TRAVELLING IN STYLE

In a world where travel accessories often prioritise function over form, Aviteur distinguishes itself with luxurious luggage pieces that are both practical and exquisitely designed.

Aviteur, founded by Patricia Gucci, granddaughter of Guccio Gucci, epitomises the fusion of traditional Italian craftsmanship with modern aesthetics. Established to address the lack of high-quality carry-on luggage, Aviteur offers products that stand out for their elegance and innovation.

Patricia’s vision for Aviteur was born from a desire to transcend the mundane offerings in the luxury travel accessory market. Observing a sea of generic products in airports, she aspired to create pieces that not only served a functional purpose but also made a stylish statement. This ambition led to the creation of Aviteur’s flagship product, the Carry-On.

The Aviteur Carry-On draws inspiration from the rattan luggage of the 1960s, evoking a sense of nostalgia while incorporating contemporary elements. Crafted

from the finest calfskin leather, it features a translucent, buttonless handle milled from a solid block of Lucite — a design so unique it was granted a design patent by the World Intellectual Property Organisation. The wheel casters, forged from aviation-grade aluminium, ensure maximum stability and longevity, while the pioneering “silent wheels” contain a sound-absorbing air chamber for minimal noise during transit. Inside, the spacious Carry-On is lined with plush Alcantara and houses two compartments for valuables, providing a flat surface for wrinkle-free packing. Every limited-edition CarryOn is engraved with a unique identifying number and comes with an optional protective neoprene cover for airline check-in.

In addition to the Carry-On, Aviteur has created the Cristallo Weekender Maxi, a chic bag ideal for short trips and city use: it’s spacious enough for a few days’ worth »

« of clothing yet compact enough to stow in overhead compartments. Made from premium calfskin leather and lined with Alcantara, it features external and internal pockets, an adjustable shoulder strap, and anodised brass hardware. The Aviteur prism clasp adds a distinctive touch, highlighting the brand’s attention to detail.

Other travel accessories in the product line include the Cristallo Office Bag, a soft briefcase with a laptop compartment, interior and exterior pockets, and a shoulder strap — perfectly complementing the Aviteur Carry-On. The Necessaire, a calfskin toiletry bag lined with washable microfiber, and canvas Garment Bag with leather trim and adjustable shoulder straps are other travel must-haves. To add a personal touch, Aviteur offers customisation options, allowing clients to monogram their products or select exclusive colours and materials by special order. This bespoke service ensures each piece reflects the owner’s unique style and preferences.

Each Aviteur product is meticulously stitched and assembled by master artisans in Italy by hand, reflecting the brand’s dedication to time-honoured craftsmanship. The production process emphasises local sourcing of materials and fosters long-term relationships with artisans, creating a sense of family within the manufacturing community. This approach ensures that every piece meets uncompromising quality standards, is designed to be enjoyed for a lifetime and is handed down from generation to generation.

The fusion of traditional materials with modern components is at the core of Aviteur’s ethos. Hides are naturally tanned, and hardware components are developed by aerospace and automotive engineers using highly durable, lightweight materials commonly used in the aviation sector. This innovative approach ensures that each product is not only aesthetically pleasing but also built to withstand the rigours of travel.

Since its inception, Aviteur has garnered attention from luxury retailers and discerning customers worldwide, and the brand’s commitment to quality and innovation has been showcased at prestigious events, such as Le Cabinet de Curiosités in Paris. Aviteur’s products are available through select stockists and its online platform, offering free worldwide delivery to cater to a global clientele.

Patricia Gucci’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping Aviteur’s identity. Born in London, she is the daughter of Aldo Gucci, the visionary who transformed Gucci into a global luxury brand. Patricia worked at Gucci America as the Fashion Coordinator and Brand Ambassador in the United States and Asia before becoming the first woman appointed to Gucci’s Board of Directors. Her rich heritage and experience in the luxury sector have profoundly influenced Aviteur’s philosophy and designs. Through its unwavering commitment to quality and personalisation, Aviteur continues to redefine luxury travel accessories, creating timeless pieces that accompany travelers on their journeys, both near and far.

COGNAC & CRYSTAL: THE PERFECT PAIRING

Cognac Hardy’s Four Seasons, a limited-edition range of decanters created in collaboration with the legendary crystal house Lalique, encapsulates nature’s cyclical beauty through the marriage of fine cognac and masterful design.

Striking the perfect balance between traditional values and modern perspectives is no small feat. Yet, Cognac Hardy and Lalique have accomplished it with remarkable finesse, crafting a collection of striking decanters that transcend both time and expectation. The Four Seasons range, born of a shared legacy and vision, stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring beauty of exceptional design. From the intricate stoppers to the meticulously aged eaux-de-vie within, this limitededition series exemplifies the convergence of heritage, innovation and artistry.

ABOVE Crafted in collaboration with crystal masters Lalique, each decanter in Cognac Hardy’s limited-edition Four Seasons collection represents a season, celebrating the timeless cycle of nature.

The partnership between Hardy and Lalique, which began in 2012, was more than a meeting of two houses; it was the birth of a new era in luxury. Both entities, rooted in 19th-century craftsmanship, brought their respective legacies to the table. Silvio Denz, Chairman and CEO of Lalique, aptly described the collaboration as a union of tradition and expertise, where the purity of Lalique’s crystal designs aligns perfectly with the elegance of Hardy’s cognacs. At the heart of the Four Seasons collection lies its one-of-a-kind design, inspired by the iconic Charente stills that have long been emblematic of Cognac craftsmanship. Each decanter is adorned with a stopper reminiscent of

the ornate tiaras worn by Chinese empresses during the Ming Dynasty — a regal flourish that imbues the collection with a sense of timeless grandeur. This design is more than aesthetic; it is symbolic, capturing the essence of Hardy’s time-honoured heritage while honouring Lalique’s crystal mastery.

Each of the Four Seasons decanters — Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter — tells a unique story, not only through its design but also through the spirit it holds. The eaux-de-vie used in these blends, sourced from the Premier Cru vineyards of Grande Champagne, carry a history of meticulous cultivation and preservation. These small batches are among the rarest in Cognac Hardy’s Paradis, including eaux-de-vies from 1918, 1922, 1928, 1933, 1937 and 1939, and have been carefully aged to achieve a depth and complexity that only time can impart.

The Spring decanter, with its almond-green stopper and pastel leather presentation box, evokes the promise of renewal. The Summer iteration recalls the warmth and brilliance of the sunny season with golden-yellow accents, while the Autumn decanter reflects the richness and nostalgia of harvest with deep red hues. Finally, Winter, crowned with an ice-blue tiara, represents the dormant yet vital phase of nature’s cycle. Together, these decanters form a poetic homage to the rhythm of the seasons.

The sensory experience of the Four Seasons collection is as compelling as its visual presentation. Each cognac blend offers a distinctive flavour profile shaped by the exceptional terroir of Grande Champagne. The high limestone and chalk content of the soil, combined with optimal sun exposure, creates the perfect environment

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT With its deep red hue and delicate falling leaf motifs, the Autumn decanter is an ode to the beauty of the harvest season; with its almondgreen accents, the Spring decanter embodies rebirth and renewal; a celebration of warmth and radiance, the Summer decanter gleams with golden reflections, reminiscent of sunny days.

for cultivating grapes destined for premium eaux-de-vie. Hardy’s dedication to preserving its finest casks — some set aside by Armand Hardy himself during the interwar period — ensures that each bottle delivers an unparalleled taste experience.

The Winter blend, for instance, marks the culmination of the collection with its century-old eaux-de-vie, a celebration of time’s passage and the art of patience. Its extended maturation has resulted in a cognac with remarkable depth and character, a fitting finale to this extraordinary cycle.

But the Four Seasons collection is more than a showcase of fine spirits; it is an ode to collaboration and creativity. Each decanter is a tribute to the work of René Lalique, whose early 20th-century creations continue to inspire to this day. The feminine silhouettes of the bottles, presented in bespoke, full-grain leather boxes with luxurious packaging, make them as much a collector’s item as a vessel for exquisite cognac.

In a world where true craftsmanship is increasingly rare, the Hardy x Lalique Four Seasons collection reminds us of the value of tradition and innovation working in harmony. It is a celebration of nature, a chronicle of history and a masterpiece of craftsmanship — demonstrating the extraordinary potential of a partnership between two icons. For collectors and connoisseurs alike, these decanters represent not just a purchase but an invitation to partake in a legacy of beauty, taste and refinement.

ICrafting Elegance

A goldsmith, part artisan and part alchemist, is the lifeblood behind the beautiful jewels that adorn our fingers, necks and ears. With every hammer tap and deft file, brilliance is coaxed from the ordinary. At BOLOU Fine Jewellery, the master of this treasured craft is Jochen Wolfgang Neustädter.

n the world of high jewellery, few names in Scandinavia resonate as profoundly as BOLOU Fine Jewellery. Situated in the heart of Denmark, this brand embodies elegance, sophistication and a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship. At the helm of this artistry and craft is Jochen Wolfgang Neustädter, a master goldsmith whose skill and vision transform precious metals and gemstones into stunning, timeless pieces. With a rich background in traditional goldsmithing techniques and a keen sense of contemporary aesthetics, Jochen is a leading figure in the luxury jewellery landscape and has made exquisite pieces for royalty, collectors, exhibitions, famous people and everyone in between.

A JOURNEY OF PASSION AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

Jochen Wolfgang Neustädter, Austrian by nationality, was born in 1966 in Karlsruhe, Germany, to a cartographer father and a mother who originally trained in accounting but worked as a booker in a photo studio. Growing up in the 1970s, Jochen’s childhood was steeped in a creative and bohemian environment, largely influenced by his father’s artistic circle of acquaintances. This exposure to the world of the arts ignited his fascination with beauty and craftsmanship.

From a young age, Jochen was captivated by the intricate beauty of jewellery and the artistry involved in its creation. This passion led him to begin his apprenticeship with a local goldsmith in Karlsruhe in 1982. »

ABOVE Gioia cocktail ring in 18-karat white and yellow gold with an oval natural pink tourmaline. OPPOSITE After speaking with the client to understand their vision, Jochen sketches his ideas, allowing the design to evolve naturally.

« Simultaneously, he attended the prestigious Goldsmith School in Pforzheim, a city renowned for its jewellery heritage. Graduating in 1986, Jochen laid a strong foundation for his craft.

In addition to his artistic pursuits, Jochen had a profound love for the mountains and skiing, embarking on thrilling adventures that ignited his spirit of exploration and resilience. This connection to the mountains has since inspired his work, infusing his creations with a sense of adventure and a respect for nature’s beauty.

Between 1988 and 1989, Jochen fulfilled his conscription in the German military, serving for 15 months in the army. This experience, though divergent from his goldsmithing path, contributed to his character and work ethic, instilling further discipline and a sense of responsibility that he carries into his craft today.

Before and after completing his military service, Jochen trained and worked as a goldsmith journeyman from 1986 to 1992. This period was crucial in developing his skills and refining his artistry. He returned to the Goldsmith School in Pforzheim for 2 additional years, where he immersed himself in advanced techniques and design principles. In 1994, after years of rigorous training and dedication, he earned the title of “Goldschmiedemeister & Gestalter,” a prestigious designation reflecting his mastery in the art of goldsmithing.

A NEW CHAPTER IN DENMARK

Jochen’s journey took a significant turn in 1994 when he travelled to Denmark for a working visit in Herning. Initially planned for just 3 months, this trip transformed into a lifechanging experience. During his time here, Jochen met his Danish wife, with whom he has shared nearly 30 years of marriage as well as a now 23-year-old daughter, which meant he ended up settling in Denmark permanently.

Relocating to Denmark opened up new avenues for Jochen, allowing him to explore the Scandinavian aesthetic and integrate it into his work. He quickly became a wellrespected figure in the Danish jewellery scene, blending traditional German craftmanship and techniques with the minimalist elegance characteristic of Danish design. Jochen joined founder Bolette Louise Sig Mathiasen at BOLOU Fine Jewellery in 2017, building the new workshop facilities, and together, they have been pivotal in defining the BOLOU Fine Jewellery brand as it stands today.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Jochen Wolfgang Neustädter, master goldsmith at BOLOU Fine Jewellery; bespoke 18-karat white gold ring with 14.7 carats of brilliant cut diamonds; everything is skillfully and lovingly made by hand.

THE ART OF CREATION AT BOLOU

At BOLOU, the creative process begins with a dialogue. Clients are encouraged to share their stories, aspirations and inspirations, allowing Jochen to create bespoke pieces that resonate deeply with their personal journeys. “Listening is as important as crafting,” Jochen explains. “Understanding a client’s vision enables me to translate their emotions into a tangible piece of art.”

Once a concept is established, Jochen meticulously selects materials, ensuring every element is of the highest quality. The goldsmith’s workshop is a sanctuary of creativity, filled with tools that reflect both tradition and innovation. “I often say that my tools are extensions of my hands. They allow me to shape not just materials but also ideas,” he notes.

The design process involves a blend of artistry and precision. Jochen sketches initial concepts, spending hours refining each line and curve, allowing clients to visualise their custom piece before it is crafted. This careful approach not only enhances the final product but also builds a connection between the client and their jewellery.

THE SIGNATURE STYLE OF BOLOU

BOLOU’s collections are defined by their elegant simplicity and timeless appeal. Each piece is meticulously crafted, showcasing intricate designs that are contemporary and classic. Jochen’s signature style is characterised by a mix of sharp, stringent and flowing lines, with a focus on movement, bringing a sense of life to each creation.

A standout example is the Toi-et-moi-ring with, among others, a pair of 6-carat diamonds — a striking piece that exemplifies Jochen’s philosophy of storytelling through

jewellery. The ring features intertwining 18-karat white gold bands that cradle a total of 106 diamonds, small and large, representing the interconnectedness of life and love. “When I design, I think about how the piece will be worn, how it will catch the light, and how it will be perceived by others,” Jochen explains. This thoughtful approach ensures that every BOLOU piece is not just an accessory but a meaningful statement.

EMBRACING SUSTAINABILITY

In today’s jewellery industry, sustainability has become a paramount concern. Jochen is acutely aware of this responsibility, and BOLOU is committed to ethical practices throughout its jewellery-making process. “Sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s a necessity,” he asserts. “At BOLOU, we source our materials responsibly, ensuring they come from suppliers who share our values.”

BOLOU and Jochen’s dedication to sustainability, among others, extends to the choice of machines, use of recycled metals and ethically sourced gemstones. This commitment reduces the environmental impact of jewellery production and ensures that every piece carries a sense of integrity. “When clients wear our jewellery, I want them to feel not just beautiful but also proud of their choice,” he says.

A PERSONAL TOUCH

Each piece created at BOLOU’s workshop is infused with Jochen’s personal touch. His passion for craftsmanship is evident in the intricate details that define his work. Every element is a testament to his skill and dedication, from hand-forged shapes, with galleries and engraved patterns, to ajour and custom settings. “Jewellery should be a reflection of the wearer’s personality,” Jochen explains. “I aim to create pieces that feel like a natural extension of who they are.”

Jochen’s dedication to personal connection is further exemplified through his bespoke commissions. He enjoys collaborating closely with clients, guiding them through the design process while incorporating their ideas and preferences. This collaborative spirit fosters a sense of trust and intimacy, allowing clients to feel truly involved in the creation of their jewellery. “I want clients to feel a deep connection to the piece. Jewellery is personal; it should evoke emotions and memories. When someone wears a BOLOU piece, I hope they feel confident, cherished, and beautiful,” concludes Jochen. ABOVE Special order

GOURMET INDULGENCE WITH A TWIST

By marrying festive flavours with wellness-focused ingredients, Club Thirty-Nine Monte Carlo’s carefully crafted Christmas menu invites members to enjoy the best of the holiday season without the guilt.

The holiday season brings with it a host of temptations — rich dishes, decadent sweets, and indulgent drinks — all of which make it a challenge to keep our health goals in check.

This year, however, Thirty-Nine Monte Carlo’s Chef, David Knapp, has crafted a unique menu designed to satisfy members’ holiday cravings without the guilt, featuring innovative and flavorful ingredients that deliver on taste without compromising well-being.

For this season, Chef David Knapp has transformed classic holiday flavours into sophisticated, healthconscious delicacies. The star dish on the menu is a green tea gelée foie gras paired with acidic blueberries, açai and a hibiscus crumble. This perfectly balanced delight combines the luxurious richness of foie gras with the bright, refreshing flavours of green tea gelée, tart blueberries and the nutrient-packed açai berry, topped with a delicate hibiscus crumble.

This indulgent yet wholesome creation is designed to please both the palate and the body. Green tea is celebrated for its antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation and enhance cellular health. Combined with açai and hibiscus, which are also rich in antioxidants and immune-boosting compounds, this dish supports the body’s defences while adding an exciting twist to traditional holiday fare.

In keeping with the spirit of health and wellness, Chef David Knapp has also crafted a festive protein boost, which can be sipped between meals or served as a nutritious dessert. This holiday shake combines the comforting flavours of gingerbread cookies and cinnamon with floral notes of hibiscus and blueberries. Made creamy with a light whipped vegetable cream topping, it’s an ideal seasonal treat for those looking to enjoy the taste of the holidays without added sugar or dairy. The shake’s high protein content makes it filling and nourishing, while cinnamon adds a dash of warmth and holiday spirit, boosting the metabolism and helping to regulate blood sugar.

The Club’s Healthy Christmas Delights menu offers members a delicious way to celebrate the season without compromising their health and fitness goals. Each dish is crafted to satisfy holiday cravings with ingredients that are carefully selected for both their flavour and nutritional benefits.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS LINE OF WORK, AND WHY ARE YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT IT?

I grew up in a very academic family and, at age 9 or 10, would volunteer to help throw dinner parties for my parents and their guests. This blossomed into a career. I love the drive for perfection in hospitality and the relationships I try to build with our Hosts (employees) at The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort. After all, our Hosts are the magic behind our service, and if they feel engaged and appreciated, our guests will feel the same.

WHAT DO YOU STRIVE TO BRING TO THE ST. REGIS BAL HARBOUR RESORT AS GENERAL MANAGER?

As General Manager, my goal is to solidify our position as the premier luxury resort in Miami. We focus on creating memorable experiences that exceed our guests’ expectations by providing the highest level of personalised service that St. Regis is known for. After working in the hospitality industry for over 20 years, I strive to pass along the lessons I have learned throughout my career and to foster a community of individuals who share a genuine passion for hospitality.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU’VE LEARNED IN YOUR CAREER THAT ARE NOW KEY TO YOUR MANAGEMENT METHOD?

Guest service is paramount, and this is where all good hospitality begins. At The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, we aim to exceed guest expectations by anticipating their needs and going the extra mile to create unforgettable memories. A prime example is our legendary St. Regis Butler service, available 24 hours a day. Additionally, I’ve found that leading by example and embracing change is essential in fostering a dynamic and successful team.

WHAT DO YOU THINK GUESTS LOOK FOR IN THEIR STAY, AND HOW DOES THE HOTEL DELIVER THIS?

Today, guests seek more than just luxury; they crave unique and private experiences that leave a lasting impression. We cater to this desire by offering a variety of exclusive experiences, such as intimate champagne sabering masterclasses and rotating seasonal afternoon tea offerings, as well as genuinely unforgettable accommodations. We have one of the largest suites in Miami with our 10-bedroom Grand Palace Suite — the perfect mix of privacy, luxury and design, imagined with large groups and multigenerational families in mind.

We are fortunate to have many returning guests who choose The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort for our luxurious accommodations, unbeatable location and personalised service. Our dedicated staff goes above and beyond to ensure every guest feels truly special, fostering lasting relationships and encouraging repeat visits. We also continuously offer new and exciting programming for guests, so there is always something new to try out on

their return trip. We recently debuted a new Sunset Hour, our spin on Miami’s most exclusive happy hour. It is a time for guests to enjoy our incredible St. Regis Bar on a regular basis while also getting a chance to mingle with other guests and locals.

HOW DO YOU KEEP THE RESORT’S HIGH-QUALITY STANDARDS CONSISTENT?

Maintaining our high standards involves a multifaceted approach. We emphasise continuous training for our staff, stressing attention to detail and personalised service. Fostering a supportive work environment ensures our team remains committed to delivering exceptional experiences. Regular guest feedback is also invaluable in refining our service.

ABOVE The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort spans nine acres of stunning oceanfront property in Miami Beach.

BELOW The resort’s Tranquility Pool Bar is a crowd-favourite, offering the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while overlooking the Atlantic.

THE RESORT IS PART OF THE RENOWNED ST. REGIS GROUP — WHAT VALUES DOES THIS INSTIL IN THE PROPERTY?

I joined The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort as General Manager in the fall of 2023, bringing extensive experience from luxury hotels across Marriott International’s portfolio. However, this marked my first time taking the helm of a St. Regis property. I had long admired St. Regis’s singular legacy, commitment to upholding timeless rituals and traditions, and the unparalleled service that has come to define St. Regis. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is an incredible representation of the brand’s resort portfolio.

WHAT IS IT YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

I just returned from two weeks in Europe, and I missed the energy, the staff, and the general thrill of running such an iconic hotel. I am probably one of the most competitive people you will ever meet, so I always enjoy improving guest satisfaction, ensuring our guests are thoroughly engaged throughout their stay.

Envisioned by the renowned Foster + Partners, the majestic frame features interconnected structures and a central podium — The Lana Promenade — complete with various upscale retail and dining venues, all crowned by an infinity rooftop pool offering sweeping views of the glittering cityscape and desert beyond.

A HUSHED HAVEN

From the architectural ingenuity of its villas to the meticulous attention to detail in service and dining, Cheval Blanc Randheli redefines the concept of an exclusive island getaway in the Maldives.

Located amidst the turquoise tranquillity of the Noonu Atoll in northern Maldives, a picturesque 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé, Cheval Blanc Randheli emerges as a paragon of luxury island hospitality. This exclusive LVMHowned enclave promises a blend of secluded splendour and sophisticated charm, making it a sanctuary for those seeking peace and privacy amidst the sprawling beauty of the Indian Ocean.

Carefully crafted by renowned Belgian architect JeanMichel Gathy, the resort’s design harmoniously integrates with the natural elements of the island, where swathes of lush greenery coalesce with the softest white sand and crystal-clear waters. The resort’s use of muted colour schemes — ivory, taupe and bursts of vivid yellow — reflects

the sand, sun and sea of the surrounding environment. The resort is home to just 46 island, water and garden villas, each designed to provide maximum comfort and privacy with expansive living areas and plentiful outdoor space. Locally sourced teak, rattan, bamboo, coconut shell and thatch adorn the interiors, spotlighting sustainable luxury and giving each space a tactile quality that invites touch. Lofty, cathedral-style ceilings and handcrafted, 7-metre-high doors add to the airy, open feel of the villas, while oversized windows and sliding glass doors offer unimpeded views of the ocean or gardens. Each villa boasts large bedrooms and double dressing rooms, sumptuous bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, and private 12.5-metre infinity pools, offering a refreshing escape from the tropical heat.

As if the villas weren’t already perfect enough, the resort heightens the guest experience even further with its dedicated, personalised service, beginning with the Majordome — a butler who anticipates and attends to the needs of each guest with discretion and precision. From unpacking luggage to preparing snorkelling gear and organising customised excursions, these butlers strive to enhance each aspect of the guests’ stay from dawn to dusk.

Dining at Cheval Blanc Randheli is just as carefully thought out, with options ranging from haute French cuisine at Le 1947, which offers a refined 12-course tasting menu, to the relaxed atmosphere of The White, where guests can savour local flavours against a backdrop of ocean views. Asian eatery Diptyque invites guests to partake in an interactive culinary experience with its livecooking format, while Deelani specialises in Mediterranean dishes served alfresco. Those looking for a unique and exciting meal should opt for the Carte Blanche service, which allows guests to dine anywhere, anytime, whether it’s a breakfast on the beach or a starlit dinner on a private sandbank.

Just like gastronomy, wellness is a cornerstone of the Cheval Blanc experience. At the Maldives Maison, this takes the form of an entire island dedicated to well-being and relaxation. Just a short ferry trip away onboard a traditional Dhoni boat, the spa comprises 6 treatment villas designed to take guests on a sensorial journey tailored to their needs. Whether the mood calls for relief or invigoration, the skilled therapists are on-hand to guide guests through a wide range of Guerlain treatments, including 2 created especially for Cheval Blanc Randheli — the Sun Ritual and the After Diving Experience. The spa’s holistic approach is complemented by a range of mindful activities, including yoga and meditation, that are tailored to boost guests’ physical and mental health. »

« Adventure lovers will also find plenty to satisfy their thirst for excitement. The resort’s water sports centre is equipped with everything from paddleboards to fishing rods and high-adrenaline jet skis, and a professional dive centre offers courses for all levels, including unique experiences like diving with manta rays. Sunset cruises with dolphin sightings, kayaking and sea bobbing allow guests to lap up the beauty of the surroundings from the water.

Meanwhile, on land, active guests can relish the challenge of tennis on courts built to professional standards or enjoy a workout framed by dreamy lagoon views at the fitness centre. Cheval Blanc Randheli also boasts the only surf simulator in the Maldives, allowing first-time learners and advanced riders alike to test their skills.

Another delightful asset is Le Carousel, a 500-squaremetre children’s fantasy land designed to spark imaginations and challenge the senses. With both an indoor playroom and a shaded outdoor area complete with a shallow pool, a trampoline, a large net tree, a slide, a climbing wall, and an interactive screen allowing children to create their own virtual fish, Le Carousel is bursting with activities that will entertain the little ones for hours.

The Maldivian Maison stands out not just for its stunning location and superior amenities but for its commitment to creating a bespoke, unforgettable experience for each guest, young or old — and the resort’s Alchemists are the masterminds behind these joy-inducing encounters. From swimming with turtles to saying vows with your toes in the sand, the possibilities are endless at Cheval Blanc Randheli. Here, the brand’s characteristic French savoire-fair is palpable in every detail — it’s an invitation to experience the French art of hospitality, or art de recevoir, at its most genuine and refined.

AN EDEN-LIKE EXPERIENCE

In Marco Campanella, the world has been gifted a culinary prodigy —a chef who not only pushes boundaries but does so with a humility and passion that extends well beyond the kitchen. At 2-Michelin-starred La Brezza, every meal reflects his belief that food is more than sustenance — it’s an art form, a memory, and, most importantly, a shared joy.

MARCO CAMPANELLA

At just 32 years old, Marco Campanella — a German native with Italian roots — has already etched his name into the upper echelons of haute cuisine. As the Head Chef of award-winning La Brezza at the 5-star Hotel Eden Roc in Ascona and its sister restaurant at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa, his remarkable trajectory is a testament to his innate talent for gastronomy, deeply rooted in family traditions and refined by experiences with some of Switzerland’s most revered chefs..

Marco’s life has always been intertwined with the culinary arts: he was born in Immenstaad am Bodensee, where his family owned and operated an Italian restaurant for over three decades. For Marco, this wasn’t just a place of business; it was a source of inspiration. “As a child, I was fascinated by my parents’ passion,” recalls Marco. “After school, I went straight to the restaurant to help out. I watched my father prepare tomato sauce or knead pizza dough and helped my mother behind the counter. These experiences sparked my love for cooking and continue to influence me to this day. My older brother, who is 9 years older than me, was also a major inspiration. He not only helped in the family business but later moved to Switzerland and worked in some of the best establishments. His career showed me what is possible with hard work and passion.”

Following in his family’s footsteps was a natural decision for Marco. The current Head Chef of La Brezza since 2019, he’s come full circle, as his professional journey first began at La Brezza in 2012, working alongside his brother, Tommaso. At this iconic hotel on Lake Maggiore, he took up his debut

position post-training under the tutelage of Executive Chef Rolf Krapf, a role that would lay the foundation for his later successes. After 2 years, Marco moved to Switzerland to sharpen his skills with Martin Dalsass in St. Moritz. He then continued to hone his culinary voice, gaining experience with some of the industry’s most respected names, including a year spent as chef de partie with Andreas Caminada at 3-Michelin-starred Schloss Schauenstein. Rolf Fliegauf, Europe’s youngest Michelin-star recipient in 2011, also mentored Marco, each kitchen imparting lessons that would define the budding chef’s culinary identity. With Caminada, for instance, he learned the power of precision and subtlety in cooking, culminating in a stint as sous chef at IGNIV.

“My time with Andreas Caminada was particularly formative, as I worked with him for a total of 2 years,” shares Marco. “Each station shaped my cooking style. I got to know a variety of approaches: classical cuisine, modern interpretations, fine products and regional ingredients. This diversity broadened my horizons and shaped my personal signature as a chef.”

While his roots are firmly planted in Europe, Marco’s culinary repertoire is anything but confined. Travels with his wife to Asia, South America, and beyond have left an indelible mark on his cuisine, imbuing it with an international flair and distinctive character. “The flavours, techniques and ingredients of various cultures are reflected in my dishes,” explains the chef. “I would describe my cuisine as cosmopolitan yet down-to-earth. It thrives on creative combinations, such as the interplay of spice, acidity and »

« umami, without losing simplicity. Nevertheless, I place great value on letting the products take centre stage: A tomato remains a tomato, and I want our guests to recognise the ingredients on their plates. The goal is to offer guests an experience that delights their senses — a taste experience that stays with them.”

Each dish that Marco creates tells a story — offering a window into the memories, influences and aspirations that guide his cooking. “I want our guests to feel at home with us, to experience the joy of food and the stories behind the dishes. Each plate tells of my journeys, the people who inspired me, and the beauty of the products that surround us. One dish that particularly reminds me of my trip to Japan is the short rib with mushrooms and BBQ flavours. The meat is cooked for 48 hours and then grilled — resulting in a combination of a juicy texture and intense smoky aromas. Such dishes are meant to transport our guests to another world and bring them joy,” he says.

Marco has made it his mission to ensure that boredom never finds its way onto his plate — and achieves this by remaining ever curious and thinking outside the box. At the same time, there’s an authenticity to his cooking that resonates with diners, an unspoken dialogue between the plate and the palate. This connection, he believes, is at the heart of great cuisine — and he couldn’t be more right.

Under Marco’s leadership, La Brezza has transformed into a culinary destination par excellence. Accolades have poured in, from being named Discovery of the Year in Ticino by GaultMillau in 2019 to winning Hotel Chef of the Year from Bilanz Hotelranking in 2020. La Brezza has »

« also been bestowed with the prestigious 2-Michelin-star ranking since 2022 (the first star came in 2021). Most recently, Campanella was named Chef of the Year and awarded an impressive 19 points for his La Brezza restaurant in Ascona in the GaultMillau guide 2025. Yet, even with all this acclaim it is the guest experience that Marco treasures most. “Ultimately, the most important thing for me is that our guests are happy. When they return and bring new guests along, it is the greatest compliment. Our awards are a great motivation, but nothing is more valuable than satisfied guests who leave our restaurant with a smile,” he admits.

Whether crafting a summer tasting menu bursting with vibrant vegetables or curating a seven-course vegan extravaganza that has earned La Brezza the title of Switzerland’s best vegan restaurant from GaultMillau , Marco approaches each dish as a painter approaches a canvas. “I see cooking as akin to the work of an artist: you start with an idea, let yourself be carried away, and create something unique. It is important to me that the dishes not only look appealing but also taste convincing and form a harmonious menu. The tension in the menu’s structure is crucial — from fresh, light flavours to intense, bold tastes.”

Every element on Marco’s plate contributes to a cohesive narrative — and at the core of this are the products, most of which are sourced locally from the lush region surrounding Lake Maggiore. “The quality of the ingredients is particularly important to me. I have known my suppliers for years, and they know exactly what I value: freshness, flavour and the highest quality,” Marco notes.

Teamwork is equally integral to creating a stellar dining experience, and this is why Marco regards his brigade as the cornerstone of the restaurant’s success. “Together, we are strong —’one band, one sound,” he likes to say, emphasising the collective effort behind every dish. In his kitchen, ideas are exchanged freely, and collaboration is the key to sparking creativity, driving innovation and fostering a sense of camaraderie among his team.

Dish creation, however, does not come without its challenges. For Campanella, the pursuit of perfection is both a motivator and a test of resilience. There are moments of doubt, experiments that fail, and ideas that take time to mature. Yet, it is this very process that enthuses him. “The exchange of ideas is essential. Some dishes only become what they are meant to be through discussions with the team. Of course, not everything always turns out as envisioned, but that is what makes the creative process so exciting.”

Marco’s dedication extends beyond the confines of the kitchen. He views the dining experience as holistic, where ambience, service and storytelling converge to deliver an extraordinary experience. At La Brezza, this philosophy is evident in every detail, from the careful selection of wines to complement the menu to the thoughtful presentation that engages all the senses. For Marco, even the smallest details carry weight, and there is always room for improvement. As he looks to the future, a complete renovation of La Brezza is a dream he harbours, one that would elevate the dining experience to new heights. But for now, his focus remains on the present — on delivering moments of delight to each guest who steps through his doors.

MATRIARCH OF MODERN DINING

In a career marked by incredible milestones, Hélène Darroze’s greatest achievement may well be her ability to connect — to her ingredients, her heritage and her diners — through the universal language of food.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATIAS INDJIC, JUSTIN DE SOUSA & JÉRÔME GALLAND

With 2024 marking the 16th anniversary of her 3-Michelin-starred restaurant at The Connaught in London and 25 years since opening her Paris flagship, Hélène Darroze remains an indomitable force in the culinary world. Yet, it is the quiet, heartfelt way she brings her personal story to the plate that has made her truly stand out in the industry.

Her early years in the pastoral landscapes of Landes, an area in southwestern France steeped in Basque-Landaise traditions, are inseparable from her culinary philosophy. Born into a family of chefs in Mont-de-Marsan and raised amidst the rustic beauty of cornfields and poultry farms, the kitchen was both her birthright and her playground. However, her earliest memories of cooking are not from the family’s professional kitchens but from home, where her mother and grandmother prepared food with love.

While her childhood was infused by the sights and smells of cooking, it was also a time of reflection and identity-building. Her region’s wild Atlantic coast, pine forests and abundant agriculture painted a backdrop of rich sensory experiences that would become the anchor of her creativity. The hustle of daily life at her family’s restaurant, where farmers and fishermen brought fresh, local produce, instilled in her a reverence for ingredients that continues to shape her menus today.

Despite her lineage, however, Darroze initially pursued a different path. Encouraged by societal expectations of

the 1980s, she studied business at L’École Supérieure de Commerce in Bordeaux. Her entry into the culinary world began not behind the stoves but in the administrative offices of Alain Ducasse’s 3-Michelin-starred Le Louis XV in Monaco. But this didn’t last long — her burning passion for cooking could simply not be contained. She found her way into the kitchen, and it was in those early days, jumping at opportunities to work alongside Ducasse’s chefs, that she found her calling, learning on the job and pouring her heart and soul into her food. Despite a late start by industry standards, her intuition and heartfelt approach compensated for any gaps in formal training. Her dishes began to tell stories, reflecting her life’s experiences, upbringing and passions.

When Darroze returned to Landes in 1995 to helm her family’s restaurant, she brought with her not only the technical skills she had honed but also a vision for expressing herself through food. Her culinary style began to crystallise, and her cooking evolved as a bridge between tradition and innovation, paying homage to her roots while daring to explore new culinary frontiers. This duality became her hallmark and set the stage for her eventual move to the hub of haute cuisine: Paris.

1999 marked a turning point in Hélène’s career: the launch of her first restaurant at Rue d’Assas. Here, she stepped fully into her identity as a chef and entrepreneur, crafting menus that reflected both her Basque heritage and the cosmopolitan influences of the French capital. »

“My cooking is speaking about my life, my emotion in life, something that comes from within me. There is a lot of emotion and a lot of myself in every dish.”

« The restaurant earned widespread acclaim and 2 Michelin stars, solidifying her reputation as a force in French gastronomy.

By 2008, Darroze set her sights on the United Kingdom in hopes of introducing her distinctive culinary voice to a new audience. The Connaught, one of London’s most prestigious hotels, provided the perfect platform for Darroze to adapt her ethos to British tastes while staying true to her French origins. The city embraced her approach, and the restaurant quickly became a cornerstone of fine dining in London, earning a Michelin star within 6 months and a second star by 2011. In the years that followed, she expanded her culinary empire, blending her signature style with the unique characteristics of each location. Her refurbishment of The Connaught in 2019 brought a modern elegance to the historic venue, with a redesigned dining

room and innovative, seasonally changing menus prepared with the finest British and French produce.

Her Paris flagship, Marsan, named after her birthplace, is perhaps her most personal project to date. The restaurant, which relaunched in 2019 after a complete overhaul, is a love letter to her homeland. From its oak-panelled interiors to the display of family heirlooms and photographs of her childhood, it encapsulates her philosophy of creating spaces that resonate with authenticity and emotion. Even the menu is inspired by the landscapes of Landes, with its golden cornfields, lush woodlands and famed duck and Armagnac production. It is here that her Basque-Landaise identity finds its fullest expression, a testament to her journey back to her roots, expertly combined with the techniques she has mastered over decades and hints of her travels from Asia to America and everywhere in between. »

« Her most recent ventures, including collaborations with Villa La Coste in Provence and the Royal Mansour in Marrakech, demonstrate her versatility and vision. At Michelin-starred Villa La Coste, her menus celebrate the region’s abundant produce, showcasing the flavours of Provence with sophistication and simplicity. Meanwhile, at the Royal Mansour, she has reinterpreted Moroccan culinary traditions with a refined touch, honouring the country’s rich heritage while introducing her trademark finesse.

Whether at The Connaught, Marsan, Jòia or her ventures in Provence and Marrakech, each dish Darozze creates is an invitation to explore her world, drawing from a lifetime of experiences and inspirations. “My cooking is speaking about my life, my emotion in life, something that comes from within me. There is a lot of emotion and a lot of myself in every dish,” she explains. Above all, however, the most important pillar of her food philosophy is the selection of the best products—nothing novel for chefs of her calibre, but for Darozze, it’s personal. She was born in the French countryside, so integrating local and seasonal ingredients is non-negotiable, as is showing respect for the artisans and producers who supply her kitchens. Another rule in her cooking is to never forget to give happiness to her guests. “I’m not cooking to demonstrate something; I don’t want people to try and understand something when they eat. I just want them to have pleasure and happiness — to have tasty food, that’s what I want.

It’s a pleasure to make them happy.”

As a mother of two, the inspirational chef balances her demanding career with her personal life. Her daughters, Charlotte and Quiterie, are central to her world, and her adoption journey has profoundly influenced her perspective on life and cooking. She is also a philanthropist, co-founding La Bonne Étoile, a charity supporting disadvantaged children, particularly in Vietnam — where she adopted her first daughter. A natural leader, Darozze pays attention to nurturing talent within her teams, with many of her protegés having gone on to spearhead their own kitchens. A true cultural ambassador, Hélène’s influence is widespread: she has been a judge on France’s Top Chef, authored cookbooks, and even inspired the character Colette in Pixar’s Ratatouille

Darroze is leading a life and career as complex and varied as one can only imagine, and her contributions to gastronomy have earned her numerous accolades, including 6 Michelin stars, the title of World’s Best Female Chef in 2015 from Veuve Clicquot and knighthood in the French Legion of Honour in 2021. Even through all this triumph, she’s not one to rest on her laurels, forever remaining grounded in her philosophy: to cook is to live, and to live is to cook. Whether in London, Paris or Marrakech, Darroze’s cuisine remains a dialogue between past and present, a celebration of life’s journeys rendered on the plate and a reflection of her belief in the power of food as the glue that connects people and brings them joy.

BEYOND THE TABLE

Table’s meteoric rise to international acclaim has not diluted its identity. On the contrary, Chef Patron Bruno Verjus’s refusal to conform to the expectations of haute cuisine has only deepened the fascination with this Parisian sensation.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STÉPHANE RISS

Aptly nestled near the bustling Marche d’Aligre food market in Paris’s eccentric 12th arrondissement, far removed from the gilded façades of the city’s more traditional fine-dining enclaves, Table by Bruno Verjus exudes a quiet, magnetic charm. At its helm is Roanne-born Bruno Verjus, an inspiring culinary talent whose journey to becoming a chef is as unique and unexpected as the dishes he serves.

A former medical student turned entrepreneur, journalist, author, blogger, and TV and radio personality, Verjus brought a lifetime of varied experiences to his Parisian counter when he opened Table back in April 2013 at the age of 51. It was a late but fortuitous start for a man whose cooking philosophy had been simmering for decades, spurred on by several years working as a food critic. By 2018, just 5 years after its launch, Table earned its first Michelin star. Four years later, a second star followed, and in 2023, Table vaulted onto the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, debuting at number 10 and winning the Highest New Entry award. Today, it sits proudly in third place, a remarkable feat for a self-taught chef without any formal training — especially in Paris, the culinary capital of the world.

Gastronomes from all over the globe now flock to this off-the-beaten-track eatery, the only one in the city’s eastern outskirts endowed with 2 Michelin stars—and from the moment its sliding doors open, it becomes evident why it’s a firm favourite among food lovers: this is no ordinary restaurant. Set on a quiet residential street, its unassuming entrance gives way to an open kitchen that dominates the

space, with a sleek, wave-like polished metal counter stretching the length of the dining room. Perched on high stools, diners overlook the nonchalant brigade of chefs, who stand just feet away, orchestrating their culinary magic with deft hands and excitement in their eyes. Here, there is no back kitchen, no mise en place in the traditional sense. Everything is prepared à la minute, with Verjus and his team crafting each dish in full view of their audience.

The dining experience at Table begins with the Couleur du Jour (colour of the day), a bright and palate-enticing salad that encapsulates Verjus’s passion for celebrating nature’s bounty in its purest form. A medley of seasonal herbs and vegetables, each component is chosen for its peak freshness and prepared with minimal intervention. This simplicity belies the complexity of flavours and textures, a hallmark of Verjus’s cuisine. From there, another 10 or so courses are served, spanning starters, mains, cheeses and desserts. Highlights include the signature lobster from Île d’Yeu gently poached in clarified butter, and a chocolate and caper tart for dessert, topped with a large dollop of caviar — a masterstroke of contrasts and sweet and salty flavours, all delivered in perfect harmony

Central to Verjus’s culinary ethos is an unwavering respect for ingredients and the artisans who produce them. He refers to himself not as a chef but as a “cuisinier”, a cook whose primary role is to honour the natural beauty of his ingredients. This is his muse, the fire in his belly energising him and keeping his cooking alive. Verjus originally designed Table to reflect the kind of restaurant he’d want to eat at every day — serving simple, good food »

LEFT Giant asparagus topped with caviar and served with an asparagus and pistachio mousseline.

« made using excellent ingredients without all the frills, and this concept still rings true today. Each morning, deliveries arrive from trusted producers, bringing with them the day’s inspiration. Whether it’s live scallops, wild herbs or a perfectly aged turbot, these precious ingredients dictate the menu, which changes not just daily but often between lunch and dinner. Verjus’s approach is refreshingly unpretentious; there are no fancy techniques or hours of pre-preparation: his focus lies solely on respecting the ingredients and the flame that cooks them, making magic within a moment’s notice.

Verjus’s open mind, paired with his deep connection to his ingredients and obsession with cooking only the best of the best, is evident in every bite. He sees himself as a bridge between producers and diners, a “middleman” whose duty it is to elevate the product, magnifying its flavour without overshadowing it. It’s about the art of balance and restraint, which informs his incredible ability to build immense flavour with few ingredients. His sourcing is meticulous, favouring small, dedicated producers who share his commitment to quality. Sardines arrive fresh from Saint-Gilles Croix de Vie in Loire, shellfish hails from Norway, asparagus from Alsace, and pigeon and milk-fed veal from Brittany.

Equally important is cultivating a work environment that prioritises the happiness and well-being of his team — it’s why when you visit, you’ll see smiling, stress-free faces prepping and serving the food. Table is open only 4 days a week, with a single lunch and dinner service accommodating just 24 diners at a time. This structure allows his staff to maintain a healthy work-life balance that »

« keeps their personalities and creativity alive. In an industry often plagued by burnout, Verjus’s model is a testament to his long-term vision and respect — for his team, his craft and his guests. The result is palpable: diners are greeted by a personable team that exudes warmth and a genuine love for their work, embodying the convivial spirit that Verjus has carefully nurtured. Likewise, the chef himself radiates an infectious energy and enthusiasm, clearly enjoying every moment he spends on the pass. Whether guiding the youngest members of his brigade behind the stoves or chatting with diners in multiple languages, he’s the poster child of unfussy hospitality.

Verjus’s exceptional character is not the only thing that sets him apart — his refusal to adhere to traditional notions of fine dining is one of the chef’s most endearing attributes. At Table, there is no room for ego or pretence. Verjus remains remarkably grounded: his intention is to feed the soul, and his humility and humour are as integral to his persona as his culinary prowess. The aim is to create an intimate, memorable experience that resonates on a very personal level where guests are made to feel as though they are dining in Verjus’s home, a sentiment reinforced by his constant presence in the dining room.

Beyond the walls of Table, Verjus’s influence ripples through the culinary world. He is deeply committed to sustainability, advocating for a closer connection between chefs and producers. This is evident in every aspect of his work, from the way he sources his ingredients to the minimal waste produced in his kitchen. “Our commitment to instant cuisine involves a direct relationship with our local

producers. On a daily basis, they supply us with what nature has to offer. We don’t place quantity orders; we only place quality orders. The exemplarity of their work, pesticidefree and respectful of the wild nature of the soil, respects the health of our customers and that of our land,” he notes.

This ethos extends to his interactions with the broader food community, where he is known for his collaborative spirit and willingness to share knowledge. Verjus speaks fondly of mentors like Alain Passard, whose produce-driven philosophy has been a significant influence on his own cooking. Yet, Verjus is equally devoted to forging his own path, one that eschews trends in favour of authenticity.

As Table embarks on its second decade, Verjus shows no signs of slowing down. For him, the act of cooking is a form of improvisation, akin to jazz. Staying in his comfort zone is not part of the picture, and each day brings new possibilities dictated by the light, the mood and the ingredients at hand. This spontaneity, combined with an unwavering dedication to quality, ensures that no 2 meals at Table are ever the same.

In a city renowned for its culinary heritage, Table carves out its very own niche. It’s a place where the boundaries between chef and diner, kitchen and table, dissolve, creating a dining experience that is both profound and profoundly human. At 64, Bruno Verjus continues to thrive, embracing the art of cooking with a vigour that defies convention. He has redefined what it means to be a chef, proving that it is never too late to follow your passion or start a new career, and is a shining example of the boundless possibilities that arise when one dares to dream.

AN HOMAGE TO EXPLORATION

Showcasing the exceptional talent that culinary legends Martín Berasategui and his protégé Paolo Casagrande are celebrated for, but with an adventurous twist, Il Milione offers a cross-continental journey through flavours, cultures and traditions, all rooted in the Mediterranean ethos that defines 3-Michelin-starred Lasarte in Barcelona.

The first restaurant in Gaudi’s hometown to be bestowed with the coveted 3 Michelin stars (as of 2017), Lasarte, a veritable gourmet temple in Barcelona, personifies perfection under the guidance of internationally acclaimed chef Martín Berasategui, who holds no less than 12 Michelin stars across his 14 global restaurants. But even within the confines of greatness, curiosity beckons. This desire to venture further gave rise to Il Milione, a one-of-akind dining experience nestled within Lasarte curated by Berasategui’s right-hand man, Paolo Casagrande, and the Lasarte team. Here, the pursuit of excellence is not an end but a journey, taking diners beyond the conventional boundaries of gastronomy to reveal new realms of taste.

The setting of Il Milione is itself a statement of intent. Located in what was formerly known as the “Chef’s Table”, this exclusive private room on the first floor provides a privileged and unobstructed view of the restaurant’s bustling kitchen, where diners can see the chefs at work, preparing each dish with surgical precision. The intimate, wood-clad space, redesigned by Domingo Estudio and Makeat, specialists in gastronomic innovation, melds a trilogy of specially curated soundtracks, dynamic lighting, and bespoke aromas to create a complete sensory immersion.

Il Milione draws its name from Venetian explorer Marco Polo’s diaries, which tell the tales of his travels beyond the known world in the 13th century, detailing the wonders he uncovered and the territories he navigated. This thematic inspiration aligns perfectly with Paolo Casagrande’s ethos, a Veneto native himself who dares to push the culinary frontiers at Lasarte, weaving a menu that traverses continents and cultures, all inspired by the techniques and ingredients discovered in his own travels.

In collaboration with Martín Berasategui, a titan of Spanish gastronomy who lends his decades of expertise, Casagrande infuses this spirit of exploration into the 13-course menu at Il Milione, which takes over 3 hours to complete. Familiar flavours from Veneto, the Basque Country and the broader Mediterranean region punctuate the dishes, complemented by Asian and Latin American influences. The menu — akin to a culinary odyssey — is not just a geographical voyage but also temporal, combining historical culinary practices with avant-garde techniques and the highest quality ingredients to create dishes with exceptional purity and definition of flavours. The artistic presentation of each course adds the final touch to the distinctive menu, designed exclusively for Il Milione.

« cuisine to the rest of the world,” says Martín. “My culinary philosophy centres around my dedication to sourcing the highest quality of raw ingredients, which is very important to me. We continue to take advantage of the amazing produce we have in Spain, bringing the best fish and seafood from the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas, as well as the best red meats from Galicia. Our main aim is to source the absolute best products for our guests; therefore, we diligently research and find these suppliers.”

The culinary journey at Il Milione begins with Bound by the Seas, a sequence of delicate starters, including an amaranth crisp, false razor clam, pumpkin tart, Topinambur origami and a crispy carabinero lotus flower. Each course

is defined as a chapter, with evocative names such as Pearls of the Sea — a triptych of oysters with ajoblanco and sesame — Origins, featuring a millefeuille of foie gras, smoked eel, spring onion, green apple and cream, and The Marvels — prawns paired with cold white asparagus juice and strawberries.

Dishes like Deep Essence — grilled king fish with its vinaigrette, truffled roots, aniseed crab reduction and Amarena cherry — and Seduction — venison marinated in koji with Espelette pepper, orange compote and translucent blueberry juice — demonstrate the team’s mastery of harmonising bold elements with delicate complexity and refined execution. Another standout is Silk, an indulgent »

Seafood features prominently across the menu, a nod to both Mediterranean and global maritime traditions, while the Fishing Light course, featuring octopus and squid prepared Galatian style, pays homage to Casagrande and Berasategui’s roots.

Xavi Donnay, named the World’s Best Pastry Chef in 2020, manages the pre-dessert, dessert and petit-fours section of the meal. Highlights include Hoshigaki, a medley of persimmon, olive and dates; Nectar, a miso, almond, pear and yuzu masterpiece; and 100% Cocoa, a celebration of chocolate in its purest form. Each course, from the first bite to the last, is a dialogue between the heart and technique, aiming for excellence in every aspect. The result is a “menu of marvels” that surprises and delights, ensuring a unique and memorable dining experience.

“I am very passionate about my cooking, and I want all my guests around the world to feel this enthusiasm for the dishes that we serve them. To me, a successful dish wows the guests and leaves a lasting impression on them. One of our main goals is to ensure that guests always remember the dishes we served them and their time in our city,” adds Martín.

Every dish is plated on custom-made crockery designed to subtly and elegantly enhance its presentation. Handblown glass, polished silverware and natural textiles adorn

the tables, chosen for their ability to complement — not overpower — the food. The result is an environment where every element works in harmony, and every detail — from the sharpness of the cutlery to the texture of the linens — is considered with care. The wines are paired with equal consideration, encompassing everything from local Spanish wines to international rarities and Champagne Krug cuvées.

Beyond the food, the dining experience is elevated by meticulous service from Joan Carles Ibáñez, Lasarte’s maître d, who ensures every moment spent at Il Milione feels effortless. Available from Wednesday to Saturday in two sessions, Il Milione accommodates a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 diners. This exclusivity ensures an intimate experience, allowing every detail to resonate fully with the guests.

In a world often content with the predictable, Il Milione dares to ask: what if there is more? And in its answer, it offers a vision of what gastronomy can be — a symphony of flavours, sensations and stories thatstimulate the mind and the senses, remaining ingrained in one’s memory long after the meal itself. With Il Milione, Lasarte reaffirms its place at the pinnacle of fine dining, where Martín Berasategui, Paolo Casagrande and their team challenge themselves to venture beyond the already extraordinary. In doing so, they invite diners not just to witness but to partake in an unprecedented journey of culinary discovery.

AN EYE FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY

Whether guiding clients to their dream homes or curating a portfolio of the world’s most remarkable properties, Alexander Kraft — Chairman and CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty France – Monaco — embodies the essence of luxury real estate.

For more than two decades, Alexander Kraft has been the driving force behind Sotheby’s International Realty France – Monaco. Renowned for its association with some of the world’s most exquisite properties, the brand, under Kraft’s leadership, has transcended the traditional boundaries of real estate. For Kraft, it’s never been just about selling properties; it’s about crafting and delivering a particular way of life — a philosophy that has remained central to his vision since day one.

“We are not simply selling luxury properties but a lifestyle. Our clients are connoisseurs, and the key to matching an extraordinary property with an ultra-highnet-worth (UHNW) client is understanding his or her lifestyle,” Kraft explains. His words encapsulate the guiding ethos of Sotheby’s International Realty France – Monaco. Over time, this vision has proven increasingly relevant as the demands of the world’s UHNW individuals have evolved. Today’s discerning clients seek properties that combine architectural brilliance, historical significance and contemporary functionality. With an eye for the extraordinary, Kraft has positioned Sotheby’s International Realty France – Monaco as the custodian of these exceptional estates.

THE ART OF REAL ESTATE

Before becoming the European CEO of Sotheby’s’ Real Estate Department and eventually owner of Sotheby’s International Realty France – Monaco, Kraft’s journey into luxury realty began at Sotheby’s auction house, where he quickly developed an appreciation for the parallels between fine art and high-end properties. “This path has »

« shown me that the luxury properties we are handling are as unique as works of art, and that the clients who buy luxury properties are the same as those who are interested in fine art, collectables, jewellery, watches and other luxury items. As I have a passion for all of these things, not forgetting my lifelong interest in architecture and history, dealing with the world’s most extraordinary estates is not just a job but an ongoing love affair,” he enthuses.

This personal connection to his work enables Alexander to identify with his clientele, going over and above to find their ideal properties while offering top-quality service.

“The traditions of Sotheby’s and Sotheby’s International Realty are ingrained in our DNA and are always at the core of everything we do — they set the benchmark for our way of operating,” says Kraft. “However, to become, and stay, the leader in our field, one has to constantly adapt to innovations and trends, so our challenge is to adopt the best new tools available whilst maintaining the highest standards our clients expect of us.” This duality — honouring heritage while embracing modernity — is a cornerstone of Kraft’s strategy.

TRENDS IN LUXURY REAL ESTATE

In a rapidly shifting world, the luxury real estate market cannot rest on it’s laurels; it has to continuously adjust to meet the changing preferences of buyers as they look to make safer investments. Post-pandemic, Kraft has observed a renewed interest in secondary luxury homes driven by affluent clients who previously preferred to rent and travel. These buyers, often dubbed the “Airbnb generation,” have

rediscovered the various advantages of owning secondary luxury homes, which, in turn, has introduced a new wave of in-demand properties. “This generation has brought their very own, elevated expectations to our market: they want turn-key homes that are ready to be lived in and enjoyed, and all this with the amenities of a luxury hotel,” he notes. This trend has persisted, reinforcing the notion that impeccably designed homes, whether beautifully renovated or newly built, will always sell better and quicker than those in need of attention.

“Today’s dream home combines the perfect location with architectural significance and top design,” Kraft adds. From the French Riviera to the Mont Blanc Massif, properties in Sotheby’s International Realty’s portfolio exemplify this ethos. Each listing is meticulously curated, with Kraft personally ensuring that only properties of exceptional quality and taste make the cut. “For every property we list, we refuse several others; the key to our success is making a vigorous selection when it comes to adding properties to our portfolio,” he admits. “For us, it’s not about size or price, but about quality and a certain taste.”

In France, Kraft has identified a return to “blue-chip” locations — destinations with enduring appeal and proven value. As in the art world, truly outstanding properties always find buyers, even in challenging economic and political times. This focus on quality over quantity has become a defining feature of the brand’s portfolio. »

DESIGN AS A DIFFERENTIATOR

Interior design plays an increasingly significant role in elevating the appeal of luxury properties. To ensure that every listing in Sotheby’s International Realty France –Monaco’s portfolio meets the exacting standards of today’s UHNW buyers, Kraft has a longstanding tradition of working with the world’s leading designers and architects. Whether showcasing an already-built masterpiece or connecting clients with trusted design professionals to spruce up their newly acquired homes, Kraft understands the transformative power of design.

Modern buyers demand not only beauty but also practicality, acknowledges Kraft. “Nowadays, buyers expect a higher level of design and comfort in luxury homes than before. Whereas pre-pandemic, there were many buyers who were willing to buy an extraordinary home and restore and design it themselves to their liking, many buyers today are looking for state-of-the-art design and amenities in their home from the get-go,” he says. This shift underscores the importance of attention to detail and understanding client preferences.

MONACO: THE EPITOME OF EXCLUSIVITY

Among the markets that Sotheby’s International Realty France – Monaco serves, the Principality of Monaco stands out as a world unto itself. Kraft, a resident of Monaco for nearly 20 years, describes it as “a micro-market that is completely independent from the rest of the world”. Monaco’s unique blend of luxury, security and accessibility makes it a haven for UHNW individuals and families. Its real estate market reflects this exclusivity, offering properties that are as coveted as they are rare.

Monaco’s appeal lies in its ability to offer the best of all worlds: a stunning Riviera location, year-round sunshine, a tax-friendly environment, and the shopping, restaurant and entertainment options of a big city, all within the context of a small, tightly-knit community. “There simply is no place like Monaco anywhere else,” Kraft gushes. He also highlights his excitement surrounding the upcoming Mareterra development, a project poised to redefine the Principality’s luxury landscape.

AESTHETIC VALUES IN ACTION

Kraft’s personal passion for aesthetics permeates his professional life. An avid collector of vintage watches, classic cars and fine art, alongside owning his own premium fashion brand, he approaches property curation with the same discerning eye. “Personally, I am always on the lookout for extraordinary objects that have a special history, patina or artisanship. The very same applies to luxury properties: I am always looking for properties that have this certain extra, a ‘je ne sais quoi’,” he shares.

From a historic Belle Époque residence in RoquebruneCap-Martin to a sprawling equestrian estate in Normandy, an exclusive mountainside chalet in Chamonix or a palatial private villa in Paris, each property in Sotheby’s International Realty’s portfolio tells its own story. The selection process is rigorous, with Kraft personally overseeing the inclusion of properties that align with the brand’s high standards.

THE FUTURE OF LUXURY REAL ESTATE

Looking ahead, Kraft sees a bright future for luxury real estate, driven by its growing cultural and financial significance. However, he acknowledges that this comes with its own set of challenges. “Luxury properties have seen a never-ending rise in importance over the past decades from a financial and cultural point of view. At the same time, the market has become more competitive, transparent and faster than ever. I don’t have any doubt that these phenomena will only continue over the next decade and that in order to stay a leader in the market, one has to be more professional, better connected, more technically innovative and bespoke service-oriented than ever,” he says. Kraft is particularly excited about upcoming projects, including a high-end development in Paris set to debut next year. These ventures reflect his commitment to pushing boundaries while maintaining the integrity of the Sotheby’s International Realty brand. His vision of combining tradition with innovation has not only shaped the company’s trajectory but also continues to influence the broader real estate landscape.

Nestled in the middle of it all - a former farmhouse from 1648 – now the luxury holiday home ‘Käth und Nanei’, surrounded by a nature paradise with an old forest. New and yet in its original form. Unobtrusive and yet visible. A house for friends, for families, for small weddings and birthdays, a place where one ...can simply be.

The most beautiful place, where the past has been brought back to life.

ARTISTIC INTUITION

From collaborations with icons like Madonna and Marc Jacobs to new projects in Bali, Jonathan Rachman discusses how staying true to himself and honouring his family’s unselfish spirit informs his ‘currently classic’ approach to interior design.

YOU HAVE AN INCREDIBLE LIFE STORY, FROM GROWING UP IN INDONESIA TO STUDYING IN SWITZERLAND AND THEN MOVING TO SAN FRANCISCO. HOW HAS EACH CHAPTER OF YOUR LIFE SHAPED YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC?

I always tell people that each city, country, continent and part of the world does not only shape me but I was literally marinated, macerated, simmered, pickled and aged in them. Indonesia is such a rich, complex and beautiful country with so many natural resources, as well as human talent — its culture, craftsmanship, architecture, patterns and colours are the root of my aesthetic, while Switzerland and Western Europe raised me to appreciate the classic architecture and art which became my solid style foundation. At the same time, San Francisco and America taught me to adapt, adjust, branch out and think outside the box. They say it takes a village to raise a child. I say it takes the world to shape my design aesthetics!

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO INTERIOR DESIGN, GIVEN YOUR BACKGROUND IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT?

I never, ever planned to be an interior designer. After my hospitality management education, I paid my dues in corporate America but was not happy. I did my graduate studies in Fashion Design but was unwilling to be separated from my then-partner (now husband). I decided to open my own humble flower shop. In short, thanks to individuals and companies like Marc Jacobs, Oprah, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Madonna, VH1 and the Four Seasons Hotel, they opened doors for me in floral and event design. The United Nations was also crucial in contributing to my design career. Some attendants of the events I designed became my diehard fans and asked me to “decorate” their homes! It took one client, word of mouth, perseverance and being at the right place at the right time; the rest is history! However, I believe there »

« are many parallels between my hospitality management education and interior design.

WHY DO YOU THINK YOU ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN?

My parents encouraged me to appreciate all kinds of beauty and be my own person — which was so unusual and forward-thinking in their time and culture. I believe I am passionate about design because I am a self-proclaimed romantic and sentimental person. Interior design allows me to reminisce, create and recreate as well as preserve and reinvent not only objects, décors and spaces but myself — not one day, corner, room, or project is ever the same. I cannot be static, and this allows me to constantly evolve, grow, and travel the world, which my parents also encouraged.

When I started to be part of the interior design industry, I honestly had no clear vision, hope or goal. 22 years later, I am convinced that my work is a reflection of not only me as an individual and designer but also of my parent’s legacy. For each project that I am commissioned to do, I always design it for my clients. I want my clients to feel at home. It is not about me but about them. My work elevates and enhances their quality of life, and as such, it is my way of carrying my parents’ legacy: they were always so unselfish and humble, and they continued to spread the love in their own way to everyone they encountered. They were such a great example, and I hope to do the same with my design work.

YOU’RE KNOWN FOR MIXING JAVANESE INFLUENCES WITH WESTERN DESIGN ELEMENTS. HOW DO YOU APPROACH BLENDING THESE DIVERSE STYLES INTO A COHESIVE INTERIOR?

The human race has been known to be nomadic from the beginning of time. This means humans eventually travelled and mingled and mixed their cultures. I was born in a country with over 1000 languages and ethnicities and have travelled around the world from a very young age. Mixing Javanese, or Indonesian, and Western design elements comes to me so naturally — as naturally as I walk and talk. In principle, I stay true to myself and am very comfortable mixing patterns and colours and various periods from different parts of the world. It goes back to the human factors to me: to respect and listen to my clients and fully understand each project’s nature. I don’t overthink it; I simply do it! We’ve all heard the expression, “People eat with their eyes.” In my design process, I always follow my gut feeling, I design with my gut (of course, I need my eyes), but if my gut tells me this feels great, I go for it.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A PARTICULAR PROJECT WHERE YOUR INDONESIAN HERITAGE

PROFOUNDLY IMPACTED THE DESIGN?

I was once asked by de Gournay, the London-based bespoke wallpaper company, to collaborate with them for a show. At the time, the theme was Animalia. I instantly thought about the Balinese monkeys in Ubud and Bali, which is not only one of our favourite spots on Earth but also pivotal in our family’s life — we have a lot of history and a lifelong infatuation with the island. I am a sentimental person, so I represented my parents as these Balinese monkeys holding hands, as that was what I witnessed all my life since I was a little boy. Until the recent end of my father’s life, my parents affectionately held each other’s hands whenever they walked or were together. I created a scene inspired by my parents as the “Loro Blonyo,” which means the “inseparable couple” in Javanese. Symbolically, a pair of sculptures were given to newlyweds. In my rendition of the inseparable couple for de Gournay’s custom bespoke hand-painted wallpaper, I dressed my “monkey parents” in Balinese pattern sarongs. They’re portrayed in their gorgeous habitat in a Balinese »

Unforgettable views of the Eternal City

« landscape filled with traditional temples, beautiful ladies, flora and fauna, as well as the mythical eternal love of Rama and Shinta from the Indonesian Ramayana version. The show received accolades and a warm reception from various media. The wallpaper was used in some fashion shoots in Europe, and in the end, the Cecil-Gurney family gifted it to my husband and me. Part of it is installed in our bedroom in California, while another part will be installed in our restaurant and home in Bali.

YOU’RE DUE TO OPEN A SHOP AND A RESTAURANT IN BALI SOON. CAN YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM THESE NEW VENTURES?

Yet another emotional and sentimental venture. It is called DI SINI DI SANA (HERE and THERE) by Rachman and Sons. I had a clear vision of doing this after my father passed away, leaving my mother brokenhearted. I want to continue the legacy of my parents, the Loro Blonyo, the inseparable couple. Throughout their lives, my parents were so kind, compassionate and generous to everyone they encountered. They put their love for each other, their family, their country, and the island of Bali into action, be it by starting a school, adopting a child, or simply spreading love in their daily lives. My mother (and sister) are amazing cooks, and growing up, we always had guests, literally daily, be it one person or 300 or more… my parents were the ultimate hosts! I am opening this venture as an homage to them, as well as sharing my blessings as a citizen of the world — having lived in the East and the West all my life.

My husband and I decided to finally live in Bali and pour our hearts into this project to share our life story, along with my parents and family’s story, in the form of a restaurant (DI SINI, HERE) and the store (DI SANA, THERE). It is perfectly me — and us! The restaurant is currently being built based on my memory of my childhood: a Joglo

structure that is a combination of traditional Javanese and Balinese structures. I found an antique centre for the structure from Java: an architectural artefact once owned by the royal family. The interior is a mixture of colonial “Peranakan” style, which evokes the romance of the Indonesian era during my grandma’s and parents’ lifetime, with current elements mixed in. I want guests and visitors to feel they are entering a romantic, warm home to enjoy a meal with my parents and family in an elevated hospitality style I enjoy. It will be elegant, warm and welcoming, without the arrogance of a fine establishment. The food will consist mostly of family recipes as well as traditional Southeast Asian dishes. We will also serve Continental and American cuisine based on my preferences and life experiences.

For DI SANA, the store aesthetics will also tell a story based on the Western part of my life. It will be something you may encounter in Paris, London or New York. Besides home décor, antiques and vintage, I am developing our own personal fragrance and home fragrance line and porcelain. I am collaborating with BIKA Living to create a furniture line, as well as with my fellow expat and designer in New Zealand, Patricia Nurchandra. This collaboration with her will include a fabric and wallpaper line based on my life story, which will be available globally. Besides the bells and whistles, together with our fairy godsons, my nephews Ivan and Alain, we have one more important mission: to improve the quality of life of the local Balinese by using DI SINI DI SANA by Rachman and Sons as a vehicle for change. Our employees, purveyors, neighbours, and those who enter our doors — we want to elevate everyone. I also want to showcase our Indonesian craftsmanship and sources, as I believe my home country has been underappreciated for many centuries. I want to change that, one human and one product at a time.

POLISH & POISE

More than a silverware manufacturer, Lauret Studio is a custodian of culture and a creator of beauty, preserving the heritage of French craftsmanship through its enduring commitment to quality, sustainability and artistic excellence.

Surrounded by the lush expanse of the French Vexin Regional Nature Park, an inspiring place in its own right, Lauret Studio, a small atelier lovingly referred to as orfèvrerie d’auteurs — silverware by authors — has not only upheld but redefined the standards of a centuries-old tradition, forging the skill of silver smithing with the poetic grace of art and the functional elegance of utensil design.

Christine Lauret, the founder and soul of Lauret Studio, embarked on this venture late in her life — a bold step to continue the legacy of her husband, Richard, a renowned artist-designer. The closing of the silversmith he worked for in Lyon could have been an end for his work, but Christine saw this as a new beginning. Starting with nothing but a few of Richard’s artist proofs and a vast uncharted territory ahead, she set up shop, rebuilt from scratch, and gathered around her a team that would come to define the silverware studio’s ethos: artisanship, creativity and an undying passion for beauty.

Most of the pieces are designed by Richard, who uses his unique artistic insights to elevate everyday objects into works of art. The studio also collaborates with artists Christian Jaccard and Jean-Charles Maïna, who Richard worked with previously in Lyon, to create distinctive

designs. From eye-catching platters to intricate table accessories, these masterpieces are proudly displayed in the most refined dining environments, prestigious galleries and ambitious design projects, be it on land, sea, or air. However, Lauret Studio’s impact is perhaps best seen in its special commissions. The Montgolfière caviar bowl, a signature piece that was displayed during summer at the Cini Foundation in Venice for the HOMO FABER exhibition in celebration of contemporary craftsmanship, exemplifies Lauret’s reach and artistic acclaim. This piece isn’t just functional; it is a centrepiece that commands attention, embodying the studio’s capability to blend utility with grandeur.

Lauret Studio’s catalogue is a panorama of creativity and versatility. From the bold and mysterious craterlike motifs of Météor to the delicate and serene artistic impressions of Les Jardins de Giverny, each creation reflects a specific theme or inspiration, many of which originate from nature or architecture. Noteworthy is the Plume design, which replicates the delicate beauty of feathers through fine lines, intricate details and textural depth. Like all products emerging from Lauret Studio, this collection is hand-signed by the artist, reflecting genuine handcrafted quality. »

« With Christine’s palpable passion and dedication evident in each piece, the studio has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, fostering partnerships with some of the culinary industry’s most illustrious names. For instance, the Bambou collection holds pride of place in the opulent dining settings of the famed La Villa Treville hotel in Positano, echoing the sophisticated tastes of chef Vincenzo Castaldo. Its design, characterised by fluid, organic lines and an almost ethereal presence at the table, complements the culinary creations it serves. In France, Laurence BonnelAlléno, Artistic Director of Paris’s gastronomic temple, Pavillon Ledoyen, chose Lauret Studio’s sophisticated Metropolis and Antinea cutlery to elevate the award-

winning cuisine served by chefs Yasunari Okazaki and Yannick Alléno at two-Michelin-starred L’Abysse. À La Folie, the bespoke tea-time displays crafted for Maxime Frédéric at the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris and later at Cheval Blanc Paris, is another impressive creation. Lauded with a Tableware International prize for the best in the serverware category, this magnificent design features two upright flowers crafted from silver and finished with satin-white porcelain petals.

Lauret Studio also demonstrates its know-how through its comprehensive services. Recognising its clients’ unique and evolving needs, the studio excels in made-to-measure solutions that meet the most detailed demands, offering »

« everything from tailored table settings for top chefs to collaborative projects that reflect the latest in dining trends and interior design. Whether it’s a caviar display for a high-end yacht or a customised butter dish for a Michelin-starred restaurant, Lauret Studio rises to the occasion with unmatched elegance and expertise. To add a personal touch, elements like gold links, fine stones and even engravings can be incorporated, reflecting the owner’s taste and style.

Steering clear of mass production and taking a staunch stand against the ongoing rise of overconsumption and disposability in the luxury goods sector, Lauret Studio focuses on perpetuating French artistic heritage by creating high-quality, durable pieces meant to be cherished and last a lifetime. The company’s manufacturing process remains

rooted in time-honoured artisanal techniques, involving craftsmen who are not only masters of their trade but are also recognised as “Entreprise Patrimoine Vivant” and “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” — titles that commend their dedication to craftsmanship and tradition. Created as limited editions, each piece from Lauret Studio boasts a distinctive identity — a heart that tells a story of traditions, innovations and the people behind them, from the designers to the craftsmen.

Under Christine’s leadership, the studio not only promises exceptional, tailor-made silverware but also invites its clients into a world where every piece resonates with the spirit of its makers — where art is both seen and experienced. Here, passion meets profession and every creation celebrates the French art de vivre.

TIMELESS TABLEWARE

The dinnerware of presidents and teacups of nobility, Mottahedeh is a name synonymous with unparalleled porcelain craftsmanship, honouring a longstanding legacy of luxury tableware and historical designs.

Mottahedeh, founded 100 years ago and born from Mildred and Rafi Mottahedeh’s passion for antiques, is one of the world’s most distinguished ceramics reproduction companies today. With meticulous craftsmanship, unmatched attention to detail and storied partners, of which there have been more than 20 over the years, including the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Historic Charleston Foundation, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, and the Winterthur Museum and Gardens, Mottahedeh continues to create some of the most highly sought-after porcelain pieces on the market.

For over 30 years, Wendy Kvalheim has guided the company into modern times with a deft hand. For the first 5 years of her tenure, Kvalheim worked closely with Mrs Mottahedeh to learn her craft, absorb her knowledge and understand her unique point of view. With 2025 marking

The Wufu Cachepot (right), adapted from an original antique, features a delicate bat design and 5 curvaceous sides that also symbolise the 5 happinesses.

the company’s centennial, Kvalheim has commemorated this special occasion by publishing Splendid Settings: 100 Years of Mottahedeh Design, a book that not only honours the company’s distinct style —characterised by pristine porcelain bodies, delicate and brilliant colours, and complex curvy shapes — but also forecasts its future directions. This is accompanied by a fascinating story detailing the origin of the objects in their respective time periods.

The lavishly illustrated book takes the reader through the history of porcelain development, which began with the Chinese several centuries before porcelain-making formulas were uncovered in Europe. After the discovery of porcelain in China, Korea was the next region to develop it, followed by Japan. It wasn’t until 1708 that Europeans successfully produced what we now call China. We may barely look at the porcelain we use today, as it has become »

« commonplace and can be acquired all over the globe, but imagine what was used in its place before this invention: pewter and other metals, animal horns and parts, and terracotta bowls and plates.

Mildred and Rafi Mottahedeh were not only luxury dealers but also avid collectors who aimed to document porcelain’s evolution. They collaborated with a team of well-regarded art historians, David Howard and John Ayers, to publish China for the West, a seminal work that deepened the bond between Mottahedeh and various museums. As is showcased in this wonderfully illustrated book, the process of crafting high-quality porcelain remains the same today as it has been for centuries. Ceramic must be baked at a very high temperature — greater than that required to melt metal — so that the stone clay will transform into a glass-like material. After this, colour is added using metallic oxides fused into the plate’s surface.

Beyond its rich history, porcelain remains an integral part of our daily lives, gracing our tables as both functional vessels for serving food and decorative art pieces in the form of flower pots and figurines. Herein lies its true power — it transforms a basic human necessity like eating into an act of aesthetic and communal engagement. We all need to eat. It is a fact that is essential to our material existence. Humans are essentially different from animals in that we have a rational soul capable of imagining and acquiring non-physical knowledge. Eating can be filling your mouth, or eating can be elevated to something extraordinary and

uplifting. It can be good conversation at the point of the day when family or friends congregate. It can be putting food on the table that reflects a tradition of your family or faith. It can be pleasing someone you love by doing something they like. It can be adorning the table with lovely objects of colour and shape for a visual presentation. It can be imparting knowledge at a time when people are relaxed and receptive.

Beauty is the other reason for collecting, using and appreciating objects. They reflect qualities that give us a window into the mind of the artist or creator. The goal is to make something with a level of perfection that gives the viewer an “aha” moment. These examples of flawless design perpetuate through the ages, continuing to remain as relevant and cherished in the future as they have been through the past centuries. Thus, through its work, Mottahedeh continues to be not just a keeper of history but a creator of heirlooms that will enchant and inspire for generations to come. As each piece of Mottahedeh’s porcelain makes its way from the kiln to the table, it carries with it a story of historical significance, artistic dedication and a celebration of beauty that transcends time.
