SAINT MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Welcome to Saint Michael and All Angels. Our community holds sacred the important moments of our common life: births, baptisms, first communions, weddings, and anniversaries. These are just some of the many joyful events we celebrate as a parish family. But as believers, we also know that life has its seasons of loss, when those we know have moved on to a larger life in the Lord. Whether members or not, Saint Michael is a place that prays for and remembers all who touch our lives.
In honor of those who have died, Saint Michael offers the liturgy of All Souls Evensong. Through this worship service, we dedicate sacred time and music to honor the people who have loved us as we have loved them. It is through All Souls Evensong that we recognize our grief, remember our loved ones, and refresh our ancient hope of resurrection through our Lord, Jesus Christ.
We are glad you are with us and pray you may give yourself to this important time when our parish remembers those who came before us, who have mentored us, and who have touched our lives in all the ways that make us who we are in Christ Jesus. You are welcome here.
The Grief Ministries of Saint Michael include Stephen Ministry, Praying Our Goodbyes, and the 8-week Comfort and Hope for the Journey of Grief. To find out more, please contact Pastoral Care at (214) 363-5471.
The Reverend Greg Pickens Associate for Pastoral CareWelcome! I’m very glad you’ve joined us for worship today. Please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found in the pew back or on a table nearby. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.
This fall, I hope you are plugging in to our wonderful midweek offerings, including weekday meditations, Bible studies, and service opportunities. Worshiping, learning, and giving together helps us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Prelude on the name of ALAIN, Op. 7
Maurice Duruflé
The Prélude et Fugue sur le nom d’Alain, Op 7, is a tribute to Duruflé’s friend Jehan Alain, who would undoubtedly have become a leading French composer, and whose life was ended at the outset of the Second World War in 1940.
In the final section of the Prélude, Duruflé quotes the theme of Alain’s most popular work, Litanies.
The Opening Sentences (standing)
Officiant Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Psalm 96:9
Officiant Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Officiant and People Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.
Officiant The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.
Officiant O Lord, open thou our lips.
Choir And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
Officiant O God, make speed to save us.
Choir O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
Officiant Praise ye the Lord.
Choir The Lord’s name be praised.
Choir Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Evening Hymn (standing, sung by all)
“Christ, mighty Savior” Mighty Savior Hymn 35
Hymn continues on the next page
Out of the depths have I called to you, O LORD; LORD, hear my voice; * let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.
If you, LORD, were to note what is done amiss, * O LORD, who could stand?
For there is forgiveness with you; * therefore you shall be feared.
I wait for the LORD; my soul waits for him; * in his word is my hope.
My soul waits for the LORD, more than watchmen for the morning, * more than watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, wait for the LORD, * for with the LORD there is mercy; With him there is plenteous redemption, * and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as is was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect.
The Psalm 130 (seated, chanted by the choir) Edward John Hopkins
My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations.
He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: * as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Second Lesson John 5:24-27 (seated)
Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judg ment, but has passed from death to life. Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.”
Howells’ life was forever changed in 1935 when his nine-year-old son Michael went from playing during a family vacation in Gloucestershire to deceased from polio only hours later. Michael was buried in Gloucestershire. Herbert Howells himself grew up in Gloucestershire and learned organ as a teenager at Gloucester Cathedral. Perhaps it is no surprise then that his setting of the Evening Canticles written for Gloucester Cathedral in 1946 might carry an All Souls sensibility.
The Congregation is invited to come foraward to light a candle in memory of those we love, but see no longer.
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, * which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: * as it was in the beginning, and is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Apostles’ Creed (standing, chanted by all)
Officiant and People
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

I am Resurrection and I am Life (chanted by the choir) David Charles Walker
I am Resurrection and I am Life, says the Lord. All who have faith in me shall have life, even though they die. And all who have life, and have committed themselves to me in faith, shall not die for ever. As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives and at the last will stand upon the earth. After my awaking, he will raise me up; and in my body I shall see God. I myself shall see, and my eyes behold God who is my friend and not a stranger. For we have no life in ourselves, and none of us become our own master when we die. For if we have life, we are alive in the Lord, as if we die we die in the Lord. So then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s possession. Happy from now on are those who die in the Lord! So it is, says the Spirit, for they rest from their labors.
- Funeral Anthems, Book of Common Prayer (drawn from John 11, Job 19, Romans 14, Revelation 14)
Officiant The Lord be with you.
Choir And with thy spirit.
Officiant Let us pray.
Choir Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.
Officiant O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us.
Choir And grant us thy salvation.
Officiant O Lord, save the State.
Choir And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.
Officiant Endue thy ministers with righteousness.
Choir And make thy chosen people joyful.
Officiant O Lord, save thy people.
Choir And bless thine inheritance.
Officiant Give peace in our time, O Lord.
Choir Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.
Officiant O God, make clean our hearts within us.
Choir And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.
Officiant
O God, the Maker and Redeemer of all believers: Grant to the faithful departed the unsearchable benefits of the passion of thy Son; that on the day of his appearing they may be manifested as thy children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Choir Amen.
Officiant
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior.
Choir Amen.
Officiant
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give thine angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for thy love’s sake.
Choir Amen.
Welcome (seated) The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
How They so Softly Rest by Toronto composer Healey Willan (1880–1968), to a text by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1870–1882), was composed near the end of World War I. The motet is dedicated to the memory of the choristers of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir who died in the Great War.
Anthem (seated, sung by the choir)
How they so softly rest, all the holy dead, unto whose dwelling place now doth my soul draw near!
All in their silent graves, deep to corruption slowly down sinking! And they no longer weep, here, where complaint is still! And they no longer feel, here, where all gladness flies!
And by the cypress softly overshadowed, until the angel calls them. How they so softly rest.
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
Officiant Let us bless the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Bible was written over the course of 1500 years by more than 30 different authors, in nine different genres, on three different continents, each one with a unique time, place, and context. If that’s not enough, understanding Scripture is complicated all the more by the fact that we are separated from the text through time, culture, and worldview. Most of us have never been taught how to read and interpret the Bible in its original context. The goal of this class is to get you excited and re-engaged in discovering God’s Word anew by learning the original meaning of a text. To do that, we’ll teach you some frameworks, and share tools and resources that will forever change how you engage and read God’s Word.

Some faithful Christians are reluctant to pray because they are concerned that they are not doing it right, especially if they are not using a prayerbook. Elizabeth Lang will lead us in examining a variety of prayers in the Bible so that we can discover what speaks to each of us about prayer. There are many questions and answers that come from exploring outrageous prayers in the Bible. These may free us to pray with honesty and faith.
Led by the Rev. Christian Basel Sundays, November 13–December 18 10 a.m. in the Theater
The Class for Parents will begin a new six-week study on “The Case for Christ,” by Lee Strobel, which confronts the difficult questions around who Christ is and will help to equip us in both understanding and discussing faith with our families. Please join us!
Beautiful nativities, ornaments and gifts from our fair trade vendors around the world. The 2022 Christmas ornament is available for purchase and was designed by parishioner Elizabeth Buchanan. The Book Shop will also be participating in Partners Card Oct 28–Nov 6 so get your Christmas lists ready!
GRASP DALLAS CHAPTER Grief Recovery After Substance Passing Thursday, November 10 6:30 p.m. in the Parlor
GRASP was created to offer understanding, compassion, and support for those who have lost someone they love through addiction and overdose. Anyone who has lost a loved one through substance use knows that society treats this loss differently than a death from any other cause. Everyone who wants to find a safe place to express their concern, grief, and walk toward understanding and grief recovery is welcome.
