Medal ceremony and parade On Saturday 9th July 2011, the Mayor of Wirral, Cllr. Moira McLaughlin, will officially welcome back soldiers from 75 Engineer Regiment (volunteers) after a sixmonth tour of duty in Afghanistan. The Territorial Army soldiers, who are part of 107 Field Squadron (Birkenhead), will briefly parade around Hamilton Square in Birkenhead before 16 of those soldiers who have completed their service in Afghanistan will receive medals in front of members of the public outside Birkenhead Town Hall.
Raving pensioners are a You Tube hit Dancing divas over 55 years of age were recently asked to attend a flashmob in Liverpool One. Over 200 people turned up with hundreds of spectators. Organised by Home Instead Senior Care (Liverpool Central & North, their aim was to challenge the stereotypical image of people over 55 . Organisers Kate and Andrew Erskine said, “Zest for life and having fun is not reserved for the younger generation and together we were able to make a song and dance about it. It shows the world that we are never too old to have a great time, to sing and party in the street.
Shortly afterwards, the Mayor will host a reception in the town hall for the service personnel and their guests, as well as local dignitaries such as the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, Dame Lorna Muirhead, local MPs, elected councillors, former Mayors and war veterans. Wirral’s Mayor, Cllr. Moira McLaughlin, said: “On behalf of the Wirral public, I’m delighted to honour our volunteer service men and women with this civic ceremony and reception. I hope as many local people can come out and line Hamilton Square in support of our returning heroes.”
Words 4 Woods To raise awareness of the importance of our beautiful forests and woodlands, leading education contractor BAM has launched a poetry competition. The contractor has built over 130 schools in the UK during the past ten years. Children between the ages of eight and fourteen are encouraged to get involved, by sending in their inspiring poetry about forests and woodlands. In October, winners from each regional category will go on to be judged to find a national winner. Innovation Centre to offer £multi million boost for local entrepreneurs Entrepreneurs and established businesses from the North West will soon have access to additional business support following the launch of a new incubation hub. The £6 million Riverside Innovation Centre, based at the University of Chester’s Riverside Campus in the heart of Cheshire, is set for a September launch and will offer a variety of facilities to help develop untapped business potential. Jointly funded by the European Development Fund (ERDF) and the University, Riverside Innovation Centre is the first of its kind in Cheshire and will provide city-centre incubation units for fifteen start-ups. Tenants will include graduates starting their own business. In addition to spaces for new businesses, the Centre will focus on support for existing businesses seeking to fulfil their economic potential. Charlie Woodcock, the University of Chester’s Executive Director of Innovation and Development, commented: “This is a huge asset for Cheshire and the North West as a whole. With key support services like Business Link set to close in November of this year it has never been a more important time for us to invest in supporting new businesses in our region. “The Riverside Innovation Centre is a central point which will help address a variety of business needs and the standard of infrastructure, quality of support and ease of access is set to be among the most inclusive and integrated facilities in the North West.”

Pat Smears,, Foo Fighters In an interview with Jenn Nimmo-Smith
As their DVD, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, is released. It is an intimate and comprehensive portrait of the globally popular rock band. How long have you been in Demark for? We just came in for the day actually as we’re playing Stockholm tomorrow, and we only just got here, about half an hour ago! Can you just tell me a bit about your early days in Foo Fighters? Well, it was really fun, and really funny, there was some different people then we have different people now and we made some records, and we went on some tours.
How does it feel to be back here as apart of the Foo Fighters? As we know you went away and then came back. I like it better this time round; it’s more fun this time. We’re all grown up now, I think that helps, I don’t know, it’s just more fun, it’s different and I feel more comfortable.

You were working in Dave’s garage for this album [Wasting Light], a sort of back to basics approach, were you happy with this? Yeah this was easily the best recording experience I’ve had, ever, and the best record I’ve ever made too. Somehow it was really easy, I’ve never made a record that was actually
easy, getting to the end, when it was over, instead of feeling like ‘oh it’s been going on and on I just want the end to come’ but this time it was like ‘oh no! It’s over?!’ Why do you think it was easier this time? I don’t know, there wasn’t a feeling of pressure – Butch helped to make it easy first of all, he fitted in well with everybody, it was like having an extra guy in the band and that made it a lot easier instead of having some boss telling you what to do, if that makes sense. That helped a lot and that we had practised so much before, and doing it at Dave’s house was so much more comfortable than being in a studio – in his own studio, it was kinda cool but still a studio.
In the DVD you had all of your kids running about with you during the recording – do you think that added to the chilled out vibe? Yes definitely, it was really chilled, we would all have lunch together, a lot of the time with the kids, that really helped, just being at Dave’s house helped a lot. What was it like working with Butch Vig on this album? That was really easy, he’s really mellow, easy… he’s really great at what he does, he’s really good at moulding your
songs and making them better, he’s really good at that. He’s really good at making you play how you should play, he kinda does it without making you feel stupid, but confident – somehow he made it ok when he tells you to play something five more times if it wasn’t good enough but he didn’t feel insulting or degrading. He just gets the best out of you, which is great. What were the key inspirations for Wasting Light? I don’t know, I would say the surroundings more than anything. Just the whole way it was done, the surroundings for the whole thing and practising before with Butch and all that stuff it’s one of those records that really took on where we did it.
Foo Fighters have been going for sixteen years, 7th studio album and now you’ve just brought out a new DVD – what made you decide bring out a DVD now? Well, there’s a couple of things; one is we just wanted to document the recording of the record at Dave’s anyway which was kind of the original idea and then it just seemed like the time as it’s been a long time and someone in the band had watched the Tom Petty documentary which was four hours or something like that and somebody said, you know what, we should do this now before it turns into a four hour film! It just seemed like the right time as we were filming anyway to document the making of the record.
Was it always planned or did it just come together, from just filming you guys in the studio? It was decided beforehand; well, originally Dave wanted to do kind of two films; a documentary of the making of the record but also a documentary about the band, but just not at the minute. We just thought maybe we would put this on a CD, throw in a DVD with the CD, maybe we’ll just do this for the fans, in bits and pieces for now, then once James was hired he decided that he wanted the movie to be and it became that. And now its all this! Having watched the documentary it seems to be an open account of the band, how did you feel about talking so frankly on camera? It felt weird, it’s a weird thing to do, a weird thing to watch, it’s great that we did it and all but we’re not going to watch it again! It’s just weird, unless you’ve done it you don’t really know a way to describe it, it’s very strange. Was it quite difficult to watch back? It wasn’t that it’s difficult, it’s just that its, I can’t even think of the word for it, it’s not that it’s difficult. You’re just not used to seeing when you already do it… it’s weird to see you talking on a film, it’s just weird! Documentaries about other bands, yeah love to watch that stuff, but when you’re in it, I mean I like the little part that I wasn’t in!
So watching it back was there anything that surprised or shocked you that anyone else said or anything you saw? There was nothing that shocked me, but there were a few things here and there that didn’t really surprise me but were like ‘oh I never knew that’, that kind of thing, but no – not really.
Moving onto your live shows, obviously you have just done the garage tour in the states, how do you feel about doing those shows in comparison to your bigger arena shows? They’re really hard to compare – theyre really all equally fun, we did a tour where we played in peoples garages in the daytime to about 50 people and that was really fun and different and kind of reminds you of when you first started playing in a band, and we did club shows where we did secret shows and clubs around… 3 hour shows and those were really fun for lots of different reasons for one you can
play the whole new record and open the set with just playing it all which is always really fun and they were long and hot and sweaty and everybody was, two feet from the stage, and now arena shows are obviously great, it’s the best thing in the world but I don’t really have a favourite way to do it, actually, my favourite way to do it is mix them up and always have something different coming up not to far in the future. Now we’re doing festivals so it’ll be really fun, but sometimes we’re doing club tours. It’s just whatever’s different. Do you have any plans for doing something similar, like a garage tour in the UK? I don’t know – I think right now we’re just on a big festival tour, I don’t know, I don’t look at the schedule! It seems like so far its basically just festivals.
With the UK shows coming up, you’re playing Milton Keynes bowl – you’ve played Wembley twice and sold it out twice – how did you feel when you sold out both dates at the Milton Keynes Bowl in such a short period of time? It’s awesome first of all but it’s really exciting to play as there was the famous queen concert at the Milton Keynes bowl in 1982 so whenever we play somewhere like that I have a film of queen playing which is extra exciting – the same thing kinda happened to me from the Wembley show too; I know the venue so well from the video footage so it’s that kinda thing – it feels like ‘wow, really? Us? We’re really doing this place, where this band did this gig?’. Is there anything special we can expect from your upcoming set at Milton Keynes? Yeah – but I can’t tell you! It’s all part of the fun!
You’ve also got a good few support acts, is there any acts in particular you think people should be checking out? I don’t know who they are, you’re going to have to tell me!
In particular you have a Scottish band called Biffy Clyro Ah yes! We’re with them today; we’re playing a bunch of shows with them. We just did a couple of weeks touring the US with them, they’re great, I love one of their albums. We always have a good time with them. You’re headlining T in the Park this year and with Biffy being from Glasgow they’ve got a huge fan base up there. I believe you played T in the Park back in 2002: 2002 I wasn’t around so I don’t know – that’s a Nate question!
How do you feel about coming to Scotland? We’re always excited; they’re a great crowd, one of the best crowds in the world.
What can we expect from the T in the Park headline set? Anything Scottish? Yes – but I’m still not telling you! But nice try. Have you got any good festival stories? No, nothing like that! We’re actually a pretty boring crowd of people. Bring the kids out, have lunch, have dinner, play a show. Any good survival tips for festivals? No; it’s easy, it’s fun. It’s an easy thing to do, no need for survival tips!
You’ve got a set coming up at Oxegen in Ireland, are you looking forward to going to Ireland? Yeah of course, I’ve been many times, great crowds all the time.

Well it’s been a busy month here at makeup towersshoots, couple of music videos ( check out scuzz & kerrang tv for Stormcorporation) and by the time this goes to print I’ll have just finished doing makeup on a sitcom for BBC3!! I’ve also just finished the 1st book in a trilogy called There’s no room for jugglers in my circus by Jason Cook that’s going to be made into a film at the end of the summer ( I’m heading the makeup team for that - very excited!!) and is definately well worth a read as it’s based on true life story. Plus plans for fashion week are hotting up- checkout the facebook page for upto date info. With all this running round I’m missing a tan so far this year, I’m sure I’m not alone.......Think Daisy Lowe, Florence Welch and Julianne Moore. So for those of us without a tan but still want to look fabulous and glowing here’s how to achieve that polished look in under 10 minutes. Use a brightening primer or balm as a base and will help to keep it in place followed by a tinted moisturiser to keep it looking sheer Skin flattering peach highlighters over the cheeks followed by illuminator on the cheekbones, bridge of nose and the cupid’s bow Sheer, light moisture based lipsticks or glosses finish off the look. Some great products to achieve this look include Hydraquench tinted moisturiser by Clarins (£27) and Urban Decay’s tinted moisturiser (£20), Beauty balm by M&S (£9.50), Topshop’s skinglow in light (£10), Benefit’s highbeam (£18), Bobbi Brown’s shimmer brick in pink

ome very exciting news for me is that I recently took part in a photoshoot with the great photographer Clive Arrowsmith, and I finally have the images through. It was a doll themed shoot for a new brand of hair curling tongs called TwiddleStics. The shoot was soo much fun and everyone was really nice and easy to work with, plus I got to rock Agent Provocateur and Yves Saint Laurent for the day. My make up was done by celebrity make up artist Gary Cockerill. He was so lovely and made us look like real life dolls! My dolls name is Twisted Tallulah. TwiddleStics are absolutely amazing and made all the girls hair on the set look effortlessly gorgeous. I can’t wait to get mine! The product itself has been created by Gary and Oli Sunderland, and its ready to be released very soon, so watch this space hair fashionistas! Check out www.dollhaircare.com I felt brave recently and ventured to Sphere Mania near Macclesfield for some aqua sphering. Me and my boyfriend had to roll down a hill in a ball filled with water, yikes! It was very scary but a lot of fun and we got absolutely soaked! Id definitely recommend it for a one off. Me and my friends recently went to watch the one and only Take That at Manchester City Stadium. We started the day out with food and drink at Revolution on Deansgate Locks. We had the most fun and Take That were brilliant!! It was great seeing Robbie back with the band and he performed some of his own greatest hits. There was such a great atmosphere and I wasn’t ready to leave when it was over. Cannot wait for the next tour! I went shopping in Preston at the weekend and purchased the most gorgeous maxi skirt from Topshop. It’s very tribal which is a look a love for the summer. I also fell in love this this super cute trilby, which I can’t wait to wear. It reminds me of Mollie from the Saturdays and I love her style. I headed into Liverpool a couple of weekends ago with some friends as one is leaving to move back to Australia, sob. We had a great night in Alma de Cuba and treated ourselves with the biggest fish bowl I have ever had. It was soo yummy. I definitely need to go again soon just for that. I’m off to Egypt next week with my boyfriend and cannot wait. Definitely in need of some sun sea and sand….and cocktails xxx

Lifestyle Monthly welcomes Heart FM’s popular breakfast presenter as our regular columnist Well what a month, it has absolutely flown by….i am now a year older since writing my last column, big pause ….. I am now 30. You know what? It wasn’t that bad after all, I haven’t suddenly got a full head of greys….or any more wrinkles (well I haven’t looked that closely!) I don’t know what I was thinking would happen but I was scared! I am pleased to report I said goodbye to my twenties in the very best way possible by throwing a massive party. It was a ‘big kids party’ theme, yes ice cream jelly, cheese and pineapple sticks, mounds of sweets a bunjee run and yes we even played pass the parcel and musical chairs!! It was the best party ever………..im just quite sad its over, I dread what the feelings like after a wedding now! Thanks to Stacey Soloman for calling in and singing happy birthday to me on the show, to the Wanted, JLS, Beverley Knight and Louis Spence for all their birthday messages I had the best day. What a weekend it has been locally with the big family event happening at Chester Racecourse. We had been waiting for it for months. Chester Rocks happened on Saturday and it was absolutely amazing. The crowd went wild for The Wanted (they are cute!) Mc Fly, Eliza Doolittle was superb, and The Saturdays looked as fabulous as ever, hope you managed to take lots of pics if you went. So now 30 and more grown up I am starting a healthier approach to my new decade and have enlisted the help of a lovely friend Emily to whip my behind into shape! Yes I want that body I have always dreamed off, except one thing I have all the birthday cake to finish off first!!! Emily is a PT at Hoole Hall in Chester and I have asked her to share with you aswell a little tip that may just help us get into that bikini for the summer. Emily says if you want to burn more calories hours after leaving the gym? Try 15 mins of interval training, this can be running rowing or cycling. All you have to do is do one minute as hard as you possibly can, then allow yourself one minute recovery time, repeat this till your 15 minutes is up. Apparently we will then be burning calories for up to 48 hours after your workout. I love the sound of that and am giving it a go at the moment, hopefully il be a skinny Minnie soon!! Wimbeldon may be over but Masterchef judge, John Torrode popped in to give some advice about strawberries recently. My co-host Spence asked him if he knew why his strawberry plant is not growing any strawberries and John told him that he needs a bee to land on his plant to pollenate on it in order to turn it to fruit, I didn’t know that! Naturally we started talking of the favourite fruit we often indulge in at this time of year and John told us how he loves strawberries crushed up with pavlova turned to eton mess mmm delicious. 16
Just heard that you really can have ‘ the Time of your Life’ in beautiful Lake Lure where much of the classic movie Dirty Dancing was filmed. This Sept sees the second annual Dirty Dancing Festival in North Carolina. Tickets are now on sale. Apparently Prosecco with strawberries works better than with Champagne too and Mr Torrode gave us the perfect idea to use up any left over strawberries. John said put them in ‘’a blitzer with a little bit of lime juice then put in the freezer, after half hour get a fork mush it all up like grenita, then keep doing that every half hour for little while then you have lovely grenita strawberry stuff put it in a glass and pour champagne over it absolutely amazing’’. He also said mash up some strawberries then add vodka it’s the perfect start to your night out – even contains one of your five a day or two of your five a day as John says as it contains potatoes from the vodka!! Cant wait to try that with my girlies!
At the moment I am loving: Loving the fact that Mariah Carey’s baby at just over 2 and a half months stuck her hand up in front of the camera when even her own mummy tried snapping a picture. Yes she is following in her mum’s footsteps! Loving the new menu at Marco Pierre’s restaurant in Chester mmmmm! I want to go back very soon delish! Loving Bridesmaids the new movie - it is a bit like a female version of hangover- it will make you cringe in parts, but it is worth it, very funny grab your girlfriends and some revels!
Not Loving: Not Loving this new idea of putting face powder on before bed, yes the idea of looking great when you wake up next to your partner appeals very much but another item to put on before you go to bed, seems like too much hard work!! Not loving the amount of passwords we all need to remember in a day, my brain cannot take any more I am thinking of making them all the same! Not loving the fact that we have had our mini heatwave and the longest day of summer already, it is all happening too quick! Slow down we want more sun ;-)

I
t's that time of the year when the Spring arrives and the sunny weather just makes you want to sit outside or even bring the outside in! Decking is a great way of doing that. Set each of your 6" by 2" wooden joists about 5mm apart, sitting them on 2 side ledger beams, these can be fitting to the wall or set into the ground. Fix the joists to the beams using an angle bracket to stop any movement. Using a 3mm wood drill bit; drill a pilot hole before screwing brackets in place to avoid timber splitting. Repeat this on all joists until frame is complete. If your joist’s span is more than 2 meters long you will need to fit a centre strut to help support the weight. These can be off
cut sections of the joists screwed into the joist and feasting onto the floor/ base. Now fixing the top decking planks to the frame, it's very important that you get the first board flush with the edge of the frame as this dictates where the rest of the plants will lie. Each plank must have 2 screws fixed into each joist it spans across, again pilot drilled through the planks to avoid the timber splitting. If the planks need joining all cut ends must sit firmly on a joist below. When fitting all planks you require a 5mm gap between each length. This allows any surface water to drain away and also helps the overall look and style to your decking area.

hatever size you are, shopping for clothes can be an intimidating experience. The mirrors, the lighting, the lack of privacy can all add to a nightmare shopping experience. I was invited down for a morning's personal shopping with a budget of £500 to spend in store. A short phone call prior to my visit was made to check my size and what I was looking for - beach wear? Evening wear? Casual? I ticked all the boxes! Armed with a trusty friend for advice we made our way to the third floor. Tucked at the back of the store, you wouldn't know the PS store existed. Through some large double doors you enter a haven of pampering and privacy. Comfortable sofas, cupcakes and juice encourage you to chill out with magazines. Then I was led into my changing room which was like an Aladdin's cave of gorgeous merchandise. Accessories twinkled in the soft lighting - necklaces, belts, bags and shoes. Racks up racks of clothes blocked the floor to ceiling mirrors and large, plump chair. The PS girls had picked out a variety of outfits ranging from my staple wardrobe requirements (leggings) to garments I simply would never choose (tie die chiffon shirt?) Two hours of trying on clothes and I was in heaven. The time flew, I felt like a child again in dressing up clothes. The PS experience left me and my friend feeling as if we had been to a spa for the morning, which was amazing as shopping in town rarely stirs up such emotions! For my £500 I got whole new summer wardrobe: A chiffon dress, summer vest, green satchel, gold sandals, a T for the beach, a tie die dress, chiffon top, summer scarf, 4 pairs or leggings, head band, cardie, red jumpsuit and a chiffon jacket/wrap. The fun didn't end therewalking out of the store laden with bags made me feel like a superstar. Weeks later I am still mixing and matching my outfits and am constantly being complimented on my style of clothes. What is important to note is that the PS is a completely free service with no obligation to purchase. It is suitable for everyone, whether you are looking for a special outfit, or whether you just want to spruce up your current wardrobe, they are there to assist with their incredible style choice. Autumn/Winter 2011 Trends PSYCHOBILLY Psychobilly is an updated and feminine take on the rebellious dressing of the teddyboys of the 1960s. Modern twists elevate sleek tailoring and clean shapes; slim cigarette trousers in an opulent sapphire jacquard are the essential ankle skimming length and a simple t-shirt shape comes in panels of monochrome silk. Be prepared for the unexpected as hybrid garments become key; a royal blue wool crombie has soft black leather sleeves whilst the classic sweatshirt is luxurious with faux fur sleeves. Prints are bold with polka dots and window pane checks splashed across chiffons and silks whilst colour blocking features in ‘dad’ sweaters with the occasional punky motif. A much more hourglass silhouette takes over from that of the boyish with semi body-con dresses celebrating the waist and skirts predominantly in pencil or mid-calf length.
THRIFT Mixing elements of the laid-back 60s with a neater finish from the 40s post-war Britain, Thrift is an eclectic dressing-up box of girly vintage-inspired pieces. Dresses are ladylike in pretty florals and ditsy prints, appearing in a classic tea dress or drop waist shift shape and look newest in mid-calf length. Again, skirts are longer in length, are sometimes pleated or with side slits and look prim when worn with feminine peter pan blouses buttoned to the neck. Pretty detailing such as petal cut-outs around the neckline, lace inserts and contrasting panelling create interest whilst elegant beading on dainty pouch handbags finishes off the look. Colour is important; tapered trousers come in jade or tangerine and bright prints appear throughout, whilst the overall silhouette is soft and feminine.
GLAMROCK Glamrock draws inspiration from the 1970s, dismissing any grunge from the decade for an all-out glamorous and rockstar look. Faux fur is key to this trend and the bigger and brighter the better; an oversized shaggy coat made from goat hair comes in a fluoro pink, a sleek faux-fur stole in deep amethyst has extravagant pompoms and a mini skirt is made from amber-coloured feathers. Casual garments are given luxe treatment; a simple black parka is indulgent with a thick glossy black faux fur lining, skinny jeans are given a hitech coating and boxy silk shirts are elevated with all-over beading. Footwear and accessories are flamboyant with stack-heeled ankle boots covered in silver glitter and oxblood velvet clutch bags with gold jacquard panels. Emeralds and magentas interspersed with shimmering gold and silvers make up a jewellery-box colour palette.
BAVARIA With rich folkloric inspiration being key, Bavaria is a modern and distinctly luxurious take on keeping warm this winter. Outerwear is functional whilst indulgent; a khaki parka has faux fur sleeves and a gilet is extra long and made from patchwork sheepskin. Cable and aran knits are chunky and oversized to defend against the cold, and a usually floaty smock dress or blouse comes in a cosy heavy velvet. Handcrafted touches add texture and appear throughout with detailed embroidery on yokes and opulent beadwork on accessories.

Tell us how important your heritage has been in influencing your designs My heritage definitely has strong influence on my design aesthetic. It is who I am and part of how I create. It’s a very diverse brand, with eastern and western combinations in design, and internationally suited for almost everyone to wear it without any inhibitions or restrictions. Tell me about the textiles you use We use all type of high quality fabrics like silk, velvet, chiffon, jorjet, organza, mesh etc, around the globe. You had to drop out of LFW to go to LA (!) what will you be showcasing there Yes unfortunately I have to because the dates of LFW and LA fashion week are clashing. In LA Fashion Week I am show casing spring/summer 2012 collection. The line will be sexy and romantic in a very unique way that inspires women and makes them love to wear it. Do you have a favourite style or colour I have a few favourite’s. One of them being a long red evening dress with swarovski embellishment, very glamorous. Who are your influences in the design world Alexander McQueen, Zuhair Murad and Ella Sab. Who would you like to dress? Katy Perry and Emma Watson. What do you love about fashion shows Shows give designer’s a chance to showcase their collection in front of consumers, retailers, media and gives the chance to promote ourselves. What current designs are you working on I just showcased my line in Brighton fashion week this month you can see the collection on my website www.princefashion.co.uk or facebook page “Sexy and Luxurious Women Wear Fashion Brand”. Currently I am in production mode and filling orders. Who are your clients I don’t design for specific people. I design for women who want something sexy, glamorous and would not be afraid of taking risks. Where do you see yourself in 2 years? It may be difficult to give you the answer of this question. Next two years onwards, in present conditions, are hard to predict. Having said that, nevertheless, I plan to move my brand in most parts of Britain into top retail outlets and to take it further across the UK. Liverpool is hailed as a style city - what would your style influence on the city be? It would be rock ‘n‘ roll party style with a touch of eastern work. What is the most fulfilling thing about your job To see people happy and confident wearing my dress. Is there anything frustrating about the fashion industry The only thing is, students graduating from university and no one gives them chance to get experience even if they are willing to work for free. It’s happened with me and here lots of other students are in same situation. What advice would you give a fledgling designer? Be innovative, distinctive from other designers, don’t be afraid to experiment and most of all be patisiant and believe in yourself.

STARS turned out for a charity golf day hosted by leading autobody repair specialists The Karl Vella Group which raised £13,000 for their chosen charity Macmillan Cancer Support. Ex- Everton and Scotland star Graeme Sharpe and ex Welsh rugby International Steve Moore attended the event at Formby Hall Golf Club on Friday. It was held to celebrate the Group’s 25th year in business as well as to raise funds for the charity. Delifonseca’s celebrated its 5th birthday with a city centre pop up garden in the middle of Stanley Street, complete with turf, a BBQ, deck chairs and live entertainment. They also held a popular baking competition to find their ‘2011 Delifonseca Honorary Cake Maker’. Proprietor Candice Fonseca said: “We’ve had a great five years in the city and we wanted to celebrate by putting on a series of events for the local community. People were able to have a mooch around the new look store and see just how our neighbourhood deli has been transformed over the years.

RICHIE DOWNES Team Kabon Liverpool cage fighter, Richie Downes is now training for his next fight in September. The 32 year old has only lost one professional fight out of nine that he has taken part in. He trains for four to five hours a day to ensure he is in tip top condition. He said, “Fighting is not the barbaric sport some people perceive it as. It’s a very disciplined sport which involves a lot of hard work and training. People don’t realise what we have to put ourselves through. Fighting has so many techniques which you must learn both on the ground and stand up. I love the sport, my fight 4th June was awarded fight of the night, my third time i’ve had this”. He added, “Training Can start anywhere from 8-10 weeks prior to the fight. Starting with changing my diet and cutting weight. I train upto 3 times per day for at least 4-5 hrs per day. Each session consists of a different discipline. Morning - Luta Levra and wrestling, Afternoon - Strength and conditioning, Evening - Mui Tai. You need to be very disciplined on yourself and be prepared to put in the hard work and determination to get to your peak condition”. Cage Fighting - or Mixed Martial Arts as it is known in the industry, is a full contact combat sport that allows a variety of fighting techniques and skills from a mixture of various martial arts such as Wrestling, Luta Lievra, Mui Tai and BJJ. It is the fastest growing sport in the world.

NATIONAL LIVERPOOL MUSEUM OPENS The largest newly-built national museum in Britain for more than a century, the new Museum of Liverpool, will open on Tuesday 19 July. One of the world’s leading history museums and a stunning new addition to the city’s famous waterfront, the Museum of Liverpool is the first national museum anywhere in the world that is devoted to the history of a regional city. Demonstrating Liverpool’s extraordinary contribution to the world, it will showcase popular culture and tackle the social, historical and contemporary issues of the city. ndrew Cornall the Artistic Director of the Chester Summer Music Festival is busy putting together the final details of the 2011 festival. However, below is a preview of some of the great events we are putting on this year. Chester Summer Music Festival has a strong theme of celebrating the voice and music written for the voice and throughout each year’s festival programme you will find major choral concerts from internationally and nationally known artists. There are many outstanding choral events this year including:
• The Kings Singers making an appearance with their concert entitled “WILL YOU WON’T YOU JOIN THE DANCE?” an entertaining exploration of music inspired by dance over the centuries, from Benjamin Britten’s Choral Dances from “Gloriana” to Gyorgy Ligeti’s The lobster quadrille – 2nd July • A brand new show from Richard Rodney Bennet and Claire Martin called “A COUPLE OF SWELLS” celebrating Richard’s 75th Birthday with classy arrangements including such classics as ‘Let’s face the Music and Dance’, ‘How deep is the Ocean’, ‘What’ll I do?’, ‘Cheek to Cheek’ and ‘Let yourself go’ – 10th July
• Another choral highlight is the Gabrieli Consort joining the festival on Thursday 7th July in the atmospheric surroundings of Chester’s famous cathedral for a spine tingling performance of Bryd’s The Great Mass • Our final big Choral event will be of course the Chester Festival Chorus along with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Closing the festival on July 16, they will be singing Vaughan Williams’ beautiful 5 Tudor Portraits under the baton of John Wilson. The Chester Festival Chorus has a long history and is one of the very few choir’s that exist in this format within festivals.
It is a unique opportunity for amateur singers to work with and perform with national and international professional musicians and as is tradition they will close the festival.
• The BIG SING! our interactive community event returns for its fourth year and is growing in stature and size, so much so it will be spread over the weekend of 2nd-3rd July. Over 22 choirs from across the region descend on Chester city centre and bring the streets alive for an entire weekend. As well as the choral theme which threads through the festival other musicians are featured, including:
• Internationally renowned jazz pianist, Stefano Bollani, will open the festival with a concert in Chester Town Hall’s Assembly Rooms, where he will play his own music in his usual eclectic style. 1st July
• Violinist Ruth Palmer will be continuing the Hidden Acoustics project in Chester with performances in the 11th Century Water Town (located on Chester Walls), the Chester Town Hall and the Chapter House in Chester Cathedral, all stunning locations with stunning acoustics – 12th July From 1st July to July 16th, along with these highlights, other concerts include • Czech violinist, Pavel Šporcl in a programme entitles “Gipsy Way” • The Doric Quartet with pianist, Kathryn Stott • 4 Girls 4 Harps • Jack Liebeck, violinist and winner of the 2010 Classic Brits “Young British Performer of the Year” • Emily Portman Trio • tenThing Brass Ensemble with Tine Thing Helseth • Full Lunch time programme, featuring young up and coming artists • A full community programme • A full education programme introducing Cheshire families to the Suzuki Violin method.

Lulu S o what are you doing at the Eisteddford Festival? I love festivals and this covers all areas over many different eras of music. I am going as “Lulu and Friends”, Kiki Dee is also coming. We are going to be singing and it will be a fabulous night. Do you ever think that you should be slowing down now? Well there are plenty of times when I am sat at home catching up on all my shows on Sky plus. But I still like to be out there. I am having a lot of fun.
How did you cope appearing on Celebrity Juice? Oh Keith Lemon is adorable. I met him of Let’s Dance and he asked me to go on his other show. I am a big fan of Fearne Cotton and Rufus as well, they were all so nice to me. I haven’t watched myself on it yet but it was so funny. Keith Lemon is disgusting, he says some disgusting things…. But I like him, he’s really charming.

How did you get into bringing out your own skin care range, Time Bomb? Do you know, I could pinch myself. I never thought for one second that I would have started another business in my 60s. And I sell thousands of products! But the entertainment business is so tough, you have to focus to look good, appearance is so important so I exercise. I had acne as a kid and I take a lot of care over my skin. I educated myself in skin care to try and banish the
How do you feel when people call you a national treasure? Ah it’s very nice, I am part of the wallpaper now. It is definitely something to be proud of. I am proud to be British. I think the Royal wedding helped, it has brought people together. What do you think about the reality talent shows? Well I am totally obsessed by American Idol. The auditions blew my mind. It has to be all about the music rather than all about their family stories. But there is a lot of talent out there and although there are a lot of same old- same old talent shows I am looking forward to the return of the X Factor. Simon Cowell better knocks our socks off! Who is in the media who has caught your eye recently? Well I think Jessie J is very talented. And very grounded too. And there is a guy called Zeus who is a genius songwriter. I have been working with him and he is going to be big, I tell you. What have you got planned for the rest of the year? I am writing a sitcom with a couple of friends which is a lot of fun, but it’s a bit hush hush as we don’t want to jinx it. Plus I am off to the west coast of the States to record an album. And the BBC are producing a 90 minute documentary on me. And of course I will always make time for my lovely granddaughter who is 18 months old. Where is home for you? London of course, although I do love travelling. I am a city girl so I like Europe, in particularly Italy. What was your last memorable trip? I recently went to Cambodia with Elton John’s charity which raises awareness about HIV and aids. I was very moved by what I saw, it was a very sobering experience. At times it was distressing and quite horrific and other times uplifting. These women are looking after children alone while virtually the men either disappear or spend the time getting drunk. So these women are coping with so much with very little support. These women are a great source of strength. Lulu will be appearing at the Llangollen Eisteddfod of Music and Dance 4-11 July
