A year with Minna

5

Farringdon Farm outside Brighton, England It is an early summer morning in July when Minna first opens her eyes. Minna is a barn swallow and she is very hungry. Her dad comes in with his mouth full of insects and Minna eats them all. She must learn to fly very soon. Every autumn the swallows go to South Africa. Minna leaves The swallows leave England in October, when the days get colder. When it is cold, it is difficult to find food. Minna and her family fly all day and rest at night. When they get thirsty, they fly along a river and scoop up water.

In Africa During the first days in November the swallows arrive in Africa. Two to three weeks later they reach their winter home in Natal – if they are lucky ... Minna likes South Africa. It is easy to find food there and the days are warm and sunny. Time to go home After four months in Natal it is time to go home again. In March Minna leaves South Africa, but only with her mum and her brothers. Their dad is already back in England. He needs to fi x their nest. Home again It is early May when Minna flies in over Brighton and she can soon see Farringdon Farm. She is tired and hungry, but happy!

S WA L L O WS | FA C T S You can find swallows almost everywhere in the world. The female lays 3 to 5 eggs in early spring. The chicks open their eyes after 10 days. They can start to fly three weeks later.

30–40 kms/hour

The swallows fly at 30 to 40 kms/h but some swallows can fly faster. A swallow lives on insects. It catches them in the air. Not all swallows reach their winter home. Many die on the way.

An Australian Story

Hot Christmas Hi, I’m Elke. My granny lives in Australia and I’m here for Christmas.

In the afternoon There he is, outside the window, that cute teddy bear. Well, he looks like a teddy bear but he isn’t, of course. He’s a koala. He does nothing, just sits there in that tree. It’s amazing he’s still there after three days. He looks at me and I look back at him. Today is Christmas Eve and soon it’s time for the barbecue. We’d like to sit outside when the sun goes down, but it’s still hot. It’s 37 degrees here in McLaren Vale, so I’ll stay inside, Teddy. Hope to see you again tomorrow.

Next morning Christmas Day and nobody else is awake. The Christmas stocking is full of presents and I can’t wait to open them.

5

10

I’m hungry. Now, what’s in the fridge? Oh, there’s the turkey and the Christmas pudding, but that’s for tonight. I think I’ll have some toast and cold milk.

I look out the window and the koala’s still there. Maybe he likes the cool morning. Only 20 degrees now. Merry Christmas, Teddy! But whose hat is he wearing?

I’m hungry and really thirsty. I’d like a cup of hot chocolate, two eggs, cereal and milk and a big glass of orange juice. Rachel! This is not a restaurant. And no milk left, I’m afraid. Shops don’t open until nine on a Sunday, you know. Sunday? Eight o’clock? Oh no! Good night! Sleep well. Only four hours to lunch, Rachel! THIRTY-THREE

When Becky Champ comes home from school in the afternoon, she does her homework. After dinner she goes swimming, plays badminton or goes to see her best friend Laura.

One day in June, Becky gets home, opens the door and shouts, “Hello”. No answer. Isn’t her dad Henry at home? She walks into the kitchen and looks around but can’t find him. His food is in the oven. How strange!
