ost people would either love to journey into space themselves or want to discover whether there really is something or somebody else out there. Some people believe that the International Space Station is the most important thing still to be built. Others think we should go back to the Moon to test technology for a Mars mission and launch humans toward Mars by the middle of the century.

In spring 2005, President Bush revealed his plan for sending astronauts to Mars but lots of people ask ‘Why send humans into space if robots could do the job?’ ‘Robots get smarter every day, while humans haven’t changed in 35,000 years,’ said Robert Park of the American Physical Society. He is against human space travel and argues that a smart robot could be helpful in space. This is because scientists have not worked out how humans can survive the radiation and other dangers of space long enough to get safely to Mars.

Another interesting area of space exploration is space flight that anybody can afford and take part in. This would be a dream come true for those who have ever wanted to travel in space.

Many films have looked at the idea of how space travel can become more a part of everyday life. The movie ‘2001’ has a space plane with Pan Am markings, making it look like an airplane, flying into Earth orbit and docking with a large wheeled space station. The television show ‘Star Trek’ has transporters ‘beaming people up’ or moving people thousands of miles without using a vehicle. It also has automobile-sized 68

Stars shuttlecraft that fly into space just as easily as we drive our car to the local shopping centre. The ‘Star Wars’ series of movies has both shuttlecraft and star ships taking off from planet surfaces making it look as easy as light planes taking off from a local airport. Yet here we are, many decades after the first landing on the Moon, struggling to launch the Space Shuttle six times a year at more than $500 million per flight. It is obvious from the popularity of science fiction novels and movies that many people want to achieve the dream of space travel but we lack the knowledge to make it happen.

Other ideas to help us explore the galaxy more easily involve the building of a huge space elevator.

It would act as our bridge to the rest of the Solar System and eventually the stars. Once it is built, the next step is how it will allow us to return to the Moon to stay. This will further reduce the cost of living, working, and travelling in space by allowing us to start making use of the Moon’s resources. Once the Lunar base is in place the next step will be the building of a shipyard where Satellite Solar Power Stations, Space Colonies, and Mars Exploration and Colony ships will be built.

The power needed to make these new technologies real may come in a number of ways such as solar sails, ion engines, nuclear power or antimatter. One thing is for sure, there are hundreds of ideas on how we might achieve these things – so perhaps one day, we’ll be able to see Mars for ourselves.
