As we roll into late October, I’m very aware of gratitude.

I’m grateful to be part of a faith community that puts love Re , v. D a at the center of our common life. t ir a r. C hristopher D. G We love God through our worship and our generosity. We love one another through our discipleship, by striving to learn and care better each day. We love our neighbors with welcoming arms and hearts of service. Indeed, I am grateful to be in a community that believes, as Bishop Michael Curry said in last Sunday’s interview, “Love is powerful, transformative, free, and freeing to all.”

The work of love here at Saint Michael continues! In addition to our regular worship services at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 8 p.m., you’re invited to join us for Outdoor Worship today at 5 p.m. in the west field. This will be an informal service featuring communion and music from our Contemporary Worship Band, so bring lawn chairs or a blanket and dress casually.

Today, between our two morning services, we will hold our Fall Parish Meeting online. This is one of two meetings held each year in which we gather the entire parish to report on and make decisions about our common life. At our Fall Parish Meeting, we elect lay leaders to important roles in our church. This year, we will be electing our next Vestry class, as well as Delegates and Alternates to represent us at our Diocesan Convention (the gathering of all Episcopal churches in our diocese).

Finally, we need you to be an active supporter of our shared mission and ministry at Saint Michael. Now is the time to make your pledge of support for the discipleship work we will share next year. Holy Eucharist Rite II This prelude, probably written in the middle of Bach’s life, is one of his most beloved and often-played organ works (usually together with its accompanying fugue). One of Bach’s most dramatic preludes, the piece opens with a declamatory solo which chromatically descends.

Deuteronomy 34:1-12

Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain— that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command.

He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended.

Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”

Benjamin Britten’s “Jubilate Deo” in C Major is one of the most frequently-sung settings of this text. It was premiered at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor College in 1961. Its jubilant character, with melodies that resemble leaping birdsong, pull the listener into the jubilant mood of the Psalm. A hushed inner section starting at “be thankful unto him” provides a moment to reflect on God’s goodness before the opening spiky rhythms and leaping melodies return at “and his truth endureth.”

Bach’s Fugue in A Minor is brimming with rhythmic vitality and life. Its subject is unusually long compared with those from other fugues of this composer and this era in general, but has a lyric quality that makes it irresistible.

The simplicity and repetitive nature of the fugue subject make it ideal for the composer to experiment with shifting metric accents. As you listen, notice that it sounds like there are sometimes two beats per measure, and sometimes three. This change in meter is not notated in the score, but is instead the aural effect created by clever rhythmic manipulations of the composer.

The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979.

STEWARDSHIP 2021

God’s Beloved Community Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it (John 14:12-14).

Saint Michael isn’t just embarking on another pledge campaign. This isn’t just one more ask on a mountain of worthwhile asks. As a Church, we are being invited to become the Beloved Community that God intends. Our financial giving makes tangible what we proclaim every Sunday – that Christ will come again.

Jesus had great confidence in his disciples; more confidence than they had in themselves. They were continually questioning, struggling, tripping, and falling. They found it hard to believe that the kingdom of God would be manifested in them.

But after the resurrection, something happened. This confused, grieving, disappointed, lost band of followers received the gift of the Holy Spirit. They found themselves not only pointing to Christ, but becoming Christ in their community. They weren’t just talking about Jesus, they were speaking in his Name. They didn’t just imagine some future healing, they laid hands on people and made them whole.

When we say we are the Body of Christ, we don’t just mean that metaphorically. We really are the Body of Christ. In ways that we don’t fully understand, our actions and attitudes, redeemed by the love of Christ, become signposts of God’s kingdom. That’s why Jesus said in the gospel of John: “If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.”

As we begin our annual giving campaign, I ask Christ to accomplish at Saint Michael more than we can ask or imagine. I ask for money sufficient to our cause, but more importantly, for hearts transformed in love. I’ve decided to take Jesus at his word, and trust that we will, indeed, do the works that he did and more, not for the sake of our ego or pride, but for the sake of the Holy Spirit, who even now is closing the gap between heaven and earth.

Giving to one’s church is something you’re supposed to do. I must confess that while raising and educating our children, saving for their college and for our retirement, Suzanne and I were very happy to simply check off that box. As our involvement at Saint Michael has increased over the years, so has our understanding of what the opportunity to give to one’s church actually is. It’s a gift from God. Saint Michael has continued to be a source of stability during this pandemic. Through imaginative offerings, our church has provided vital support to many when it is most needed which makes our contributions to this effort even more meaningful. We are grateful for the opportunity to support Saint Michael at any time, but especially now.

IN-PERSON WORSHIP (LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE) For the past six months, in-person gatherings have been strictly limited by government and church authorities due to COVID-19. Now, with the permission of from our governing bodies, Saint Michael is pleased to be offering limited in-person opportunities for worship and communion. If you and your household are well, we look forward to your presence among us. Our present in-person worship offerings include our three Sunday services and Distribution of Communion. There are limited spots for each engagement, and safety measures have been enacted to ensure the protection of all who join us.

Offered every Sunday at our 9 a.m. Traditional, 11 a.m. Contemporary, and 8 p.m. Compline services. Reserve tickets for your household at saintmichael.org/worshiptickets.

Each Sunday Saint Michael will admit a limited number of attendees to each of our three worship services. We invite all who desire to attend worship in-person to join us with members of your household. As there is limited assigned seating for each service, you must register your household online beforehand to attend. Tickets to each service are available on a first-come, first-served basis one week at a time beginning on Monday mornings. No one will be admitted without a ticket.

Livestreams and video recordings of our weekly services remain available so that all can watch and participate. Visit saintmichael.org/live to tune in.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: Tickets will be available one week at a time beginning on Mondays for the upcoming Sunday.

For your safety, the following protocols must be followed while on-site: •

Masks are required inside all church buildings.

Please maintain at least 6-feet distance from those outside your household

•

No shaking hands or physical contact with those outside your household

•

No physical passing of the peace

•

No congregational singing

•

No passing of the offering plate (there are other ways to give!)

•

No distribution of Communion during the livestream services; consecrated bread is available in the Saint Michael Chapel on Sunday at 12:30 P.M. – 1:30 P.M.

•

No coffee or congregating in the church after the service has concluded. The people will exit out the main sanctuary door immediately after the service.
