Introduction 4.6 billion years ago the Earth was born. It started off as a large ball of gases, then became a big fire ball, then a ball of rock and magma. The surface cooled and it became hard.

For thousands of years the Earth was bombarded with meteorites. Volcanoes were active and shaped the Earth into what it is today.

The first sign of life on Earth is about 3.6 billion years old. After many years the oceans and the first real land continent called Pangea were created. Pangea is today our seven continents.

But it took a long time before our forefathers came.

It happened in the African savanna about 100,000 to 200,000 years ago. Then they moved to the Old world (Europe) and after that Oceania F 40,000 years ago, and finally the Americas F 10,000 years ago.

The spaceship flew along Oxford Street F, turned right and passed Piccadilly Circus F. Then it headed for Trafalgar Square F and the Houses of Parliament F. Captain Restrich and Pilot Naftafs landed softly on a funny-looking green area next to a large building on the river. The intergalactic transformer told them that this was Parliament Park and “the very big green jungle was a lawn and the enormous skyscraper-like poles with green parts at the top were trees”.

Unfortunately it forgot to inform the two Grangians about dogs …

Every morning Mrs Emma Beale took her little poodle, Miss Universe, for a walk – as she did this morning. When they came to the end of Parliament Park, the dog ran like mad towards one corner of the park. It sniffed at something, opened its mouth and then swallowed it.

The Great Southern Railway train has passed Broken Hill a long time ago and is well into New South Wales F. The train is on time and she will be in Sydney within nine minutes – in time for the Australian Games.

For the last eleven hours and fifty-two minutes Professor Hugh Peterson, the Nobel Prize winner for Medicine, has been sitting on the coach between Melbourne and Sydney on Route 2. He is to attend a conference, where he will talk about a new vaccine that will save thousands of lives all over the world.

He has left his wife and his beautiful garden for two days and he is already longing for them. The last year or so he has started spending more time at home. He is getting older and he wants to enjoy life, although his research means a lot to him.

“Edmonton Police Station, Officer Ralston. Can I help you? …

A bomb? Where? It’ll go off in seven minutes? Can I have your name, please? Come on, who are you? Hallo! He hung up! He said something about revenge. Sergeant Whyte! Track the call!

Speed it up! He sounded serious.”

Dave Edison is writing some new lyrics on a piece of paper.

He has this wonderful idea about a song. ‘Love is like an open horizon. There’s no beginning, there’s no ending.’

Sarah Costello finds an article about Norway in her magazine. ‘Imagine, going to that beautiful country.’

Hugh Peterson is thinking about his new-born granddaughter in Perth. What a marvellous little child, perfect fingers and brown hair. And those cute little eyes. How wonderful life is!’

The Great Southern Railway train has passed Broken Hill a long time ago and is well into New South Wales F. Sarah Costello, member of the world champion team in the Women’s 4 x 100 Metre Freestyle Relay, is reading a magazine in her comfortable seat.
