Sligo Live is made possible by the enthusiasm and hard work of its board, producers and the dozens of volunteers and businesses who contribute time, services and financial support. Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Council both play their part through funding the festival programme. The business generated by the thousands of visitors to Sligo is always a welcome boost to the local economy, especially in these times.

The partnership between Sligo Live and Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival brings a new dimension to the strong historical links between our two cities and countries. We trust this initiative will benefit both.

KT Tunstall Following the success of her recent sold out US solo tour; Sligo Live is delighted to present Scottish Singer-Songwriter KT Tunstall in a fully seated intimate concert in Sligo's newest venue; The Knocknarea Arena. KT Tunstall's hit songs Black Horse and The Cherry Tree brought her into the public eye along with the upbeat and infectious song Suddenly I See. Her recent Scarlet Tulip EP showcases KT’s songwriting in its rawest, most stripped back and intimate form, using just her stunning voice and finger picking guitar. It sees KT going back to her acoustic folk roots and also displays an incredibly versatile side to her talents as a vocalist. She will be performing a variety of songs from her extensive back catalogue, as well as tracks from the Scarlet Tulip EP. KT Tunstall has enjoyed commercial and critical success, picking up three nominations before winning a Brit Award, a Grammy Award nomination and she is also a recipient of an Ivor Novello Award. She has released three studio albums internationally: Eye to the Telescope (2004); Drastic Fantastic (2007) and Tiger Suit (2010).

KT will feature as special guests two of her favourite young musicians, Sam Lewis and Rozi Plain.

Sam Lewis Sam Lewis was KT Tunstall’s guitar player for her world tours 2004 – 2009. He has also performed with Tom Baxter, Duffy and Dani Sicilliano. Sam’s music has a unique modern mix of soulful vocals, heartfelt passionate lyrics with tinges of blues, country, folk and soul, all played with a vitality that is fast becoming his trade mark style: truly unique and beautiful.

Rozi Plain Since she released her debut album Inside Over Here, Rozi has been busy bringing her beautiful, enchantingly brittle and understated music to the people. Her songs possess a certain fragile magnetism that can hush any room in the drawing of a breath. The rare and humble pleasures of Rozi’s live show have led to tours across Europe, the UK & USA.

An Intimate Solo Performance Never one to rest on his past achievements, he is constantly writing, recording and collaborating with other artists, pushing the boundaries of his enormous talent. One American critic described him as “a pop encyclopaedia” based on the huge range of musicality he has exhibited in more than 30 albums and his ability to “reinvent the past in his own image”.

Costello grew up in London and Merseyside as Declan McManus, son of a well known jazz musician, Ross McManus, with Co. Fermanagh roots. Success came with the change of name when he combined his mother’s maiden name and that of his musical hero.

Rachel Sermanni Opening is special guest, Rachel Sermanni, one of Scotland’s most promising newcomers. Rachel performs with her band and has been acclaimed both for her songwriting and performances. Sligo Live is a unique opportunity for music lovers to contrast magical musical experiences with a true rock aristocrat and one of today’s freshest emerging talents.

Elvis Costello Elvis Costello headlines Sligo Live 2011 for what promises to be a really special evening.

This intimate solo performance on Saturday 29th October at IT Sligo's Knocknarea Arena is the legendary musician’s only Republic of Ireland appearance in 2011.

Costello is widely considered to be the UK’s most consistently creative artist and songwriter of his generation. Starting with classic rock songs like Oliver’s Army, Alison and Watching the Detectives, he went on to explore a wealth of musical collaborations ranging from Burt Bacharach to The Brodsky Quartet. He has produced albums by The Specials and The Pogues, and gone down the country road with Almost Blue which included the hit single Good Year for the Roses.

Two Trios - Traditional and Transatlantic

The Unwanted Cathy Jordan, Seamie O’Dowd and Rick Epping formed The Unwanted in 2006, to develop their interests in both Irish and American folk genres. They have gone on to perform in concerts and festivals throughout Ireland and Europe and record their first CD, Music from the Atlantic Fringe.

Matt Molloy, John Carty & Arty McGlynn Matt Molloy and John Carty explore the rich and varied tapestry of the fiddle and flute tradition, the quintessential Sligo style musical combination. Both Matt and John are recipients of the prestigious TG4 Traditional Musician of the Year Award.

From Ballaghadereen, County Roscommon, Matt Molloy is regarded as the greatest exponent of traditional flute playing alive, a member of the Chieftains for more than two decades; he was also a founder member of the legendary Bothy Band and had a spell in the second coming of Planxty. Matt has released several highly acclaimed solo albums London born, John Carty returned to his Roscommon roots near Boyle. He has recorded three solo fiddle albums, two banjo CDs, four group albums and a collection of duets with Matt Molloy. A member of At the Racket and Patrick Street.

They are joined by Arty McGlynn, whose subtle guitar playing is the perfect accompaniment to this unique duet. He played with Planxty, Patrick Street, De Danann and the Van Morrison Band, and has recorded and played with Christy Moore, Paul Brady, Donal Lunny, Liam O'Flynn, the Chieftains and most recently in Tim O’Brien’s The Crossing.

Roscommon born Cathy Jordan, Dervish lead singer, moves effortlessly between Seannós, Appalachian and contemporary folksong, lending rich accompaniment on bodhrán, bouzouki and bones. Her engaging stage presence turns a simple concert into an evening among good friends.

Sligo native Seamie O’Dowd (guitar, fiddle, dobro) grew up steeped in the tradition of Sligo fiddling, expanding to include New World traditions. Today he is as accomplished playing Blues on slide guitar as he is playing jigs and reels.

Rick Epping (harmonica, concertina, banjo, mandolin, jaw harp), a native of California, brings a wealth of experience and authentic style, having played with musical greats like Bluegrass founder Bill Monroe, Texas bluesman Mance Lipscomb and accordionist Joe Cooley, The Unwanted have created a seamless fusion of the music of both the Old World and the New, showing that the process of transformation arising from the musical ebb and flow along the Atlantic Fringe continues today.

This is a joint production between Sligo Live and the Hawks Well Theatre.

Masters of Tradition wishing Sligo Live best of luck for 2011

Seamus Begley and Tim Edey Accordion player and singer Seamus Begley hails from the west Kerry Gaeltacht. A farmer, Seamus has a puckish sense of humour and an indefatigable love of music and song who can light up any room with his personality and presence. He plays the polkas, slides and jigs of his native region and can silence a room with his heart rending songs. Begley is a man secure in his own sense of self and place to imbue the tunes with his own stamp and colour them with his personality.

He is joined by the dynamic guitar player Tim Edey, whose musical understanding of Seamus' music is informed by his own excellence as an accordion player. Their combination makes for exhilarating entertainment. If it's a shot in the arm you're after, Begley and Edey are the men to call on. All the wildness of west Kerry combined with a sublime talent with a featherlight touch, Seamus and Tim breath new life into the tradition.

Leitrim fiddle player Maurice Lennon, (Stockton's Wing) has always had a very strong connection to Sligo. After leaving Summerhill College in 1977, Maurice become one of the youngest ever All-Ireland Senior fiddle title winners. He joined Stockton's Wing and has remained a professional musician ever since, working with legendary artists like John Prine, Sean Keane, Liam Clancy, Sharon Shannon, The Model Donal Lunny. As a composer, Maurice Acoustic Stage Lennon's music has been recorded by Friday numerous performers including Lunasa, Solas, Natalie McMaster, The Nova Scotia Symphony 28th 0ct 9.30pm Orchestra, Cherish the Ladies, and Four Men and a Dog. Tickets â‚Ź10 Maurice is releasing his forthcoming album The Spirit of the Music in the coming months and is delighted to return from 14 Chicago for Sligo Live.

The Scottish Connection at Sligo Live In 2010, Sligo Live entered into an exciting new partnership with Celtic Connections, Europe’s biggest Winter Festival and one of the largest indoor music festivals in the world. This innovative link sees both festivals promoting each other in their home markets and cooperating in many ways. Following Sligo Live’s hugely successful Showcase concert in Celtic Connections and with the assistance of Creative Scotland, we are proud to present a selection of Scotland’s enormous musical creativity. Enjoy the fresh new talent which is attracting so much music industry attention across the water.

The Friels Anna, Sheila and Clare Friel are young traditional musicians hailing from Glasgow with roots in the Donegal Gaeltacht who play a mixture of music interspersed with songs, many from their family repertoire. Being siblings they achieve a close blend on fiddle, flute and uilleann pipes, approaching their music in a style inspired by many encounters with great musicians and singers.

Anna, Sheila and Clare have performed in various venues and festivals including the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of Celtic Connections, the Danish Tonder Festival, Willie Clancy Summer School and the Frankie Kennedy Winter School. They have appeared as guests on stage with acts such as The Chieftains and Altan on several occasions.

Rura RURA combines the passions and influences of some of Scotland’s most exciting young musicians. Featuring three 'BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year' finalists and an All Ireland Bodhran champion, RURA's powerful music is creating a buzz throughout the folk scene. Highland pipes, whistles, fiddle, guitar, bodhran, flute as well as an array of effects pedals create a fierce and versatile sound. Having performed mainstage at a number of major festivals including Celtic Connections in 2011, RURA are fresh from recording their first demo. Rura’s line up at Sligo Live is Innes Watson – Fiddle and Guitar; Steven Blake - Highland Bagpipes and Whistles; David Foley - Bodhran, Flute and Whistles; Chris Waite – Guitar and Adam Holmes – vocals and guitar.

The JPTrio Lively, fresh, adventurous describes this new trad/jazz/fusion sound from the Sligo based JPTrio. Brothers Ted and Jos Kelly and their former Sligo Grammar schoolmate Paddy Hazleton play a melodic and rhythmic fusion of traditional, jazz and world music where Paddy’s subtle driving beats propel the complex and musically sophisticated interchanges between Jos’s accordion and piano and Ted on banjo and tenor guitar.

Admiral Fallow The Staves The Staves are not Scottish at all. They hail from Watford, outside London, but Sligo Live first heard them at Celtic Connections and has included them in the Scottish Connection.

Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor have been making music together since they were children. Singing in perfect 3-part harmony came naturally to these three sisters who were brought up in a house that echoed to the sounds of Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Beatles.

The Staves are now captivating audiences on much bigger stages including Glastonbury and Cambridge- earning rapturous encores with their exquisite songs of love & longing. Accompanied by just acoustic guitar and gently strummed ukulele, their extraordinary intertwining voices melt the most cynical of hearts. From Central Scotland, The Dirty Beggars are five boys born in the wrong country. With the music of the Appalachians running in their blood, their brand of down and dirty bluegrass crossover has been electrifying crowds all over the UK. The Dirty Beggars are Kieran Begbie (Vocals, Guitar), Finn Begbie (Vocals, Harmonica, Mandolin, Guitar), Pete Begbie (Vocals, Banjo, Guitar), Stuart Printie (Double Bass, Dobro, Guitar) and Pedro Cameron on Hot fiddle, blasting out the tunes made popular in the bluegrass revival, as well as their own compositions. Old Crow Medicine Show, Trampled by Turtles, Alison Krauss and Union Station and Dave Rawlings Machine are among their influences. While waiting to release their album, the band has been generating buzz on the UK's Americana, country and bluegrass scenes.

Scotland's Admiral Fallow continues their seemingly unstoppable mission to capture hearts and minds.

They steal the former with beautiful melodies, sumptuous orchestration and bittersweet boy/girl vocals, while unforgettably colonising the latter thanks to lead singer/guitarist Louis Abbott's exquisitely observed hauntingly candid lyrics.

Sligo Live is again joining with CCE Sligo Town Branch to host the Fiddler of Dooney Competition over the October Bank Holiday weekend. The competition, inaugurated in 1965, is one of the oldest and most prestigious instrumental competitions in the tradition and is inspired by the W B Yeats poem of the same name. The roll of previous winners reads like a who’s who of traditional fiddling and includes Matt Cranitch, Cathal Hayden, Liz Kane, Paddy Glacken, Seamus and Manus McGuire.

Competitors have come from all over the country and from traditional musicians based overseas. Competitors need not be tied to any rigid formula or to play in a Sligo style, although Sligo Live celebrates the Sligo style with its infectious lift.

For more than a century there have been strong links between traditional music in Sligo and the U.S.A. To recognise and strengthen this bond The Fiddler of Dooney brings an adjudicator over from America each year. Brian Conway, Liz Carroll, Tony De Marco and Kevin Burke have all filled the role and this year we are privileged to have Maurice Lennon, our Leitrim neighbour, now based in Chicago, who together with former winner, Brid Harper, will judge the competition.

Music lovers, competitors and their families are promised a brilliant weekend of music and hospitality in Sligo. The timing is excellent as the bank holiday weekend is the beginning of the school midterm break. There are two competitions: for Junior and Senior entries, under 16 and over 16 respectively. This year the competitions take place in the Methodist Hall, Wine Street which has an excellent acoustic for music.

This year round session features Collette Sheerin, who recently released her debut album showcasing her singing, composing and her fine flute playing. She will be joined by Swiss born, Anna Houston (Banjo & Mandolin), who in her other life is cellist with the band No Crows and Michael O’ Halloran (Guitar) for some cracking tunes with the odd song thrown in.

The current Fiddler of Dooney; another of the superb young women fiddlers to have won the title in recent years, Rhona Lynch is joined by her brother, Graham, an all Ireland Champion on banjo. The trio is completed by Killian Doheny, who's musicality shines through in his wonderful guitar and banjo accompaniments.

Tommy Mc Carthy (Fiddle)and Louise Costello (banjo) own one of America's best known Irish music bars The Burren in Boston. Both come from strong music backgrounds.Tommy is from a well know Clare music family and grew up in the vibrant London trad scene. Louise is from Tullamore and they now live in Galway Fabian Joyce from Headford will join them on Bouzouki in what promises to be a most exciting session.

Sean (banjo) and Dónal McCague (fiddle) from Co. Monaghan are players of great expressivness, playing energetic Ulster style music adorned with a high level of detail and thought. Manchester born, John Joe Kelly is the king of the bodhran. A musician who has gained many admirers as a member of Flook, The Mike Mc Goldrick Big Band and Tim O Brien's crossing.

Anna, Sheila and Clare Friel are young traditional musicians hailing from Glasgow with roots in the Donegal Gaeltacht.

Being siblings they achieve a close blend on fiddle, flute and uilleann pipes, inspired by many encounters with great musicians and singers including appearances with Altan and the Chieftains. They will be joined by Killian Doheny from Limrick on Guitar and Banjo

The session where the people who have worked so hard to make the weekend a success let their hair down and enjoy three of the most popular musicians in Sligo. Seamie O'Dowd (Guitar/Fiddle) , Mossie Martin (Fiddle) and Sean Carroll (Accordion) are all superb musicians, so you never know who will join them for a rip roaring session.

A legendary ensemble of Fermanagh's finest traditional musicians. Gabriel Mc Ardle is a universally respected traditional singer and concertina player, Jim Mc Grath formally of the The White Island Band is a sweet button box player with a great traditional style. Seamus Quinn's fine fiddle and piano playing playing lends itself to the Sligo Style, so he is in the right place tonight.

Former Shaskeen member, Kevin O Brien, one of the regions finest accordion players, will be joined by legendary flute player Harry Mc Gowan from Achonry. They will be accompanied by proprietor Sean Dwyer on guitar. This esemble can heard every Monday night at the Harp for one of Sligo's longest running and most enjoyable Irish music nights

by Ryan Molloy from Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone, Ryan began his musical life on the fiddle, taught by Bríd Harper. The piano soon followed and it is in this instrument that Ryan now specialises recording on many critically acclaimed albums.

His sparring partner, Rodney Lancashire is from Coothill, Co. Cavan and plays bouzouki, Mandolin, banjo and concertina. Expect to see some of their regular collaborators, but they will still welcome more. so don’t be shy about joining in.

Born in Australia and raised in Sligo, Kieran’s musical background is also diverse. The variety in his Classical & Jazz education is evident in his playing – Kieran’s influences range from Chopin to Nina Simone, from Lennon/McCartney to Scott Joplin and his talent allows him to move seamlessly between genres.

The Scottish bluegrass quintet, The Dirty Beggars, maybe dirty or they may not, but they most certainly won't be begging after the release of their upcoming debut album. But, while waiting to release their album, the band has been generating buzz on UK's Americana, country and bluegrass scenes and performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as at the renowned Celtic Connection.

Willie Kelly is a native Sligo musician but his second home is Nashville, Tennessee. Willie recorded his debut album "In the unlikely event of fire" at Johnny Cash's studio The Cash Cabin in Nashville, produced by Johnny and June’s son, John Carter Cash.

He will perform songs from his album and new songs alongside his favourite covers.

Formed in 2011 and featuring some of the Northwest’s most talented musicians, Sugar Rush is the freshest and most innovative pop band to appear on the Sligo scene for many years! The Speks The Speks are a six-piece traditional Irish music band for children. They live on a mysterious Island off the coast of Co. Clare called Glasses Island where everybody wears glasses! Their debut album recently won a prestigious Parents’ Choice music award in the US where their music has been described as ‘Riverdance for toddlers’ and ‘grown up music for kids.’ They perform their nursery rhymes and sing-along songs set to acoustic Irish music while encouraging kids to sing and dance along. This is a great, fun event for kids.

Hayseed Dixie Always pushing boundaries in extreme and often absurd ways, Bluegrass Rockers Hayseed Dixie return, full of pith, vinegar and a redneck appetite for destruction. Having bluegrassed the hell out of AC/DC and Kiss, to name but a couple of mighty desecrated rock institutions, the Appalachian Hellraisers aim to “drink, cheat, kill and earn our place in hell”. Hayseed Dixie created the musical genre "Rockgrass" fusing hard rock covers from the likes of AC/DC, Kiss and Motorhead with seriously good Bluegrass picking and harmonies. Hailing from the Appalachian Mountains of the Southeastern United States, the band consists of:Barley Scotch - vocals, guitar and fiddle;Reverend Don Wayne Reno banjo and vocals;Deacon Dale Reno - mandolin, guitar and vocals; and Jake "Bakesnake" Byers - bass and vocals Having sold over 500,000 records worldwide, the band has played almost every major European festival, including a Main Stage appearance at Glastonbury.

They perform a mixture of cover versions of hard rock songs and original compositions in a style that is a unique fusion of bluegrass and rock music. Their set ranges from the Metal bands listed to Queen, the Beatles, and their own original music which is a whole different and very funny take on life, love and loss.

The Barley Mob Oddsocks Revival Oddsocks Revival is a hardworking four piece funk, rock and blues band, who are no strangers to rock ‘n’ roll. These Sligo musicians blend classic 70’s music styles with modern tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Their four lead vocalists and harmonies set them apart.

Twin guitar solos, bombastic bass and hard hitting drums echo Celtic rock legends.

Their highly anticipated debut album It’s Time was released last Easter and the band has since been touring extensively in Ireland, the U.K. and on the continent.

The line-up is Anthony Mannion (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Luke Mercer (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Michael Conefrey (Bass/Vocals) and Eoghan O’Kelly (Drums/Vocals) who were schoolmates. They built up a repertoire of original music and gained a reputation for playing lively 2-3 hour sets in the musical cauldron that is Sligo. After University they turned professional and have been on the road for the past two years.

The Barley Mob are a Dublin/ Kildare based band fusing upbeat Reggae grooves with raw and honest Irish Soul - Spreading Positive Music for the Soul. Their uplifting and energetic live gigs have received brilliant reviews. In a few short months they have become firm Sligo favourites.

After emerging in 2010 they have gone on to become one of the most sought after bands on the Irish Music Scene playing over 150 live gigs since May 2010; including a crowd of 6,000 people in Merrion Square Dublin! Under Bare Ben Bulben’s Head Sligo Live has joined with Sligo-based and visiting writers, thinkers and theatre companies to introduce a spoken word and literary strand and produce an innovative and compelling new dimension to the festival.

The spirit of William Butler Yeats lives on in Sligo. His poetic genius and turn of phrase profoundly influence how we see the place, from the ‘light of evening' on Lissadell’s windows, to the curt 'cast a cold eye' pronouncement on the limestone tablet marking the poet's final resting place in the churchyard at Drumcliff.

Under Bare Ben Bulben’s Head is a celebration of the creative imagination in our own time as it ricochets off this Yeatsian legacy and takes off in fresh and unexpected directions.

Rodney Crowell is a 100% pure American country song writing legend. His ‘88 album Diamonds and Dirt produced five No. 1 singles. He won a Grammy in ‘89 for the Best Country song – After All This Time. In 2003 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. To celebrate the release of his memoir Chinaberry Sidewalk, Rodney will play an intimate show singing, playing guitar and reliving the stories in his book. Eoin McNamee was Born in Kilkeel, Co Down. His novels include Resurrection Man; The Blue Tango, Orchid Blue, and 12.23. Paris. 31 August 1997, on the final days of Diana Spencer’s life.

Keith Donald: Over the past forty years Keith has played sax and clarinet, most famously with Moving Hearts, but also with Van Morrison, Sinead O’Connor, Ronnie Drew and hundreds of other acclaimed musicians. The William’s Sisters are young Sligo based singers who made a big impact at last year’s Sligo Live.

Mike McCormack talks to John Waters Factory Performance Space Sunday 30th Oct at 4.00pm

Tickets €8 Acclaimed novelist and short-story writer Mike McCormack reads from his work and talks to John Waters. McCormack's writing depicts a parallel Ireland of the imagination that sometimes seems more 'real' than modern Irish reality.

McCormack argues,The Irish were the great experimental writers - Joyce, Beckett and Flann O'Brien. This parlous national moment may be the time to recover that experimental impulse. McCormack was awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Getting it in the Head was voted a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and Notes from a Coma was shortlisted for the Irish Book of the Year Award.

A story from the collection, The Terms, was adapted into an award winning short film.

John Waters is a writer, playwright and newspaper columnist. His first book, Jiving at the Crossroads, originally published in 1991, is being issued in an updated edition this autumn. His other books include Race of Angels, Lapsed Agnostic and Feckets (50 People Who Fecked Up Ireland), John is an active member of Sligo Live’s board.

Its main protagonist Bónapárt Ó Cúnasa, a resident of the region, embarks on a series of blood curdling adventures, which land him in prison on a false murder charge. Once there, "safe in jail and free from the miseries of life" he settles down to write the most affecting memoir of our times.
