HOST CITY

LJUBLJANA Often referred to as the hidden gem of Europe, Ljubljana, the small yet vital capital of Slovenia, is a stylish city offering a blend of old charm and new cool, as well as a relaxed atmosphere.

Both its residents and numerous visitors see Ljubljana as an urban centre built on a human scale. With a population of 295,000, out of 2,100,000 in Slovenia, it is an easily manageable destination with vast pedestrian zones, and a compact, walking and cycling city par excellence. Developing with a clear vision, Ljubljana places the quality of life at the forefront; as a mid-sized European city, it has preserved its small-town friendliness, while offering most content that much larger capitals have.

6

A blend of Alpine & Mediterranean flair

Ljubljana features a wealth of history, arts and culture, excellent gastronomy and an atmosphere that is both Central European and Mediterranean. Many would add it is a safe, green, youthful and multilingual city. While respecting tradition, where authenticity and genuine hospitality play an important role, it is a knowledge-based, dynamic, open and future-oriented society. Visitors like exploring the narrow cobbled streets in the Old Town, which functions as a welcoming lounge and is, together with a wider city centre area, closed to car traffic. One of its landmarks and main attractions is the medieval Ljubljana Castle, which has stood on top of a hill above the historic quarter for centuries. The city coats-of-arms depict the castle tower as well as the symbol of Ljubljana – a mighty dragon, which also boasts having its very own, central bridge, named after him.

7

The cosy atmosphere along the Ljubljanica riverbanks, with its thriving café scene, a collection of intricately crafted bridges over the river, luscious urban gardens, the Baroque and Art Nouveau heritage as well as numerous other historic, gastronomic and cultural attractions harmoniously blend together into the city’s image and character. On top, the works designed by the world-renowned architect Jože Plečnik, which were recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, have given a unique aesthetic accent to his native city.

8

Ljubljana’s Green DNA

The title of European Green Capital 2016, awarded by the European Commission, has significantly strengthened Ljubljana’s recognition and city brand worldwide, putting it on the map of the leading sustainable, green, innovative, visitor friendly and most liveable capitals. As a legacy, this award is now an ongoing project and a part of the city’s DNA. The vast green areas in the city are complemented by a number of attractions amid pristine nature in the Ljubljana Region, which offers a host of possibilities for outdoor activities, as well as cultural and culinary delights.

The most recent international accolade

In February 2022 Ljubljana received the highly coveted title of European Best Destination 2022, based on 75,000 votes by travellers from 182 countries from around the globe. The City of Ljubljana is proud and overjoyed by this new recognition, which reaffirms its committment to keep the sustainable development of the city at the core of its endeavours.

And how do we nickname Ljubljana?

By changing just one letter in our city’s name, you get the word “Ljubljena”, meaning “The Beloved”. It’s only right that the capital of the only country in the world holding LOVE in its name has a romantic twist...

The legend of the hotel In 1552, Maximillian II was the Archduke of Austria and about to become the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He was 25 years old and had recently married Mary of Spain. On his way from Spain, he was bringing one of his wedding presents: an elephant called Suleiman. At that time, the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent was Austria’s most terrible enemy. Therefore, domesticating such a powerful animal under that name was a symbol of great power. Maximilian stopped at the best inn in Ljubljana with his escort and the wonderful animal, which impressed the population tremendously. The hotel Slon was later built on the site of this inn. The memory of Suleiman the elephant was still very strong in the city, so the guesthouse, and later the hotel, were named Slon (the Slovenian word for elephant). 11

SPECIAL EVENT VENUES The city landmark Ljubljana Castle

The Ljubljana Castle has been a symbol or crown of the city for more than 900 years. Its construction began in the 12th century and it later acquired its present shape through several reconstructions between the mid-15th century and the 17th century. The Viewing tower (1848) provides a stunning 360° view of the city, eying the Alps to the north and the Ljubljana Marshes nature park to the south-west. The castle, which can also be accessed by funicular, has an excellent culinary offer, a rich exhibitions programme and is a popular venue for different cultural and social events. And a must-see when visiting Ljubljana.

City Museum of Ljubljana home to the oldest wooden wheel in the world

Since its foundation in 1935, the City Museum has found its permanent abode in the mid 17-th century Auersperg Palace. It showcases the chronological presentation of Ljubljana’s millennial heritage with precious authentic artefacts, among which the world's oldest wooden wheel with an axle, discovered in the nearby Ljubljana Marshes, is the most prominent. The Museum's exhibitions and events serve to popularise their collections and broader activities, encouraging the dialogue between heritage, art, and the challenges of contemporary society. The City Museum of Ljubljana is also a charming special event venue. 14

EXPERIENCE LJUBLJANA

IN YOUR OWN WAY

1

Art lovers, visit the National Gallery of Slovenia, showcasing the largest visual arts collection from the late medieval period to the 20th century.

2

2022 marks the 150th birth anniversary of our renowned architect, Jože Plečnik, who was – for his native Ljubljana – comparable to the impact that Gaudí had on Barcelona. The Plečnik House features the master builder's home exactly as it was in his lifetime, and a permanent exhibition showcases his work that went way beyond architecture.

3

Discover the high-quality wines of Slovenia in one of the wine bars: our faves are Šuklje Wine Bar (Breg, along the riverbanks), Dvorni bar (close to Kongresni trg Square) and the Castle Wine Bar (Ljubljana Castle).

4

Take a stroll along the main promenade in the central Tivoli Park, which features a year-round open-air photo gallery with temporary exhibitions.

5

What about some stand-up paddling, or kayaking / canoeing into the centre of Ljubljana? That is easily done, as it's possible to rent them. Recommended!

15

TOURS & EXPERIENCES

18 May 17:15 – 18:30 Short walking city tour In just over one hour, this guided tour will feature the “Ljubljana essentials”, focusing on the Old Town quarter, which is nestled at the foot of Castle Hill and along the Ljubljanica riverbanks. The area is characterised by a number of bridges connecting parts of the city that developed in different times and styles. You will cross a few of them for sure, stop by the Town Hall, admire the baroque Robba Fountain and learn about our national poet France Prešeren, whose statue eyes the relief portrait of his eternal love, Julija. 16

19 May 07:30 – 8:30 Morning jog with Petra Stušek Petra Stušek, Managing Director of Ljubljana Tourism and President of the Board at European Cities Marketing, is passionate about many things in life, including the tourism industry. The number of her outdoor hobbies and pursuits is hard to count, and running has been on the list for a long time. As an avid traveller, she always packs sneakers in her luggage. Do you? Weather allowing, join Petra for a morning jog to the nearby Tivoli Park – the green lungs of Ljubljana stretching into the city centre. You will be highly energised for whatever the day might bring!

19 May 8:00 – 9:00 Explore the picturesque Central Market Ljubljana’s Central Market is more than just a place to shop, as it has traditionally also been a spot for the locals to meet and enjoy themselves. It consists of an open-air section, spreading across two squares, a covered market situated between them, and a series of small food shops along the river, which are referred to as ‘Plečnik’s covered market’, being located in a colonnade designed by Ljubljana’s famous architect Jože Plečnik. A lot of the produce is zerokilometre sourced, often sold directly by the farmers. Many chefs go there in the morning to shop for their restaurants, and you might bump into one... 17

20 May

The programme will pinpoint some of Ljubljana’s best practice and achievements in the field of sustainable development that have resulted in a number of international awards and accolades. Accompanied by a guide, you will get acquainted with several projects and developments in the city centre that have contributed to reaching a number of ambitious goals. We have pledged to become a Zero Waste Capital by 2025

(recycling 75% of all public waste), and we are only 7% away! Ljubljana Regional Waste Management Centre (RCERO Ljubljana) is the biggest environmental project in Slovenia supported by the EU Cohesion Fund and the most modern facility for waste treatment in Europe, processing waste from more than a third of Slovenia. OPERATING

SAFELY & RESPONSIBLY

In a country that has been among the safest in the world for years, the safety of residents and guests is furthermore maintained with high levelled hygiene measures, responsible behaviour of the tourist providers and self-protective behaviour.

5 FACTS THAT PROVE SLOVENIA IS A SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE CHOICE

The I feel Slovenia brand is trustworthy.

The I feel SLovenia brand is still trusted by guests from all around the world. During the uncertainty of the epidemic, Slovenia has managed to keep the trust by establishing a platform which com- bines sustainable principles, responsible travel standards, and the hygiene protocols of the National Institute of Public Health, which are based on the recommendations of the World Health Organisa- tion. The system that promotes the unified responsible operation of tourist destinations and operators carries the Green&Safe label.

Among the first destinations to obtain the Safe Travels stamp.

2

Thanks to suitable measures and a quick response to the new conditions, Slovenia was among the first countries in 2020 to receive the global Safe Travels stamp. This accolade is conferred by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

One of the safest countries in the world.

According to international criteria, this green country is a safe tourist destination. According to the GPI (Global Peace Index), Slovenia has been among the safest countries in the world for many years. In 2019, it was among the top ten countries in the world and the fifth safest country in Europe.

4

Guest safety is a priority.

5

The fulfilment of the required criteria is verified.

Many tourist operators meet the criteria set by stringent international certification systems. The holders of the Slovenia Green label meet the Green Destinations Standard prescribed by the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council). Slovenia is a member of the Hotelstars association and its hotel accommodation, categorised with stars, meet European standards. After a revision at the beginning of 2020, these are now even stricter.

The measures for preventing the spread of COVID-19 regulated by the National Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia are in force throughout the entire country. Additional measures for the safety of guests, employees, and locals are in force in tourism and the hospitality industry. Many service providers and destinations have taken additional measures that exceed the required recommendations. Guests can rely on access to suitable information regarding all measures and recommendations anywhere they go. Destinations and operators have been actively including them in their efforts towards responsible actions.

FOUNDED ON

SUSTAINABILITY When it comes to sustainable tourism, the green, active, and healthy Slovenia is the best choice. Tourism in Slovenia is developed with a special sense for nature and green experiences. Our aim is to preserve the incredible diversity of this precious corner of the world for the generations to come!

22

Guests who are aware of the negative impacts that tourism can have on the environment choose their holiday destinations responsibly. In Slovenia, one of the greenest countries in the world, sustainability is in the forefront in tourism. Practices are tested and certified. All the efforts for the sustainable development of tourism in Slovenia are combined under the umbrella of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, which will be included in the handbook of the European Travel Commission (ETC) as a best practice example for the implementation of green schemes by national tourist boards around Europe. The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism is a certification system that has been educating, encouraging, and awarding sustainable approaches in tourism since 2014. Its effectiveness has caught the attention of experts in tourism around the world. This is proven by numerous international awards and accolades. The Slovenia Green label is only awarded to the destinations, operators, agencies, and landmarks that meet no fewer than 100 criteria and indicators related to sustainable operations. More than 100 destinations, operators, agencies, parks, and landmarks operate in Slovenia in accordance with the principles and criteria of the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism for certification. Their sustainable operations are certified with the Slovenia Green label. At the 2020 Sustainable Top 100 Destination Awards, Slovenia won the Best of Europe 2020 award for its sustainable models in tourism. In 2021, the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism was complemented by a system for conferring the Slovenia Green Cuisine label. This label certifies that sustainable principles are observed in gastronomy. It is used for those that preserve the authentic gastronomic specialities of Slovenia, short supply chains, reduce waste, consume energy responsibly, and in other ways follow sustainable principles. m www.slovenia.info//greenscheme
