Animals Cats
There are many, many kinds of cats in the world. Some are tame and some are wild. All cats, except the cheetah, can pull in their claws. Here are a few interesting facts about five special cats. The black-footed cat lives in Africa. It is the smallest wild cat in the world and it weighs only about two kilos. The black-footed cat is a desert cat and it can live without drinking water. It gets the water it needs from the food.

The Siberian tiger is the biggest cat animal in the world. It can weigh up to 200 kilos. A tiger can hear very well and it can see six times better than a human in the dark. Many tigers like water. They are strong swimmers and love to bathe in pools and lakes. They hunt fish too.

The cheetah is easy to recognize because it has spots under its eyes that look like teardrops. The cheetah is the fastest animal on earth. It can run at more than 110 kilometres an hour – as fast as a car on the motorway. The cheetah’s whole body is built to run. It has long legs and even the tail helps the cheetah to run fast. The tail works like a rudder and helps the cheetah to turn quickly when it runs. Only one foot at a time touches the ground when the cheetah runs. It flies through the air. Isn’t that amazing?

Black Jackets and a Pink Coat I grew up in the south of England. When I was 13 I lived in Southend. Southend is a seaside town very near to London. There were lots of gangs. I was in a gang called the Goths. We dyed our hair black and spiked it. We wore black clothes and eyeliner. We had lots of tattoos, earrings and studs. Our gang enemies were the Skinheads and the Casuals. Our gang friends were the Punks. There were lots of fights. One day, an old lady from our church came to see us. She was frightened. She talked to my mum. The old lady was afraid to walk home because she had seen a big group of young men on the street. She said they looked like criminals. Mum asked me to walk the lady home. Mum: Andy: Mrs Humby: Andy: Mrs Humby:

Andy, can you walk her home? Sure. Where do you live? Just past the post office. Okay. You’re a nice young man. Not like those yobbos on the street.

We had strange names in my gang. Mrs Humby: Why are your clothes so strange? We didn’t understand her question. She was wearing a big hat, a yellow scarf and a long pink coat.

December Santa Claus Is Coming The good news Here is the good news. Santa Claus is just like you think. He is fat. He has a white beard. He wears red clothes. He drives a sleigh pulled by nine reindeer. He laughs a lot and he brings you presents. So far, so good.

Santa Claus is a very successful invention. He is famous all over the world. Even people who don’t celebrate Christmas know who Santa is.

Sinter Klaas People who came from Holland to America in the 17th century brought the legend of Sinter Klaas. He was a saint that protected sailors, defended children and gave gifts to poor people. In 1823 an American poet wrote a poem called The Night before Christmas. In the poem Sinter Klaas is called Santa Claus. He is just like we see him on TV. He has a red suit, a white beard and reindeer. So Santa Claus was born in 1823.

December Santa Claus around the world In England Santa Claus is called Father Christmas. He can read smoke so children throw their Christmas lists on the fire. Then they hang their stockings by the fireplace and Father Christmas puts gifts in them. English children put a carrot next to the fire for Rudolf – the red-nosed reindeer.
In Russia Santa is called Ded Moroz. It means Grandfather Frost. He doesn’t bring any presents. An old woman called Babushka brings presents on January 6th. That is the day when the Three Kings brought gifts to the baby Jesus.
In China Santa is called Shengdan Laoren.
In Morocco Santa is sometimes called Black Peter.
In Japan kids sometimes call Santa Claus Santa no ojisan. It means Uncle Santa.

In Chile December is a summer month. Santa is called Papá Noel or Viejo Pascuero. He comes at midnight on Christmas Eve when everyone is asleep. He puts gifts under the Christmas tree. The kids find them there in the morning. GOOD STUFF
