Dear Friends, We are nearing the holy season of Advent and the beginning of the new church year. Thanksgiving Day is often the very last major holiday of the church year (as it is this year), which makes Thanksgiving a special moment to take stock of the year past and the year ahead. As you give thanks to God for your many blessings, I invite you to show your gratitude by sharing in our mission. One way to do that is to participate in two of our signature Christmas ministries: I Believe In Angels and Heart of Giving.

Volunteers will be in the hallways today to help you participate in these great ministries.

In addition, I want you to join the hundreds of households who have already pledged their financial support for our shared mission in 2022 by making a gift now. Your support will help our church expand the power and love of Christ here at Saint Michael and in our community.

The First Sunday of Advent is November 28, and the theme of Advent at Saint Michael is Prepare the Way. As we anticipate the promise of hope in the coming birth of the Messiah, join us in preparing our hearts and minds to welcome Christ once again! T. Frederick Candlyn was born in Davenham, Cheshire, England, in 1892 and died in Point Lookout, N.Y., in 1964.

In 1942, Candlyn set the text, Christ whose glory fills the skies, written much earlier by poet Charles Wesley in 1740.

Wesley was educated at Oxford, where, in 1727, he formed the “Oxford Methodist” group among his fellow students.

His elder brother, John joined in 1729, and together, they established what is now the United Methodist Church.

Kings’s Weston

Tournemire was known as an extraordinary improviser at the organ, and was an improvisation teacher of many important organists in the early 20th-century. Today’s postlude began as a live improvisation on one of the great hymns of praise, the Te Deum, in its plainsong form (S-282 in our hymnal); Tournemire’s playing was recorded, and his student Duruflé later faithfully transcribed it. The harmony, and the melodic themes, are based on the original chant, and the tremendous intensity of the piece portrays well the Te Deum’s depiction of all in heaven and on earth ceaselessly praising Christ, the King.

The fact is, “Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.” And hurry may be the most defining characteristic of the Christmas season. Does Jesus really want us to live at the pace of the world around us? Or does he call us to something different?

This season of Advent provides just the opportunity to reassess what God wants our lives to become and at what pace God wants us to live. Want more peace, less stress, a deeper relationship with Christ, and greater awareness of His presence throughout your day? Join us for this Advent Retreat as we consider how to prepare our lives to welcome the Christ child and head into the New Year with the practices and rhythms God wants us to have.
