My Dream
ALBERT: Hey Malik, do we have any homework for tomorrow?
MALIK: Of course we have! Do you want to know what it is?
ALBERT: Sure. That would be useful.
MALIK: We’ve got Maths and French.
ALBERT: How do you work with your French, Malik?
MALIK: Well, I need to practise pronunciation and spelling so I use the online book a lot. I imitate and say after. There are many word and spelling exercises there and I can even record my voice and then press play and compare it with the correct answer!
ALBERT: Wow, I’ve never tried that! That’s what I’ll do tonight then.
MALIK: But how come Al, you can never remember what homework we have?
ALBERT: I guess I have this dream of a week without having anything to do.
MALIK: That’s a great dream!

When I Study
Harry
When I study I always use my computer. That works for me.
Kylie
When I study French, I always listen to French songs. That helps me remember how to say the words.
Kate
I like to use a pencil and paper when I study. I bought a notebook in New York City and I use it in English.
Gopal I always study with a friend. We go through our homework together. Schoolwork is a lot more fun if you can do it with a friend!

Jen Has Changed Schools
Back in school!
Fall is here and I miss my friend Jenny. This year we were allowed to change schools if we wanted to, so Jenny decided to go to a music school.
We don’t live near each other, so I don’t get to see her after school either. We chat and try to get together at weekends. But it’s hard, really hard to stay friends with someone you don’t see every day. I miss U Jen!!!
But I also have some new friends.
I met Gopal in New York City. He’s from India.
I also met Kylie from Australia and Harry from England.
I have them all on Facebook.

An Icon of Mine
Kate really admires Wangari Maathai, an activist from Kenya who started the Green Belt Movement with some friends. Here is her story.
Once upon a time there was a young woman called Wangari, who worked as a teacher in Kenya.
She heard the women from the farms in her village complain that they didn’t have enough water. Then she heard the women talk about how they had to walk for miles to collect firewood so they could cook meals for their families.
Wangari knew that she had to do something, so she set up a meeting with the women from the village.
“We need trees to stop the water from disappearing.” Wangari said.
The women started planting trees and the movement grew.
Wangari Maathai’s idea resulted in The Green Belt Movement. Over forty million trees were planted and Wangari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. How did she celebrate? By planting a tree of course!

Life was good, and everybody in the country was happy.
Good Sir Bowen and all his kings, princes and knights before him were Knights of the Old Code. Sir Bowen wanted to make Prince Einon a good fighter and wanted to teach him the Old Code.

And my brain doesn’t work –it doesn’t work at all. Because all of a sudden I hear myself saying “YES”. For some weird reason, in between dizziness and butterflies, I say “YES”. Me, Nia, who never plays basketball. I never have and never will!
And another thing, on Saturday I have my super important street dance competition. I wandered off in thoughts. Why would Josh ask ME if I played basketball?
“See you on Saturday, then!” Josh said.
A few hours later, we had our weekly Geography lesson together. Our teacher put us in groups and guess who ended up sitting next to me? Yes, you’re right. Josh. He gave me a quick smile and all I wanted to do was to tell the truth and confess to the fact that I don’t play basketball. But Josh didn’t mention the game on Saturday.

The next morning, I told my father I was feeling sick and couldn’t go to school. No more weird Josh meetings for me. But dad didn’t buy that lie. No way! He pushed me out of the house and off I went and, of course, the first person I met when I got to school was Josh. He looked a bit pale and asked if I’d heard that the basketball game on Saturday had been cancelled. He kept on talking, telling me that he had to find another sport event to write about. He seemed a bit off.
