In less than two weeks we will begin the holy season of Lent! It might seem a little strange for me to be excited about Lent, given its Re v. D reputation for repentance and ashes a, t a ir r. C hristopher D. G and other un-fun themes, but Lent is a very special gift to us all. Lent is a season that asks us to consider a very important question: Who do we want to be? We have an opportunity each year to take 40 days to consider that question with the true weight it deserves, and we are about to embark on that journey together.

On February 17, we begin Lent with Ash Wednesday. We will offer three worship experiences that day: two in-person at 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., and one online at Noon that will be available on demand afterward. If you are unable to join us in person and still want to receive ashes physically, we will have packets of ashes blessed here at Saint Michael that you can pick up beginning Wednesday, February 10 from the church’s receptionist during regular business hours. You can use these ashes on yourself or your loved ones while worshipping with us online!

This year, the theme for Lent at Saint Michael is Covenant: Sacred Promises. We have multiple ways for you to engage with us, including a sermon series, a podcast series, creating athome altars, and a special service project. Each Sunday, in both morning services, our clergy will dive into important issues of our covenant with God, the promises we make at our baptism.

Beginning on Ash Wednesday, we will launch a new podcast series that will explore ideas of covenant each weekday with prayers and meditations led by our clergy.

In addition to sermons and podcasts, we have prepared a special, interactive Lenten experience for you that will bring the holy home. Lenten packages have been mailed to all those members who have made financial gifts to the church in the last 15 months and we have made extra packages available for pickup at the church for anyone who would like one. Each package contains a purple cloth, blessed here at Saint Michael, that will form the foundation of a home altar, along with a meditation book to guide you in weekly reflections and a calendar that will help you build a wonderful gift for our most vulnerable neighbors.

Holy Eucharist Rite II

The flowers adorning the Altar are given in Memory of William Plack Carr Sr. Beginning in A Minor and ending in C Major, this Adagio comes to us as the middle movement of Bach’s “Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue,” in which the outer movements are lively and vibrant. The Adagio, by contrast, takes a plaintive tone.

When Jesus and his disciples left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. Irish by birth, Stanford was one of the most influential composers of Anglican church music of his day. As a composition professor at the Royal College of Music in London for most of his life, his teaching influenced some of the most important composers of the following generations. One of his most beloved if also simplest anthems, O for a closer walk with God depicts the poignant beauty of communion with God in the first verse. The music unsurprisingly takes a more tension-filled turn at the end of the second verse, only to return to the opening music material at the third verse. The climax of the anthem is at “purer light�, an appropriate high point within the season of Epiphany.

“This Epiphany season, we sing 20th-century Welsh composer William Mathias’s rather extroverted setting of the Sanctus. Mathias is particularly important to Saint Michael because he has previously been commissioned by Saint Michael to write new choral music premiered by our choir. Notice the music’s growing excitement at “heaven and earth…” leading up to a “Hosanna in the highest.” Note, too, that the music repeats itself starting at “Blessed is he…”

This morning’s postlude was selected for its brilliant and frequently changing toccata figurations. The “stylus phantasticus” of the northern European Baroque, which strongly impacted Bach in his early years, emphasized the value of shocking audiences with such sudden changes as these.

Today, this piece is selected for its vivacious, sparkling nature to match the active and engaging nature of the season of Epiphany, in which the magi journeyed to Christ and we in turn are called to bring his message to the world.
