I boken finns 3 blueslåtar, 2 jazzstycken, 3 ballader (varav en countryinspirerad), en samba och en reggae/poplåt. Styckena är avsedda att framföras antingen som solostycken utan bakgrundsmusik eller som uppvisningsstycken tillsammans med CD:n.

Det innebär en svårighet att spela exakt i tempo tillsammans med CD:n, men när man väl övervunnit denna svårighet är det roligt att spela tillsammans med ett proffsigt komp, och det ökar pulskänslan.

När man lär sig de snabbare låtarna kan det löna sig att använda metronom och börja i ett lugnt tempo för att sedan successivt öka det.

De flesta av styckena är skrivna i stilarter där improvisation ofta är en naturlig del av framförandet. Känn dig därför helt fri att möblera om bland noterna efter tycke och smak. För att veta vad som passar att spela kan det hjälpa att tillsammans med lärare analysera ackorden till låtarna, kolla in lite skalor och licks och givetvis att lyssna till så mycket annan musik som möjligt. Man lär sig massor på att lyssna, och ännu mer på att försöka planka det man hör.

Naturligtvis går det utmärkt att spela styckena exakt så som de är skrivna, improvisation är inte alls nödvändigt. Dessutom vill jag tillägga att fingersättningarna bara är förslag.

Welcome to Piano Passion!

In this book you will find 3 blues tunes, 2 jazz tunes, 3 ballads (one of which is in country/western style), one samba and one reggae/pop song.

The pieces are meant to be performed either as solo pieces without the CD or as concert pieces together with the CD. Of course playing strictly in time with the CD isn’t that easy to begin with, but once this is overcome it is a lot of fun to play along with professional accompaniment. It also enhances the feeling for the beat.

When learning the faster songs it may be helpful to use a metronome, star­ ting at a slow speed and gradually increasing the tempo. Most of the pieces are written in styles where improvisation can be a natural part of the per­ formance. Therefore you can feel completely free to rearrange the notes the way you want them. To know what might be suitable it would be help­ ful to analyse the chords together with a teacher, check out some scales and licks, and of course, to listen to as much music as possible. You learn a lot from listening, and even more from copying what you hear. Of course it is perfectly possible to play the pieces exactly the way they are written, improvisation is not at all necessary. I also would like to add that the fing­ erings are only suggestions.

Get a Grip

En kort glad blues. Det kan vara bra att öva vänsterhandskompfiguren separat och nöta in den tills den nästan går av sig själv. Om rytmen i takt 16 och motsvarande ställer till problem så föreslår jag att du övar in partiet enligt anvisningarna i texten om Sophie’s Samba.

A short joyful blues. It might be a good idea to practice the left hand accompani­ ment figure separately until it becomes second nature. If the rhythm in bar 16 (and similar) is a problem I suggest you learn this using the instructions from the text about Sophie’s Samba.

Swing it Sister

En jazzlåt där man övar legatospel i vänsterhandens walking bass i kombination med rytmiska ackord i höger hand.

A jazz song where you will practice legato in the left hand walking bass along with rhythmically accentuated chords in the right.

Bluesy Bear

Som namnet säger är detta också en blues, denna gång i ett något lugnare tempo.

Terserna i 2:a, 4:e, 6:e o.s.v. takten föredrar jag själv att spela med båda händerna, men det går naturligtvis också att använda endast högerhanden. Fördelen med att spela dem med båda händerna är att man övar både koordinationen mellan händerna och att flytta vänsterhanden snabbt från och till sin ursprungsposition.

As you can tell from the name this is also a blues, this time in a slightly calmer tempo. I personally play the thirds in bars two, four, six and so on with both hands, but of course it is quite possible to do it with the right hand only. Playing the thirds with two hands improves the coordination of the hands and also helps practising ra­ pid movement to and from different hand positions with the left hand.

Country Call

En stillsam countrylåt/ballad där det gäller att hålla ned tempot, det är lätt att öka!

A tranquil country ballad where it is important to keep the tempo down, don’t be tempted to rush!

Ebony Echoes

I denna ballad används nästan uteslutande de svarta tangenterna. Först verkar den kanske svår att läsa på grund av alla sina b-förtecken men skenet bedrar. Det kan vara bra att öva ackorden för sig och högerhandens ”droppar” för sig. En teknik som är mycket effektiv vid inlärning av svåra hopp på piano som här högerhandens oktavhopp är att öva dem och blunda samtidigt.

In this ballad you play the black keys almost exclusively. Maybe it looks hard at first because of all the flats, but the looks in this case are deceptive. It may be a good idea to practice the chords and the right hand “drops” separately. A technique which is most effective for learning jumps like these is to practice with your eyes closed.

Giant Grip

En längre version av bluesen Get a Grip. Slutet (från takt 38) går i halvtempo, och spelar man stycket utan CD kan man gärna göra ett litet ritardando i de sista takterna.

A longer version of the blues Get a Grip. The end (from bar 38) is in half time, and if played without the CD it works well to put a ritardando in the last few bars.

Rainy Romance

ID A

En vacker, vemodig ballad. Du får lättare in rytmen om du lär dig känna sextondelsunderdelning. Melodin ligger här i vänster hand i a-delen, och tas över av höger i bdelen för att sedan återgå till vänsterhanden.

A beautiful melancholic ballad. The rhythm can be considerably helped by feeling the semiquavers (sixteenth notes). The melody starts out in the left hand, then goes to right and then returns to the left.

Roaring Roundabout

En låt baserad på den välkända rundgången C-Am-F-G som väl alla kommer i kontakt med som spelar piano. Här i glad reggae/pop-tappning.

A song based on the very well known chord progression C-Am-F-G which every budding pianist has probably come in contact with, used here in a joyful reggae/pop rendering.

Spy Story

En kort spännande jazzlåt (egentligen en moll-blues), där vänsterhanden smyger fram i legato.

A short action-packed jazz tune, where the legato left hand progresses sneakily.

Sophie’s Samba

Här, liksom i Rainy Romance kan det löna sig att i början räkna sextondelar och att bryta ned den rytmiska svårigheten på följande vis: Börja med att spela de första fyra sextondelarna. Det är lätt, även med båda händerna. Lägg sedan till slag två i vänster hand. Fortfarande lätt. Spela sedan med båda händerna t.o.m. sista sextondelen i slag två. När väl det fungerar är det bara att lägga till de två sista slagen i vänster hand, (slag tre och fyra i takten). Plötsligt funkar hela den rytmiskt till synes svåra takten. Det är lite som att cykla! Fortsätt sedan likadant. När man väl kan spela stycket utan att komma av sig så kan det ge en extra krydda åt svänget att betona de andra och fjärde slagen i vänster hand.

Here as well as in Rainy Romance it will pay dividends to begin by counting the semiquavers and to break down the rhythmical difficulties in the following way: Start with the first four semiquavers and play them in time. It is easy, also with both hands. Then add the second beat in the left hand. Still easy. Then play up until the last semiquaver of the second beat. When this works it is time to add the last two beats of the bar in the left hand (beats three and four). Now the whole, seemingly difficult, bar works. It’s a bit like riding a bike. Then continue in the same way.

When able to play the whole piece through it can add some extra spice to the groove to stress the second and the fourth beats of the bar in the left hand.
