CHAPTER

From nobody to somebody

Elvis Presley is one of the most famous American singers of the 20th century. He was born on January 8th, 1935. Elvis said about himself that he was ‘just a poor boy from Memphis’, the town in Tennessee in the American South where he grew up. When Elvis got out of high school he was driving a truck by day and working in nightclubs by night.

5

Elvis was one of those who started rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s. People called him the King of rock ‘n’ roll. He had 107 records in the charts and 18 of them became number one hits. Hits like Heartbreak Hotel and Jailhouse Rock became very famous in America and the rest of the world.

10

Elvis’s lifestyle was very hard, for example he could sleep all day and party all night. Not many people know that Elvis was a karate expert – he was a black belt! 15

20

But what was Elvis Presley like as a person? He didn’t like to be alone since he was very sociable and always wanted to have people around him. He was also very generous to his friends and his family. For example, he gave a brand new pink Cadillac to his mother. When Lisa Marie, his daughter, was 8 years old, he gave her a mink coat and an expensive diamond ring.

Graceland was his luxury home in Memphis, Tennessee, built in the 1930s. Some of the rooms at Graceland were painted black, as Elvis liked dark colors. 25

30

Elvis loved peanut butter and banana sandwiches fried in butter, and he had his fridge filled with junk food. His eating habits were very bad and he took drugs which gave him problems later on in life. His life ended tragically when he was only 42 years old. When he died in August of 1977, he left 300 million dollars to his only child Lisa Marie.

CHAPTER But then things started to go wrong, didn’t they? Yeah, that’s right. You see, I like gambling. I went to Las Vegas and lost more than a million dollars in just four days. It’s like I went mad. Didn’t anyone try to stop you? Yes, but I didn’t want to listen.

So how much money do you have left now? Nothing, absolutely nothing. The bank took my house and I sold my cars. I had to pay my debts. Where do you live now? I’m homeless again. I’m back at my friends’ house on the couch. But I’m not jobless. I’ve actually got my old job back. I’m a waiter again.

Did you get it? True or false?

From Rags to Riches David Wright won £3 millon on the lottery. What did he do with the money and how did the big win change his life? You were working as a waiter at a pizzeria, is that right? Yeah, that’s right. The money wasn’t very good but I quite liked the job. I couldn’t afford a place of my own. I was homeless and I was staying with two friends and I slept on their couch in the living room. Then one day you bought a lottery ticket, didn’t you? Yes, I did. The thing was that every week I spent two or three pounds and watched the lottery show on Saturday night. Suddenly your numbers came up! How did you feel at that moment? When the first three were the same as mine I thought ‘ooh, good’. And then all six came up. I felt sick. I had won big.

When the money was gone, he went back to the life he had before.

How much did you win? I won three million pounds! It was fantastic, I was so excited. How did you spend the money? Fun, fun, fun! I went to Bermuda, Hawaii, Thailand and Australia. I took some friends with me and we lived like kings. We travelled first class everywhere and I paid for everyone, of course. I also bought a big house for myself in central London, and a house for my parents on the south coast, and a cottage in Scotland for my sister. Did you buy anything else? CHAPTER

Who wants to be famous?

Dad I just don’t get it. People get rich and famous just by playing football. Josh You mean football legends like Messi or Mbappé? Dad That’s exactly what I mean. It makes me sick. They are just kicking a ball. Anyone can do that. Josh Don’t you want to be famous, Dad? Dad No way! Unless I did something great – like found a cure for diseases like cancer or malaria or did something good for the environment. But I don’t want to be famous for football. Josh It must be great, though, to have no money worries. Dad Yeah, perhaps, but too much money brings more problems. Josh Like what? Dad Like wasting your money on luxury cars, getting hooked on drugs, buying lottery tickets or becoming an alcoholic. Oh come on, Dad. You’re just jealous. Josh Dad Me? Jealous? No way! Come on then, young Messi. Let me take you to the football training … You can buy me a new car when you become a pro.

Amanda It’s so unfair – people get rich and famous just by being on telly for a few weeks. You mean all those reality shows? Josh Amanda Yeah. A few weeks in the jungle or locked up in some stupid house … Josh … and suddenly everyone wants to be one of them. Amanda I wouldn’t say no to the money. But fame? The papers write lots of bad stuff about you. And you’re all over the internet. Josh That’s true. They dig up your past and tell the whole world. Amanda That must be awful. Josh Amanda! Look at that limo! Isn’t that … yes it’s HER! You know, she’s the star on that new reality show. Can’t remember her name but I’m sure it’s her. Amanda Yes, you’re right. It’s HER. Oh my God! We must get her autograph. Have you got a piece of paper? Josh Never mind! She can write on the back of my hand. I’ll never wash it again! Quick! Before she goes into the studio. I can’t believe it’s HER.
