As we begin a new year at Saint Michael, a good bit of work is being done to “close” the previous year. In conversation after conversation, I am hearing Re v. D ta, such optimism about our future ir a r. C hristopher D. G because of the work we’ve done in 2020. We should all be proud of the faithfulness we’ve shown through a very difficult year. That faithfulness buoyed our mission and helped us help our neighbors more than ever before. I look forward to sharing a review of last year at our Spring Parish Meeting on Sunday, February 28. Until then, let’s keep the momentum going!

Today we will welcome many people who have connected with Saint Michael during this pandemic season. If you are new to Saint Michael or want to deepen your connection to this church community, please join me at 12:30 p.m. for our Saint Michael 101 virtual gathering. It’s a great way to learn more about the church and meet brothers and sisters in the parish.

We also continue to offer online teachings, Bible studies, and small groups for all ages. Each week, there are new ways to deepen your faith and encourage the deepening of faith for the children in your lives. What we do together in this community matters. Every one of us matters and we are all needed to help move our world closer to God’s hope for us. This week, a brilliant young poet reminded us of our great calling: “Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one should make them afraid. …There is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it.” Our world needs us now more than ever, to be the holy light of Christ, willing to guide everyone toward God’s promise of eternal love!

Allein Gott is a vernacular, Baroque style version of a Gregorian chant Gloria in excelsis - the song of the angels at the time of Jesus’ birth. Bach’s setting for organ uses a trio texture, that is, three voices whose independence often provide quite a challenge for the performer.

Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across.

Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

“This Epiphany season, we sing 20th-century Welsh composer William Mathias’s rather extroverted setting of the Sanctus. Mathias is particularly important to Saint Michael because he has previously been commissioned by Saint Michael to write new choral music premiered by our choir. Notice the music’s growing excitement at “heaven and earth…” leading up to a “Hosanna in the highest.” Note, too, that the music repeats itself starting at “Blessed is he…”

Postlude Prelude & Fugue in C Major, BWV 545

Today’s postlude was written during Bach’s tenure as court organist for the Duke of Weimer (1708-1717). During this time, Bach’s writing for the organ reached high levels of virtuosity and sophistication.

One of the more concise of Bach’s numerous preludes and fugues for organ, the Prelude uses a purely instrumental form and has been thought to represent early influence of Vivaldi. The four-voice fugue is a classic example of superb fugal writing of the time in its clarity of structure, voice entry, and form.

The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979.

Join us this Lent as, over the course of six Thursdays, we dive deeply into music that is thematically linked to Lent and Holy Week. We will examine masterworks of Western sacred music including the Allegri “Miserere,” J.S. Bach’s “St. John Passion,” Thomas Tallis’s “Lamentations of Jeremiah,” and more. This class assumes some knowledge of basic music terminology, but does not require an advanced musical background. Who is the Holy Spirit? How can we unleash the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives? The Prayer Ministry Book Study will examine these questions by delving into the Rev. With prayerful reverence and focused wisdom, Dr. Graham puts an understandable face on this mysterious third person of the Trinity and reminds us that God’s power is available through the Holy Spirit.
