Koray Yetik

The winners of the Poster Competition held traditionally during the General Assembly, were the Bahamas, Bhutan, Ghana, Malaysia, South Africa, and Turkey. Turkey won the competition with its Mediterranean poster. The UNWTO General Assembly concluded with unanimous endorsement of a Roadmap for Recovery to mainstream travel and tourism into economic stimulus packages being considered by global leaders. It underscored the enormous importance of the sector for job creation, trade and development. It expressed strong concern about the dangers of increasing taxes which focus on the sector at a time of economic uncertainty and called on governments to reconsider proposed increases. It also adopted a strong declaration on Facilitation of Tourism designed to encourage governments to remove unnecessary regulatory and bureaucratic restrictions on travel which hamper its flow and reduce its economic impacts The Assembly approved the Roadmap for Recovery to respond to the economic crisis and its effect on the Travel and Tourism sector. The Roadmap is a manifesto that identifies the sector’s importance in global economic resilience; stimulus and transformation to a green economy. It details areas where the travel and tourism sector can play an essential role in post crisis recovery in terms of jobs, infrastructure, trade and development. It calls on world leaders to place tourism and travel at the core of stimulus packages and the long-term green economy transformation. It calls for special attention and support for developing states in terms of capacity building, technology transfer and financing. It also sets out a basis for action for governments and the industry to deal with the short and long term economic, climate and poverty challenges in a coherent way. The Assembly called for a moratorium on burdensome travel taxes which target tourism, citing in particular the UK Airport Passenger Duty. These taxes place a serious burden on poor countries, undermine universal efforts to promote fair tourism trade and distort markets. The Assembly passed a Declaration encouraging governments to review burdensome border control regulations and visa policies and to simplify them wherever possible to boost travel and increase its economic impacts. The Assembly expressed its support for a successful outcome of the Copenhagen Climate Conference and endorsed the UN-led Seal the Deal Campaign which seeks to galvanize widespread support for a fair and balanced Copenhagen accord. The Assembly also reviewed and endorsed action taken by UNWTO in the framework of the UN system, to increase tourism’s preparedness to respond to the H1N1 pandemic. The Assembly adopted the Astana Declaration underscoring the relevance of the Silk Road Initiative, which highlights the exceptional value and diversity of the tourism potential of the countries traversed by the ancient Silk Roads. The Assembly welcomed Vanuatu as a new Full Member, while a total of 89 private and public Affiliate Members also joined. UNWTO now has 161 Member states and regions and a record high 409 Affiliate Members. The Assembly also called upon those UN member countries that do not yet belong to the UNWTO to join the Organization. The Assembly accepted the invitation of the Republic of Korea to hold its nineteenth session in 2011. Dates to be agreed upon with the Government of that country.

Murat Koprulu, Chairman of The American Turkish Society and Chairman of Multilateral Funding International, closed the conference by stating that Turkey stood to reap its share of economic rewards once the global economy began to recover in earnest, and that sound monetary and fiscal policies during that global upswing would be instrumental in enhancing Turkey’s performance. So if you are a casino player, North Cyprus is the right place for you as there are many casino hotels in Northern Cyprus. When you come to Cyprus Island during summer months, you will be enjoying cloudless sky and plenty of hot days. For splashing in the waves and lying on a soft sandy beach this is ideal weather. With this hot weather you can practice different kinds

of summer sports and entertainment, not mentioning disco, open-air parties and nightlife. During those hot summer days a glass of beer in a bar or a cafĂŠ will do you good, and you definitely cannot omit traditional Turkish coffee and Turkish Cypriot cuisine at local North Cyprus restaurants. On the east coast between Famagusta and Bogaz, a golden beach stretches

ocus on DESTINATION for about 15 miles. By contrast on the north coast on the either side of Kyrenia, there are beaches with bars and sports facilities. Furthermore, isolated creeks decorate the landscape for nearly 20 miles. On the two sides of the Karpaz Peninsula, a large expanse of immaculate dunes bordered with tamarisk and wild olive groves await the courageous and well-equipped hiker. As there are no asphalt roads to these dream places, a reliable, off-road vehicle is essential. At G端zelyurt Bay to the west, a long sandy beach stretches out beautifully but is accessible only for the adventurous. For about one hundread million years, our waters have been visited by the green (Chelonia mydas) and the logger-head (Caretta carettas) turtles. The green turtle only nests in Cyprus, south-east Turkey and sometimes in Israel. These fascinating creatures come ashore on the deserted beaches of North Cyprus between May and August to nest and Alagadi Beach is classified as a special protected area. After sunset, when it is dark, the adult females, sometimes with a carapace of more than 100 cm long, make their way up the beach to find a suitable nesting place. There, they lay between 65 and 110 eggs, depending on the species. This can be repeated three to five times for each, 1015 days apart Sightseeing There are so many historical places of interest to visit in North Cyprus. This was bound to be so since the island is located in the centre of the ancient world which is known as the cradle of western civilization. Nicosia Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and is full of fascinating historical places. The walls ring the old city of Nicosia, with a three and a half mile circuit; contain 11 bastions and 3 gates. Today the walls remain virtually intact and it is possible to walk part of the perimeter. Nicosia contains many interesting museums and mosques which you can visit. Some containing Cypriot pottery, terracotta, clay, stone sculptures, bronze and jewellery. Famagusta The old city of Famagusta is encircled by the historical walls which date back to mediaeval times. The walls have stayed intact to this day and are well preserved. Two of the original gates of the Famagusta castle still stand: The Sea Gate and The Land Gate. Kantara Castle is magnificently placed astride the near east end of the Five-Finger Mountain. Kyrenia Kyrenia is a fascinating town on the Northern coast of Cyprus, founded by the Myceans ca.1600 BC. Kyrenia is famous for its magnificent harbor and nearby castle. The Kyrenia castle is thought to have been constructed to protect the town against the Arab raids in the 7th century. The Shipwreck Museum, located within the castle, houses the oldest recovered shipwreck in history. There is also The Bellapais Monastery and St. Hilarion Castle, built to defend the island against the Arab raids. Kyrenia houses many interesting museums which you can visit including The Folk Arts Museum and The Icon Museum. Other places of historical interest in the Kyrenia area are: The Anthipanitis Church, The Buffavento Castle and the Hz. Omer Tomb. Karpaz The Karpaz Peninsula is a land where time stands still. Miles and miles of sandy beaches with not a person in sight. Ancient towns, basilicas, ruins and tombs scatter the area waiting to be explored. the sea turtles, particularly Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas species that lay eggs along the Golden Beach. To get a taste of Cyprus twenty years ago, the traveller must visit the Karpas. Lefke

ocus on DESTINATION In Lefke you can visit Soli and Vouni Palace. The Vouni Palace was constructed in the 5th century by the Persian sympathizer Doxandros, the king of the city of Marion, to keep the settlements supporting the Greeks (Soli) under control. Guzelyurt In Guzelyurt there is the Guzelyurt Museum. The museum houses a collection ranging from the prehistoric age of Cyprus to the Byzantine period. St. Mamas Monastery, also in Guzelyurt, dates back to the 18th century and contains art going back to the 16th century. Yeni Iskele On the roads on Nicosia – Karpaz and Famagusta – Karpaz main roads where Kantara Range meets forests and valleys you find the village Yeni Iskele. The Greek name of the village is Trikomo. The name Yeni Iskele is a reminder of the relocation of Turk Cypriots from the Turkish district Iskele in the city of Larnaca on the island’s south coast. Dining Cypriot cuisine has been influenced by different cultures throuhout history. Cypriots have developed quite tasty dishes. Each dish has a peculiar taste and cooking and presentation reflects the character of the people of Cyprus. ‘ Molehiya ’ Arab in origin, has developed completely, appealing to Cypriot taste both in preparation, taste and presentation. Some dishes even vary from region to region in name, preparation and taste. Northern Cyprus is fascinating and appealing to people who eat well and enjoy eating. A great variety of vegetable dishes, grills, pastry, fish, soups, kebabs, lahmacun, pides are to name but a few. A big list of mezes, sweets, cakes, eaten either as starters or as afters can be named. It is soon becomes clear to every visitor to Turkey that the country is steeped in Ancient history. Bodrum, the ancient city of “Halicarnassus” is for sure no exception to this. Bodrum and one of the 7 wonders of the world: “The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus” Constructed for King Maussollos, the Persian Satrap of Caria and completed around 350 BC, three years after his death. This highly ornate 40-Meter marble structure adorned with friezes, statues of

horses and men survived for 16 Centuries before an earthquake damaged the roof and colonnade. The structure unfortunately then suffered “Man Made” damage in the 1500’s when the Knights of St. John used virtually all the stones from the Mausoleum to fortify their Crusader Castle. Today only the foundations are visible at the original site of the Mausoleum, but remnants of stones, can be seen within the walls and structure of Bodrum Castle. For the real history buff statues, sculptures and remains of the frieze from the Mausoleum are on display in The British Museum. The Castle has undergone several different uses over the years, houses have been built within, public baths installed, a minaret was added to the chapel (converting it into a mosque) and it has actually been used as a prison. During the First World War a warship fired on the Castle, causing structural damage to several towers and toppling a minaret. After the war the castle was used to house an Italian garrison who made some repairs to the towers before finally withdrawing in 1921. For almost 40 years after the Italian withdrawal the Castle stood idle and was used only to store artifacts from local excavations and shipwrecks. Finally though the castle has been

Blue Voyage at Gulf of Gokova

T

he pioneers of the blue voyage were two famous Turkish writers, Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli (better known as Fisherman of Halicarnassus) and Sabahattin Eyüboglu, and their circle of friends. They set out in a fishing boat from Bodrum to explore the shores to the south, beginning with the Gulf of Gökova, aiming to seek the roots of Anatolian Turkish culture in the ancient settlements of this part of Ionia. True to its spirit, the ideal itinerary for a Blue Voyage must allow you to best penetrate the sense and soul of places where you anchor. So, instead of rushing from one spot to the next, a program has to strike a balance between the time spent at sea, the time passed in various bays, villages or ancient sites and the time required to enjoy them. For those on a private cruise, we recommend an itinerary visiting as many places as possible without making the cruise tiresome. Cabin charter tours are scheduled in accordance with this philosophy, as well. While one may sail directly from

Bodrum to Knidos and Tekir cape in the course of one’s Blue Voyage, it is also possible to proceed by following the bay indented coastline of the gulf of Gokova. Vessels setting out from Bodrum to visit Gokova pass Karaada, famous for its hot springs and known in ancient times as Arkanessos, and then Pabuc Cape and arrive at Kargicik Bay. Before reaching here one sees a small island called Kistak that one may sail past on either side though care must be taken of a reef to its north. Kargicik is a large and fine bay. Yachts may anchor on its southern side. Taking a swim in its crystal-clear waters is a special delight. Before Kargicik Bay is Orak Island on which there are two bays, one on the east and one on the north. The best anchorages are along the northwestern side. Leaving here one passes Karaburun and reaches Alakisla Bay before which is Yildiz Island. One should sail close by the island and the mainland. One may anchor off the southwestern tip of the bay. After leaving Alakisla Bay one

passes Tekerek Limani, llgin Limani, and Kargili after which one arrives at Cokertme Bay, the best anchorage here. This place is surrounded by pine and olive trees and is sheltered against the winds. Inside the bay is Cokertme village, the western side of which is a good anchorage. Leaving Cokertme, one arrives at Camalti Bay, the jetty for Oren where one may visit the ruins of Keramos. Keramos is 48 km from Milas and one can reach it by road as well. The modern town of Keramos is located on the ruins of Keramos. A city of Carian origin, the date of its foundation is unknown though we know of its existence from the 5th Century onward because it was a member of the Delian League. Ruled by the Persians and then Alexander and passed variously through the hands of Rhodes, Rome, and Byzantium. At Keramos today one notices sound city walls’ and their gates remaining from Hellenistic times here and there. The ancient acropolis was between Mese Kayasi and Camtepe. November/December ’09 27

The three blocks visible are all that remains of the foundations of the temple of Zeus Khrsaoreus. There are also ruins of another temple, called Kursunlu today. This temple, located at the foot of the acropolis hill outside the city walls, is in a very ruined state. There are also remains of many Roman and Byzantine buildings at Keramos whose functions can no longer be discerned, though one of them was probably a basilica. On the southern side of the city is a Byzantine church. There are the remains of a big structure on the east at a place near the city walls. To the south, outside the city are the remains of a many columned structure called “Akyapi by the villagers today. Outside the city walls is a necropolis and in the cliffs there are rock tombs. Camalti Bay, where the modern jetty is, was the harbor of ancient Keramos. Leaving Oren and proceeding about 10 km past Karaburun, one reaches Akbuk Harbor. Situated at the foot of thickly wooded mountains, Akbuk Harbor is a very good harbor that is

sheltered against the western and northwestern winds. There is a cafe and a restaurant here and one may anchor on the jetty before the harbor or else west of it. From here one may proceed to Gokova Quay, the extreme end of the gulf of Gokova. Encircled by emerald-green mountains, one never tires of the beauty of Gokova. There are two concrete jetties here and one may anchor before the park. Proceeding from here overland to Marmaris, one has a magnificent view of Gokova. Six hundred meters below Sakar rock on the Gokova highway we find the ancient city of Idyma. Descending by means of a winding road, the city walls of the acropolis are visible here and there on the steep slopes. Below them are the remains of a medieval castle. Among the cliffs on the slope one can see rock tombs that resemble temples from the 4th Century B.C. Gasoline and water are available at Gokova jetty and the Forest Administration also has a number of facilities here. From Gokova jetty one may proceed to Sedir Island, which can also be reached by car. A road that branches off the Marmaris highway comes down to the jetty at the village of Gelibolu and from there you can get to Sedir Island in a rented boat. Boats are also available for rent in Tacbuku. On a hill east of Kizilkaya at the village of Gelibolu is the ancient city of Kallipolis, from which the present-day name of Gelibolu was derived. The ancient and medieval castles here reflect the lengthy past of this region. At the southern most end of Karaca Harbor, three or four miles from Sedir Island, one comes to Sogut Harbor before which is an island called Karacaada. This pine covered harbor is a place of marvelous beauty. A stream called Incedere discharges

ocus on DESTINATION into Sogut Harbor and in the mouth of the creek is a jetty. To the east is another jetty. This harbor is connected by road to Marmaris. After leaving this lovely bay surrounded by pine, laurel, oleander, and storax trees, we reach Canak Harbor. This place is enclosed by Andizli Cape and is protected against all winds. After this comes Degirmen Buku, a muchindented bay inside Kara and Zeytinli Islands. There are many places where yachts may take shelter here. The inlet behind the arm of land on the eastern side of the bay for example is a magnificent anchorage with jetties and a restaurant. Almost opposite it is another inlet called Ingiliz Limani (“English Harbor”) - According to local tradition, part of the British fleet concealed itself here during World War 1. On the southern side of Degirmen Bay is another anchorage where one may secure some supplies. Drinking water is also plentiful here. Passing Camli and Kormen Islands and leaving Degirmen Buku, we enter Kargili Bay 2.8 miles to the west. After leaving this sheltered inlet, there is a salt lagoon surrounded by pine trees. One may tie up onto the pines on shore. From here, one enters Tuzla Bay. There is a light at the mouth of this much-indented inlet, at the far end of which is another wooded lagoon. Some 800 m inside the inlet are the Karabuk reefs which one should watch out for because they are difficult to spot above the water. Vessels may anchor within the inlet and along the shore. Between Teke Cape and Taneli Cape are a group of seven islands, hence their Turkish name Yedi Adalar (Seven Islands). While the place is indeed a beautiful one, the numerous reefs here require caution. Pass Yedi Adalar is Dogu Bay located between Taneli Cape and the 4th island south of the eastern peninsula. Sakli Harbor is entered through here. On the northeastern side of the 4th island there is a inlet facing northeast. At its end is a concrete jetty. There are dangerous

reefs 400 m northwest of the 3 islands counting from Teke Bay. After leaving Yedi Adalar we come to the lovely bay of Gokceler Buku. This thickly wooded bay is closed to all winds. However when entering here, one should sail at a distance from the two small islets west of Kucuk Cati Bay. Kormen Harbor is about 5 km from Inceburun on which there is a light. There are two artificial harbors here created by breakwaters as well as a restaurant. Datca is 8 km away. The last calling place in the gulf of Gokova is Mersicik, which is located about 3 km from Mersicik Island. The bay is surrounded by forests. After leaving here, one proceeds by way of Tekir Buku, Cape Iskandil, and Deve Boynu to the main harbor at Knidos. Thus have completed our tour of the gulf of Gokova. After reaching Knidos, if one wishes to continue the Blue Voyage and set sails for new marvels, should head for the gulf of Hisaronu to see the shores of the Datca peninsula. The Blue Voyage offers the best possible escape on the water: a means of forgetting the rigors of everyday life for a while and just letting go of time. Most of yachts are of the traditional wooden variety, built in Bodrum. On a week week cruise,

travellers sail along the Gökova coast, through crystal clear waters frequented by schools of dolphins and into quiet bays, the harbors of small, picturesque villages and many a historic port. Between the beginning of May and the end of September, Turkey is extra busy with the height of summer bringing millions to the coastal regions. July and August days are long and hot and the nights are warm. June, the beginning of July and all of September offer a better combination, with warm days and cool evenings. The water in September can be especially warm in places. The months of May and October offer excellent sailing conditions and the opportunity to go trekking or fishing.

LOT Polish Airlines Golden Plane

n‌‌ LOT Polish Airlines has joined the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism in Central Europe. Close cooperation with the National Centre of Culture, the coordinator of the “Common Task” project, emphasizes the fact that the year 1989 was also a very important one in the history of Poland’s national carrier as it brought totally new opportunities. It was then that LOT started to operate modern and comfortable Boeing aircraft. As a national carrier, LOT Polish Airlines always participates in events that are important to all Poles. That is why LOT did not hesitate to join the Common Cause project organized by the National Centre of Culture to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism in Central Europe. The year 1989 also brought several important events for LOT: 60th anniversary celebrations, the introduction of new planes and the phasing out of the Russian-built aircraft. LOT was the first airline in the former Eastern Block to operate the American Boeing 767-200s. it was then that the Passenger Service Centre at the Warsaw Marriot Hotel was opened. Finally in the fall of 1989, for the first time after World War Two, LOT was the host of the IATA General Assembly. “This year LOT is celebrating its 80th birthday. We are a company with a long history and traditions but at the same time we are a modern company that is open to new ideas and interesting initiatives. NCC’s latest project that we participate in, combines all these values. It makes us even more proud that as a national carrier we can support such a special event in such an innovative way,” said Sebastian Mikosz, LOT Polish Airlines CEO. On 4the June, to mark the anniversary of the first free elections in Poland in 1989, a LOT Golden Plane carrying 160 people wearing golden jackets took off from Warsaw heading for Brussels. At the heart of Europe the LOT aircraft with its uncommon load of passengers will serve as a reminder that Poland was the country where the changes which brought about the fall of communism in Central Europe began. The Golden Plane was piloted by the “golden” captain and flight instructor Wacław Wieczorek, one of Poland’s most celebrated pilots, a nine-time gold medalist at major air sports competitions.. Over the next twelve months the Golden Plane will be flying in the fleet of LOT Polish Airlines, being a reminder of the anniversary of the 1989 democratic transformation in Europe and the involvement of Poland’s national carrier in this unusual project

MNG Orders Two More Airbus A330-200 Freighter Aircraft

n‌‌MNG Airlines, the largest Turkish all-cargo operator, has placed a follow-on order with Airbus for two more A330-200Fs to support its expanding cargo operations. These aircraft are in addition to the two firm orders for the A330-200F which the carrier placed in 2007, bringing its total orders for the type now to four aircraft and reaffirming its confidence in the type to expand its network as the freighter market gradually rebounds. Established in February 1996, MNG Airlines initially began to provide scheduled cargo services in November 1997 to Hahn (Germany) and Stansted (UK). Today, MNG Airlines has a fleet which includes nine Airbus A300Fs. Moreover, the new A330-200Fs will enable MNG Airlines to supplement its A300s while expanding operations on its trunk routes with lower cost-per-tonne, not only within Europe, but also to Middle East, Asia, China and USA. “We are pleased to add to our previous order for the A330-200F, so we can start implementing our growth strategy when the worldwide freighter market recovers from the recession,” said Mehmet Nazif Günal, founder and Chairman of MNG Companies Group. “We are fully convinced that the A330-200 Freighter aircraft, the newest member of the A330/A340 family, is the right aircraft to contribute to achieving our goals, and allow us to operate the most modern and efficient fleet of cargo aircraft in Turkey.” Airbus Chief Operating Officer – Customers, John Leahy said, “The A330-200F is the right aircraft at the right time. We are at the eve of a market recovery, and now is the time for airlines to prepare for future freight growth.” With a superior payload than initially anticipated, the A330-200F offers two operational configurations depending on the planned mission. The aircraft can carry up to 64 metric tonnes over 4,000 nautical miles / 7,400 km, or more than 69 metric tonnes up to 3,200 nautical miles / 5,930 km - non-stop. These range and payload capabilities will enable operators to grow their business by opening up or extending cargo routes they currently operate. Thanks to an optimized fuselage cross-section, it has the interior flexibility to carry a wide variety of pallet and container sizes for maximum interlining capability, offering 30 per cent more volume than any freighter in its class. Programme on Track The first A330-200 Freighter is now assembled and others are nearing completion. Fast progress is being made towards its first flight later this year and overall, the programme is fully on track for certification, followed by first deliveries in 2010.

Lufthansa Brings Back Onboard Wi-Fi

n‌‌ Three years after unplugging its in-flight Internet service because of insufficient demand, Lufthansa said that it would reintroduce a new and improved version of the service on most of its long-distance flights by the first half of 2010. FlyNet, on-board broadband Internet service, will permit inflight data transfer over standard GSM/GPRS mobile networks. Thanks to FlyNet, Lufthansa passengers will soon not only have WLAN Internet access but will also be able to send SMS messages by mobile phone and transfer data via smartphones such as PDA, iPhone or BlackBerry devices. Together with its new business partner Panasonic, Lufthansa aims to equip a major part of its long-range fleet with FlyNet within the first year of operation. With the relaunch of FlyNet, Lufthansa will again become the world leader in inflight connectivity. “In terms of communications, Lufthansa customers can look forward to a top-tier inflight service,” said Lufthansa CEO and Chairman Wolfgang Mayrhuber. “On long-haul routes, we offer business travellers, in particular, a range of communications options on a par with those available at powerful hotspots or upmarket hotels.” FlyNet thus completes the standardised communications products for Lufthansa passengers throughout the entire travel chain. Lufthansa is deliberately focusing on high bandwidth as the main requirement for the unrestricted use of such services as web surfing, email/file transfer including attachments and the Virtual Private Network (VPN). In addition, only wide bandwidth will enable potential future operational applications such as telemedicine for the transmission of a patient’s vital parameters to a ground station. FlyNet is impressively user-friendly. Passengers with a WLAN or GSM/GPRS-compatible device can log on from any point in the aircraft cabin, just like at any public hotspot. Depending on the device they are using (i.e. a laptop, mobile phone or a smart phone), passengers can choose to be billed via a mobile service provider or pay by credit card. Various different price models are planned – ranging from a rate by the hour to a monthly flat rate. Passengers should also be able to redeem Miles & More award miles for the use of WLAN Internet connections. The exact price for specific products will be announced at a later date. The service will gradually become available on all Lufthansa’s long-haul flights worldwide. With this new project, Lufthansa is building on its positive experience with Lufthansa FlyNet. As long ago as 15 January 2003, the world’s first scheduled flight providing broadband Internet access on board took off. Between May 2004 until the end of 2006, when the service was withdrawn by Lufthansa’s then partner Connexion by Boeing, broadband Internet connectivity via WLAN gained in popularity and the technology proved highly reliable. Subsequently, 69 of Lufthansa’s long-range aircraft were equipped with FlyNet, making the Lufthansa fleet the largest Internet-enabled fleet in the world, with about 30,000 users per month.
