Learning Log A learning log is a kind of diary. You write regularly, at least once a week. It helps you think about the topic, what you have learned and how you might work better in the future. You can write about these points: • What was the discussion or lesson about? • What was one important thing I learned today? • What helped me to learn in today’s lesson? • What didn’t I understand in the lesson? • What did I enjoy/do well in class today? • How did I work today? Keep your learning log in an exercise book or a (digital) folder.

Before reading What do you know about the Titanic? What do these words mean: waves, wire, wives, wept, swung?
Titanic Oh, they built the ship Titanic To sail the ocean blue, And they thought they had a ship That the water would never go through; But the Lord’s almighty hand, Said: That ship would never land. It was sad when that great ship went down. Chorus: It was sad, It was sad, It was sad when the great ship went down; Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives, It was sad when the great ship went down. Titanic leaves Southampton in April 1912.

They were off for England And not very far from shore, When the rich refused To associate with the poor; So they sent them down below, Where they’d be the first to go. It was sad when that great ship went down. (Chorus) The boat was about to sink, And the sides about to burst, When the captain shouted, “All women and children first!” Oh, the captain tried to wire, But the wire was on fire. It was sad when the great ship went down.

Before reading Scan the text. How many passengers could the Titanic carry?
The Ship of Dreams The Titanic was a luxury passenger liner that carried some of the world’s richest people as well as others looking for a new life in North America. The Titanic’s intended course was from Southampton, England to New York City, USA. The ship collided with an iceberg and sank on 15 April 1912. Over 1500 people died.

Did you know?
• Years before the Titanic went down, a novel was written about a ship called the Titan which did not have enough lifeboats. The ship hit an iceberg and sank. • Chief Officer Wilde wrote a letter to his sister from the Titanic that said, “I still don’t like this ship. I have a queer feeling about it.” • On sailing day, passenger Esther Hart said she would rather sit up all night than go to sleep on the Titanic because she feared something dreadful would happen. • The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in 1985.
After reading a Find Belfast on a map. Why do you think this city was important in the ship building industry? b Find the intended route of the Titanic on a map: Southampton – Cherbourg – Queenstown – New York. c What was the name of the company that built the Titanic? d What was the name of the company that owned the Titanic? e When the Titanic hit the iceberg it had a speed of 22 knots. How many kilometres per hour is this? f Find another name for the Titanic in the text. g How do you think Captain Smith felt when he understood what was going to happen? Many icebergs are the size of large buildings. Most of the iceberg is hidden underwater so they can easily damage or destroy passing ships.
Talk about it! Find out the meaning of the word titan. Why do you think they called the ship Titanic?

A Titanic Survivor How do you think the passengers on the Titanic felt the night when the great ship sank in the icy cold water? What happened before and after the ship hit the iceberg? Shelley Tanaka is an award-winning children’s author. She has written the book On Board the Titanic which tells the true story of two of the survivors, Jack Thayer and Harold Bride. This excerpt tells part of the story of Jack Thayer.
Wednesday, April 10, 1912, 10:30 a.m. Jack Thayer stared up from the pier at the gleaming black side of the Titanic. If he stretched his neck he could just see the top of one of the ship’s four huge funnels. All morning he had been listening to people talk about the world’s biggest ship. At the end of the gangway that led into the ship, a man in a green jacket offered him a white carnation. Jack was puzzled. “For your buttonhole, sir,” the steward said. Jack took the flower and tried to put it in his lapel. “Jack! Get a move on! Other people are waiting.” He turned to see his mother and father, waving him ahead. Behind them other passengers were waiting to get on board.

STOP THINK
Is there anything in the text that warns us about the catastrophe?
Sunday, April 14, 1912, 6:00 p.m. The sun warmed Jack’s face as he gazed over the railing at the calm, blue Atlantic. His mother and Mrs Widener sat in deck chairs beside him, their legs wrapped in green blankets. After four days, Jack felt that he had finally explored the whole ship. He had been in the pool every day and had even tried out the Turkish bath. He had played squash. He had eaten two desserts at every meal. Mrs Thayer tucked her blanket around her knees. “Brrr. It’s getting very cold.” Jack saw that Mr Ismay, the president of the White Star Line, the company which owned the Titanic, had joined them. “As a matter of fact, the captain handed me a telegram earlier,” Mr Ismay said. “We’re near ice.” He took a piece of paper out of his pocket and waved it at the ladies. “We should reach it this evening.” “Ice in April?” Jack asked. “Does this mean we won’t arrive in New York on schedule?” “Not at all,” Mr Ismay said. “We’re making excellent time. A record run yesterday. We’re going to start up some new boilers this evening. In fact, I expect we’ll reach New York early and surprise everyone.”
Sunday, April 14, 1912, 11:30 p.m. Inside his stateroom, Jack pulled on his pajamas. Jack wound his watch. It was 11.40 p.m. He pulled down the crisp white sheets of his bed and turned out the light. Just as he began to climb into bed, the ship swayed slightly. The movement was so small that Jack almost thought he had imagined it. Then the engines stopped. Then he heard running footsteps and muffled voices out in the hallway. 18
