Panel discussions and keynote presentations addressed a variety of topics, such as how the Turkish tourism and hospitality sector has made considerable progress in recent years, and why there is a need for a renewed strategy to tackle the growing gap between supply and demand. Opening introductions were delivered by the conference chairperson – Cem Centinturk, TravelClick’s Regional Director, Middle East and Africa. Istanbul Modern aims to put on the agenda Turkey’s social and cultural transformation via the work of women artists. The exhibition, which is centered on the position of women artists in modern and contemporary art, offers a new, alternative perspective on the sociocultural history of Turkey. Formed by curators Fatmagül Berktay, Levent Çalıkoğlu, Zeynep İnankur and Burcu Pelvanoğlu, the selection encompasses the production stretching from the mid-19th century to our day and incorporates many different disciplines from painting to video. The exhibition, which is also like a summary of modern and contemporary Turkish art, links close to 80 artists, including pioneering women artists the lives and productions about which we know little and whose names are almost forgotten; the rediscovered moderns; and women artists who for the last four decades have been shaping the contemporary art scene with their intellectual attitude and practical actions. The exhibition also opens to discussion the issue of female identity which in Turkey has taken shape via diverse sociocultural dynamics. Furthermore, in panels, symposia, and workshops held in conjunction with the exhibition, feminist theory, gender discussions, and women’s studies in Turkey will be analyzed by speakers from diverse disciplines

In order to take our place as a trusted advisory body, Skal’s status should be well explained to the world of tourism.” “The most important asset that differentiates Skal International from other organizations is its membership mosaic. Not only its presence in five continents and over 90 countries, but also its wide range of membership categories that no other tourism organization has under one roof (tour operators, hoteliers, airline representatives, guides, tourism press and many more). This wide representation should make Skal a trusted voice within World Tourism, especially in two areas. Skal could use this position to set: - the “Code of Ethics” in the Travel & Tourism Industry. - the principles of business between various sectors of the Travel & Tourism Industry (eg. standards for contracts and operational rules between Travel Trade, Hotels, Airlines, etc.) By achieving these two missions, Skal may also become the arbitrator in national and international disputes in the Travel & Tourism Industry.

International Tourists to hit 1.8 billion by 2030 in 2010. By 2030, arrivals are expected to reach 1.8 billion, meaning that in two decades time, 5 million people will be crossing international borders for leisure, business or other purposes such as visiting friends and family every day.n“The next 20 years will be of continued growth for the sector – a more moderate, responsible and inclusive growth,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai. ”This growth offers immense possibilities as these can also be years of leadership, with tourism leading economic growth, social progress and environmental sustainability, “ he said. There will be increases in the global market shares of Asia and the Pacific (to 30% in 2030, up from 22% in 2010), the Middle East (to 8% from 6%) and Africa (to 7% from 5%), and further declines in the shares of Europe (to 41% from 51%) and the Americas (to 14% from 16%), mostly due to the slower growth of North America.

International tourist arrivals are forecast to reach 1.8 billion by 2030 according to the newly released UNWTO long-term forecast, Tourism Towards 2030. The report, presented on the occasion of the 19th session of the UNWTO General Assembly, confirms that international tourism will continue to grow in a sustained manner in the next two decades (8-14 October 2011, Gyeongju, Republic of Korea). International tourism will continue to grow in the period 20102030, but at a more moderate pace than the past decades, with the number of international tourist arrivals worldwide increasing by an average 3.3% a year. As a result, an average 43 million additional international tourists will join the tourism marketplace every year. At the projected pace of growth, arrivals will pass the 1 billion mark by 2012, up from 940 million

UK Olympics Minister Jeremy Hunt will open World Travel Market 2011, the leading global event for the travel industry – the final WTM before the 2012 London games. Set under the high patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, the 7th edition of the show is to take place on the 2, 3, 4 December 2011 at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco. The show was created in 2005 with the initial intention to present simultaneously to professional buyers and upper-end clients a selection of the world’s most prestigious places, products and services available

Constant constructive development has led to provide an optimal business platform for all exhibitors, and visitors, and enabled MCTM to sustain itself among the top international travel venues. Based on these findings, MCTM management, in collaboration with the Board of Advisers, has decided to set the emphasis on inviting solely high-end consumers. A further strategic bonus is the show’s location in Monaco, offering companies the opportunity to promote themselves to an upscale international audience in one of the places to be within the heart of Europe.

Lufthansa in Turkey: 55 years on

On September 12, 1956 Lufthansa first landed at the international airport of Istanbul Atatürk. Since the first touchdown, Lufthansa maintained and continuously expanded its presence in Turkey. Today, Istanbul Atatürk is served three times daily from Munich and three times daily from Frankfurt. In addition Lufthansa serves Ankara, Antalya, Izmir and Bursa, bringing the total number of flights between Germany and Turkey to 74 weekly. “Lufthansa and Turkey are a long lasting love affair”, said Gregor

Wende, General Manager Turkey, congratulating the jubilee on the occasion of the 55 years anniversary of its Istanbul service and emphasizing Lufthansa’s long-term presence in Turkey. “Turkey’s popularity as a destination for European holiday makers remains high”, Wende added. “And Lufthansa offers best connections at attractive prices”. Business travelers, too, benefit from unmatched flexibility. Lufthansa currently operates a total of 42 flights per week from Istanbul to Munich and Frankfurt. At Lufthansa’s gateways passengers can connect to the airline’s global route network of 127 destinations in Europe and a total of 211 around the globe in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. The German carrier received the prestigious award for the third consecutive time. Earlier in the year Lufthansa was voted “Best Transatlantic Airline for offers and Services” at the 2011 Skytrax World Airline Awards on June 27, 2011 in London. Readers of the Business Traveller Deutschland magazine ranked Lufthansa in the top place in the two categories “Best Business Class on German and European Routes” and “Best Airline Website for Business Travellers” at the beginning of 2010.

Revenues up 39% in Etihad’s best ever Q3

Etihad Airways reported revenues growth of 39 per cent to US$ 1.1 billion (Q3 2010: US$ 785 million) on passenger numbers up 18 per cent to 2.25 million (1.9 million) in the airline’s strongest ever third quarter. Seat factor increased by 3.8 per cent to 80.7 per cent, the highest quarterly result in its history. Operating costs rose 12 per cent, on a 12 per cent rise in capacity, while non-fuel costs rose only 7 per cent. The airline has 81 per cent of its fuel hedged for the rest of 2011.

Etihad’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr James Hogan, said these figures contributed to strong profitability at an EBITDAR (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and rentals) level and the airline had moved into monthly operating profitability. “Despite the continuing challenges of high fuel prices and economic downturn in many of the markets in which Etihad operates, we are seeing strong growth in all our key commercial indicators,” Mr Hogan said. “We are doing this by creating and marketing the world’s leading air travel product, while maintaining a rigorous focus on costs. “Our clear target is to break even in 2011 and this is another big step in the right direction for us. We are well on track to delivering a continuing financial return to our shareholder.” The quarter saw consistently strong performance across all markets. Particularly popular routes included those to the Americas (New York, Chicago and Toronto), Asia Pacific (Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo, Manila, Sydney and Melbourne), Cairo, London, Dublin, Athens and Istanbul. Etihad has added six aircraft to its fleet in the last 12 months, enabling the airline to build greater depth into its schedule and increase weekly frequencies to key markets including Paris, Manchester, Milan, Geneva, Brussels, Bangalore, and Manila. In the coming months Etihad will begin flying to six new destinations: the Maldives (from November 1), the Seychelles (November 2), Chengdu in China (December 15), Düsseldorf (December 16), Shanghai (March 1, 2012) and Nairobi (April 1, 2012).

flydubai Extends its Reach in Russia flydubai, Dubai’s pioneering low cost airline, has doubled its network in Russia to four points with the addition of flights to Kazan and Ufa. flydubai’s inaugural flight to Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and the second largest city of the Volga economic region, touched down on Wednesday 21st September at 1510hrs. flydubai’s CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith travelled on the inaugural flight and was welcomed at the Kremlin by Tatarstan’s President, Rustam Minnikhanov. In addition, flydubai recently launched weekly flights to Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, also departing from Terminal 2 at Dubai International Airport. Commenting on the two new destinations, flydubai CEO, Ghaith Al Ghaith, said: “Russia is a very important market for us, both in terms of business and tourist travel. With Dubai being home to more than 18,000 Russian expats there is a growing need for quality, low cost, direct flights to these destinations. “The UAE is increasingly viewed as an ideal platform for Russian businesses to extend their reach to new markets. Russia is a growing economy, having grown by four per cent in 2010 and a further 3.8 per cent in the first five months of 2011. Through our expanding flight routes we look forward to contributing to this continuing growth.” The Kazan Kremlin, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, is just one of the attractions the city has to offer. Kazan will also host the XXVII World Student Games

in 2013 and several matches during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with the new flydubai routes ensuring that the UAE’s football fans will have a direct flight option to attend matches. Ufa, with an economy based on fuel, energy and engineering complexes, is also the largest oil refining centre in the Volga and the Urals, as well as a scientific and transport hub for Russia. flydubai also recently launched flights to Kiev, Donetsk and Kharkiv in Ukraine and in addition to the new and existing routes in Russia, Baku in Azerbaijan, Yerevan in Armenia, and Ashgabat in Turkmenistan, the airline now flies to 10 emerging CIS destinations.

One of Asia’s Leading Hotel Brands Dusit International draws upon 60 years experience in the hotel and hospitality field. The group’s origin dates back to 1948 when Honorary Chairperson, Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui, opened her first hotel, the “Princess” on Bangkok’s New Road. This successful venture represented a major breakthrough for Thailand’s hospitality industry creating and evolving what is today the nation’s leading hotel company. Continuing in this pioneering spirit, Thanpuying Chanut embarked upon a luxurious city-centre property, Dusit Thani Bangkok, which has become the company’s flagship hotel. Dusit Thani opened in February 1970 and from the beginning achieved widespread popularity, setting new standards for hospitality. Since then, despite increased competition and the unprecedented scale of new hotel construction, Dusit Thani has remained at theforefront of Thailand’s quality hotels. The essence of Dusit Thani is best symbolised by the statue of King Rama VI, which stands just across the street. King Rama IV devised a Utopian concept in 1918, named Dusit Thani, meaning “Town in Heaven”. To Thais, the word “Dusit” has two very special connotations. First, Dusit is the mythological name for the fourth of the seven levels of heaven. Second, King Rama VI took the name adding “Thani,” meaning “Town” in Thai, to be the title of a model city for democratic society where everyone would live in happiness and freedom. The company takes not only its name, but also much of its character, from the ideas of King Rama VI, whose thoughts on the modern state blended Western and Thai influences. Thus the architecture of a Dusit Thani hotel displays contemporary lines that nonetheless echo traditional Thai style. Similarly, the interior design exemplifies genuine Thai artwork and reflects classical Thai motifs, while the facilities and amenities surpass the highest expectations of modern deluxe hospitality. In 1987, Dusit recognised tourist trends towards resort style accommodations and acquired a hotel which was renovated to become the first resort property, Dusit Thani Pattaya, followed by another beach resort in Phuket – Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket. In 1989, the prestigious Dusit Resort and Polo Club opened in Hua Hin (now renamed Dusit Thani Hua Hin).

Dusit Hotels to Undergo Renovations in 2012 Thai hotel chain Dusit International has planned to upgrade their existing hotels in the coming year. The group will invest between 200-300 million baht in order to boost profits in the coming year. The company also plans to set up offices in India and China to expand their businesses and bring in more tourists from two of the world’s largest markets. CEO Chanin Donavanik said the hospitality industry in Asia had great potential and strong economic growth. He believes that the Asian tourism market is on par with the spending power to that of Europe. Dusit International currently own resorts and hotels in the Thai markets of Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Phuket. Mr Chanin expressed his concern over the current state of the global economy, believing that the world situation is more alarming than in Thailand. «The new government should look at the congestion problems at Suvarnabhumi and Phuket airports, preparing for an upward trend of Thai tourism next year,» he said. It is expected that the company’s revenue will be boosted by 15 per cent when compared with last year’s total of 3.6 billion baht.

Royal Princess Chiang Mai was opened in Chiang Mai, capital of the north in 1991, followed by a second northern hotel in Chiang Rai – Dusit Island Resort Chiang Rai opened the same year. In 1995, Dusit International acquired the Hotel Nikko Manila by purchasing shares in the holding company, Philippine Hoteliers Inc. (PHI), from Japan Airlines Development Company Limited and JAL Trading Inc. The Hotel Nikko Manila came under the management of Dusit Thani Hotels & Resorts, and was renamed the Dusit Hotel Nikko, Manila. In order to meet the high Dusit standards, the Manila hotel also underwent a major renovation programme and became Dusit Thani Manila in April 2008. In early 2001, Dusit Thani Dubai opened, adding a vital important new market, the Middle East, to the Dusit portfolio. The majority of Dusit Thani Dubai staff and employees were recruited from Thailand itself, thus ensuring a perfect transfer of the warmth and charm of traditional Thai hospitality. In 2005, Dusit set up the Middle East Regional Office also in Dubai, covering the Gulf Cooperation Council member countries, to meet the challenges of the fast growing hospitality industry there. In November 2006, Dusit Thani Hotels & Resorts added a brand extension – the Dusit Lifestyle Collection with dusitD2 hotels & resorts. Dusit International has built upon a heritage of Thai traditions to create a personal experience that is unique to Dusit; in short, an experience that enlivens the individual spirit no matter what their journey.

Amari grubunun Pattaya’daki oteli Ocean Tower’ a yöneldik.
