Living the Past in the Present Travelling in time is a pleasurable experience for a tourist of our time. In Turkey, outside the cities, centuries of culture live on and, by adopting old methods of travel, you can experience centuries of rural life. This issue is about living the past in the present. I went to Bursa for a wedding and wanted to write about the traditional wedding venues of Bursa. However, on my arrival I was taken to the village of Cumalikizik to attend the opening of the Evliya Celebi Fountain by Hayrettin Ince, Assistant Manager of the Bursa Ministry of Culture and Tourism Office. Hayrettin Ince displayed such a vast local knowledge and enthusiastic approach that the Ministry should be proud to have such accomplished local managerial staff. I was more than impressed while walking the rough, rather narrow streets of Cumalikizik. The village was founded in 1300 and is still alive, happy and so beautiful today. I was living the Past in the Present as any other tourist would love to do. Therefore, I decided to use this issue to give coverage to this village. After my passionate explanation of the village, Mehmet Ongut went to see Cumalikizik for himself and took the photographs and wrote the cover story. In both he has caught the identity and spirit of the village. On the same day, from Cumalikizik, we went to the opening of the Evliya Celebi Fountain, commemorating the Ottoman Traveller Evliya Celebi and his travels around the outskirts of Bursa. The Governor of Bursa, Sahabettin Harput, opened the Fountain with a welcoming speech recalling Evliya’s adventures. In our Trek and Ride section, we have more about Evliya, written by the Ottoman historian Dr Caroline Finkel. Her new book describes Turkey’s first long distance walking and riding route is published now, so tourists can walk or ride in Evliya’s hoofprints into the living past. During my short visit, I found Bursa to be full of activities and the next day I found myself at the First Ageing and Elderly Congress. I could not cover the Wedding Venues in this issue but I am hoping that we will have a snapshot of Turkey’s wedding facilities for holidaymakers in the next issue.

Istanbul to Bid for 2020 Olympic Games

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday announced Istanbul’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. “We are here today to declare to the world our candidacy for the 2020 Olympic Games, which we consider extremely important for our country and people,” Mr. Erdogan said at the press conference on Saturday. “Our candidature to host the Olympics stemmed from our realization in the great importance of sports value and olympic spirit, which we believe play an active role in maintaining peace everywhere in the world,” he said. Istanbul is the world’s only city on two continents that has been a crossroads of trade, culture, learning and art for over 3,000 years as well as the capital of three of the greatest empires the world has known. It is no accident that Istanbul was the city the Eastern Roman emperors, the Byzantine dynasty and the Ottoman sultans chose to call home.

Istanbul offers a unique combination of accessibility, variety and natural beauty. And to that natural beauty, those empires added their own artistic and architectural masterpieces, making Istanbul one of the world’s great cultural treasure houses. “Symbol of Olympics; peace and well-being flame has been kept burning at our lands and especially in Istanbul for many centuries and enlightened the history. Therefore we say that Turkey is a country of Olympics and Olympic flame will look good at our country” added Mr. Erdogan. Erdogan announced that Istanbul will host World Wrestling Championship next month. He also informed that Istanbul, which hosts World Tennis Championships three years in a row, will host World Indoor Athletics Championships, FINA Short Course Swimming World Championships, World Golf Championships in 2012. 2013 Mediterranean Games, and 2014 FIBA World Basketball Championship for Women will also held in Turkey, announced Mr. Erdogan. Istanbul will be competing against Rome, Madrid, Tokyo and maybe Doha for the 2020 Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee has begun the selection process for the host city. Bids are due by September 1, 2011. The host city will be elected in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013 at the 125th IOC Session.

With higher fuel costs making it less economical to transport passengers to Caribbean cruise ports, the number of cruise ships plying Mediterranean waters in both summer and winter months over the next few years is likely to surge. The concept of winter cruising is not without challenges; sound itinerary planning and weatherproof shorex options are essential, but as more vessels are deployed out of traditional summer seasons, there is great scope for growth. Numerous high-level itinerary planners and marine operations decisionmakers are already scheduled to speak in Istanbul, with the recently announced additions bringing the total of cruise brands represented to thirteen. The event’s workshop sessions will give participating destinations an invaluable chance to meet one-to-one with speakers hosting workshop tables, all of whom are directly involved in deployment decisions for their brand. Gallipoli Art Prize-Australia Sydney NSW Hunter Valley artist Hadyn Wilson has won the $20,000 Gallipoli art prize for a painting honouring sacrifice in war. His winning entry was inspired by a 1930s work by sculpture Rayner Hoff whose work of the same name, Sacrifice, is at the Anzac War Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park. Wilson described his winning painting as “a meditation on war which combines the purposefulness of the military machine - represented by the grid like patterns of World War One trenches taken from aerial photographs

Istanbul’s first private museum that founded in 2004, Istanbul Modern is hosting modern and contemporary women artists from Turkey with the exhibition “Dream and Reality” until 22 January 2012. Istanbul Modern aims to put on the agenda Turkey’s social and cultural transformation via the work of women artists. The exhibition, which is centered on the position of women artists in modern and contemporary art, offers a new, alternative perspective on the sociocultural history of Turkey. Formed by curators Fatmagül Berktay, Levent Çalıkoğlu, Zeynep İnankur and Burcu Pelvanoğlu, the selection encompasses the production stretching from the mid-19th century to our day and incorporates many different disciplines from painting to video. The exhibition, which is also like a summary of modern and contemporary Turkish art, links close to 80 artists, including pioneering women artists the lives and productions about which we know little and whose names are almost forgotten; the rediscovered moderns; and women artists who for the last four decades have been shaping the contemporary art scene with their intellectual attitude and practical actions. The exhibition also opens to discussion the issue of female identity which in Turkey has taken shape via diverse sociocultural dynamics. Furthermore, in panels, symposia, and workshops held in conjunction with the exhibition, feminist theory, gender discussions, and women’s studies in Turkey will be analyzed by speakers from diverse disciplines

Apostle St. Philip’s Tomb Discovered in Turkey The tomb of Saint Philip, one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ, was discovered in Turkey’s southwestern province of Denizli. The discovery took place in Hierapolis (Pamukkale) at the ancient excavation site of Denizli in Turkey, The Italian Francesco D’Andria, head of the excavation team, was quoted as saying. People believed that the tomb of Saint Philip was in the “hill of the dead” in Hierapolis, but D’Andria’s team discovered a new church ruin 40 meters from the hill where the tomb of Saint Philip the Apostle lies.“The discovery of the tomb of

St Philip, who is a very important figure in Christianity, will make a tremendous impression in the world,” D’Andria said shortly after the great success of his team. D’Andria said archeologists had been working for years to look for the tomb of the Biblical figure, and finally, they managed to reach the monument while working on the ruins of a newly-unearthed church in Hierapolis. Hierapolis is an ancient city and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city, famous for its historical hot springs used as a spa since the 2nd century, is a

mixture of Pagan, Roman, Jewish and early Christian influences. Ancient tradition associates Hierapolis with St. Philip the Apostle, who is believed to have died in the city around 80 AD. The apostle, who preached in Greece, Syria, and Phrygia, is believed to have been martyred in Hierapolis. Legend said that St. Philip was crucified upside-down or martyred by beheading. After the apostle’s death, an octagonal tomb named “The Martryium” was erected for him where he is believed to have been martyred.

Salih Cene Elected Director of Skal International After serving at all levels for the last 32 years, immediate past Councilor for Turkey and a senior tourism professional Salih Cene has been elected as the Director of Skal International (SI). The election took place today at Skal International (SI) Annual Congress which is taking place in Turku/Finland between 18 and 23 September. Salih Cene said, “I believe that Skal International should play an important role in developments and changes in tourism. I agree that Skal should be a trusted voice in the tourism industry and should emphasise responsible tourism. In order to take our place as a trusted advisory body, Skal’s status should be well explained to the world of tourism.” “The most important asset that differentiates Skal International from other organizations is its membership mosaic. Not only its presence in five continents and over 90 countries, but also its wide range of membership categories that no other tourism organization has under one roof (tour operators, hoteliers, airline representatives, guides, tourism press and many more). This wide representation should make Skal a trusted voice within World Tourism, especially in two areas. Skal could use this position to set: - the “Code of Ethics” in the Travel & Tourism Industry. - the principles of business between various sectors of the Travel & Tourism Industry (eg. standards for contracts and operational rules between Travel Trade, Hotels, Airlines, etc.)

By achieving these two missions, Skal may also become the arbitrator in national and international disputes in the Travel & Tourism Industry.

Cumalıkızık T

By Mehmet Öngüt

ucked in a narrow valley between Uludağ1 and the bustling city of Bursa, a sleepy Ottoman village is in the process of making its mark in Turkey and abroad, and it tries to do that by being itself. Cumalıkızık traces its origins to the time of Sultan Osman, the founder of the Ottoman Empire. It is one of the

seven ¨kızık¨ settlements, which were to play a key role in the conquest of Bursa by Sultan Orhan in 1326. Bursa subsequently became the first capital of the empire. Kızık is attributed to a branch of Oğuz Turks from Central Asia and it means “strict in law and full of strength”. Today, only five kızık villages remain and Cumalıkızık is by

far the best preserved. According to Heath Lowry, it is impossible to understand the Ottoman Empire without understanding Bursa2 . What better place to start a trip than Cumalıkızık, a village close in spirit to life at the outset of the Ottoman Empire? Even the mukhtar (village headman)

seems to embody the newly restored frontier spirit: “I want people who come to Cumalıkızık to visit Bursa, not the other way around¨ he says. Despite the fiery statement, he seems gentle, intelligent, modest and dedicated. We meet late in the evening, because “daytimes are used to address the issues of the village”. Cumalıkızık today figures in the temporary cultural heritage list of UNESCO and the issues far surpass the boundries of the village, ocasionally igniting fierce debates

among architects and intellectuals in Turkey. Briefly swallowed into the surrounding municipalities which make up the interminable expansion of Bursa, Cumalıkızık has regained its village status. This autonomy is necessary to guarantee its future and to protect its past. Only a few kilometers up a winding road from a suburb of Bursa, Cumalıkızık is indeed a world apart. Its narrow lanes are negotiated by tractors as well as cars. The houses

have double doors to allow the flow of agricultural produce. Typical of Ottoman houses, doors open onto courtyards and the ground floor is comprised of the storage area or granary. The living quarters include a “hayat”, a semi-open gallery, a versatile space around which many activities can take place. Ottoman houses valued privacy therefore the interiors can rarely be seen from the street. The houses in Cumalıkızık are no exception but these days they are likely to have November’2011

been converted into guesthouses or restaurants, providing the visitor with the opportunity to explore on a whim. An exceptional architectural feature of the village is a narrow passage called Cin Geçidi. Locals claim it to be the world’s narrowest street. You can’t pass through it if you have excess baggage, that is to say, too many sins!

funerary use of calabash in great detail when the other, seeing the student’s expression intervened laughing: “You can also use them as lamps, that’s the recent fashion”. The Etnography Museum is currently closed for restoration, but one can visit the private Ottoman Folk Dresses and Handicrafts Museum in Bursa. It is the recent gift of an avid collector, Esat Uluumay to the city’s cultural life. Ahmet Kuş, who is the village head also mentions that Uluumay has

been instrumental in the restoration of Cumalıkızık. On the subject of museums the muhktar is resolute. He is against the emerging reputation of the village as an “open air museum”. “What museum?” he chuckles, “This is a living village, and that’s the whole point”. There is another aspect that is as significant as the historical heritage in the area: Water. The entire valley is sprinkled with streams, rivers, waterfalls and hot springs. Bursa

and the surrounding area has always conjured up images of water. Seventeenth century Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi, following a long description of acquatic wonders of the area claims: ¨To talk about Bursa, is to talk purely of water¨3. So grab your wild berries from the village market and head to a river in the surrounding area. After all, picnics are still the favourite pastime of Turks, now as in the days of the Empire.

Riding the Evliya Çelebi Way A new sustainable tourism route focusing on Bursa: the Evliya Çelebi Way.

T

By Caroline Finkel

hroughout this year, people in Turkey and beyond have been celebrating the 400th anniversary of the birth of the great Ottoman traveller, Evliya Çelebi. Evliya was a gentleman-adventurer and courtier of the sultans, who travelled the empire and more distant lands for over 40 years, and recounted his journeys in ten monumental volumes—the Seyahatname, or Book of Travels. UNESCO has recognised his quatercentenary and declared him one of its ‘notable people’ of 2011. It was to Bursa, in 1640, that Evliya made his first expedition. He marvelled at the natural beauty of the place, at the abundance of trees and flowers, and at the plentiful water running down from springs on the mountain above. He also rode up the great massif of Uludağ, reaching its highest peak. His visit

42

November’2011

lasted 40 days, and he describes in his Book of Travels the magnificent works of architecture that he saw, as well as the people of the city and how they conducted their daily lives. Bursa was also a stop on Evliya’s 1671 pilgrimage to Mecca. The early stages of this journey have now been recreated as a 600km-long cultural route based on his Book of Travels, called the Evliya Çelebi Way. The Way approaches Bursa from Iznik and Yenişehir, and then turns east through the glorious countryside along the northern foothills of Uludağ to Inegöl, before turning south to follow the course of a river rising high in the Domaniç range. The route continues through mountains and across plains to Kütahya, Afyonkarahisar and Uşak, and ends at Simav.

MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine

Evliya and his companions travelled on horseback, as was usual until relatively recent times. The Evliya Çelebi Way is Turkey’s first equestrian route, and also a long distance trail for walker and bikes. The Way can be travelled in its entirety— some 25 days on horseback, and about 21 days for the walking route (which omits some of the plains)—or for a few days at a time. Bursa is one of the main focuses of the Way. An attractive holiday option is to spend two or three days in that city with Evliya as your guide, visiting the places he saw, and then head out to travel the rural areas beyond, either on horse, on foot, or by bike. You will receive the warmest of welcomes from the people who live and work in the countryside today, and enjoy an experience that few visitors to Turkey share.

The Evliya Çelebi Way is in its infancy, but already tourists from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA have ridden the Bursa section of the route. Horseback expeditions along the Way are organised in summer, and although there are as yet few places locally where horses can be rented for shorter trips, we expect there to be more soon. Walkers and bikers have no such logistic

problems, and can set out at will. Bursa Metropolitan Municipality is working to organise accommodation in villages along the Way, but camping or staying in hotels in local towns is a practical option for the present. The guidebook to the Evliya Çelebi Way is hot off the press. GPS waypoints can be downloaded from the dedicated website, and there are plans to place signposts at

frequent intervals. We look forward to seeing you on the Way, a new and exciting Turkish cultural route that honours a remarkable individual. The development of the Evliya Çelebi Way is supported by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality.
