Loy Krathong Festival
This is a Thai festival whose name could be translated “to float a basket,” and comes from the tradition of making krathong or buoyant decorated baskets, which are then floated on a river, lake or pond. Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, thus the exact date of the festival changes every year and is on November 13 this year. For centuries, people have gathered on this day that marks the end of the rainy season. In some provinces, thousands of paper lanterns are released into the sky. It is believed that floating away one’s bad luck (loy) on these flower baskets (krathong) brings blessings and good luck. A $5 material fee is payable at class. American Sign Language
Did you know that American Sign Language is the third most used language in America? A vital tool for those who deal with the hearing and speech impaired, ASL has an expressive beauty all its own. In this series of courses, you’ll begin with a vocabulary of 200 signs. Courses are designed to be taken sequentially, with subsequent courses reviewing and reinforcing your previous learning. With fun games and lots of emphasis on practice, you will be well on your way to conversing in ASL. This class is also great for anyone regularly dealing with the general public. Spanish Quieres hablar Español? This series provides a foundation of Spanish grammar, while introducing basic vocabulary for daily situations. Courses are designed to be taken sequentially, with subsequent courses reviewing and reinforcing your previous learning. Conversational practice and other exercises are led in a fun and no-pressure atmosphere, making the courses ideal for beginners or as a refresher for those with “rusty” Spanish skills. A series of four classes is approximately equivalent to one year of high school or one semester of college Spanish. Instructor: Tyrel Nelson. Driver’s Education with Safeway Driving School Safeway Driving School has been graduating teen drivers in the Twin Cities area for 50 years. Safeway’s focus is creating safe, responsible teen drivers. Classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons emphasize defensive driving techniques tailored for the inexperienced teen driver while targeting to influence the invincible teen attitude. All Safeway’s instructors are licensed by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Class Instruction prepares the student to take the Minnesota permit test and begin the responsibility of driving.
students are confident that it is a Safeway car picking up the student for a lesson. Students can get picked up for their behind-the-wheel lesson from home, school or work. Parent involvement is required to produce safe, responsible teen drivers. It is critical that parents practice regularly with their student drivers. The state requires that students have a minimum of 50 hours of practice (15 hours at night). Parent classes are offered monthly at Safeway’s nearby classrooms.
The 30 hours of classroom is structured into 10 independent lessons. If a student misses a lesson, they can make up that exact lesson number at the next session or at one of Safeway’s other classroom locations.
After class is completed, students who are 15 years old are eligible to take their permit test at any Minnesota exam center. The permit test is not provided during the class.
Have questions about the curriculum or driving education? Contact Safeway at: safewaydrivingschool.com or 651-3519150.
Behind-the-wheel instruction includes six hours of driving in three, two-hour private lessons. All driving is done in a Safeway car on city streets, highways and freeways with a responsible, licensed Safeway instructor. Safeway recommends students take their first lesson 2-3 weeks after receiving their permit card and after 5 hours of practice driving. Students have one year after completing classroom to finish their behind-thewheel lessons.

District welcomes Dr. Silvy Un Lafayette St. Louis Park Public Schools is pleased to announce that Dr. Silvy Un Lafayette joined the school district in July 2019 as the new Director of Assessment, Research and Evaluation.
Peter Hobart Elementary School Receives Mental Health Grant
“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Lafayette to the St. Louis Park Public Schools team,” said Superintendent Astein Osei. “She has the capacity to influence the work we are doing which will help accelerate us to our desired future.” Since 2012, Dr. Lafayette has brought her research background into school leadership roles. In her five years with St. Paul Public Schools, she served as an Administrative Intern and Administrator in the Office of Leadership Development. For the last two years, she has been an Assistant Principal at Brooklyn Center Middle School and High School STEAM. In these roles, she used her training in theory, research and data analysis to support the development of educators working to close opportunity gaps for students from underrepresented and marginalized communities. As the Director of Assessment, Research and Evaluation for St. Louis Park Public Schools, Dr. Lafayette will use her expertise as an educator and education researcher to help all students graduate and be college and career ready. In addition, one of her long-term goals is to bring student voice into the school evaluation and improvement process. Dr. Lafayette is Cambodian American and was raised in Rosemount, Minnesota. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston College. After teaching middle school on the east coast, she returned to Minnesota to complete a Ph.D. in Education: Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. Her research interests include topics in education related to race, equity, culturally relevant pedagogy and the experiences of students from immigrant backgrounds. She currently lives in North Minneapolis with her husband Lee and their son Justus.

Peter Hobart Elementary School has received a $32,000 grant from PrairieCare Child & Family Fund to support mental health education and training to those who support or provide educational services to youth. “We are excited and grateful to receive this generous grant from the PrairieCare Child & Family Fund as it will allow us to train our staff more deeply in the use of Restorative Practices in response to what would have previously been disciplinary action,” Director of Student Services Tami Reynolds said. “The use of Restorative Practices help us to better address
underlying issues for student behavior. These new practices will allow us to teach our students how to repair harm and build stronger relationships with each other. This approach will help us build community and strengthen relationships between students, staff and school community.” St. Louis Park Public Schools was one of seven school districts in the state of Minnesota to receive funding from PrairieCare when the grants were announced in May. PrairieCare Child & Family Fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit that supports mental health innovations in education, services and research.

District Forms Elementary Out-of-School Time (OST) Taskforce In preparation for the new school startend times beginning Fall 2020, the school district is recruiting stakeholders to form a taskforce to create a robust menu of out-of-school time options to meet the overall health, academic and social/ developmental needs of all K-5 students and families. The taskforce will develop recommendations for out of school time including academic programs, enrichment and recreation opportunities, and childcare options. Out-of-school time means academic, enrichment, recreation, and childcare opportunities, before and after school. A recommendation is defined as a menu of various options for staff to consider when developing a program. Expectations for the taskforce include: • members will review extensive research, best practices, and input from stakeholders to inform their work; • members will be mindful of the school district and community education budgets and the economic impact to families; • members will seek consensus to make one or more recommendation(s) to the administration by December 2019; and • members are expected to talk about the work during their daily routines, and encourage the engagement, input and feedback of all stakeholders.

Heart of the Matter Community Discussions
Heart of the Matter Community Discussion is a series created and sponsored by the Community Education Advisory Council (CEAC). We will facilitate a community discussion on different topics each fall, winter and spring. This fall we are partnering with the St. Louis Park Family Services Collaborative.
Understanding Childhood Trauma; Building Community Support Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are experiences that harm children’s developing brains. These negative experiences lead to changing how children respond to stress and damage their immune systems so profoundly that the effects show up decades later. ACEs cause much of society’s burden of chronic disease, mental illness, and are at the root of violence. Our knowledge of ACEs comes from the groundbreaking public health research study conducted in 1998 by the Kaiser Permanente Health System. L181F19 We’ll discuss the five parts of ACEs science:. • The original ACEs study and research on child adversity and resilience • How ACEs impact brain development •
How ACEs impact lifelong health
•
How ACEs impact generations, including historical trauma
•
How trauma informed & resilience building practices help heal ACEs
