welcome

28.10

Welcome to our twelfth Sligo Live, celebrating our region’s rich tradition of music by bringing some some of the world’s best Folk, Roots and Indie acts to play alongside young emerging talent in an extravaganza of sound and melody. Sligo’s musical tradition brings visitors of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. We welcome you, hope that you have a great time, build great memories... and come back. As our state draws towards the conclusion of a spectacular year of commemoration, Sligo Live commemorates the anniversary of 1916 with rich and varied performances by Irish artists and others closely connected with our country or culture. The 2016 festival is acknowledging the events and concerns which shaped us as a nation by presenting a cross-section of contemporary Irish and Irish-influenced performances across the weekend. Take time during your stay in Sligo to enjoy its natural beauty – the rugged coastline of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way as well as some of the best hill and mountain walking in Northern Europe. Sligo has also recently been nominated in the 2016 ‘Foodie Towns’ competition, so you can enjoy hospitality that is second to none from our vintners, hotels and restaurants who are much appreciated supporters of the festival. Sligo Live Festival is a not-for-profit undertaking and staging it every year is an ever-increasing challenge. It would not be possible without the support of a range of partners, public and private, in particular Failte Ireland and Sligo County Council. They have been joined in more recent times by IT Sligo, Independent News and Media Group, Bulmers and the Western Development Commission. We have to thank too the wonderful team of volunteers who come back to us year after year to make the event a safe and enjoyable one for everyone. Thanks in particular to the team at Sligo Leader who have become a vital part of the weekend’s success. Please spread the word about Music City Sligo. You telling others about your experience in person and via social media is the best way to keep this wonderful festival growing –remember to stick in #SligoLive Have a great time in Sligo, thanks for your support and don’t let it be the last time we see you.

KIERAN QUINN & SEAMIE O’DOWD Kieran Quinn (keyboard) and Seamie O’ Dowd (guitar, vocals) have been carefully crafting their own sound for over two years now. Best described as trad fusion, it also incorporates elements of jazz, blues and folk music. Two skilled musicians in their own right, neither of whom are in any way daunted by crossing musical genres at a moment’s notice, they have combined to produce a new and powerful musical force. Joined on this gig by expert drummer Stephen Kohlmann, this unique trio will play largely original music, peppered with their own eclectic musical taste.

/////////////// Little Green Cars take a cue from the amiable rural rock of the Lumineers, Mumford & Sons and First Aid Kit. The Dublin five-piece  offer up an Emerald Isle take on Americana. They employ generous five-part harmonies over R.E.M. Fleetwood Mac, and Woody Guthrie-inspired country-folk-pop goodness. The band formed in 2008 around the talents of Stevie Appleby, Faye O’Rourke, Adam O’Regan, Donagh Seaver O’Leary and Dylan Lynch, beginning by experimenting with numerous styles. They wrote a mountain of material before inking a deal with Glassnote and heading into the studio with producer Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Björk) to record its 2013 debut album, Absolute Zero. Their second offering, Ephemera, was released this year to critical acclaim.

lynched

Triple nominees in the 2016 British Folk Awards for Best Group, Best Newcomers and Best Album, Lynched are a refreshing and exciting new presence on the Irish folk scene. Lynched are a traditional folk group from Dublin, who combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans irreverent Dublin music-hall and street-songs, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material. Lynched was formed by Ian and Daragh Lynch in the early 2000’s, where they formed friendships with Cormac Mac Diarmada and Radie Peat, and the group quickly became a four-piece. They are heavily influenced by legends such as Frank Harte, Planxty and The Dubliners, but subtle traces of the group’s collective influences can be detected, from American old-timey music, ambient techno and psychedelic folk, to black metal, punk and rock n’ roll.

sara watkins Sara Watkins is a singer-songwriter and fiddler from California. She debuted in 1989 as fiddler and founding member of the progressive bluegrass group, Nickel Creek, along with her brother, Sean, and mandolinist, Chris Thile. In addition to singing and playing fiddle, she also plays ukulele and guitar, and played percussion while touring with The Decemberists. She has just completed a Nickel Creek reunion tour in celebration of the band’s first release in seven years, A Dotted Line.

//////// Mike Scott of The Waterboys, discovered  The Saw Doctors. He also produced the band’s first single, N17, written by singer Davy Carton and guitarist Leo Moran and The Saw Doctors. Mike asked them to support The Waterboys on their six week tour of Great Britain starting in February1989. The Saw Doctors were on their way. The Saw Doctors second release, I Useta Lover, entered the Irish single charts, reaching Number One and remaining on top for nine weeks. Another string of much-loved self-written releases cemented their success. Songs like Red Cortina, The Green and Red of Mayo, Joyce Country Céilí Band, Clare Island and To Win Just Once were adopted as the anthems of an Irish generation at home and overseas. Loved by their loyal fans, The Saw Doctors continue with resilience and effervescent energy.
