Arts & Crafts/Cards & Games Adventures in Crochet: Beyond the Beginning

This class is for students who know the basic stitches: single, double and half double crochet and who have made at least a few projects. In this class, we will explore working with patterns, measuring and adjusting gauge to ensure that things fit, finishing techniques, Tunisian crochet and broomstick lace. We will have time for sharing your struggles with projects you have started and for looking at projects you may want to start. Join us for a relaxing, friendly and fun class. Students should bring at least one skein of light colored acrylic or wool yarn, scissors, clip on stitch markers, and crochet hooks sizes H, I, J and K to the first class. Drawing Without Tears Using a Camera Lucida

Do you envy people who can draw? Wish you could? In this class, we will use a simple child’s toy Camera Lucida (Crayola Sketch Wizard) in the way that many art historians believe the renaissance artists used newly available lenses and curved mirrors to create some of their greatest masterpieces. In class, we will work from photos, either on paper or viewed with a smart phone or tablet. The camera lucida projects a ghost image of the photo onto your drawing. You then trace the important features and go on to complete the drawing. In class, we will discuss line, shading and blending techniques, composition and other artistic considerations. There will be a $20 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the first class, for which you will be provided a Sketch Wizard toy. (If you already have one, bring it to class, and the fee will be waived.) You will also need to get some drawing materials, but we will discuss what to buy at our first class Instructor: Judy Goebel L482F19 Thurs., Oct. 24 – Nov. 14 10 a.m. – Noon Art Room Member: $30 Nonmember: $35

The first night is dedicated to working on your project, having fun, and discovering your creative side. The second night is using grout, so make sure to dress for a mess and bring some old towels. After your project is finished, you will learn about glass cutting, mosaic resources, and other types of mosaics. Material fees are payable to the instructor the first night. Each cross is $15 and you can make as many as you want. A variety of signs will be available in different sizes and prices, $14 – $30 range. Instructor: Lindsey Guetter L115F19 Fri. Alcohol Ink Painting Workshop

Experiment with alcohol inks on Yupo paper. The non-absorbent nature of Yupo means it will not buckle, no matter how much water you put on it, and it makes colors more vibrant and brilliant than on standard papers as all the color sits on the surface. Alcohol inks are pigment-intense and vibrant, free-flowing and filled with an energy all their own. You will leave the workshop with knowledge of a new technique that you can then take home and expand your artist interest. All supplies included in class fee. Clive’s of Champlin

Lola’s Lakehouse is on beautiful Lake Waconia. The menu features American fare with a New England influence. The restaurant features a full bar area and lakeside dining on the deck overlooking the Marina on Lake Waconia. They have something for everyone; steaks, burgers, and wood-oven pizzas, along with their fabulous selection of fresh seafood, including a raw bar serving oysters on the half-shell. The signature seafood stew pot and the maple walnut pie are just a few samples of the house specialties. Lola’s Lakehouse is one of the few restaurants in the Twin Cities area to be located on lakefront property. This is the perfect place to enjoy a meal in the restaurant or on the open-air deck overlooking the lake. What a way to spend an afternoon great food and beautiful view. Lenox Foundation/Center News Lenox Foundation Board

Letter From The President

Hello from the Lenox Foundation: As I write this I am enjoying our long awaited summer. I hope you are too. When you read my letter, you will still be enjoying our too short summer, but looking forward to colorful Fall days. The Lenox Foundation has just wrapped up its 32nd year of supporting the St. Louis Park Senior Program. We would not be offering any financial support, if it were not for all of your contributions. We are very happy to announce that the Foundation was able to contribute over $13,000 to the Lenox Senior Program this year. See picture at right. This is a busy time for the Foundation as we bring ice cream to the July – August Birthday Party in the Park, organize fundraisers at Parkway Pizza and Nelson’s Meats, and begin our annual letter campaign. The fundraiser with Nelson’s Meats will be on Monday, August 5, 2019. For every pulled pork or shredded chicken sandwich purchased on August 5, five dollars will be given to the Lenox Foundation. The Parkway Pizza fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, September 24. The Lenox Foundation will receive 10% of all sales made on that day. We are grateful to our community partners, Nelson’s Meats and Parkway Pizza. Both of these events are advertised elsewhere in the Newscaster. We are pleased to announce that Sherrill Mozey and Rich Erickson are returning to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. We are especially pleased to announce that we have a brand new Board member, Suzanne Pettinari. Many of you may know her from class participation, but if you don’t know her, you soon will. We were so sad to see Linda Asche leave the Senior Program, but that sadness was tempered by our new liaison Angie Martinez Grande. See you at Lenox Community Center! Center News Senior Program Advisory Council

We are all aware of the many ways to keep our mind and body healthy. We walk and exercise. We watch what we eat. But we can always do more. The latest medical research shows that one important thing can be added to our list of things to do. We should all LEARN something new to keep our brain active and functioning at its best. What does that mean? Take a class at Lenox is a great way to learn and stimulate our brain. But something as simple as reading a mystery book instead of a love story or if you are right handed brush your teeth with your left hand. If you knit and have for many years that comes easily so learn to crochet instead and actually make an item. Play a new song on the piano that you have never played before. When you go to the grocery store how about trying to drive there in an entirely different route. LEARN something new is the important thing. And continue to learn. Become a Life Long Learner. Look up something in the computer that you can learn about. Study another religion. Paint or draw. Now that we are working on learning something new so our brain can stay healthy, let's also remember to eat properly. THREE meals a day. They do not have to be large. Maybe only a salad or some fruit could be a meal. The doctors tell all of us to exercise. That can be simple by just doing movement. If you sit in front of the TV for more than an hour, get

up and move around the house during a commercial. I have started to wash the bathroom sink during a commercial. Next time it was time for me to move, I washed the kitchen sink. I opened up my junk drawer one day and looked at it and immediately shut it… so I do not recommend that job. That junk drawer is scary. My point today is to talk to you about staying healthy. It does not have to be a huge job. Just a continuous job. If we can learn something new it will also keep us feeling younger. We will have something new to talk to our friends about. And by eating three meals a day with less processed foods it will definitely make us more alert and healthier. You have the Lenox Community Center that can add another dimension to our life as well. Look over this Newscaster and you can see all the activities that just might fit into your life style. Take a class or do an activity that perhaps is not really that interesting to you… but try it and maybe you will enjoy it or meet a new friend. A national project by Home Instead Senior Care.

One call, wall-to-wall, home clean-out. Maximize re-use and minimize waste.

When your movers are done, it’s time to Empty the Nest! When you make the call to Empty the Nest, we take care of the rest. We clean-out your home, wall-to-wall, to ready it for its next family. We donate used clothing, household goods, and non-perishable food left behind to area charities, and give you their donation receipt. We identify and save materials from your home that may otherwise be thrown away as trash and disperse them to recycling resources to limit waste in overloaded landfills. We sell the used furniture and unique items you no longer need, to offset your home clean-out costs. If you find yourself facing a move, contact us. We're here to help. Empty the Nest. A simple mission that benefits everyone.
