surprise

Meanwhile, back in England, Yoshi and Vega are at a sleepover at Kat’s house. They are in Kat’s bedroom.

Yoshi can see the dark shapes of clouds through the round window of the room. The lights are off and it’s dark and spooky inside. The only light comes from Kat’s torch. She puts the torch under her chin, which makes her face look like a scary mask. Yoshi smiles nervously.

“Is everyone comfortable?” Kat asks.

“Then let me begin!” she says slowly and in a deep voice.

Hide and seek

I’m behind you!

“The brother went into the study. The strange noise was coming from the wardrobe. ‘Out you come!’ he said. ‘But I’m right behind you!’ the little brother replied.

“The scratching from inside the wardrobe continued. Terrified, the older brother slowly started to open the wardrobe door when …”

Suddenly, the light comes on in Kat’s room. “Why are you sitting in the dark?” Kat’s mum gives them each a mug of hot chocolate.

“You scared the living daylights out of us!” Kat says.

When Kat’s mum leaves, Vega says, “What happens next?

You can’t finish the story on a cliffhanger!”

Just then, they hear a tap-tap-tapping on the window and see a dark hand with long fingers. All three children are trembling.

“What’s that?” Yoshi asks.

Kat laughs nervously. “It’s just the branch of a tree – isn’t it?”

“It was a dark and stormy night. The wind was whistling through the trees and …” Yoshi too can hear the wind moaning outside.

He shivers slightly as Kat tells the ghost story. “… the two brothers were at home alone while their parents visited the next-door neighbours. The boys were bored, so they decided to play hide-and-seek. ‘I’ll count to fifty!’ the older brother said. ‘You hide.’

“The brother counted quickly and when he got to fifty, he went looking for his little brother. He searched all the usual places: under the beds, behind the curtains and sofa, and in the bathtub.

He couldn’t find his brother anywhere.

What’s that noise?

“The house was unusually quiet. The big brother hummed loudly to himself because the deep silence of the house scared him.

He decided to go downstairs and look in all the rooms again.

“Just then, he heard a noise. It was the sound of long nails scratching at a door. By now, he was shaking like a leaf.”

“Me too!” Yoshi whispers. “Shh! I’m enjoying the story,” Vega says.

“What happens next, Kat?”

I met Fiona, dressed in bright colours, in one of her favourite cafés. She said she always wears colourful clothes because ‘the world needs cheering up.’

As she sipped her coffee, she told me that she had been a teacher for more than 15 years before coming to Sweden. She taught English as a Foreign Language in countries like China, Australia, Spain and her home country, England.

After some more chit-chat, it was time to get down to my interview.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Writing is something I’ve always loved – ever since I was a child. I used to write very long letters (think 15 pages long!) to my grandmother when I was at school. My handwriting was very bad, so I’m not sure she could read everything I wrote!

How did you become a writer?

I wrote a TV series for China’s educational TV channel when I was a teacher over there. When I got back to England, I invented a boardgame and a Swedish publishing company saw the game and got in touch with me. When I moved to Sweden, I continued writing textbooks and also got a day job as a writer.

Where do you get your best ideas?

I get my best ideas when I’m out walking in the woods with my two dogs.

Well, it’s very relaxing to walk in the woods and just connect with nature. It’s when I stop thinking about what I have to do that I empty my mind and leave room for new ideas. Then I have to run home and write my ideas down before they all disappear!

Where do you write – and when?

I usually write at the weekends when I have a lot more energy. I go into my study with a steaming cup of tea, put on some music and then I’m ready to write.

What is your motto in life? And why?

Oh, that’s a good question! My motto is: ‘It’s good to make mistakes!’ The more mistakes we make, the better – because that means we’re learning about life. There’s too much emphasis on being perfect nowadays. Life would be a lot better if we could all embrace our mistakes and learn from them.

Can you give our readers some writing tips?

Yes – write, write and write some more! Write whatever you want – and don’t give up! And read as much as you can because then you can see how good writers write.

And, finally, what is your favourite word and why?

My favourite word is serendipity, which means happy discovery. I like it because it’s such a positive word.

THE POWER TO TELL A STORY

The old house sat on the top of the hill like an ugly toad – with filthy windows for eyes, and a large black door that looked like a terrible mouth.

The big garden was full of strange trees with twisted branches. When it got dark, the trees looked like witches, waiting to drag passers-by into their terrible embrace. The house had an air of mystery, of something dark and rotten.

At the bottom of the hill, things were different. A huge moving van was parked outside a pretty cottage. The air was crisp and bright, and the colourful leaves on the trees looked like merry flags.

“I’ve finished unpacking!” Darius said excitedly. “I’m going to explore the new neighbourhood.” Off he cycled, his black coat flapping behind him like a bat’s wing. His mother smiled sadly.

After Darius’s dad died, it was just her and Darius.

Time passed – and Darius found it difficult to make new friends. So, as autumn turned into winter, he felt more and more alone.

One gloomy day, he decided to walk up the hill. He was very lonely. “If only I had some friends!” he thought. Just then, r g e t Don’t fo he heard laughter coming from the abandoned garden of the old house. Two dark-haired girls were chasing each other.

“Hey, you! Come and play with us!” they shouted. Darius did not have anything else to do, so he joined them.

He played outside with his new friends almost every day.

He was not lonely anymore.

One evening, he got home late. His mum was furious.

“Mrs. McCormack from next door says you’ve been playing by yourself up at the old house.” “But I haven’t been by myself,” Darius replied. “I don’t want to hear it!” Mum yelled. “I forbid you to go back there.”

The next evening, when Mum got home from work, the cottage was empty. There was no sign of Darius – just a note. “I’m with my friends.” Frantically, Mum ran outside shouting Darius’s name.

“I hope he doesn’t go inside that old house,” Mrs. Mc Cormack whispered. “The two girls who lived in your house before you moved in … They went inside – and were never seen again.”

As Mum desperately ran up the hill, the front door opened.

Two children with dead eyes smiled at Darius. He took their cold hands and stepped inside.

THE POWER TO TELL A STORY

The old house sat on the top of the hill like an ugly toad – with filthy windows for eyes, and a large black door that looked like a terrible mouth.

The big garden was full of strange trees with twisted branches. When it got dark, the trees looked like witches, waiting to drag passers-by into their terrible embrace. The house had an air of mystery, of something dark and rotten.

At the bottom of the hill, things were different. A huge moving van was parked outside a pretty cottage. The air was crisp and bright, and the colourful leaves on the trees looked like merry flags.

“I’ve finished unpacking!” Darius said excitedly. “I’m going to explore the new neighbourhood.” Off he cycled, his black coat flapping behind him like a bat’s wing. His mother smiled sadly.

After Darius’s dad died, it was just her and Darius.

Time passed – and Darius found it difficult to make new friends. So, as autumn turned into winter, he felt more and more alone.

One gloomy day, he decided to walk up the hill. He was very lonely. “If only I had some friends!” he thought. Just then, r g e t Don’t fo he heard laughter coming from the abandoned garden of the old house. Two dark-haired girls were chasing each other.

“Hey, you! Come and play with us!” they shouted. Darius did not have anything else to do, so he joined them.

He played outside with his new friends almost every day.

He was not lonely anymore.

One evening, he got home late. His mum was furious.

“Mrs. McCormack from next door says you’ve been playing by yourself up at the old house.” “But I haven’t been by myself,” Darius replied. “I don’t want to hear it!” Mum yelled. “I forbid you to go back there.”

The next evening, when Mum got home from work, the cottage was empty. There was no sign of Darius – just a note. “I’m with my friends.” Frantically, Mum ran outside shouting Darius’s name.

“I hope he doesn’t go inside that old house,” Mrs. Mc Cormack whispered. “The two girls who lived in your house before you moved in … They went inside – and were never seen again.”

As Mum desperately ran up the hill, the front door opened.

Two children with dead eyes smiled at Darius. He took their cold hands and stepped inside.
