Before I get too far ahead of myself, prior to the pandemic changing the way we function day-to-day, an incredibly significant moment in the life of our parish occurred in February. After years of work, including hundreds of hours of conversations and negotiations, Saint Michael received unanimous approval for our rezoning application from the Dallas City Council. Seven years ago, Saint Michael began a process to evaluate the future of our campus. In that process, we reached two important decisions: (1) We want to grow our membership to extend God’s kingdom and (2) we know that we can grow our parish while remaining within the same physical footprint our church building currently occupies.

Re

Th

Considering a year in review is typically a delightful challenge. Considering a review of 2020 may, on the surface, seem less than delightful. However, I Re , v. D a t believe Saint Michael rose to ir a r. C hristopher D. G the challenge of this past year with energy and vision, and for that, we can all be truly grateful! In total, last year was an excellent year of creativity, faithfulness, and commitment to the mission we share to form Christian disciples for a transformed community. Let’s begin at the beginning. Going into 2020, we had only recently finished our large Refresh, Renew, and Revive project, updating our sacred spaces in meaningful ways. Through special gifts from so many in our community, we refreshed the creation window above our choir loft, as well as rebuilding the angel doors and replacing the red doors of our Saint Michael Chapel. In addition, we executed significant upgrades to our audio and video systems in the church and parish hall, investments that, in hindsight, seem Spirit-led (more to come on that later).

Rezoning our campus allows us to move forward with leasing the northeast portion of our campus. This land lease (not sale) will more than double our parking capacity, dramatically increase our green space, and provide an income stream that will primarily support ministry in the community for generations to come. This is a significant step in a long journey into the next chapter of our life together and I continue to pray that God grants us the wisdom and courage to discern how best to use our gifts as we move faithfully into the future. Although many parish leaders contributed to this transformative moment, I want to lift up Jay Grogan in particular, a former warden of this parish, who made it his personal mission to shepherd this process. Jay, along with former wardens, Matt Waller and Stewart Thomas, deserve credit for the leadership and tenacity it took to change the future of our parish in this phenomenal way. I am truly grateful for their amazing gift!

In January, we closed out our Annual Giving campaign, and for the first time in Saint Michael history, pledges totaled more than $6 million. Giving for the 2020 year was incredibly strong, and thanks to your generosity, we were able to expand critical areas of ministry to help deepen engagement across all age groups. One of the first ways we invested in new means of engagement is through a new initiative of weekday podcasts, launched on Ash Wednesday. This early investment could not have been timed any better, because when we entered the pandemic and were physically separated from one another, we had an automatic way to be with you in your homes. The incredible response we had to that first podcast series, coupled with the pandemic distancing, compelled us to create multiple “seasons” of our weekday

2020 Annual Report

businesses, and certainly in our church. Not missing a beat, our incredible clergy, staff, and worship volunteers pivoted to live, online worship from the very first Sunday. We were committed to continuing to worship together, even if we were worshiping in our homes, and we did just that. Only weeks after the quarantine order was given, we led our parish and countless others across the nation and around the world, in a beautiful journey from Holy Week and Easter. With nearly 6,000 IP addresses (households) watching live on Easter, the number of hearts and minds joining us in worship far exceeded what we have ever experienced.

education going into the 2020-2021 school year. That support met the needs of families in our city who were unable to bear the burden of at-home instruction alone. The response didn’t stop there! Going into the fall, we invested in providing free high-speed internet to the entire Jubilee Park community, a great gift to children and parents alike. We also emphasized holiday giving through, among other ministries, I Believe In Angels and Heart of Giving, both receiving gifts far exceeding years past. Through your generosity, we gave more time and money away through mission and outreach in 2020 than we have in anyone’s memory.

In our pandemic reality, our focus shifted squarely to two primary goals: (1) bringing our church experience into homes in new and impactful ways, and (2) caring for our most vulnerable neighbors with more energy than ever before. In addition to worship, our church team pivoted to engage our church family in new ways. We began posting formation videos for all ages each week, as well as hosting online small group meetings and studies, such as my Rector’s Bible Study and classes for the Men of Saint Michael (and dozens more). In addition, I began writing letters each Friday with updates about the goings-on of the church to help all those feeling disconnected. As previously mentioned, we continued to invest in the production of our podcast series, which continues to receive excellent engagement (see pg. 34).

Finally, I would be remiss not to mention the incredible impact of giving on display from our Saint Michael family. When the pandemic hit in March and we had to stop worshiping in person, the vestry and I began to plan for a 10% reduction in giving in 2020, and I thought that was being optimistic! In response to the economic downturn, we took measures to reduce expenses whenever possible, while remaining committed to our staff. I want to thank the vestry for their fidelity to all those employed at Saint Michael. In March, every staff member, including all the hourly employees who work in our choir, our nursery, and beyond, received the promise of full compensation even if they could not come to the building to work. Although this policy was ultimately adjusted in the fall, six months of consistency for those wonderful people was a source of security in an otherwise insecure world.

Not only did we creatively meet the needs of our parishioners during the pandemic, but we also sought new and expanded ways to help meet the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors. Tens of thousands of people around the Dallas community suffered from food insecurity as we entered this long pandemic. Saint Michael immediately mobilized to provide more food more quickly than we ever have, partnering with wonderful agencies with which we have deep ties, including Jubilee Park, North Dallas Shared Ministries, and Austin Street Center. In addition, the Saint Michael Foundation activated $75,000 to support children’s

As 2020 progressed, the economy stayed very strong in important sectors that buoyed our giving to meet and exceed our revenue expectations. This is an incredible story that bears repeating! In one of the most uncertain, unpredictable years in decades, the members of our church—you and me—were faithful to our mission as disciples of Christ in this world. We did not shy away from our commitment to extending God’s kingdom and loving our neighbors, and our increased impact is

While 2020 was a very difficult year in terms of the pandemic, it was a remarkable year for Saint Michael Church. We learned how to more effectively share ev. ce i K en , V our worship services and small neth H . B ran n on groups digitally, broadening our reach and our care. We carefully and compassionately aligned our building operations with government and diocesan health orders. We welcomed several new staff members, including M. Chanta Bhan, Associate for Mission and Outreach; Philip Fillion, Assistant Director of Music and Organist; and Jenna Howard, Graphic Designer. And we more fully integrated the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) into staff life, resulting in refined focus and values, strategic milestones, and improved processes and procedures.

This past year was remarkable in so many ways, not least of which is the example of faithfulness shone in this community. Saint Michael has experienced renewed growth and engagement, but this is only the beginning. Our mission to build Christian disciples for a transformed community is catching momentum and going into 2021 I’ve never felt so hopeful. We are experiencing church in new ways and when we come out of this pandemic, our community will be strong. Together, we will bear witness to the hope of Christ, because nothing heals the divisions in our world like a united church.

the fruit of our commitment. Even better, given that our expenses were naturally reduced because we could not physically be together, coupled with our giving exceeding budget expectation, we ended 2020 with a surplus. That surplus is because of your generosity. We have thoughtfully and prayerfully allocated that surplus to grow our church’s impact on discipleship and engagement, along with helping our neighbors.

Some have asked what the role of the Vice Rector is. While the Rector focuses on vision building, culture setting, institutional development, and external relationships, the Vice Rector focuses on strengthening staff, overseeing operations, and ensuring parish leaders have the resources they need to carry out the mission and ministry of the church. I am always looking to increase our effectiveness so that we can achieve our core focus, which is to “Build Christian disciples for a transformed community.”

With great hope,

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata Rector

Thank you for supporting the Church with your treasure, time, and talent. If you thought Saint Michael was impressive up to this point, watch what the next decade holds! In Christ,

S enior Warden’s Report Covid-19 took something from all of us in 2020. In the best cases, it was the comfort of our daily routines. In the worst cases, it was a loved one. Many, if not most, would find it impossible to find a “silver lining” after such a difficult year, but for our church I believe there were many. n

As the new year arrived, Saint Michael was riding a wave of momentum. Campus improvements made possible by the “Refresh” campaign had been completed. Long psc o m b, i needed upgrades to our technological systems had been made. Our youth chorister 2 0 2 0 Sen program had not only been resurrected, it was thriving! We’d just completed the most successful stewardship season in our church’s history, and our average Sunday attendance was increasing. Clearly, we were poised for a phenomenal 2020! ar or W

February, 2020 brought further excitement when our long-fought effort to rezone the North Land property received unanimous approval by the Dallas Council. The culmination of a multi-year effort on the part of several church leaders (most notably Jay Grogan and Matt Waller), this approval was the last hurdle to finalizing a lease with Lincoln Property Co. which over time will exponentially transform our church’s ability to improve lives both within our community and around the world. The Mardi Gras Party organized by the Women of Saint Michael in late February was another huge success. Attendees braved dreary weather to enjoy wonderful Cajun food, drinks and fellowship. Most wore festive Mardi Gras attire, including masks. None of us grasped the irony of that at the time. As the seriousness of the Covid-19 virus became more certain in March, how we lived our daily lives became less so. Directives dictating what we could and couldn’t do were changing very rapidly, and we were all being forced to reorganize our lives to adapt to these new realities. Saint Michael faced these same struggles. The Covid-19 restrictions issued both by Dallas County and the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas, along with common sense, meant that any “in-person” church sponsored events, pilgrimages and/or trips simply could not occur for the foreseeable future. Many of these had already been planned for months, if not years. Perhaps most difficult was the postponement of our 75th anniversary celebration scheduled to kick-off in September, 2020 and which involved a full year of already scheduled events. This decision along with other similarly difficult decisions, while understandable, were disappointing. Our clergy and staff also faced the task of keeping the church operating basically without having access to our building. Almost overnight, they transitioned from working “on-site” to “on-line”, and in spite of the logistical headaches this had to bring, by all appearances they did this seamlessly. Most critically, however, the pandemic threatened our church’s very purpose. How could Saint Michael provide comfort, healing and hope, to the many who so desperately needed these, when people weren’t allowed through our doors? Without the luxury of time, Chris, Ken, all our clergy and staff, focused all of their energy on creating ways to fulfill our church’s mission irrespective of these challenges. The technological improvements Saint Michael had made in the previous year bore fruit in 2020 by making it possible to live-stream church programs and services to our parishioners and to anyone with access to the internet for that matter.

The traditional and contemporary worship services immediately began live-streaming on multiple internet platforms. Both continued to offer Holy Eucharist as well as the incredible music which is an integral part of our worship. Parishioners were able to continue worshiping at their preferred service from their home and perhaps some even doing so while still in their pajamas and sipping coffee. Not a confession, just a comment. The result was that our attendance numbers exploded. Individual IP addresses tuning into one of the services consistently exceeded 1,500. Since one IP address almost certainly included multiple viewers, the numbers became even more significant. They also indicated something even more meaningful was happening … the scope of Saint Michael’s reach was dramatically expanding. The growing number of people watching our Sunday services were now doing so not only from our area but from many other states and countries as well! For those wanting to physically receive Holy Communion each week, our clergy and staff again rose to the challenge and developed a plan to distribute Communion safely, all while adhering to the protocols required. Engagement in other areas continued to increase. The Lenten podcast series, a beautifully presented daily scripture reading offered each morning by one of our clergy, was extremely successful with over 10,000 listens. The success of this series has prompted the continuation of podcast for various other church seasons, which is an incredible gift to our church community. The 2020 Farmers’ Market saw near record average attendance in spite of the significant “social distancing” constraints they faced. Tricia Stewart and the entire committee are to be congratulated for their efforts in making this season so successful, when it was such a daunting task to have a market at all. A quick glance through the SMAA website presents the numerous other groups and ministries which make our church so special. I wish I could mention them all! Suffice it to say that fellowship groups, bible studies and other educational classes, music ministries … all have not only survived the monumental challenges of this past year but most have continued to thrive! This could only be possible through the grace of God, and the ingenuity and unwavering dedication of our clergy, staff and lay leadership which we as a church are so incredibly blessed to have. I can unequivocally say that they all made my job as Senior Warden this past year much easier than it would otherwise have been, and for that I am incredibly grateful. In his 2019 Annual Rector’s Report to the Parish, Chris Girata stated “In 2020, Saint Michael will continue expanding our reach, deepening the spirituality of our members and inviting more people in our community to join us.” In spite of the unforeseen challenges which were right around the corner when he said this, he was absolutely correct! I can think of no better “silver lining” to such a difficult year. I want to thank our wonderful clergy, staff, vestry and lay leadership, all of whom worked extremely hard to make 2020 the success it was!

J unior Warden’s Report It would be an understatement to say that 2020 has been a challenging year for Saint Michael and All Angels. Everything we do as a parish has been disrupted in some way by the virus and pandemic. Nevertheless, we have persevered, and thanks to the leadership of our Rector, remain positioned stronger than ever in our discipleship and mission in spreading God’s word. We have a great deal for which to be thankful.

In years’ past, the Junior Warden’s report to the parish has been directed toward the status of our church facilities and grounds. During 2020, we experienced the normal ar El W ler m problems with an aging building and infrastructure and replaced one of our boilers. a n , 2 0 2 0 Ju n i o r Thanks to the dedication and service of the Building and Grounds Committee, chaired by Tom Stewart, we have remained diligent in keeping our facilities and grounds in strong working order.

I want to break with past tradition and turn the focus of this year’s Junior Warden report to a few members of the professional staff of Saint Michael and All Angels and recognition of their contributions in this difficult year. One of the benefits of serving as Junior Warden is the requirement to work with both the clergy and staff on a regular basis and being witness to the dedication and professionalism displayed in the performance of their duties. Members of our parish regularly see and appreciate the skills of our clergy; however, I would like to turn my focus to selected members of the staff who do so much to help us in our worship experience. First, I would like to acknowledge our Director of Music & Organist, Jonathan Ryan, Associate Director of Music & Organist, Meg Harper, and Director of Contemporary Music, Justin Brooks, for their contributions during 2020 in bringing music to us throughout the year in a number of different venues. Since late March, our regular Sunday worship services have been delivered via our live video streaming, and Jonathan, Meg, and Justin, as well as our new Assistant Director of Music & Organist, Philip Fillion, have kept delivering wonderful music to our parish despite the requirement to follow rigorous safety protocols. The quality of music included with our worship services has remained high throughout 2020, and we have our great music team to thank for their leadership and performance throughout the year. Keeping us informed about the many events and activities of the parish has been the responsibility of our Director of Communications, Steven Haal. We have Steven to thank for the many forms of communication that keep our parishioners involved in the day-to-day life of Saint Michael, including written pieces like The Archangel, as well as electronic communications that keep us apprised of the daily events of the parish. Steven’s diligence in keeping our parish members informed has been instrumental in the level of engagement we feel with Saint Michael even though we have been disrupted by the pandemic. Tish Visinsky serves as the Director of Parish Life Events for Saint Michael. All special events at Saint Michael, including weddings, funerals, and other special events, are touched by Tish in the delivery of these services. Such events are always conducted with dignity to the members and families of our parish. During 2020, many safety protocols and procedures were followed with respect to these special services. Tish’s leadership ensured Saint Michael continued to conduct these events with high standards of care and respect. Colleen O’ Hara serves as the Director of Operations at Saint Michael. This is a position with a vast amount of responsibility. Colleen oversees the care and maintenance of our facilities and grounds. In addition, Colleen has responsibility for other areas of parish management such as human resources management.

2020 Annual Report

9

February 28, 2021

The ability to oversee these diverse activities important to the daily life of our parish, clergy, and staff has been handicapped by the pandemic, but Colleen’s managerial skill has enabled Saint Michael to continue operating in a seamless fashion. Stewardship is an important element in the life of Saint Michael. Caroline Marak serves as our Stewardship Manager and oversees the daily operation of all stewardship activities. The clergy, along with Caroline’s diligence and hard work, have increased our level of giving and thereby has expanded the many programs and reach of Saint Michael to our parish members and the community at large. I would like to bring to your attention the work of Rob Baber. Rob serves as our Director of Finance, an important function for a large and diverse parish like Saint Michael. Rob works tirelessly in keeping Saint Michael in strong financial order and works closely with the clergy and Vestry in planning, budgeting, and monitoring the revenues and expenses of all parish activity. Saint Michael’s financial condition has never been stronger, and we have Rob’s leadership to thank for helping us reach this position within our parish. There are many more staff of Saint Michael who are worthy of acknowledgement and recognition for their professionalism and faithfulness in their daily work at Saint Michael. All should be congratulated for their hard work during 2020 under trying conditions. Finally, I would like to make note of the contributions of the other two Wardens with whom I served during 2020: Senior Warden Jay Lipscomb and Warden-at-Large Blair Oden. Both individuals exhibited leadership skills throughout the year in the performance of their important roles and gave freely of their personal time to the management and administration of Saint Michael. I commend Jay and Blair for jobs well done. Ending with a personal note, it has been a privilege and honor to have served as your Junior Warden during 2020. Saint Michael is a special place. With the insightful leadership of our clergy and Vestry, and the personal dedication of each of us, we can make Saint Michael an even more important spiritual home for all of us in 2021.

inancial Report beyond. Specifically $250,000 of our 2020 cash flow will be allocated to reserves as follows: a) $100,000 to enhance parishioner engagement and build community volunteerism, b) $100,000 to the WOSM Grants Committee for their 2021 grant allocation, and c) $50,000 for IT infrastructure and support. After these allocations, we ended the year with suitable reserves for future growth as well as for the capital maintenance of our building.

HIGHLIGHTS • Saint Michael’s 2020 fiscal year exceeded budget generating a net surplus of $19,343. In 2020 we were able to make meaningful allocations to cash reserves to fund future growth in areas of ath r parishioner engagement, outreach su yK re a participation, and technology. elley, S T MAA

2021 BUDGET Each year, the bedrock of our financial planning is the dollar amount of stewardship pledges in hand at budget time. Every pledge matters as they are our main source of revenue to support the growing ministries of Saint Michael. This year’s stewardship campaign successfully hit $6.3 million in 2021 pledges representing a 5.6% increase, or $337,000, over the prior year’s actual level.

• Despite the pandemic, our parishioners showed steadfast commitment to Saint Michael by honoring their pledges and making additional contributions. As always, our finances are sound and our cash reserves are certainly adequate. • The Church’s total revenue, comprised primarily of pledge payments, grew in 2020 to a record $6.8 million. Ongoing church-wide expenses came in under budget as we converted much of our programming to virtual delivery rather than inperson activities. The aggregate result was a positive budget variance in expenses and net profitability.

These are exciting times at Saint Michael and our 2021 budget, approved by the Vestry and Finance Committee, reflects a major investment in parishioner engagement, membership growth and the expansion of compelling M&O participation. To achieve our objectives, total expenses are budgeted to increase from $6,324,328 to $7,076,000 in 2021. Much of this increase represents the planned addition of new personnel hires to implement our strategic goals.

• Looking forward, our 2021 budget reflects bold and exciting measures. We show a strong 5.6% growth in pledge revenue combined with an increase in other income and reserve draws. These resources will be used to invest heavily in staff and programming strategically meant to enhance parishioner engagement and related initiatives.

On the expense side, we came in 3.3% under budget (before deposits to reserves) because while meeting full payroll during the pandemic, we incurred lower program costs overall as ministry programs and activities were mostly delivered through media rather than held in person. These lower program costs were somewhat offset by high maintenance costs of some unusual building repairs. Due to strong cash flow we covered these repair expenses without drawing on reserves as had been budgeted.

At this fortunate point in time, Saint Michael is able to purposefully invest in the future because we have successfully built up strong financial resources to do so. In 2021 we will benefit from robust stewardship as well as drawing on cash reserves resulting from past financial achievement. The 2021 budget anticipates that we will invest in ministry growth through several sources, some of which are classified as Other Revenue in the budget. Examples of such sources are: i) the increase in stewardship dollars to fund programmatic expansion, ii) receipt of distributions from the successful management and high occupancy of our Lomo Alto building, iii) use of one-third of the ESD Transition reserve fund given that we have successfully weathered the move of ESD to its main campus, iv) receipt of a set percentage of lease income from the North Land development set to break ground in early 2021, v) the draw of our 2020 surplus which was allocated to reserves as mentioned above.

The cumulative result for 2020 was a net surplus that allows us to strategically invest in the future of Saint Michael and

In summary, our 2021 budget reflects positive initiatives in hiring and programing which builds on our momentum

2020 FINANCIAL RESULTS Our financial results for 2020 were solid resulting in a $19,343 net surplus after making cash allocations to reserves. Our Total Revenue came in at $6,847,804, which is slightly over budget of $6,833,000 largely due to pledges paid, supplemented by receipt of additional unpledged gifts.

to push Saint Michael to be an even more vibrant church community. Our 2021 budget is based on Total Revenues of $7,856,000 compared to a prior year budget of $6,833,000. We have budgeted an equal amount in total expenses bringing us to a zero based budget for 2021.

AUDIT Saint Michael received an unqualified (or “clean”) opinion for the 2019 audit and the 2020 audit will be performed this Spring. The church Audit Committee reports to the Vestry and is independent of the staff, Treasurer and Finance Committee. The Audit members in 2020 were George Baldwin (Chair), Jay Lipscomb, Warren Houser, Darrell Rice and Kay Whelan.

STATUS OF FINANCIAL GIVING Our Stewardship campaign for 2021 reached pledges of $6.3 million which represents strong growth over last year pledges of $6.0 million. Our average pledge grew 7% from $5,840 to $6,233 due to the generosity of our committed givers. However our pledging units fell slightly from 1023 to 1005 which could be due in part to the difficulty of reaching everyone personally during Covid distancing. Looking forward, our robust push to increase parishioner engagement in 2021 is intended to increase stewardship participation.

CONCLUSION We trust that this report conveys that the clergy, staff and lay leaders at Saint Michael are careful stewards of the church’s resources. Your financial commitment is so very important, appreciated, and is the key to Saint Michael’s financial wellbeing, now and into the future.

As I wrap up my three-year term as Treasurer, please know that it has been a joy and privilege to serve in this role during an exciting time for Saint Michael. I am so thankful to have had this opportunity and now confidently pass the torch to Janice Bywaters who will do an outstanding job going forward.

FINANCE TEAM Saint Michael has an excellent financial staff led by our highly experienced Director of Finance, Rob Baber. Our Finance Committee is comprised of a dedicated group of individuals with a broad depth of financial knowledge. I am very grateful to our 2020 Finance Committee members: Janice Bywaters, Becky Odlozil, Mike Ernst, Jeff Kilpatrick, Stacey Malcolmson, Bill McGannon, Andy McRoberts, Grady Schleier, Jim Smith and Chris Wiley.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Kelley 2020 Treasurer

DONATIONS TO THE FOUNDATION Many of you remember our friend and longtime parishioner, Robert E. (“Bob”) Wilbur. Bob loved Saint Michael and All Angels Church, and he served her in many capacities over the decades. Bob’s widow Nancy and daughter Paige are also active Saint Michael parishioners, and they wanted to honor Bob’s memory and his service to Saint Michael. Knowing how much Bob adored the clergy at Saint Michael, Nancy, and Paige wanted to honor Bob’s memory and tie it to helping spread joy and happiness to our clergy. So they made a generous gift to the Saint Michael Foundation.

Transforming lives through acts of love: that’s what the Saint Michael Foundation has been doing. In 2020, a year of so much need, the Saint Michael Foundation helped our community and our parish om A as, M with grants totaling over $238,000, S 2 02 0 t Pre si d e n spread over church ministries, local agencies in need, and national causes. When the pandemic sent school children home to learn, the Foundation quickly stepped forward and made unsolicited gifts to Catch Up and Read, The St. Philips School, United to Learn, Vickery Meadow Youth, and Jubilee Park to provide much needed computer technology to allow underprivileged children to learn from home.

The mission of the Saint Michael Foundation is to solicit, manage, and steward funds to enhance the ministries of Saint Michael. Thanks to Nancy and Paige Wilbur, the new Bob Wilbur Clergy Happiness Fund at the Foundation is now devoted to funding activities that promote the happiness of our parish clergy. What a great way to use our Foundation!

The Foundation is excited to partner with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry as the presenting sponsor for a soon-to-be released independent film featuring his new book, Love is the Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times.

Unrestricted gifts made to the Church from an estate or in memoriam are transferred to the Foundation’s endowment fund, thus allowing the donor to continue to support the Parish in perpetuity. In addition, the All Angels Society exists to encourage parishioners to designate the Church in their wills. Membership in the All Angels Society signals a parishioner’s commitment to include Saint Michael in his or her estate planning.

While most of our worship was transformed to online this year, we helped bring a meaningful worship experience into our homes with distributions supporting the Church’s music ministry, building maintenance, and church operations totaling almost $62,000. Another transformation taking place is within the Foundation itself as we continue to grow and evolve. For example, in 2020 we:

Please consider making a contribution to the Foundation beyond your annual operating support and to include the Church in your estate plans and become members of the All Angels Society. Contributions may be made to the Foundation in support of unrestricted, temporarily restricted, or permanently restricted accounts supporting such areas as Mission & Outreach, Pastoral Care, Youth Ministry, Operations Endowment, the Columbarium, Music, and the Ratelle Speaker Series.

• Adopted a new Distribution Policy which authorizes the Trustees to distribute up to four percent (4%) annually of its discretionary assets • Hired a new investment manager, Westwood Trust • Hired a new accounting firm, CapinCrouse • Hired an auditor to conduct our first audit

Faithfully,

• Revised our bookkeeping and accounting systems to simplify and streamline reporting • Hired marketing and branding consultants to assist in focusing the Foundation’s strategic and tactical goals for supporting its mission

A nnual Giving Wow – what a year! It is safe to say that 2020 was one for the books and in the case of growth at Saint Michael, that saying most definitely applies! Year over year, we strive to reach new heights and you faithfully walk with us. During a year of much uncertainty, your trust Ro e c and faith in the work of God’s kingdom in our n bB in a a b e r, F f o D i re ct o r community never waivered. The campaign to support the 2021 program year grew by 5.6% with a total of $6.347 million dollars! r

The commitment from our parishioners surprises us each year, and it shouldn’t. Each year, the body of Saint eM M Michael steps up and rises to the call. This is evident in a ra k h ip , St e w a r d s the hours of volunteer time given in support of the many missions of our church, the commitment from the volunteer leaders serving on boards and committees, in addition to the financial support as evident in the giving toward church operations and to the additional giving in support of specific relief efforts each year. This year was one of the strongest years in giving. Many parishioners knew early on that our community would be facing tough times and these families made their annual gifts early or increased their annual gift knowing some families would not be able to fulfill their commitment. Our church, and our community, is better because of the faithfulness of our parishioners. The smallest impact made the biggest difference! At the beginning of our campaign, the leadership bodies of the Foundation, Vestry, Stewardship Committee and Finance Committee were all at 100% participation with their pledges getting us off to a strong start. The end of the campaign saw an increase in the average dollar pledged from 2020 to 2021 raising it to $6,233. The financial support of the Saint Michael community is inspiring and fills our hearts with gratitude! Kimberly and Joe Colonnetta infused the power of the Holy Spirit in our work as a Stewardship Committee. Together, we studied The Blessed Life by Dr. Robert Morris to grow our spiritual formation around the different facets of having a generous heart. In our reflections together, a member found herself understanding that her spiritual and financial generosity is a gift from God to be used spiritually and sacrificially for the good of His church. With your generous pledges, you have all done the same. 2021 is going to be a transformational year!

MINISTRY REPORTS

Worship & Liturgy

2020 proved to be full of challenges and changes for worship and liturgy. With the presence of Covid-19 all we had come to accept as regular worship needed to be adjusted. Our Bishop surrounded himself with a medical advisory team which helped him develop safety protocols for the Diocese of Dallas. With the first lockdown, our Sunday worship became virtual with a 9 AM Traditional Eucharist and 11 AM Contemporary Eucharist. Several adjustments were made to minimize the spread of the virus during our services.

visual department as they made excellent, seamless broadcasts possible. Baptism preparations and wedding preparations with were done via Zoom. There were 14 weddings and 32 baptisms in the year of 2020. Our funerals addressed the needs of the bereaved families in spite of Covid protocols. We made each situation as pastoral as possible so that every memorial service and inurnment in the columbarium honored the life and ministry of the deceased. These efforts allowed us to care for and serve 48 families with 54 services. Communion distribution was done on Sundays in Saint Michael Chapel. An unprecedented 1,728 communions were distributed during these services. Two of our parish’s favorite liturgies were carried out outside this year: Blessing of Backpacks and Blessing of the Animals. The line of cars for both events curled out of the parking lot — they were great successes! An Advent Festival, sponsored by CFM, was a great success as the SMES porte-cochère was full of people for our Eucharist and ministries stations.

2020 Annual Report

For our Joy service, a music education portion has been introduced, where exciting, k s, po Dir m e new instruments ector of C ont are introduced and demonstrated. I continue to compose original music for our SMAA podcast series. In conjunction with Pub Theology, we began a series of 15 minute concerts before the event that spotlights local artists/singer-songwriters that artfully explore theological themes in their music. Contemporary Music continued to compose original arrangements of hymns, Psalms, and prayers. Aided by string arrangements from our percussionist, Dr. Lane Harder, we had the honor of hosting musicians from SMU for high holy day services. 2020 also marked the first collaboration of Traditional and Contemporary music in our Carols By Candlelight service.

Contemporary worship enjoyed a great year, notwithstanding the challenges. ns e to n nt Contemporary o , A ss ociate for C offered five sermon series: a six-week sermon series on world religions as contrasted with Christianity; a series on pastoral issues including divorce, facing death, finances, and the like; a five-week sermon series on the book of Jonah that featured a concluding sermon by Dr. Power; a seven-week sermon series on discipleship; and a five-week sermon series in Advent was presented to take us deeper into Christmas looking at hope, peace, joy, love, and finding Christ in the world. In June, contemporary helped put on Pub Theology, which despite being in a makeshift pub studio went well.

Who could forget the ministry year we just completed? 2020 will forever be known for COVID-19. While so many churches muddled through who to serve and how, Saint Michael and All Angels G s r eg navigated the uncertainties Pa P ic k or f e t ens, A ssocia very well, thanks to our many volunteers and our leadership team.

I wish to thank two people who are at the very center of Pastoral Care: Katherine Bowen, Assistant for Pastoral Care Ministries, and Terry Demler, our Lay Leader of Pastoral Care. These two are most involved with the direction and strategy of our ministry. Both are long-term servants of Pastoral Care and it shows through a ministry that touches so many lives.

Even though there were obstacles to ministry in 2020, Pastoral Care did an amazing job. Pastoral Care consists of 19 ministries, 24 ministry leaders, amazing volunteers, one assistant, two part time priests, and one full time priest. With this hardworking team, Pastoral Care met with, prayed for, called, knitted for, wrote to, cooked for, and saw that communion was delivered to 9,475 parishioners and friends of the parish who needed care. Twice, our Good Shepherd Ministry made check in calls to our parishioners. Though face-to-face ministries, about 80% of what we do, were impossible for most of the year, great ministry happened.

Finally, I want to tell you that it is very possible to read these words and get a sense of the passion this team has for Pastoral Care. But were you to restrict yourself to these few words of praise and thanksgiving, you would miss the best portion—the people of Pastoral Care. It is the Saint Michael volunteer who works out their faith through the offering of themselves to those who need just a phone call or note or a simple touch of common courtesy. These are the ones who make this ministry the powerhouse that it is. And it is to these members that I owe so much. It is a great honor for me to work with them in this part of God’s vineyard. Please do not pass up a chance to meet them and to express thanks for all they do for us as a parish.

As we look back to 2020, we also had some milestones. Many of you know the Sunday Prayer Team is a long-standing ministry here at Saint Michael. Over many years, Maria and Richard D’Antoni and Joan Faubion have been leading that ministry. They decided to step back from leading and be participants. During COVID, some of that group have started an online book study on Thursdays at 1 p.m. Thank you for your many years of service Maria, Richard, and Joan! We are so grateful to have Liz Wheelan take over the Touchbase Ministry. Liz makes monthly calls to those who have lost loved ones and those Saint Michaelites who cannot make it to church because of mobility or other issues. Welcome Liz, we are very grateful for your work! Hiltrude Nusser-Telfer remains a wonderful part of our

Christian Formation remains one of our top priorities at Saint Michael, leading us into a lifelong process of growth in our discipleship. 2020 was a most challenging year for our Formation department. We started out the year with incredible momentum, planning a new Confirmation process for youth, and with an incredible CFM international mission effort in Costa Rica. And then, the pandemic. I am so proud of our Formation staff team and all of our volunteers and task force members for their excellent work and flexibility as D we shifted into the new reality. We continued to provide awesome programs and ministries F r. E fo r ric e t a throughout the year regardless of the new limitations. We certainly missed offering Formation J . L i l e s , A ss o c i opportunities in person and look forward to doing so again as soon as we can. ADULT FORMATION We wrapped up the second year of the Story series with teachings about Our Story, the history and theology of the Christian faith. In the fall we shifted to our final year of the three-year cycle, My Story, with a really cool video series from parishioners on how they live out their faith in their various professions and vocations. Our Advent retreat led by the Rev. Claire Brown was one of my favorites we have ever had. Additionally, our mid-week offerings for adults continued to thrive, ably led by many committed volunteers.

CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRY Despite the craziness, Children and Family Ministry had a great year of engagement, both digitally and safely in-person. Over the summer of 2020, CFM hosted a digital "Wilderness Escape" Vacation Bible School with 47 families participating. Handmade VBS care packages went home with each, containing all the fun of VBS with crafts, Bible Buddies, and so much more! Our families were led through the desert wilderness by Moses and Malachi, played beautifully by our Rector, Chris Girata, and our Associate for Pastoral Care, Greg Pickens, n f W o r in SMAA original videos. What a fun experience! Our midweek Cherub Choir offering is all a c e , D i re c t o thriving and continues to be a source of joy for the children and staff, operating under a hybrid model, offering both in-person and digital classes for our Cherub families. CFM has also continued to offer a vibrant Sunday morning formation experience for our SMAA youngsters digitally. In addition, CFM made a big change in our Montessori classroom offering, making the decision to move from Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to Godly Play. Godly Play is a vibrant and beautifully crafted program that allows children to explore their understanding of God and their faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience though wonder and play. Our new Godly Play classrooms are being put together and stocked with brand new materials, thanks to the generosity shown by our parishioners and a lovely gift given last year. We are so grateful and can't wait to open our new classrooms to children in the fall!

YOUTH MINISTRY In 2020 the Youth Ministry at SMAA had a roller coaster of a year! We started off with a fantastic Ski Trip to Winter Park, Colorado in January, with 25 youth and 6 chaperones in attendance. We had a great time learning new skills on the slopes and building relationships amongst the youth. The rest of January and February were business as usual with our weekly youth meetings. March came and our Youth Ministry was put to a halt for a few weeks as we reimagined what an online community looked like. We started Zoom youth group on Sunday am t ou o t te Y f , D ir ec t or o nights as well as high school girls' small group on Tuesday mornings. Our summer mission trip

took a new twist, we had youth volunteer to pack lunches for Austin Street Center twice during the month of July. As school kicked off for the new year, we started our brand-new Confirmation Class with 8th grade students on Sunday morning. We continued to stream our Sunday school lessons on Facebook and Instagram each week. In September we kicked of two new Small Groups, one for arts and crafts and one for outdoor activities, as well as a Taco Tour of Dallas for high school students. As we continue to adjust to life in a pandemic the youth at Saint Michael continue to flourish and engage with our programs. We are looking forward to the year ahead!

SPIRITUAL GROWTH In 2020 we introduced Enneagram Intensives. These are short-term classes, more intimate in size, that go deeper into specific topics. With over 250 SMAA members having completed the introductory Enneagram Journey course, there is great need and demand for further offerings in Enneagram work. Initial Enneagram Intensives offered are: Enneagram & Spiritual Practices, Enneagram & Parenting, and Triads & Spiritual Growth. In 2021/22 we anticipate offering ar tu i Enneagram & Relationships and Enneagram & Work. For more information, please visit r yL ess m a n n , S p i saintmichael.org/enneagram or contact Mary Lessmann at mlessmann@saintmichael.org.

If you would like to visit about or learn how to become more involved in any of our Formation programs, please let me, Eric Liles, know. I’m proud and grateful to help lead our incredible staff and volunteers in these very important ministries of Saint Michael. God’s Peace,

VNA MEALS ON WHEELS Our VNA Meals on Wheels teams have adapted to a new schedule and safety protocols. Meals on Wheels suspended volunteer deliveries from mid-March to July 7. When they resumed regular physical deliveries, 165 volunteers were asked to make “virtual deliveries”. From July 7-December 31, the Saint Michael and all Angels team made 8,295 physical and virtual deliveries and earned the distinction of being in the top 25 delivery teams, finishing second overall. In addition, members of the confirmation class wrapped 2,000 toiletry items for the Meals on Wheels Holiday Gift Project. VNA Meals on Wheels ministry leaders include Ruthie Garrett and Byrd Teague.

It is a privilege to be present with you at Saint Michael and to bear witness to the passion, dedication, and creativity that parishioners embody in their local and global service. I find joy in leading and supporting the community as we seek to serve God in all that we do. This past year has brought out the best that Saint Michael parishioners have to offer. Parishioners’ dedication to following the call of Jesus Christ in their lives is drawing others to serve alongside them. Discipleship begets discipleship! Each program that shifted and adapted brought forth remarkable fruit that emerges from the Holy Spirit’s abundance. Thank you all for welcoming me and calling me to serve with you! Christi Morrow has done a remarkable job of maintaining programs through the past two years! Christi has been an advisor, an encourager, and a catalyst for all of our service opportunities. NORTH DALLAS SHARED MINISTRIES NDSM serves the Dallas area by providing rent and utilities assistance to individuals and families in need. Of local churches, Saint Michael has consistently provided one of the largest food collections for February, July, and November to meet the needs of people experiencing food insecurity. ST. PHILIP’S SCHOOL Coat Drive Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church hosted a coat drive for the Christmas Store as they have in prior years. This year, 415 coats were collected, dry cleaned, and donated! Saint Michael provided nearly half of the 800 coats that met the needs of 500 families. They were distributed at the Thanksgiving Meal and Christmas Store. Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry A recipient of this year’s Heart of Giving program, Aunt Bette’s Community Pantry has received both additional funds and donations from generous parishioners. The Men of Saint Michael, led by David Cowling, have volunteered numerous hours to serve the community that visits the pantry. Other parishioners who serve with time, talent, and treasure include Dotti Singhal, Russell Cosby, Jeff Harelson, Ward Skinner, and Vince Snoddy.

Local Outreach AUSTIN STREET COOKS At the beginning of 2020, Austin Street Cooks cooked and served dinner to 450 people served by the Austin Street Center. Under the leadership of Randy Rekerdres, 10 parishioners cooked a complete hot meal in our parish hall kitchen. The following evening, Rita and Dick Davis and an additional 15 parishioners serve the dinner. In March, Austin Street modified their program to respond to the pandemic by operating as a 24-hour shelter for 250 residents. The Gathering ministry leader is Lane Clark. PROJECT MOSES  Project Moses is a mission founded by parishioners to highlight the truths of human trafficking and share the Light of Christ with its survivors. To support the mission, 3 areas of concentration have been established: formation/ education, advocacy, and outreach. Project Moses ministry leaders are Terry and Mark Demler. Key highlights of 2020:

St. Mary’s Guild While Saint Michael was open, St. Mary’s Guild would sell delicious baked goods between services and the sales benefited smaller community grant requests. St. Mary’s Guild Bakers have delivered to four different hospitals. Since the pandemic began, they have delivered approximately 450-500 individually wrapped items of baked goods each Monday to one hospital. The four hospitals that St. Mary’s Guild serves are: Baylor UMC, UTSW, Methodist, and Presbyterian. St. Mary’s Guild ministry leaders are Shannon Callewart and Paula Calise.

•Financial donations received were re-distributed to local

agencies for the benefit of trafficking survivors. • Snacks, clothing, and beverages were collected and

distributed to survivors and their families. •Trafficking survivors were sponsored, mentored, and served

meals. Also, an apartment was refurbished by Project Moses members for a survivor family.

Global Missions

•Education and awareness were facilitated through monthly

meetings, presentations, letters, and social media.

AMISTAD (COCHABOMBA, BOLIVIA) The Amistad Mission provides more than housing for the orphaned and abandoned children of Cochabamba, Bolivia. At both La Villa, the Girls Youth House, the Boys Youth House and the Amistad For Families program, children and families receive the educational, medical, spiritual, and emotional support they need to overcome traumatic pasts and become healthy children and adults. Saint Michael continues their long commitment to Amistad through financial donations, our prayer friend program, and periodic video calls with the children. You may learn more about how to support Amistad at amistadmission.org. Ministry leaders are Mark Demler and Kelly Reddell.

JUBILEE PARK AND COMMUNITY CENTER Back to School Bash Saint Michael organized a drive-through event and received parishioner donations for Jubilee that included a backpack and an “at-home” kit to facilitate “in-person” and virtual learning. Decorations and signs were transferred to Jubilee where a drive-through donation delivery provided these gifts for children and families. Senior Thanksgiving Lunch The first drive-through event at Jubilee included ample pie donations from parishioners, a hot meal catered by DC Crow, household party favors given by Bitsy Hudnall and SMU sorority ΠΦ (pi phi), snacks from Nancy Neuhoff, free delivery service by Alto’s, and sandwiches from Capital One. We thank co-chairs Jeff and Darrel Rice for leading this successful event.

TELA (TELA, HONDURAS) In February, a team of 19 Saint Michael missionaries returned to Tela, Honduras for a weeklong mission. They were welcomed by The Rev. Olga Berra, the Rector of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, and members of the senior class of the Holy Spirit Bilingual School. Eight members of the senior class worked with the Saint Michael team to provide Christian Education for grades K-6 using crafts, songs, and Bible stories. The team provided fluoride treatment to approximately 600 children in the surrounding barrios and distributed reading glasses and sunglasses to adults. The 2020 construction project consisted of installing new

Just after the team returned to Dallas, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Tela has very limited medical support and their needs continued to be severe. In April, the team began sending financial support to provide food for 50 families per month and continued that support until November when Honduras was hit by two hurricanes. This created catastrophic flooding, destroying food resources. The team has increased its monthly support for the communities through the local church and is providing support for about 100 families. The team has also increased scholarship support for the school to help students through the year. The team is in regular communication with the Rector at Espirito Santos (Holy Spirit) Episcopal Church as they anticipate an opportunity to return soon. The Saint Michael ministry leaders are George Baldwin and Chris Schupp.

Heart of Giving We chose to support four local ministries that have been impacted during the pandemic. We extend our sincerest gratitude for the dedication, time, and organization that co-chairs Todd and Elizabeth Howard invested in crafting a safe process for Heart of Giving. The Howards handdelivered “Heart of Giving” cards to 93 parishioners and they managed the individual donations and online orders. Heart of Giving met the needs of several community partners because of our parishioners’ generosity. HONDURAS THREADS Honduras Threads' mission is to strengthen the fabric of lives through work, pride, and faith. It provides support to a social enterprise owned by 40 women in rural areas outside Tegucigalpa, enabling them to earn money in their own communities and help their families by making beautiful products in a safe environment. SMAA supports Honduras Threads by providing a workroom space, M&O grant assistance for mission trips, an annual Pop-Up sale, and a fabric donation drive. SMAA parishioners volunteer to tag new products, sort fabrics, take inventory, help with sales, assist with photo shoots, marketing, and advise artisans in Honduras on how to run their business. COVID restrictions on in-person sales in 2020 greatly impacted the artisans' income. The Bookshop’s special order for products marking the church’s 75th anniversary and a gift from the COVID Relief Fund, were critical in counteracting the impact of the pandemic and two hurricanes. Honduras Threads ministry leaders are M’Lou and Bill Bancroft.

Parish Life events were much smaller and outdoors in 2020 due to the pandemic. However, this did not slow Tish Visinsky down. She focused her energy on implementing our new and muchi si r needed scheduling system, eSpace. Tish worked with facilities on the logistics for re-opening the nsk a y, D i re c t o r o f P campus safely and for in-person worship. This was a major undertaking and done with excellence. The pandemic allowed the staff to become experts on all things “Zoom”. We had to pivot rather quickly to a remote work environment. With guidance from the Technology Committee, we were able to purchase laptop computers for staff members that were working on desktop computers pre-pandemic. It gave those on staff that can do their jobs remotely, the ability to do so. While we have not all been able to be together in the same building as a staff, we have been able to continue the great work we set out to do in 2020. I would be remiss if I did not mention our beloved Dollie Smith. In November 2020, after more than 35 years of service at Saint Michael, Dollie retired. We will miss Dollie’s smile and hugs and wish her the very best in her retirement! As we look forward to 2021, we do so with much gratitude!

This was March 13, 2020, and the Diocese of Dallas was about to join the global response to something the news was calling COVID-19.

Church services, formation, choirs, youth, CFM, giving—before long it became apparent this would be more than just a few weeks of being careful, but rather an exhaustive pivot in almost everything we do in ministry in response to this pandemic. For Communications, the primary goal was to assist and support the departments while there was collectively a mad-dash to discover ways to maintain connection between the church and the parishioners. To find ways to mitigate this isolation.

We settled on the primary need to increase opportunities to engage digitally (as most of the world did), and began updating our infrastucture to allow not only for a return to weekly Sunday streams, but also digital Formation, small group opportunities, podcasting, the weekly Rector’s Bible Study, special compline, and other moments. Conversely, we expanded our analog presence with the Archangel magazine, increasing VIEWS OF RECTOR circulation and making the decision WEEKLY STREAMS to mail a copy to parish households in an effort to provide photos, stories, and editorial, keeping people informed about our changed parish life.

F armers Market

One bright side to 2020 was that we were able to hold the Saint Michael’s Farmers Market! We delayed our opening to June 6 to comply with COVID protocols. We averaged 975 shoppers each Saturday during the summer and 815 in August through the end of October. It was clear people wanted to be outside shopping for fresh, local food.

r

We welcomed over 60 vendors throughout the season with an average of 34 each Saturday. We followed COVID protocols by spacing vendors farther apart, requiring masks and social cia e distancing, providing hand sanitizer and handwashing stations; and removing tables and chairs r i St e w a r t, S M F M D to discourage close contact. Despite changes, we provided fresh food to our neighborhood, a sense of community, and supported small business owners. We ended our regular season partnering with CFM and Parish Life for a fun Family Day at the Farmers Market on Halloween with vendors and church ministries participating with costumes, “tent or treating”, and festive decorations. The Parents Ministry provided balloons and caricature artists. As a bonus, Klyde Warren Park invited us to hold a Pop-Up Holiday market in December and we had 35 vendors participate. With the help of many wonderful volunteers, we moved the market downtown on December 19 and experienced great success. We estimate we had 1600 patrons and most all the vendors had their best day of the season. Thanks to all who supported the market by volunteering and/or donating to our Friends of the Farmers Market. Our 10th Anniversary season opens in our new location, the west parking lot on Saturday, April 17, 8 AM until noon.

Saint Michael Episcopal School’s mission is to provide a nurturing, individualized, inclusive early childhood experience based on our four pillars of service, education, love and faith. This year we remained grounded in these four pillars while we pivoted to meet the needs and challenges of this unique year for our school, country, and world. Our fitting 2020 school theme this year was SMES Shines Together. We have indeed done just that in a host of reimagined and wonderful ways. We know that our youngest learners thrive and learn best in et r h c aF person when physically connected to their teachers in a loving and nurturing environment. Our fS itz g e ra l d , H e a d o goal for the year was to have our students safely learning in-person on our campus to every extent possible with sense of safety and belonging for all. SMES quickly pivoted and moved into a remote learning environment after spring break 2020. Thanks to the incredible willingness of our entire team of teachers and staff and the leadership of our school, we successfully continued to educate our young learners. SMES truly stepped up to a unique situation, working out of compassion and love to meet the needs of our families and staff during this challenging time. In June, I joined SMES as the new Head of School. While I effectively transitioned into this role with the Administrative team, the focus quickly became the safe return to school. Our leadership was challenged to think outside of the box, comb through best practices, and collaborate locally and nationally with resources such as the National Association of Episcopal Schools. 2020 Annual Report

The COVID-19 pandemic, divisive times in our nation and social justice unrest led us to band together and shine even more brightly for our beloved SMES community and the greater Dallas area. From new schoolwide carpool procedures to mask protocols, increased safety and health procedures to daily class Instagram postings, the entire SMES community embraced the changes successfully, leading to a successful start to the school year. The teachers and staff met this school year with enthusiasm, excitement and creativity in spite of some understandable anxieties relating to our new normal. In the wake of uncertain times, the Administrative team has remained resilient, imaginative and realistically optimistic. They have led, learned and stayed attentive to the SMES community all while moving into a new school location on the SMAA campus and onboarding a new Head of School. We were able to create warm inviting spaces for the children, a welcoming new entryway and outward facing enhancements to promote the SMES school brand.

of our Preschool and Kindergarten children. SMES has been uplifted by the incredible support of our parent community through the many changes this year. During the spring 2020 quarantine, Father Eric led special weekly online chapel services through Instagram live. These virtual chapels remained important to our families and our staff. To ensure we remain as safe as possible at the return of school, we have held three weekly chapels for our children. Our teachers and students continue to lead the weekly lesson and bring to life God’s love for us. Father Eric Liles reinforces the stories and creates a wonderful service that everyone looks forward to each week. Our Saint Michael Parent Advisory has partnered with us reimagining ways to create fund raising events that build community, encourage connections and allow families to have a lot of fun in safe and healthy ways. In February of 2020 we had one of the most successful SMES auctions to date. Our families raised money for the SMARTS program and the teacher benefit fund, raising almost $140,000! Though we had to postpone the 30th annual Barnyard Bash from April 2020 to May 2021, we know it will be as successful and fun for families as ever. We are blessed by the invaluable commitment from our parents to the success of our school.

Before the year began, SMES recognized the importance of prioritizing health and well-being for our teachers, staff, students, and our families. Social emotional learning and development was a focus for all in our community. The start of the year focused on reimagining ways to build relationships and make connections, even though parents were not allowed into the building due to safety and health concerns. SMES hosted various outdoor physically distanced gatherings for short yet meaningful periods such as “Meet the Teacher” individual family meetings and outdoor “Donuts with Dads” gatherings within class cohorts. The implementation of technology platforms, such as the Brightwheel app, gave parents a bigger glimpse into the school day. Our teachers and staff focused on maintaining a nurturing and loving environment as we remain grounded in our school’s mission at SMES. This was accomplished through specific lessons and curriculum units that are mindful of easing transitions, being in touch with feelings and keeping emotions in mind.

As the year has progressed, SMES has embraced our new normal and we are thriving. Some reimagined enhancements have proven so successful that we plan to keep these practices incorporated once the COVID-19 pandemic is in our rear-view mirror. We have remained fully enrolled this year with children who are eager to learn, explore and grow each day. Our SMES Board of Directors also has remained extremely dedicated in their guidance, oversight and support of the Head of School towards SMES through this school year. We are also grateful and excited to report that due to the efforts, dedication, resiliency and partnership of the SMES community, we did not have to invoke a school-wide closure even during the highest levels of community spread in Dallas County.

We have stayed committed to communicating and connecting creatively with our families through bi-weekly newsletters, carpool line conversations, check-in phone calls and outdoor parent conferences. Our SHAPE series for parents continues with speakers to support parenting early childhood age, including topic such as SEL and executive functioning skills. We know that teaching and growing these young minds happen best when we effectively partner with our families. In an effort to keep parents connected to their children’s SMES experiences, we livestreamed the Family Thanksgiving Chapel and created our first professional Christmas program video telling the story of Jesus’ birth through the words and songs 2020 Annual Report

There have been immense challenges, great celebrations and a strong sense of connection for both SMES and SMAA. Our Saint Michael Episcopal School team could not have had the shined through this year without the strong partnership with Saint Michaels All Angels and for that we are thankful!

Women who are members of our parish are considered members of the Women of Saint Michael whose purpose is to “be the extension of Christ’s Kingdom by uniting the Women of the parish in a program of worship, study, service, and fellowship and leading them into the service for the church, in the parish, the community, the diocese, the nation and the world”. This year, we adopted the theme “working together to take care of one another” and following that theme is what we have done. We distributed and installed several hundred "The Church has left the building" signs in neighborhoods across Dallas. Meanwhile, two women began producing masks for the residents of the Jubilee Park. One made several hundred masks from recycled bedsheets. Another, along with her employees in her dressmaking studio, made masks that were delivered to the citizens of Jubilee Park and Community Center. St. Mary’s Guild has baked and distributed literally thousands of baked items to hospital workers across the metroplex throughout this year. WOSM hosted a booth during the Saint Michael's Farmers Market to celebrate Halloween with our smallest parishioners. This event gave them the chance to trick-or-

treat in a safe and fun environment. The Family Advent Festival provided another chance for the women to help with the distribution of goodies for children and their parents. The children visited with Saint Nicholas that evening and their parents were treated along with the rest of the parish, through the church website, to a presentation of the History of Santa Claus. Altar Guild members have helped prepare the altar for Sunday Services as well as provide manpower for the distribution of communion. They have given their services while following the protocol established by the bishop of Dallas. The Woman’s Exchange hosted events in the store where women could gather. The Exchange is now in its 62nd year and volunteers have worked tirelessly this year to produce income to be given to the WOSM Gifts Committee. This past year, we were able to give $178,000 to 69 agencies. The Gifts Committee is preparing to research requests for this year in order to provide grants to Dallas Agencies fighting poverty in our community and to Episcopal organizations working locally, nationally, and internationally. All of the agency visits as well as committee meetings will be held over zoom, and much effort has gone into the logistics of planning this complex endeavor. These 2020 Annual Report

grants will be funded by proceeds from St. Michael Woman’s Exchange and direct contributions from individuals. A small committee is currently planning for the parish party scheduled for April 2022 which will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Saint Michael. Details for this special event will be forthcoming, and there will be lots of ways to be involved. We are still optimistic that we will be able to hold our annual meeting on May 12, 2021. Our speaker will be our own parishioner Prudence Mackintosh, popular author and journalist. Yes, the Church has left the building and gone remote, but not forever. We will be back, and when we are, we will be more appreciative of our Saint Michael community that we share with great love and affection. Everyone has missed being together and experiencing fellowship that most of us previously took for granted. We can hardly wait to see one another in person and to wrap our arms around the church family that we miss.

MOMENTS from 2020

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP These are just a FEW of the many moments of worship, celebration, service and community that we were blessed with in 2020: Tish Visinsky at our annual staff Halloween party. Tish, of course, came dressed as the dumpster fire that is 2020; The Cherub Choir had their first "Sing, Play, Create" on July 15. While enjoying singalongs, we created chalk stained glass windows on the west porte-cochere; parishioners working hard to distribute pies at the Senior Thanksgiving Lunchen; Dollie Smith and her family at her retirement party in November. Saint Michael is SO thankful for Dollie and her 35 years of faithful service to the parish. OPPOSITE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP Chris Girata and Acolyte Bob Buchanan walked to Preston Center, offering the imposition of ashes to any and all unable to make it to a church service on Ash Wednesday; Chris Girata, recording segments for the "Building the Kingdom" Stewardship 2021 Campaign; SMES wrapped up the 2019-2020 school year with a parking lot car parade! The SMES teachers cheered on and waved as school families drove through to say goodbye for the summer; One of the parish's favorite events, Blessing of the Animals, was a hit as parishioners far and wide brought their furry friends to be blessed by clergy; Parishioners sheltering-in-place tune in for worship and formation online! 2020 has been a challenge for us all—but together we're learning that social distancing can't stop worship, or our ability to reach out and connect with others!
