Happy Epiphany! We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Over the next few weeks, we are very blessed to offer three special choral worship services: On Sunday, January 18 at 4 p.m. in the Church, join us for Epiphany Lessons & Carols. Then on Sunday, January 25 at 7 p.m. in the Church, we will offer a beautiful Epiphany Choral Compline service. Finally, on Sunday, February 1 at 4 p.m. in the Church, join our talented young choristers for a service of Choral Evensong.

In addition to worship, please join the Men and Women of Saint Michael for two events in January: The Men of Saint Michael will host its next Men with Purpose speaker series on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:30 a.m., featuring former Dallas Mayor, Tom Leppert. Then on Friday, January 23, join the Women of Saint Michael for its annual Day of Service at Jubilee Park and Community Center beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please pick up a Sunday News handout if you haven’t already and join us for our special programming whenever you can.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Dieterich Buxtehude’s Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam is among the most striking examples of his mature chorale-based organ works. Based on Martin Luther’s 1541 baptismal hymn, the work reflects Buxtehude’s theological sensitivity and sophisticated synthesis of contrapuntal craft, rhetorical expression, and pictorial symbolism. The chorale belongs to Luther’s catechetical hymns and serves as a poetic meditation on baptism, recounting Christ’s baptism in the Jordan and its significance for believers.

Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

The flowers adorning the altar are given to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for the baptism of Mia Joan Grant and Blaire Hogans.

Recently retired as Director of Music at Washington National Cathedral, Michael McCarthy previously founded and directed the London Oratory School Schola, one of London’s leading boys’ concert choirs. Under his direction, the Schola recorded music for films including Sleepy Hollow, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. The “Vidi aquam” text, used in Latin Eastertide ritual since the twelfth century, describes the prophet’s vision of water flowing from the temple. McCarthy composed this setting for the investiture of Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori in November 2006.
