My Turn It’s my turn to tidy up the classroom. Not exactly my favourite job. This is no fun. Now, what’s this? A schoolbag! Rami’s of course. And all his homework is in it. Just like Rami. He always forgets things. Look at this. Balls of paper on the floor. Mason throws them at Addison. I think he likes her, but she always gets mad at him. An open desk. That’s Saniyah. Always in a hurry. She never puts her chair on her desk. Pencils and a ruler on the floor! That’s Chang! He drops things all the time. What’s this on Norah’s chair? Oh gross! A squashed banana. Yuck! No, I’m not doing this. She can throw this out herself. Now, one more thing. I must tidy the books on the bookshelf. Hey, there’s a letter here with a big red heart on it. And my name in the middle!! Someone likes me. But who? You know, tidying the classroom is not so bad. It’s more fun than tidying my bedroom.

Hockey Crazy A hockey star in the NHL. That’s what I want to be when I grow up. I’m Emily and I love hockey, it’s the best sport ever. You must be a good skater and you must be really fast. And tough, too. I’ve got hockey practice four days a week. My cousin Lucy plays hockey, too. Her team is the best girl’s team in the whole state of Tennessee. I collect NHL player cards. But I want to sell them now. They cost a lot of money to buy. Too much, I think. I want to buy a new hockey stick instead.

I also like soccer. It’s my second favorite sport. In other countries people call it football. In America we already have a sport called football so that’s why we call it soccer. I play defence. So my job is to tackle anyone who gets close to the goal. It’s a lot of fun but I do get lots of bruises on my legs and ankles. I play in the school team and we’re ok. Not good, but ok. We win about half our games. It’s nice to win but I don’t mind too much when we lose. I just love running around, kicking the ball and tackling people. When I do a good tackle and get the ball to a teammate, that’s a fantastic feeling. I’ve never scored a goal because I play at the back. But I bet that feels good, too!

Halloween – Dressing Up Halloween evening. I have loads of candy in the house for all the local kids who knock. I don’t want toilet roll in my trees or eggs on my windows! A knock. I open the door. It’s a kid dressed in a black cloak with tomato ketchup on his face. I put candy in his bucket. “And what are you tonight?” I ask. “I’m Dracula,” he says. I laugh and close the door.

I put candy in her bucket. “And what are you tonight?” I ask. “I’m Robin Hood,” she says. I laugh and close the door. Another knock. But this is different. Slow. Hard. Bang. Bang. Bang! I open the door. There are four kids in jeans and white T-shirts. Normal clothes. But the kids look weird. Their skin looks old, their hair is white. I look at their eyes. Not blue. Not brown. Their eyes are red. Red like blood. I am holding the candy in my hand, but they do not have any buckets. My heart is beating fast. “Don’t you have buckets for candy?” I ask. The weird kids don’t say anything. They just stare at me with their blood red eyes. I take a step back. “Don’t you…. don’t you like candy?” I try and smile. I can’t. And then I nearly scream. One of the kids opens her mouth and I see she has small sharp black teeth and her tongue is grey. “No,” she says. “We don’t like candy.” I take another step back. I am freaking out. I must say something. Anything. “And what are you tonight?” I say in a small voice. The kids all take a step towards me. The girl opens her eyes wider. No white, no other colour. Just blood red. She opens her mouth wider, her grey tongue dancing over hundreds of sharp, black teeth. “We’re children,” she whispers.

From California to Iowa Hello! My name is Chandler and I live in LA, California. People from all over the world live in California. My friends come from: Korea, Japan, The Philippines, Mexico, and of course, from all over USA. There are people and cars everywhere in LA! It is a large, noisy, hot city. In the summer the temperature can be 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I am glad I live in Santa Monica…Santa Monica is on the coast, and at the weekend I often go down to the beach with my friends to swim in the ocean, or we go and buy ice-cream on the famous Santa Monica Pier. The wooden pier goes far out into the Pacific Ocean and we stand at the end and watch the waves. My father comes from Iowa so every year our family flies from California, to spend a week with Granma and Pops in Iowa. Sometimes I think Iowa is like another country, not another state. There are not so many people from other countries there, and there is no ocean. All the people in the town know each other and when someone who looks different comes here, everyone notices them. Sometimes I think everything looks the same here: the people, the fields… I miss all the variety that we have in LA. Granma and Pops live on a corn farm. It is flat and all you can see is fields, fields and a tractor or two. It is so quiet. I love Granma and Pops, but there isn’t much to do on their farm. After 3 days I want to go back to my friends in LA. At Christmas, Grandma and Pops come to Santa Monica to be with us for a week. I like that, but Granma thinks our city is too noisy and wants to get back to the farm. I guess home is best!
