time and money.

Every Event Planner I know has an introductory questionnaire for their clients to complete. Five questions I include in my confidential questionnaire are:

1. What is your favorite color, and what does it say about you?

2. Imagine you have two weeks off and enough money to travel anywhere in the world. Where would you go?

3. What food or dish makes your mouth water just thinking about it?

4. What movie is so good; you recommend it to all your friends?

5. What is the one thing everybody thinks they know about you, but they, really, don’t know?

I have found this issue with clients spending $10,000 for a baby shower to $200,000 for a wedding. It is my opinion that if a client believes they need to guard themselves against sharing their actual budget with the person they have hired to create their one-of-akind event, then they have chosen the wrong event planner. The relationship that is forming must be from a place of trust.

Let me give you a couple of examples to help you understand my point.

I have a C-suite executive client who wanted to throw a retirement/anniversary party for her and her husband’s closest friends and family. She came to me and said, “I know nothing about planning an event. I want to be at a lovely venue, and our favorite color is blue. I want there to be dancing, good food and a fun time. My budget is $150,000”. It is a planner’s dream client. Specifically, on how much she was willing to spend. I am happy to report we stayed within her budget, and at the end of the night, she told me, “It was perfect.”

I have another C-suite client for who I have planned

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022 48

several events. She has a beautiful home where she enjoys hosting events. Their property includes a pond, two guest cottages, and a vineyard. When she calls me with a new event, I have her complete the questionnaire, and she is very responsive until we get to the “What’s your budget?” question. She will say things like, “You know, I was thinking of a Tuscanthemed dinner party for 75 guests, with warm colors, traditional Italian dishes, excellent Chianti and great music. And whatever it takes to make it spectacular”.

That type of response will require more of my team’s time which is going to cost more money. My team and I will develop more than one design aesthetic summary to present to the client. It will require more calls to vendors, caterers, musicians, etc. One design with a budget of $40,000 or less and another design north of $40,000. Both will be presented to the client for her approval: but it’s more time and more money for the client. I am hired to eliminate the client from overspending on time and money.

So here are my three takeaways on the subject:

1. If you do not trust your event planner, you have the wrong event planner.

2. Change your mindset if you believe your event planner will make it their goal to spend every dime of your budget. Ask them questions about best spending practices using your budget. Your event planner can help set your mind at ease.

3. If you want to see where the money is spent, ask your event planner to provide you with a spreadsheet of the expenses throughout the planning stages.

A professional event planner never has anything to hide when it comes to the client’s money, and a client has the right to know how their money is being spent.

Income Producing Asset

BUICK ENVISION 2022 - TURO

As your “Leaving A Legacy,” Realtor the intention is to educate our clients to acquire Cash Flow or Income Producing Assets. Leading by example, I purchased my first one last year in October. It’s a single family home used for short term leasing on Air BNB.

After a successful year, and the confirmation of our very first business loan, we are now able to scale our portfolio. Our latest income producing asset is a Buick Envision 2022. This will be used for short term leasing coupled with the Air BNB in Sacramento California. I am now one step closer to my retirement goal of replacing my Full Time Employment income.

The next step in this area will be to acquire more assets to improve my overall monthly Cash Flow through the profit of real estate transactions and the successfulness of our short term leasing business model.

It was a tedious six months, but with my persistence and Panda’s patience we got it done. Three months into my work with Panda, I was introduced to The Inclusivity Project by my good friend and business mentor Juavette Johansen at one of her Get on F.I.R.E. (Financial, Insurance, Real Estate and Insurance) webinars. The information was timely for what I needed to do in order to take my business to the next level and work with African American business coaches. So, I signed up right away. In about one week, I was connected with my business advisor Coach Margaret, who assisted me in getting my Small Business Certification. I was energized by Coach Margaret’s enthusiasm, inspiration and wisdom. She then connected me with Working Solutions to complete the application and get my documents submitted. Boom!!! In 30 days I received my first ever business loan. Me and my family was elated. For the first time in the 20 years that I’ve been trying to start and maintain a business, I got the support and help that I needed! There is nothing that I can’t accomplish with the supportive network of friends I’ve made and help that I need as an African American business through The Inclusivity Project. I’m juiced about my future, retiring from my job and becoming a full-time business owner, and leaving a legacy for my family. It’s never too late to leave a legacy!

Many thanks to:

Insight Beyond Eye Sight

When one of your senses is weakened the other senses grow stronger. The medical community confirms senses growing stronger after a loss of another sensor. I lost some of my eyesight when I was 14 months old. A frustrated adult hit my head on something while violently shaking me. I received medical attention 10 days later. My recovery is extraordinary. Statistics for a shaken baby syndrome or traumatic head injury are for children under the age of two show how fatal these injuries can be. Resilience is key to my survival. Living as a legally blind, black woman, I rely on resilience to feel safe. My pliability helps me recover from bumps and bruises when I run into or trip over something or someone I don’t see. My resilience reminds me that I am not a failure even though it takes me longer to do a task that is easy for someone with normal eyesight. My resilience offers a lifeline when I am struggling to find my value and worth as a legally blind black woman. My eye-sight is damaged, but

my vision is perfect. Do you need to remember how resilient you are? Have you survived a life-threatening event? How do you find your way out of despair?

As I go through the ups and downs of life, I am committed to sharing about my resilience so that others can find inspiration. I advocate for awareness and prevention of child abuse. I share the tools that I have used on my journey to healing from my being abused.

Imposter Syndrome – Flip the Script!

Feel Like a Fraud? It Happens to the Best of Us.

Definition:

Wikipedia: Impostor Syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychosomatic pattern in which people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a “fraud.”

When I start working with clients, one of the first subjects we deal with is the mindset. One of the topics that always, always come up for the female entrepreneur is “Who am I to think I can do this?” or teach this or provide this service, or whatever. The fear is all the same. Moreover, if you let that fear run your show, it will keep you from reaching for your dreams.

The truth is, the further you go in your business or career, the more risks you may have to take and the more likely it is that “imposter syndrome” will show up. If you have experienced feeling like a fraud at any point in your life or career, chances are you have chalked up your accomplishments to luck, charm, connections, or some other external factor. Psychologists tell us that the personality types most likely to have “imposter syndrome” are perfectionists and overachievers. That’s right: The superwomen.

That sounds like most entrepreneurs to me! So let’s talk about how to break through it. Identify what is shaking your confidence. The more you can pinpoint and define the issue, the more you can confront it head-on with some actionable solutions.

1. Remember your real life value and all that you have achieved.

I’ve started a “Look back 2018” document where I record everything that I have accomplished, big or little, business or personal. I add to it on an ongoing basis. It builds confidence!

2. Stop comparing yourself to others. I know, easier said than done.

There will always be someone else that is farther along than you are, so what’s the point? Stay focused on your path and capacities. You may need to opt out of newsletters and curtail your social media habit to keep your eyes on the prize.

3. Look at your language, both internal and external.

“I think, I feel, it may just be me, but...” Stop right there. Consciously upgrade your language with more confident, assertive phrases, and you will reframe your self-image. “In my opinion,” “I have a question, and I’m sure I’m not the only one,” are examples that communicate much more strength. Be on the lookout for words and phrases you can eliminate or tweak.

4. Understand that there is no “right way.

” I’m sure there are multiple techniques for conducting specific surgeries! If you perceive that someone has “cracked the code,” or are the ultimate expert, try looking to them for guidance and influence, rather than making yourself wrong.

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022 58
The fear is all the same. And, if you let that fear run your show, it will keep you from reaching for your dreams.

5. Take a calculated risk.

What would you do if you were not afraid or insecure? Write it down, tell someone else, and take even a small step in a new direction. If you don’t succeed, so what? Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Don’t let Imposter Syndrome rob you of your progress and ultimate success.

6. Everyone starts somewhere.

Your perspective and point of view will be unique and will resonate with just the right people. If it doesn’t, then they are not the right client or customer for you.

7. Think you are the only one?

Famous actors, artists, CEO’s and the most successful people are the most likely to experience “imposter syndrome.” Consider it a symptom of success. You are in good company! However, manage it, so it is only a tiny voice that does not cripple your progress. Assume the power pose! You got this! Learn more about “Imposter Syndrome” at https://www.elysetager.com.

Introducing Margaret Jackson, Small Business Concierge

The meeting with Margaret Jackson, Publisher of the Small Business Concierge took place over the phone. I had set up the phone interview at a time when she was as busy as she could be with tight deadlines set and no wiggle room to work with. Likewise, for me, I was up against a very tight deadline to satisfy a dissertation deliverable.

Margaret was gracious and patient. I had shared with her the focus of this initial interview would be to share about her, this Small Business Concierge company, and tidbits of interesting business experiences she has had that propelled her on to this big stage. At about the time when deadlines were so close it seemed almost impossible to get the interview completed, a way out of no way happened. We burned the midnight oil to make it happen.

Jesse Lee: Thank you for this opportunity to interview you and pick your brain. Margaret, tell us who is Margaret Jackson?

Margaret Jackson: Thank you, Jesse. I was born as a twin and raised outside of Chicago, Illinois. I grew up thinking that I was not ever going to be smart enough to have a career that I could be proud of until my high school drama teacher Arlene Hawks gave me advice on going to a top junior college in Illinois. I knew at that moment that she saw something in me and believed in me. When I graduated from high school, my grades were not good, and I got rejected from every college that I applied for admission to. But, I hadn’t properly prepared, and I didn’t know that I needed to prepare for life after highschool as a student. I keep my high school transcript as a reminder of where I started and where I am today. I am not at the finish line, but I am not where I used to

be. It took all the courage that I could muster-up to take that first step after all of the college rejections and then going to the top community college in Illinois, College of DuPage it changed and shaped my life. I became a high preforming student, and I fell in love with the art of learning. Thank you, Arlene Hawks for seeing my value, when no-one else could see it, including me.

Jesse Lee: What is your background?

Margaret Jackson: I have formal training in Film, Film/ TV, and Business. I used those disciplines to start my first small business in 2001, as a multi-media television/ audio production company. In 2007, we were on the success path. I had built the company from $150.00 to a six-figure company, wrote a 54-page business plan that allowed us to secure $225,000.00 in bank loan and line funding, as the economy was crashing. Little did we know, that our run at becoming a $1 million production company was going to be thwarted by a severe economic downturn.

Jesse Lee: Margaret, tell me what drives you?

Margaret Jackson: My faith and the destiny that God put on my life. I believe that I am supposed to be the small business, women in business, youth advocate/cheerleader and mass-media platform provider that supports the next generation of business leaders, entrepreneurs, and dreamers. I subscribe to everyone living the most optimal career life possible. I believe you only have one shot at it, so make it count. The realization that one life has the power to change the world and focusing on it eliminates the roadblocks of race, gender, discrimination of all kinds and all excuses.

Republished
from 2018

Jesse Lee: Why did you start the Small Business Concierge?

Margaret Jackson: About five years ago, I was sitting at IHOP, having my strawberries and pancakes. I began asking myself, what obstacles do small businesses face? I came up with a mix of answers. I wanted to develop solutions that changed the game for small businesses and women in business.

Jesse Lee: What are the pros and cons of business ownership?

Margaret Jackson: Pros 1. You own your own business Cons 2. You own your own business. It is a great responsibility to own your own business the pros and cons are endless. If a person chooses business ownership, count the cost, grow a thick skin, it will come in handy and don’t give up on building your business dream.

Introducing Margaret Jackson, Small Business Concierge

Jesse Lee: In the past, what was the most significant obstacle to the success of one of your businesses and how did you overcome it?

Margaret Jackson: The most significant obstacle is getting past business ownership fears. Learning my true value through my faith and believing that I am born for greatness made all the difference. I focused on the truth about who I am and my self-worth. Obstacles will always be there, so I lean into the barriers and jump over them as they come.

Jesse Lee: What do you think small businesses need to know about management, operations, and personnel?

Margaret Jackson: Great question. Learn all that you can about how to operate a small business. Use local resources, like SCORE, SBDC, SBA, Workto-Future, Small Business Allys within your city. A small business owner does not have to go it alone. Managing and operating a business is a serious responsibility and should not be entered into lightly. A well thought out business plan helps because it is the roadmap for their business. A business owner should critically think through and document how they intend to manage and operate their business. There aren’t a one-size fit all managing and operation styles, but there are fundamental principles relevant

higher capacity knowing that the leadership of the company appreciates them. Make it a priority to tell your team, how they are appreciated and valued. Win together. Build a workplace community that your personnel will want to be each day. Google and Salesforce are excellent models on how well they treat their people.

Jesse Lee: What do you think it takes to maintain growth?

Margaret Jackson: Develop a solid brand image. Marketing, Branding and consistently advertising seems to be a low priority for small business owners. Small businesses hop around hoping to hit that mother load, and it doesn’t happen that way. Sales study’s tell us that customers need 5-12 contacts with your brand to think about buying, some say 18 contacts. The point is, customers need consistency and frequency in becoming familiar with your product and brand. You want growth, develop your brand, work the brand, plan your marketing, and monitor your advertising. Growth is not by accident; it is strategic and methodical.

Jesse Lee: Does strategy need a strategy?

Margaret Jackson: Yes, your strategy needs a strategy starting with the master strategy a business plan.

Jesse Lee: What pitfalls arise when you do not have a marketing strategy?

to all companies, take the time to learn them. Personnel, remember, they are the team for the dream treat them well. Stay in compliance with employment and contractor laws. Your personnel will perform with commitment and confidence at a

Margaret Jackson: Budgeting pitfalls, loss of new business opportunities, unmet goals, lack of a clear target market, for starters. Small businesses shun making marketing a top priority and without it, the course, inadvertently, has been set for an under-performance business or limping along. Your marketing strategy has to be a top priority it is the pathway to developing strong brand awareness, branded trust, and ultimately increased revenue, as the company implements their marketing strategy. How do you sell consistently and frequently if customers do not know you’re there? You can’t.

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022
Hire smart, stay away from too much nepotism, select a team for the dream.

Jesse Lee: What are the critical success factors that contribute to business success?

Margaret Jackson: First the small business owner has to be committed and focused. Second have an explicit understanding of your business model. 3. Bite the bullet and construct a solid business plan, and marketing plan. 4. Get business support from the local city, county, and state business development resources to build strong business infrastructure at the start of the business. 5. Hire smart, stay away from too much nepotism, select a team for the dream. 6. Execution is strategic make every move count in your journey toward business success. 7. Be patient ebbs and flows happen in the business ride it out.

Jesse Lee: What are the biggest business challenges today?

Margaret Jackson: Staying relevant with the changing technology and knowing which is the best technology available in supporting small business management and operations. For example, Salesforce for small business CRM sales tool, Fundbox stabilizing the small business cash flow challenges, Intuit Online Quickbooks that supports managing the company’s bookkeeping needs, and Go Payment for on-the-spot customer transactions using your smartphone device.

Jesse Lee: What is your best advice for start-up businesses?

Margaret Jackson: Get help! Locate the nearest America SBDC and request their free small business support before starting the business. Sign on as a pre-venture. Get it right from your very first step.

Jesse Lee: What do small businesses need to know about the Small Business Concierge?

Margaret Jackson: It is their voice, it is their platform, it is their opportunity to springboard off of it and be the next game changer for their industry.

Jesse Lee: Do you have a right to win in your chosen market?

Margaret Jackson: Absolutely! If you are going to win you have to go into it knowing that you can, win and that you have a right to win.

Jesse Lee: Margaret, thank you for your precious time. I am pleased to hear your responses to my questions. Small businesses are an essential key to the success of our national economy. If possible, I would like to interview you again in the future as your busy schedule permits.

Margaret Jackson: Thank you, Jesse for your time as well. Sure thing, let’s do circle-back in the future.

So goes the Margaret Jackson interview. I have known Margaret for several years. I am not astonished that she has grown, matured, and prepared herself to win big. Why? I think because she does not stop working to achieve her goals. She is not afraid to dream big. She uses her intuition and ingenuity to work around problems. Plus, she surrounds herself with positive people who believe in and encourages her. You can achieve the extraordinary too; she would be first to tell you.

Do You Believe that God has a Purpose for Your Life?

Do you believe that God has a purpose assigned to your life? Do you want to impact the world? Do you need a platform to help you achieve your goals? Do you need a sister to go there with you? Sister2Sister is a faithbased women’s organization that believes in supporting, developing, and encouraging the purpose God placed in a woman’s life. Religious debate aside, are you able to answer the above questions as it pertains to your life?

Addressing these questions and more is a quest to empower women. Women are working together to advance personal assignments to have a strong effect and impact on the world.

God created all people with a purpose inside of them. Your mission goes beyond yourself, family, region, and the nations. Women are to take part in positively influencing what is known as “the seven mountains of society” sometimes referred to as pillars or spheres or shapers namely:

We believe that every woman can achieve a measure of their life’s purpose on their own. Women because of various reasons which include but not limited to upbringing, level of education, religious beliefs, geographic location, do not believe in themselves or their life’s purpose. Sister2Sister affirms women; thereby giving each other the confidence needed to impact their sphere effectively or to “occupy their mountain or sphere.” In addition to affirmation, there is a need for a positive impact on each other. It provides women with the necessary strength that is needed to do business in their spheres of influence effectively and with added confidence.

Women are taking their rightful positions in the world. In ancient Jewish history, Deborah was a Judge; she owned her own “Palm Tree of Deborah” where she used to sit under and hear community cases brought by the Children of Israel andpassed her judgments. The ancient proverbs speak of a businesswoman who bought and sold in the marketplace. She would go out and survey land and purchased real estate.

Multiply your impact as sisters through coming together and connecting using the “the multiplier effect” it ranges

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022 66
1. Education 2. Religion 3. Family 4. Business 5. Government 6. Arts/Entertainment 7. Media

from sharing of information to forming partnerships or being each other’s customers.

Sister2Sister’s goal is to impact and change the world. You do not have to be a conglomerate to impact the world; you need to know sister influencers in a different part of the world. To achieve this Sister2Sister has chapters in different parts of the world.

Connections are vital. The world is a “global village” operations in one’s sphere should be able to influence another part of the world. In Sister2Sister we open doors for each other by having sister connections in different parts of the world. With a local contact, you will know the requirements of that country. We encourage identifying and having a desire to provide needs no matter how small your business.

The Bottom Line

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022 68
SBC Magazine Winter 2022 | 69
Financial intelligence the journey of how money works, amass, secure, invest, and handle it, is the bottom line.

Understanding your FICO score.

Collections

1. If you pay a collection account, it will drop your credit score. If you want to pay a collection account that is currently on your credit report, it will drop your credit score because it makes the date of activity current. It is best to ask the collection company if they will stop reporting to the bureaus if you agree to pay the bill.

2. It does not make a difference on the FICO score if you settle the account versus paying the bill in full. If there are collection accounts to settle, do not let a mortgage credit be run. Experian has a program where they notify the collection companies if your credit has been run. If you run a mortgage credit report before you settle the collection, you will not get a good deal to settle. They know you want to purchase a home and in order to do that, you need to pay the collection.

3. Settle a collection at the end of the month, so you will get a better settlement. Collection companies have quotas they need to meet, and if you wait until the end of the month, you will pay less for the debt. If you have a collection company calling, tell them “do not contact me by phone” if they continue, you can sue them. If you have a robot calling your cell phone, that is an automatic reason to sue them also.

4. If you have one or more accounts to settle, do not let a mortgage credit be run.

Amount of Tradelines you should have: You should have four accounts in good standing to optimize credit score. It is best to have a home loan, car loan, and two credit cards. If you don’t have a home loan or a car loan, you should have four credit cards. Student loans, if not in deferment count as one of the four trade lines active on your credit report.

Credit Card Balances:

It is important to keep your credit card balances under 30% of its limit (15% is even better). If you keep your balance under 30% of the credit limit, you will receive 5 points to your FICO score, If you keep your balance under 15% of the credit limit, you will receive 15 points to your FICO score. Once you go over 50% of the credit limit, it will drop your score 18 points (per credit card).

| SBC Magazine Winter 2022 70
Republished from 2018

Inquiries:

5-9 inquiries in a two-year period will drop your score 20 points. Don’t let anyone run your credit. You can run your credit on the free websites, show that report to the person you are applying for credit and see if they can do the deal. If they can, then allow them to run your report through their company.

Don’t close credit cards:

Once you have eight years worth of credit history on your credit report, you get 40 points added to your FICO score. So don’t close credit cards. If you want to do a “transfer balance” to another credit card, that is ok, don’t close the credit card you moved the balance from. Don’t let the creditor close your account. Use your credit card once every 4 to 6 months, then pay off the balance.

Authorized User:

The authorized user still works today. Example: Mom has great credit, and she wants to help out her son. She can add him as an authorized user on her credit card, Mom’s great credit will go on the son’s report, son’s bad credit will not hop on Mom’s credit report. The authorized user works for car loans and credit cards. If you want to open a home mortgage, you need to have your own credit established.

Types of Credit Cards:

If you only have major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and American Express), you will get 16 points added to your FICO score. If you add a department store card to your credit, you will then have 27 points added to your FICO score.

Bank Accounts:

If you have a checking account, it will give you 5 points added to your FICO score, savings account gives you 10 points, if you have both, it will give you 20 points added to your FICO score.

Preparing Small Businesses for Grant Funding Competitions

Intoday’s world of uncertainties and learning to adapt to living with a pandemic, increasing operating expenses, grants have become more available to small business owners. Grant funding is a competitive process. You will compete against other small businesses for that grant money. It takes preparation and time to compete formidably for grant funding. Winging it does not work. If it is a crisis and the grant funding need is immediate, you will not compete well. Competing for grant funding under pressure, stress, and urgency is not a combination for success. If you want to compete well for grant funding, start preparing for the competition before you need the funding. Thinking it through and getting ready to compete is critical to successful grant submission. Are you ready to compete for a grant? My top five steps to get you started with grant funding competitions.

4. Learn grant language. Do your homework. Grant funding opportunities come in options and topics. For example, seed money, matching funds, research, scholarship, endowments, program development, technical assistance, and many other phrases. Be aware of the terms and language used by the grantors.

5. Hire a seasoned grant writer. Make it a collaborative effort and learn the grant writing ropes. Do not ask grant writers to write for free and pay them on the back end. Many grants will have language in the grant announcement on not using the funds to pay the grant writer. It is your responsibility. Pay the grant writer and learn the ropes.

1. Do not submit a grant unprepared. Thinking about how you want to compete in the grant process is essential. Start by creating a funding plan.

2. Assess the need. Assessing areas that need funding will help you determine an organized order of funding the goals.

3. What are your funding goals, and are they ongoing? How much money do you need to raise? Use an Excel spreadsheet to calculate each funding goal.

A great way to get your grant writing feet wet is to apply for grants that have short online applications. However, do not blaze through it like a bat out of hell, thinking it will be easy to win that $5,000 grant. Take time and think through your responses, every question matters, and every response matters. It is a competition, and you will not win them all, but you can win a lot using the best grant writing practices.

2022 Superpower Grants for Small Businesses

Grants are competitive processes; they are not taken lightly or submitted carelessly. Do your research and provide a solid response. Use your business plan as a tool to respond to the grant opportunity. The business plan is an excellent ally to growing, developing, financing, and sustaining your business. Before you apply for the grant, read the entire grant before responding. Read the requirements to determine if you qualify to apply. If not, can it be remedied to qualify? If you are not eligible, quickly move on to the next grant opportunity. Don’t miss the submission deadlines. Enough said, don’t miss it. Finding grants is similar to a treasure hunt. You have to search and hunt on the Internet to locate them. Learn from grant submission experiences; they will guide you to new grant opportunities and strengthen your responses. The grant journey is exciting and held with much anticipation of winning. If you do the work and invest, you will win some and still do the work; you will lose some. It is not a numbers game.
