INTRODUCTION This Rally Guide has been produced to give all our potential entrants the background they need regarding this event. They have no regularity power and are produced for your information only.

WELCOME Nicky and the organising team from Quinton Motor Club would like to extend a warm welcome to you all to this year’s event.

The event is based at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells. Builth Wells is a market town in the heart of Powys, Mid-Wales, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Wye and Irfon in the upper Wye Valley. The town is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. The spectacular Elan Valley and the Brecon Beacons are only a short drive away. Builth is ideally positioned to give access to the classic gravel stages that have been used in recent years by Wales Rally GB and the legendary asphalt of the Epynt military ranges.

For those of you who have not joined us before we have set out below a brief history of our 37 year old event that shows how it has grown from very humble beginnings to be named in 2015 as the best round of the Pirelli MSA Welsh National Stage Rally Championship and in 2016 to win the Bill Turner Trophy for the best event in the Ravenol BTRDA Rally Series.

HISTORY OF THE EVENT Quinton Motor Club organised their first non-championship forest rally in 1980. A full entry of 90 cars left Bengry’s Car Auctions in Leominster for 35 stage miles in Radnor Forest. The entry fee was £42. The event was well received and was included in the Welsh Stage Rally Championship the following year. In its early years the event did not have its own forest allocation so moved around Wales using various forests.

1981 saw the event in the Forest of Dean starting from the cattle market in Gloucester and finishing in Monmouth. The City of Gloucester had never played host to this sort of event before so the Mayor was present to flag away the 115 starters. Although the event was only in its second year it received its first works entry when Dealer Team Vauxhall entered a DTV Chevette for Tony Pond and Mike Nicholson. As they were only out testing for the forthcoming RAC Rally they did not book into the final control. So unfortunately the name of one of the countries favourite rallying sons does not appear on the winners list, that honour goes to the ‘King of the Dean’ - Graham Elsmore.

The early 80’s saw the event in Ceri forest and then Hafren before a trip to north Wales to use Penmachno and Clocaenog in 1985. Based at the Waterloo Hotel in Betws-y-Coed the event attracted its second works entry when Austin Rover entered Malcolm Wilson and Nigel Harris in a brand new Group B Metro 6R4. They were doing some testing about 6 weeks before the RAC Rally, the spectators were wall to wall, no one could quite believe it.

The relationship with the BTRDA started in 1986 when the event was invited to be a round of the BTRDA Clubman’s Championship, promotion to the Gold Star Championship was achieved in 1992.

1986 also saw the event attain its own forest allocation and settle into Llandrindod Wells, which was to be the headquarters town for the next 12 years. The event used various combinations of Ceri, Sarnau, Caio, Esgair Dafydd, Crychan and Brechfa forests. However the move was always southwards so the event left Llandrindod to move to Llandovery and finally where we are now at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells.

The establishing of Wales Rally GB in south Wales opened up more gravel stage mileage on the Epynt military ranges. The event was able to utilise these fabulous stages to refine the route to the very compact format that exists today.

Notable victors in recent years have included the son of the 1985 winner when Matthew Wilson won the event in 2004 at the tender age of 17 years 163 days. The days are important because in 2006 Andreas Mikkelsen won the event the day after he passed his UK driving test at 17years and 16 days.

EVENT FORMAT This year’s event will consist of three rallies: •

The Nicky Grist Stages. This is an 8 stage, 45 mile National B gravel rally for all our usual friends and championships. It will take place on Saturday 8th July 2017

•

The Nicky Grist Stages 100. This is a National A two day mixed surface rally which counts towards the BRC Championship.

It will consist of 45 gravel stage miles on Saturday 8th July and 74 sealed surface asphalt stage miles, over 12 stages on Sunday 9th July. The gravel stages on Saturday will be exactly the same as the National B Rally.

Spencer Sport Acropolis Rally. This is a 12 stage, 74 mile National B asphalt rally that is part of the MAXXIS MSA English Championship. The asphalt stages on Sunday will be exactly the same as the National A Rally.

In line with the requirements of the MSA, entrants on these rallies will be seeded together in their order of expected performance on both Saturday and Sunday. On returning to HQ at the Showground in Builth on Saturday evening the usual festivities will be held for the Nicky Grist Stages with the awards being presented as the cars finish, whilst the competitors in the Nicky Grist 100 will return to the service area in the Showground. A service time of 2 hours will be available to make any necessary modifications to the cars for the Sunday stages.

Competitors will be required to put their cars in Parc Fermé overnight. Parc Fermé will close at 22:00hrs.

Following on from lessons learnt last year the Sunday event will start later at 08:40hrs.

This will give the Army chance to clear the ranges should any of their overnight exercises overrun. Furthermore to give recovery time within the schedule competitors will return to the Showground for full service, something we didn’t do last year when cars remained on the ranges for remote service The first competitor is due at the finish in the Showground at 16:00hrs.

RALLY4WALES At this point we would like to record our thanks to all the team at Rally4Wales whose tireless efforts have resulted in this event being able to take place.

Last years event was given special dispensation to run by the MSA as the date was well after the contract for road repairs between the MSA and NRW had expired. This resulted in the use of roads that had not been repaired from previous rallying activity. This year we have incorporated as much single usage as we can get from our NRW roads.

ENTRY ELIGIBILITY All the rallies have been included on the 2017 FIA International Sporting Calendar to allow foreign competitors to compete.

The Nicky Grist Stages 100 is open to holders of an MSA Competition Licence valid for 2017 National A Stage rallies or above.

The Nicky Grist Stages and the Spencer Sport Acropolis Rally are open to holders of an MSA Competition Licence valid for 2017 National B Stage rallies or above, and who are members of the clubs and/or registered contenders in the championships listed in the event regulations.

RECONNAISSANCE Nicky Grist Stages 100 & Spencer Sport Acropolis competitors ONLY Details will be contained in the regulations for the event, but as a guide for your early information the recce will take place on Friday 7th July as follows: Nicky Grist 100 competitors (except National Cup Competitors) from 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs.

BRC National Cup and Spencer Sport Acropolis competitors from 14:00hrs to 17:00hrs Reconnaissance will be conducted in accordance with the 2017 MSA British Rally Championship Sporting Regulations.

Subjective route notes will be allowed for this event. They MUST however be purchased from Patterson Pacenotes, details will be available in the regulations.

FACILITIES AT THE ROYAL WELSH SHOWGROUND Scrutineering, signing on, trailer park, Saturday & Sunday Service Areas and the finish for the events will be held at the Showground. The headquarters will be in the Hafod-a-Hendre building, where a bar and a hot meal will be available on Friday and Saturday evening.

Camping will be available on Friday and Saturday night in the ‘Old Internal’ car park area of the Showground (directly behind Hafod-a-Hendre) for £15 per night per unit, with a hook-up point. Requests to camp should be made at the same time as entering the event. Campers will be provided with a sticker that must be displayed on their tent/camper van/motor home/caravan to avoid being evicted by the Showground security staff.!

There is NO camping in the showground on Thursday night. Any competitor needing to arrive on Thursday MUST get special permission from the Secretary of the Meeting.

The events contract with the Showground does not start until Friday. Any concessional camping on Thursday will be at £30 per unit.

The Neuad Henllan, next to HQ, will be serving cooked breakfasts on both Saturday and Sunday mornings from 06:00hrs for £8, payable when purchasing.

There will be a Hall’s catering unit in the service area on both days.

Helicopters. Any competitor who requires the ability to land a helicopter for anyone associated with his presence on the event (himself, his crew, sponsor, family, friends, etc.) should contact the Showground directly on – 01982 553683. Flying onto or over the Epynt Military Ranges will require permission from the Range Operations Room. Details will be made available upon application to the Secretary of the Meeting.
