The Second Sunday of Advent December 7, 2025

9 AM NATIVITY PAGEANT Church

WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Today we celebrate the Advent seasons with our annual Nativity Pageant at the 9 a.m. service. Thank you to the young people and adults who give so much time to make this such a great gift to all of us! Please consider coming back tonight for our Advent Compline Service at 7 p.m. in the church. Then next Sunday, join us for our special service of Christmas Lessons & Carols at 4 p.m. in the church. Please pick up a Sunday News handout if you haven’t already and join us for our special programming whenever you can.

You’re invited to sponsor flowers for our Christmas services with a donation of any amount. Please make donations by December 12 to be included in the Christmas Altar Flowers Memorial bulletin. We have multiple ways to give over the next month, including the purchase of Heart of Giving Christmas cards that provide tangible benefits for Mission and Outreach initiatives.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Two settings of the hymn tune “Nun komm’ der Heiden Heiland” are featured in today’s services, both from the Leipzig Chorales. In Lutheran Germany, this chorale is associated with the first day of Advent. Its text begins with a plea for Christ to come to His people: “Come now, Savior of the gentiles!” This cry underscores Advent’s intent—to await the birth of our Lord. The setting heard in today’s prelude features a heavily ornamented melody in the right hand over ponderous, slowly moving statements in the left hand and pedal.

A Spotless Rose

A spotless Rose is blowing Sprung from a tender root, Of ancient seers’ foreshowing, Of Jesse promised fruit; Its fairest bud unfolds to light Amid the cold, cold winter And in the dark midnight.

Herbert Howells

The Rose which I am singing, Whereof Isaiah said, Is from its sweet root springing In Mary, purest Maid; For through our God’s great love and might The blessed babe she bare us In a cold, cold winter’s night.

The Great Thanksgiving (standing)

People And also with you.

Celebrant L ift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant continues.

Herbert Howells’ “A Spotless Rose” is one of his most beloved short carols, written in his twenties. Setting a translated 16th-century German text, Howells creates a mood of quiet wonder at the image of Mary as the rose springing from Jesse’s stem. The piece features gentle, modal harmonies, flowing lines, and a hushed, timeless atmosphere.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Dear God, we give you thanks for the many blessings you give to us. We thank for the beauty of the world, for our families and friends, and for your love for us.

We especially thank you for your son, Jesus. With this offering of bread and wine, we remember his sacrifice and proclaim his resurrection until he comes again.

On the night he was betrayed, he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body, which is g iven for you. Do this when you remember me.”

After supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, given for you. Do this when you remember me.”

And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. Set them apart by your Holy Spirit to be for us the Body and Blood of Jesus.

Gather us all together and make us living examples of him. Help us to live as your sons and daughters, and to show others how to live with faith, with hope, and with love.

All are invited to come forward to the two standing stations for Communion at the direction of the ushers. Gluten free wafers are available upon request. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

All this we ask in the name of your son, Jesus, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit is with us wherever we may be and who is our friend and guide. AMEN.

Let us say the prayer Jesus has taught us:

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (kneeling, sung by all) Hymn S 152

“Alleluia, Christ our Passover”

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Communion Hymn (sung by all) Hymn 54

“Savior of the nations, come!” Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland

Communion Anthem (sung by a Saint Michael Choir member)

Comfort ye & Ev’ry valley from Messiah George Frideric Handel

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

- Isaiah 40:1-3

Ev’ry valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill made low; the crooked straight, and the rough places plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

- Isaiah 40:4-5

George Frideric Handel’s “Comfort Me” is a short, expressive anthem drawn from the Psalms. Written in his characteristic Baroque style, the piece features flowing, lyrical lines and gentle harmonic support that evoke tender reassurance. The text’s plea for divine consolation is mirrored in the music’s warm, embracing phrasing, making it both intimate and profoundly moving.

Handel’s “Ev’ry Valley” is a jubilant tenor aria from Isaiah 40:4–5 that vividly paints the biblical imagery of valleys lifted, mountains lowered, and rough places made smooth. The music mirrors this prophecy through lively, arching melodies and energetic rhythms. Ornamented with Baroque virtuosity, the aria captures both drama and optimism, offering singers a chance to showcase expressive phrasing and technical agility while conveying a message of hope and divine promise.

César Franck’s organ reputation rests on just a dozen pieces, including the three great Chorals and the Pièce Héroïque, all dating from 1868 until his death in 1890. Today’s postlude comes from a group of 44 pieces, most published posthumously under the editorship of Franck’s son Georges in 1905. These were designed as liturgical offertories for parish organists “in the provinces,” playable on harmonium or larger pipe organs.

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
