As we near the end of the school year, I ask your special prayers for all the students, teachers, and staff in our Saint Michael family. This year, in celebration of our high school graduates, we will hold a Senior Recognition Service this afternoon in the west field tent. This is an opportunity to celebrate their achievement and the bless them as they prepare for their next, exciting chapter. Our seniors are featured in today’s bulletin, so please check out the spread and add them all to your prayers.

Speaking of students, our youngest Saint Michaelites can participate in Vacation Bible School in-person this summer and registration is now open! VBS at SMAA is great fun for kids of all ages, including the young-at-heart. In addition to providing a great experience for our students, we need teens (service hours!) and adults to help volunteer for the fun. Please email Regan Wallace for more information.

Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for Pentecost on Sunday, May 23! Often referred to as “the birthday of the Church,” Pentecost is a wonderful celebration, and this year, we’ll have many options. In the morning, we will celebrate with big music and festive liturgies at both the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. You also have the opportunity to join us

Perhaps most widely known for his Symphonie Concertante for organ and orchestra, Joseph Jongen was a prominent Belgian organist and composer through the first half of the twentieth century. His “Chorale” for organ slowly builds intensity through beautiful, sonorous harmonies and a gradual crescendo as it approaches its conclusion.

The Lesson

Acts 8:26-40

An angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him.

Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” The eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem

This setting of Psalm 117 forms part of Mozart’s Solemn Vespers, written for Salzburg Cathedral in 1780. The psalm’s two verses are set very simply for solo soprano; the choir gently echos her melody in the Gloria Patri, and the soprano re-enters to sing a richly-ornamented final “Amen” – the only moment when all voices join together.

Postlude Prelude and Fugue in B Major, Op. 7, No. 1

Marcel Dupré

Dupré ranks among the greatest organists, organ pedagogues, and organ composers of the previous century. Dupré additionally served as organist at one of Paris’ most prestigious churches, St-Sulpice, for 37 years. Dupré himself is known to have referred to his Prelude and Fugue in B Major, completed in 1914, as fitting for a great celebration. Indeed, the Prelude’s texture mimics the swinging of bells in a tower and can easily bring to mind a joyous atmosphere of festivity.

The Fugue’s lively melody gives way to a high energy conclusion.

“And God saw that it was good...“ Through prayers, hymns, and scripture our worship praises God for the blessing of creation and invites us to care for God’s created order. In this tough time of the pandemic, many people have found solace and peace in nature. In the midst of the wobbling polar vortex that brought suffering to Texas, we noticed our dependence on resources for life and comfort. What is a faithful response to both our love for and fear of nature? This course will bring together wisdom from our Christian tradition and current knowledge to address how we can protect the earth and preserve ourselves and our fellow creatures. We invite people to join in reading and discussing To Serve and Guard the Earth by Beth Botarski as a way to explore faithful responses to our situation. Instead of listening to a lecture, people will be invited to engage in group discussion, which Dr. Elizabeth Lang will facilitate.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: •

INCREASED CAPACITY Occupancy for all rooms on the SMAA campus has increased to 50%, even if that results in less than 6 feet distance between individuals. Our Operations department is determining what this means for each room and will post these numbers. In the main sanctuary, up to 200 people may attend worship, in addition to worship leaders and volunteers. This works out to five people per pew, but households with more than five people may sit together in one pew. While a simple registration process will still be required for Sunday morning services, seats will no longer be assigned. The new, easier-to-use registration system is live at saintmichael.org/inpersonworship. We continue to livestream our major Sunday morning services for the foreseeable future.

MASKS are still required indoors, except for small groups where everyone is fully vaccinated (defined as two weeks after the final dose). We are not defining small groups, because that is at the discretion of the group leader. If anyone in the room is unvaccinated, or vaccination status is unclear, everyone should keep their masks on. Outdoors, masks are only required when going to and from your seat or standing close to others. Once you are at your seat outdoors, you may remove your mask.

CONGREGATIONAL SINGING is permitted indoors, as long as masks are worn (with certain exceptions for worship leaders). Outdoors, unmasked singing is fine while you are at your seat.

COMING FORWARD TO RECEIVE COMMUNION Worshippers may receive Communion from fully vaccinated priests up front. While envelopes with wafers are still available at the entrance for those wishing to receive Communion at their seats, everyone else is invited to come forward to receive the bread (no common cup yet). Just wear your mask until you reach the priest, remove your mask to take Communion, and put your mask back on before returning to your seat. Distribution of Communion in Saint Michael Chapel at 12:15 P.M. on Sunday will continue for now, but will probably be phased out at the appropriate time.

OTHER WORSHIP INFORMATION We are still avoiding physical contact at the peace, passing the offering plate (offertory baskets will be available outside), and presenting the gifts from the back of the church. Worshippers are encouraged to move outdoors immediately after the service and not congregate inside.

ENTRANCES & EXITS The main campus entrance for Sunday worship is the school entrance on the west side of the building (the north entrance is closed due to imminent construction). Those who can’t walk that far due to physical disability may enter through the south entrance. Greeters are available at both entrances. Clergy, staff, and worship volunteers should enter through the south entrance.

FEWER FORMS Answering and signing a COVID-19 questionnaire will no longer be necessary for individuals entering the campus. During the week, visitors without a nametag should stop at the reception desk to get a temporary nametag.

NAMETAGS Wear your nametags! This is an act of hospitality and will help us reconnect. It’s also important for church and school safety.

•

SAFETY is paramount: wear your masks (except as indicated above), don’t come in if you are sick, maintain physical distance to the degree possible, and wash your hands.

Sunday services are offered in-person, streamed, and on-demand, at 9 AM CT, 11 AM CT, and 8 PM CT (online only).
