Enda Rylands, General Manager, Ramada Plaza Southport Our first advert worked a treat!”...”We’ve had a really good response so please keep our advert in each month!” (at least for the next three months)” You ran a full page advert for us in the Summer on the inside back cover to tell people about our insurance assessing, which was very well received and we have had some clients coming as a result - so thank you! Because of this, we would like to book a regular monthly advert in Lifestyle Monthly Magazine... Nik Ellis, Managing Director Amanda Moss is an amazing person who is full of infectious energy and at the same time highly professional. Go on it’s LiverpooL Go on it’s Liverpool has been launched because an estimated 100,000 people in the city have never used the internet. The initiative is also being backed by Unionlearn, the TUC scheme which encourages members to improve their skills; Race Online and UK Online. The aim is to get an extra 25,000 people in the city online by March 2012 – supported by 5,000 ‘digital champions’ across all sectors of the community. Work is currently underway with a raft of employers across the city to encourage them to get computer literate staff to take part. Steve Rotheram MP said: “I am absolutely delighted to sign up to become a digital champion, because being computer and 8

internet literate gives people a huge advantage when competing 14for jobs. Martha Lane Fox, who leads the national Race Online campaign to encourage people to use the world wide web, has been in Liverpool recently to launch “Go On it’s Liverpool” and will also visit the city on 16 November for Global Women’s Enterprise Day – raising opportunities for women to be enterprising and improve their prospects through the web. Charlie Adam delighted young aspiring footballers from the Chinese Pagoda Community Centre in Liverpool when he took part in a Q and A session with them as part of the LFC Equality 4 All project. The Scottish international paid a special visit to the Liverpool Aquatics Centre in Wavertree to tell them about his Liverpool career so far. Over 30 teenagers, between the ages of 14 to 19, enjoyed their usual weekly football session in front of Charlie, before he answered their questions and signed autographs Liverpool’s No.26 told the lads they must work hard and be dedicated if they want to achieve their footballing dream. He said: “It’s always good to give something back to the community and at a club like Liverpool FC this is so important. Liverpool FC Social Inclusion Officer Rishi Jain said: “With the Equality 4 All Project we do 18 hours coaching a week with kids from different areas and ethnic minorities and bring them all together through football. “The Liverpool Football Club Equality 4 All Project is absolutely brilliant and without their support we wouldn’t be here today. The community coaches are always fantastic and the work they do is invaluable.” Little Atom Productions’ have announced a much awaited ‘Club Geek Chic In Conversation’ events in the Concert Room at St George’s Hall in Liverpool on Saturday 4 February 2012, with Liverpool-born actor Paul McGann. s JLS headlined at the Radio City Live show at the Liverpool Echo Arena last month, we got to chat with the fab four.

They have come a long way since becoming runners up in The X Factor three years ago. The most successful boy band to emerge from the Saturday night staple show they are now on their third album and have sold over three million records. So what was it like performing in front of the Liverpool crowd? JB said, “It was good, they are a great crowd,” with Aston adding, “ I love the scousers, they even cheer in scouse. I have loved the accent since I was like, ten years old.”

massage in the afternoon to limber up for the night’s performance. Austin said that on average they spend between an hour and an hour and half to get ready. Marvin added, “Of course it is important to take care of ourselves by high maintenance? No, just normal.”

Their third single from their third album, Jukebox. The single, Do You Feel What I Feel, is released this month. JB said, “It is very exciting, it has a twist in it. Each track in the album has something special, but with this single we took and sample and messed about with it. Our producer came up with the idea and we have produced something that you will recognise but there’s a whole lot more to it.

So what does 2012 have in store with Jack the Lad Swing? The boys are currently in negotiation with Jedward to perform together. Marvin said, “Yes, we are looking to collaborate with Jedward, I have seen them perform and they are doing well, the boys have so much energy so it’s exciting.”

At the time of the interview, the band were just gearing up for Christmas and most of the members had a specific present in mind. JB wanted an old fashioned authentic action man, Marvin had his eye on some jewellery, Otis wanted vide games while Austin was still recovering from partying the night before the concert with The Wanted. He said, “last night we were dancing on the table and you know when you look at something and you get scared, well that was how the dancing was and it sort of worried me. I was getting some strange looks. It was very good night though. With millions of adoring fans, do JLS consider themselves high maintenance to keep looking so polished? Otis revealed that he had a Thai 18 10

BRITAIN’S MOST BRUTAL BLOGGER How did you get involved with Desperate Scousewives? Splash media asked a friend of mine to get involved with casting as she is from Liverpool and knows who’s who! I has been approached by so many companies wanting to make the scouse TOWIE so i didnt really pay attention to begin with,it was only when i met Tiffany from Splash Media and listened to her ideas and vision for the show that i knew i had to be part of it! I love it so much and we work so hard. Im proud to be part of this.

but i dont do it for the sake of it. That is just plain nasty and believe it or not, I’m not a nasty person.

Lifestyle has known you for a while, what made you decide to set yourself up as a blogger-? I have tried acting, singing, presenting - the competition is massive so i sat down and thought of a way to get myself into the celeb industry! Ive always been known for my strong opinions and my “tell it how it is” attitude so i thought, why not make a living out of that! My friend helped me set up my 1st website and within a few days id had over 50k hits! (thanks to an interview with my old friends JLS haha) I feel like this is my niche and im bloody good at it! The UK doesnt get blogging as much as the UK does so thats why its so hard to be as big as Perez and Tila Tequila.

What do you think of the Liverpool scene, is it all glamour and glitz? Liverpool is just London but with a better sense of humour and a warmer feeling to it! Liverpool deserved the capital of culture award, the girls dress and present themselves so well and the lads are just HOT!!! There is nowhere else i would want to live!

Do you ever feel you go over the top If i go over the top its because at the time thats how i feel. I have a heart like everyone else so there are times that i sit back and think “yep shouldnt of said that” but I hardly ever say sorry unless i mean it 100%. Do you intentionally hurt people’s feelings? Hell no!! i could say sooooo many things about some people, i could break relationships up,expose in the closet celebs, reveal secrets 16

Where do you get your ideas from? I just keep an open mind and write about what im thinking at the time,i dont follow the trend. For example most of the UK love Cheryl Cole- i cant stomach her so i dont just kiss her bum to follow the majority! Alot of people hate Katie Price- i admire her and wont just pick on her because the readers want me to.

And the scousebrow? Hahahahahahaha! Well, this bad boy has been around for years. LOVE IT! How has Desperate Scousewives changed you? It’s made me stronger as a person as i get so much abuse! I’ve had to learn to ignore it and embrace my own insecurities such as my weight, etc so that all these insults dont hurt me. Being on DSW has also taught me that EVERYTHING i can say can be twisted to look negative i have become much more professional in my way of speaking and writing. What plans have you got for 2012? To be the new Katie Price haha! No seriously, ive got my own nightclub brand now, working on

celebrity interview

a clothing range, writing a book, lose 23 stone coz im a fat ox!! im looking into opening a charity to help kids live their dream! I didnt come from a rich background and even though my mum did all she could,it was hard for me to get into the industry! I want to help others get their dream job. Tell us a secret about yourself. I am gay.,No seriously I am like an open book. Maybe i should learn to hide stuff about myself abit more so i get in less trouble! If you could do any reality tv show what would you sign up for? Big Brother!! I was suppose to go in a few years ago as i was good friends with Jade Goody and wanted to carry her spirit on as a tribute! :( I’d smash it! Strictly is hard work,Dancing on Ice-id break my neck.I’m a celeb would be hell! i cant even eat veg never mind an animals penis! Im such a fussy eater.

Do you have any regrets about anything? I don’t do regrets! Everything happens or doesnt happen for a reason. What is your favourite topic to blog about? New talent. Dont forget i was there at the beginning of JLS i single handedly promoted them all over the North west before and during Xfactor. Liverpool is full of amazing talent such as Chelsee Grimes and Esco Williams i WILL get these people out there to the wider audience. Tell us something juicyAn orange. Will you be presenting an award at the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards? Well, you will have to ask this sexy mama-her name’s Amanda Moss and she is the woman in charge of that!!

THE VIRTUAL FACELIFT

called a liquid facelift. The Virtual Facelift involves the use of strategically placed fillers to replace lost volume. Fillers are injected over the cheek bones and into the cheek fat pads. As well as replacing lost volume this also has a lifting effect on the sagging tissues of the lower face. Any remaining skin folds, wrinkles etc can also be filled out.

As we age there are two major changes that happen with the face. 1.We lose volume 2. Skin tone and elasticity diminish. Volume is lost from both the bone of the skull and cheekbones, and from the fat pads in the cheek and mid face. Skin and soft tissues start to sag giving the appearance of jowls and more lines and wrinkles.

To complement the effect of the filler we can also use botulinum toxin (Botox) to target any of the facial muscles that have a downwards pull, thereby causing the muscles that work against them to be stronger, adding to the lifting effect. For example if we target the frown we can achieve brow lift, or if we target the muscles that pull down the mouth corners then the corners of the mouth turn up. Weakening the muscle under the skin

A youthful face is shaped like a “V”. An ageing face, with volume loss and skin sagging is more like an “A”, with narrowing of the upper face and a widening of the lower face. Everyone is familiar with the surgical facelift but for some people surgery is not an option. A non-surgical solution to an ageing face is the Virtual Facelift, sometimes

of the neck (platysma) where it inserts along the jaw can tighten up the jaw line. When the fillers are injected with a cannula the there is no bruising so the virtual facelift has hardly any down time. To freshen up the appearance of the face skin treatments such as Teosyal Redensity to hydrate the skin and enhance its light reflecting properties, chemical peels or tightening treatments with radiofrequency, infra red and electromagnetic energies can be added in. It is the combination of all these non surgical treatments that gives rise to the Virtual Facelift. Looking 10 years younger can be possible without going under the knife.

ROSSIE

lundell Street is one of Liverpool’s premier cabaret restaurant and live music bar. With a superb dance floor, cabaret and tribute acts booked throughout the week, you are guaranteed to be entertained. The restaurant seats 140 people and serves a set menu of two or three courses. As we were dining the week before Christmas it seemed obvious to be eating from the Christmas menu. There was a choice of four simple starters; soup of the day with french bread, warm avocado and pear, smoked salmon with a red onion garnish and chicken liver pate, the latter which was the favourite choice for our table. It was delicious and very generous in its portion size, my only niggle was that we didn’t get enough bread for the pate. For mains there was the choice of a spinach and brie filo pastry, wild mushroom risotto, pan fried sea bass or turkey escalope with all the trimmings. The lamb and turkey dishes were our choices and again, were served on large platters, swimming in piping hot gravy, just the way I like it. The vegetables were perfectly crunchy, while I have tasted better roast potatoes and the turkey was far too salty. For desert I settled on a latte, which hit the spot, while my fellow guests shared the meringue and fruit dish and chocolate fudge cake. You certainly couldn’t fault them. The waitresses were attentive and very friendly and the drinks flowed all night. Along with the great company, the exceptional entertainment made this visit a worthy night to remember and great fun was had by all. The Michael Jackson tribute act was outstanding and it you closed your eyes you couldn’t really tell the difference. Honestly.

Blundell Street should be your number one choice for a brilliant night out, combining traditional tasty food with great entertainment with a fantastic atmosphere. You certainly get value for money here and Lifestyle will be rebooking very soon.

ell, what a bohemian feel you immediately get as you walk into Circo. Greeted by 2 marvellous life sized horse statues, we were pleasantly shown to our seat by the manager, Connor. We were handed their brand new winter menu. Liam, who produces the Anton Power Powerhouse show on Radio City at the weekends, myself and one of Liverpool’s proudest sons, Craig Philips, were seated adjacent to the wall to ceiling windows over- looking the Albert Dock with the Liver Birds peering down on us. It was a picture perfect setting for the evening.

We had a selection of starters including a Stuffed Portobello Musroom filled with Stilton on wilted spinach and graduated with fine breadcrumbs. Even the garnish salad that accompanied the starters was finely picked and dressed superbly. And I defy anyone to find a tastier deep fried Brie as the one they serve in Circo which they get it directly from Somerset. Again a tasty coating with a hint of Garlic with a redcurrant jelly almost relish like. We then had the Chicken Liver Parfait, very rustically served with char grilled toast and the most unusual Fig and Cranberry relish. I could easily have eaten a bowl of that on its own. We all shared the 3 starters. My personal favourite was the Brie, Liam liked the Stuffed Mushroom and Craig thought the Chicken Liver parfait was tops.

All the starters were Treeeeee-Mendous ! ! We then moved onto the Main Courses. Again a selection of 3 came to the table including a loin of cod, roasted in a herb crust on a bed of Saffron fettuccini with white beans, clams and chorizo. Fillet of Beef on a roasted potato , served with winter root veg garnished with a braised cabbage leaf stuffed with oxtail – this has to be tasted to be believed. And if you love Game you’ll devour the loin of Venison on a bed of tangy crunchy Red Cabbage. Again picking the best dish was the tough job, in fact we couldn’t pick one. Pudding was mmmm! Now I’m not normally a pudding kind of guy but the selection that was brought out was very quickly demolished including a to-die-for Chocolate Fondant with the Gooiest chocolate middle accompanied by Chocolate coated pop candy , and boy does it pop. Also you have got to try the bubble gum shot alcohol free and its delicious. There was also a profittor roll cake and the lightest Apple crumble you are ever likely to taste with homemade custard. This small menu packs a BIG PUNCH. I have to say, of all the wonderful restaurants I’ve reviewed in 2011, this was the best food I’ve tasted. Liam, Craig and myself all said we’ll definitely be back for more. Words by Simon Ross “Rossie”.

killing almost two thirds of that number – a death rate of over 70 per cent - which is why our research is so crucial.” Cherry also met with Debbie Taaffe, 48, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in June 2010 to find out more about the disease and why it is often dubbed the ‘silent killer’. Debbie said: “I am absolutely determined to raise awareness about this horrible disease and its symptoms – the more women that know what to look out for, the more will be saved through early diagnosis. The problem is not that the disease is ‘silent’ and doesn’t have any symptoms, it’s that they are often confused with other issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and gallstones.

TV PRESENTER CHERRY HEALEY BACKS OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN WITH VISIT TO LIVERPOOL

“The message I want to get out there is that women need to listen to their own bodies and seek medical advice if they experience any of the following symptoms: persistent abdominal and pelvic pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits, loss of appetite and fatigue. Smear tests do not pick up ovarian cancer so it’s important for women to spread the word to their friends and family – it’s about creating a ripple effect.”

Cherry’s involvement with the O-Very campaign is hoped to encourage ladies around the country to hold their own fundraising and awareness drives on Friday 2nd March – O-Very Day – to coincide with ovarian cancer awareness month.

The work by Dr Daimark Bennett and his team is one of several cancer research projects that NWCRF is currently funding. The charity spends nearly £1million each year providing grants for fundamental research in the North West of England and Wales into the causes of cancer and how it spreads.

Dr Daimark Bennett said: “Because ovarian cancer is often only detected when it has spread to other organs our research primarily looks at the ‘pathways’ the disease uses to permeate other organs which will help us better understand the disease. ON THE ROAD Tell us about your history in the music business I started playing guitar at the age of 5, and was playing in bands by the time I was13. I hit the local club scene with my band VICE, which later became THE KILL. I knew I wanted to be a producer /engineer, I always enjoyed recording the songs we wrote and working with sounds. My 1st big break was when I was recruited for Island Records recording artist’s The Boo Yaa Tirbe. I co wrote Pickin Up Metal, with John Obrien and the TRIBE. It was the first real thrash rap song of the time, with a totally different style. I went on to join The TRIBE in 1989, did a world tour. Played The Glastonbury Music Fest in 1990 and performed on The Arsenio Hall Show, all with The TRIBE. Currently I am freelance producer /engineer/ guitarist I’ve started my own record company, Ken Villeneuve Productions. I want to bring Music That Matters to the world at a high level of recording.

Who have you worked with? Over the years, I have had the pleasure and honor of working with: The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Lionel Ritchie, Don Henley, Motley Crue, Ice-T, Rod Stewart, Bob Seger, Ozzy Osbourne, Luther Vandross, Bon Jovi, The Smashing Pumpkins, Rascall Flatts, Black Crowes, Danzig, Die Krupps, Biohazard, Boo Yaa TRIBE, Joe Cocker, Mariah Carey, 112, Soundgarden, Motor Head, Tony Iommi, Mars Bonfire, Tyreese, Wyclef Jean, Pete Yorn,Elton John and more... Tell us about your new single. “Who am I, Who are you’?, is a cosmic journey through my eyes, about my travels throughmy life, to find the truth. Where did you draw inspiration from? From my own life experiences, from the people I have known and places I have been. Also its usually the way that I feel at the time that sets the mood of my songs. I draw so much inspiration from my girlfriend, the love of my life. How do you go about writing lyrics? The words usually just come to me when I turn on the microphone, then I revise them to fit and work better for the song. My lyrics decipher what my music is saying.

WITH KEN VILLENEUVE

What’s the key to success in the music business Don Henley told me, “Hard work and repetition, the names will change but the faces will stay the same.” I understood what he meant as I grew and progressed in my career. While working for Herb Alpert all those years at A&M Studios in LA, that it’s all about hard work and dedication. I also had a great mentor, Shelly Yakus, he taught me everything about recording and how to listen. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards showed me that true friendship makes for an amazing collaboration. What do you think of American Idol and similar reality shows? I can’t stand them, it’s a giant kareoke contest and then when they win they make you listen to thier crappy music, it killed Rock n Roll . It’s a big music monopoly by FOX. Interviewing every kid In America and taking them and making them stars....It’s a joke. I remember when Randy Jackson and I were working with Richard Marx, Randy was on Bass, he told me about the show that destroyed rock culture! Every kid thinks they are a star, without paying dues, what makes you a star and a true artist is what you have been through and what you have to offer the world. If you can walk, you can dance, If you can talk you can sing, but are you a dancer or singer?? The answer is NO. Is there a message you’re trying to portray? Yes life is what you make it . You have to hope for a better tommorrow.and yet be satisfied with what you have today. What is your passion? Playing guitar, Formula 1 Racing and being able to put a sound track to my life. I am happy when I’m usually at home writing, mixing, singing, working on music everyday in my private studio.

Describe a typical day in your life Coffee, email, phone calls, strumming my guitar. Producing and engineering new projects at my home studio and Randy Wines Studio in Hollywood California. Is there anyone who has made a big impact on your career and how/why Rob Jacobs, we just gell awesomely, he used me for the biggest record of my life-Hell Freezes Over by The Eagles. Bill Kennedy, for letting me steal all his mixing tricks. Joe Barrissi, he’s been a great friend through the years, Helping me stay on top of my game. Ed Stasium, for all those great records that I got to engineer with him and Randy Wine. Shelly Yakus for teaching me how to be a great Engineer. I got to work with Shelly On Bob Seger’s Record. Don Henley for showing me how to write a hit song. Mic Jagger and Keith Richards for teaching me how to rock! and be cool. Ozzy taught me how to be humble. Billy Corgan for helping me with my singing skills. Joe Cocker called me son. Ive worked on two of his albums. What a great Artist and man. And, of course Herb Alpert, for being the best boss I have ever worked for.

Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. I certainly did and now I’m back raring to go for 2012!! Before Christmas I started the annual Santa Dash in Liverpool which was great fun. This was the eighth year Liverpool has done the 5km Santa Dash, and over 7,000 people took part, which really shows what a great community spirit there is in Liverpool. The Santa Dash is a really fun way to raise money for charity, and is also perfect for runners to get some last minute runs in before Christmas. I’m signed up for the next marathon so I need to get back into training!! Recently, I helped my friends Clas Ohlson at their Reading branch, demonstrating how to put shelves up on walls using Ryobi power tools. I have worked with Clas Ohlson for a few years and they are fantastic when it comes to finding the right tools for the various DIY tasks in and around the home. They supply anything from hardware to home ware. With us now being deep into winter and the cold weather really setting in, I hope you all find my tip about insulating outside pipes useful!

Thanks Craig

Job 78 = Insulate and box in external pipes In the case of frozen pipes, prevention is the key. To avoid the misery and expense of ruptured pipes, it’s as simple as insulating your external pipes and boxing them in. STAGE 1 Begin by cladding all visible pipe work with pipe insulation. This usually comes in both 15mm and 22mm diameter and can be cut with a trimming knife or scissors. Next, you will need to secure wooden STAGE 1 battens to the wall, just above and below your pipes. Cut your 2”x1” timber battens the same length as your pipe work and using your drill driver and a wood drill bit, drill a pilot hole though the timber battens. STAGE 2 Holding your timber battens in place mark your brickwork so you know exactly where you need to drill the holes and using a masonry drill bit, drill into your brickwork. Now, insert rawl plugs and screw the battens firmly to the STAGE 2 wall above and below your pipes. STAGE 3 Measure the distance between the timber battens fixed above and below your pipes, and cut your plywood down to size. STAGE 4 Again drill some pilot holes using a wood drill bit and use screws to secure the plywood firmly to the battens. Your pipes should now be covered and protected from the cold weather.

Health & Fitness

WITH CELEBRITY PERSONAL TRAINER, STUART PILKINGTON SUPER HERO FOODS The Winter winds are here and its already taking victims to the dreaded cold and “man-flu”. So how can we fight back? Easy. Stock up on these Super Hero Foods!

dare for maximum effect! Most of my food is chili & garlic loaded and its a great way of kicking that motabolism and giving plain food abit of flavour.

GARLIC Anti-Viral Allicin is an oily compound that not only gives garlic its pungent smell but also works in the body as an antioxidant. Like vitamin C, allicin helps to keep your immune system. Most people would consume garlic in its natural state in a meal although it is also available as a supplement that doesn’t have the same impact on breath.

Green teaPrized for its health benefits throughout Asia since ancient times, green tea has become increasingly popular in the West as its immunity-boosting properties have been understood. It’s made from the same plant as ordinary black tea, but isn’t fermented like black tea protecting its antioxidant polyphenols. An average cup contains a half to a third of the caffeine in a cup of coffee, so you can drink it all day without feeling jittery. Make it a SUPER super Hero and add ginger and lemon to give you a nice wake up and PH balance your digestive system.

ORANGES Oranges move over these babies are loaded with more Vit C than your average Jaffa. Most people know doses of vitamin C will protect us against the common cold because it is an essential antioxidant which your immune system needs in order to function properly. Most fruits also contain vitamin C - in fact, gram for gram, blackcurrants have the most though they are quite bitter. CHILLI Like all peppers, fresh chillies contain lots of vitamin C and pro vitamin A or carotene. But there’s more to these little fiery fruits than that - they also have pain-relieving properties that will go to work on a headache, while your body’s reaction to the ‘hot’ chemical they contain, capsaicin, makes your nose run and opens up your passageways. Go as hot as you

HONEY Research is showing that the delicate balance of sugars, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and antibacterial elements found in honey combine to create a compound with multiple benefits. The traditional cold remedy of hot honey and lemon turns out to have a sound scientific basis, not only because both contain antioxidants, but because honey can coat and soothe an irritated throat, and reduce coughing. Combine honey with a natural probiotic yoghurt at breakfast of as a desert later in the evening. Add these to your shopping list this week & enjoy the festive season.

How can a coach help? Many people associate setting goals with work but it is just as important to set goals in our personal life to make sure that the life we have outside work is one that we really want.

Ludus Lounge Bar As Christmas approaches fast a new venue opened up its doors on Bold Street in Liverpool on Saturday December 10th. Ludus Lounge Bar open its doors for the first time to a night of Al Capone, Bourbon and great food. Operations Director Luke Russell has overseen work on the venue which is over 2 floors for just on 6 months now and he describes it as a fusion of new and old. “We have aimed our upstairs area at day time shoppers, students and the local work force with a fantastic selection of sliders and finger foods to share. We have also added our own blend of coffee as well as our own Ludus beer and the venue opens up onto the square off Bold St facing FACT. Downstairs comes alive of an evening and is a real step back in time with a prohibition 1920s theme to it. A real speakeasy vibe with exposed walls and old oxblood leather seating. A very intimate Chicago feel to Liverpool’s most cosmopolitan street. I would like to thanks all the team, the staff and the likes of Urban Calm for their input for our launch night. We have to agree and already many of the opening nights guests have snapped up the basement bar which is very intimate for private bookings. Find out more at www.ludusbar.co.uk

Young people who sign up for the visit, which is sponsored by Cosmopolitan Student Homes, a member of the Cosmopolitan Housing Group, will spend two weeks in China’s economic powerhouse taking part in cultural, educational and sightseeing activities. They will also host a visit from their Chinese contemporaries when they visit Merseyside. As well as taking part in the visit, they will fund-raise for the trip and take part in awareness activities to learn more about their host country.

Successful applicants will not have to provide accommodation in their own homes, and applications are invited from people of all abilities and backgrounds. Young people who are chosen will have to pay £250, but will be given help to fundraise and help will be available in cases of hardship. Wirral Council and Liverpool City Council are working with Pine Court Housing Association to organise and host the visit.

Cllr. Ann McLachlan, Wirral’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Lifelong Learning, said it would be a marvellous opportunity for young people from both sides of the river.

“Wirral and Liverpool both have strong ties with China, culturally and economically, and we’ll be working hard to make sure that the young people who take part really benefit from any opportunities that come as a result,” Cllr. McLachlan said.

Cllr. Steve Munby, Cabinet Member for Liverpool Youth and Play Service, added: “This is a brilliant project which has the potential to completely transform the fortunes of the young people who are successful in winning a place on the exchange.”

Beauty

SEASON’S GREETINGS WITH JENNIE FREEDLAND

Head of Make-Up for Liverpool Fashion Week and Lifestyle Monthly’s Beauty Editor

S

o January is upon us and the weather has hit with a vengeance, bringing along with it colds, coughs and the flu (for the unlucky) plus Christmas and new year are over along with all the late nights, parties and hangovers…….. Now is the time to do a little internal and external TLC to help our bodies recover, recuperate and resist against the season. If you’re already suffering or just want to boost your system there’s a couple of simple ways to do this. You are what you eat, drink and do…..if you have a bad diet this will show in your skin. Having a balanced diet along with a hydrated system and regular exercise will ensure an optimum system (dehydration can increase conditions such as eczema or psoriasis) Frankincense oil in the bath helps to relax your diaphragm (stress is held here and can weaken the immune system) along with reducing fevers and as an expectorant. Also in the bath use pure lavender oil mixed with milk (to disperse in the water) to use as a booster for the immune system. To improve resistance elderberries and Siberian ginseng will improve any symptoms and prevent any colds getting worse, the ginseng also improves energy, no bad thing at the moment! Research has shown that 75mg of zinc daily shortens colds by 42% top that off with vitamin B6 and Vitamin C to keep that pesky cold at bay. Selenium is also used to fight fatigue, premature ageing and helps to counter effects of hangovers. If your skin is already suffering from a breakout – DO NOT PICK – patience is required for this and look for products with benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid to bring down

any lumps or bumps, reduce redness and to dry them out.. Two fab products are Origins “Super Spot Remover” and Eve Lom’s “Dynaspot”. Cleansing properly and exfoliating on a regular basis helps with skin cell renewal, which slows down as we age, ensuring smooth textured and even toned skin. Lymphatic drainage massage is a great one to help with getting rid of toxins and tightening up that skin. Try an express facial from Eve Lom @ Selfridges Trafford Centre, that includes the facial massage or even one of the legendary facials where trained staff carry out the treatments along with a body lymphatic drainage massage making sure you are truly pampered leaving skin glowing and you with a zen sense of well being. If you can’t do without your fix of makeup, Givenchy’s latest foundation promises to give radiance with a matte finish. This launches in February – this will be one that will be on my must-have list (Eclat Matissime Foundation Fluid £32.50) These are some helpful hints and tips to get you back looking and feeling like you once more. As usual I can be contacted by email or facebook if you require any further hints. Have a frosty, fabulous January!! Jennie x

THE BEGINNING AND NOW THE FUTURE.. Astrolloger James Griffiths is in demand, with his third eye insight.. he does reading for WAGS and celebrities all over the country.. and he writes for Lifestyle magazine..

How did you discover you were psycHic I was born in a haunted house so seeing and feeling a spirit presents became a regular occurrence in my home. I did feel at times as though I was living in a Scooby doo cartoon with hands and bodies appearing in bed rooms and on the staircase reaching out to me.

it’s difficult to advise anyone with what to do with their own life. But while giving a reading you may get an insight into the past or present of the person’s life from the spirit world or psychically so you tend to give examples of past mistakes and achievement which then help them with any decisions they need to make to have a fantastic and rewarding life.

do you see it as a gift I would not say it’s a gift, I have an ability that we all have and It can be developed and learned like any other ability just like driving a car, some learn how to bring it out of themselves and use it quite quickly others may take a life time.

you are a psycHic to a lot of wags and celebrities, wHy do you tHink you are so popular Everyone is the same. We all want to know the same things; will our families be happy and healthy? or that we are been watched over by family who have passed over. I think my work is all based on trust and integrity and I think over the last few years I have met quite a few clients who appreciate that. I will never repeat a reading I have done, to be honest as I leave the room the information I have been given seems to fade away which is definitely a good thing at times.

How do you feel wHen you get a psycHic premonition As a spiritual medium I tend to work with what I am given from a member of the family or a friend that has passed over to a person that is having a reading. I have to have faith and trust that what is been said or felt is right. Mostly it feels emotional what is said of felt is given with the best intentions and with love. How can astrologer Help people Astrology can help you in many ways as its based around thousands of years of research on how the positions of the stars and planets where placed at the time of your birth and how this effects the personality and habits of your life and those around you. wHat do you advise wHen you give a reading I don’t tend to know the person I am giving a reading to personally so

TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF SALE SHOPPING

Fashion

By Jenna Smith

J

anuary marks the start of a new year and for a lot of people is all gloom and doom. The Christmas party season has left you with empty bank accounts, unwanted bulge and not much to look forward to. But beat the January blues by following my guide to the sales where you can transform your wardrobe at a fraction of the price. Let your New Year’s resolution be to become a style icon in 2012. As soon as the word sale is mentioned people become frantic. However, the key to get the most out of your shopping trip is to take your time and go with a calm head. Hasty decisions will only lead to a bag full of “bargains” that you didn’t want. It’s also a good idea to take a friend who can drag you away from buying that dress you are going to slim into- chances are you won’t. Also, stop and ask yourself the reason why rails and rails of the item haven’t sold. Would you have bought it at full price? If the answer is no step back and tell yourself that you don’t need it. Steer away from items that will date quickly and instead think about classic pieces that will stay in your wardrobe for years to come. A little black dress is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe. It can be updated and revived every year with on trend accessories which will give it a new look. Another key piece that is flattering for everyone is a fitted blazer. It is guaranteed to nip in your waist without the frantic January trips to the gym. It can be worn over a dress, with a pair of jeans and heels or to the office and will always look effortlessly chic. Also don’t forget a good quality leather bag and pair of boots. These pieces are hard wearing and worth investing in as they add a touch of luxury to every outfit. Another top tip is to think ahead to next season. Even though the sunny skies of spring/ summer sees a life time away the new trends will come around before you know it. This year the focus is on polka dots, pastel coloured lace, peplum skirts and 1920’s drop waist dresses with bold geometric shapes. Look out for sale pieces that hint towards these trends and you are guaranteed to be a fashionista in 2012.

BUSINESS FOCUS...

HAPPY NEW YEAR! May 2012 bring prosperity and happiness to us all. I am Karl Fischer PR, I specialise in the following areas: Law:I am a business development manager (personal injury) for a large firm of solicitors based in Liverpool. I am seeking Motor Insurance Brokers and insurers with access to personal injury claims for my solicitors. If you have access to personal injury claims then please contact me. This time of the year is very busy for me, and it only makes me more determined to help others in business. At Lawyer Foyer we’re working to create a program where law students can work during their time at law school, they can volunteer, intern, and do part-time work at various firms and put themselves in a position where they can really hit the ground running coming out of law school. Law firms want to hire students who are gogetters. They want energetic, dynamic, hard workers. Even though many law

firms in the region will be scaling back over the next few months or so there will still be plenty of new law jobs available, they just won’t necessarily be in the usual places that students look. This is where Lawyer Foyer can really help. Everywhere you look there are people who need lawyers. These people are individuals, families and small businesses and there are plenty of them. If you want to get a job and think you’ve got what we need Lawyer Foyer wants to hear from you.

MATERNITY SERVICES with

Katie-Jane Rimmer

M

y name is Katie-Jane Rimmer (KJ), I established Sleeptight Maternity Services 19 years ago and I pride myself on the individual service that I offer to clients both nationally and internationally, personalising the required service to the needs of the clients.

Sleeptight Maternity Services provides a professional service offering:

* Sleeptraining * Breast feeding advice/support * Maternity nursing The service assists parents in the early days following childbirth and aims to help parents become comfortable with challenges that may be faced with when a newborn arrives and throughout their early years.

Upon starting, I will work with mother and baby to establish a personal routine and help settle them into this new structure. The amount of time you wish to pre-book will depend on your personal circumstances. However I usually recommend a period 6-8 weeks with a minimum of 3 nights in order to guide the sleeping pattern into an 8 hour stretch throughout the night. Routine can help assist in a quicker post-natal recovery. Whether you have a natural delivery or a caesarean my maternity nursing service will offer you support and guidance in any decisions you choose to make, for example, your desire to breast feed or to formula feed.

Breast Feeding Advice/Support

This could involve spending a full day in the home, offering support over issues that have arisen e.g. baby not latching on, whilst ensuring mother and baby find feeding time an enjoyable experience. I offer phone consultations which involves discussing worries and concerns of parents and together we establish the need of the child and determine which is the best way to move forward . I am passionate about my work and to be a part of those early days in a newborns life is wonderful through to the early years.

Sleeptraining

Sleep deprivation, for the parents of a young child who is not sleeping, can effect the home life, work life and even the relationship of a couple. Sleep training services gives routine to the child from bedtime though to the morning wake up, 46

IS PROPERTY STILL A GOOD INVESTMENT?

T

with Julie Zest, director of Zest Lets

he simple answer is yes, but there are factors to consider before plunging head first into the property market. Firstly a deposit is a must as 100% mortgages are a thing of the past and most lenders require at least 15% deposit and for the buyto-let market you would need a minimum of 25% deposit. If work is required on the property is it unlikely that the lender will offer you the maximum loan as all lenders now days are risk averse. If buying for yourself to live in weigh up the rental option and consider whether you will need a larger property in the next 5 years or whether your job may relocate, renting can give you the flexibility that you may need in the coming

years. Another thing to consider is the maintenance costs of owning a property, renting means you don’t have any unexpected surprises! If you are lucky enough to have savings, then buying a buy-tolet can provide a yield of 10%+ in some cases against the Banks and Building Societies who are paying an average 3%. Finding the right property in the right location is crucial. Always talk to a reputable local Letting Agency to ask their advice as to which types of properties and which areas are in demand. Once a property has been found then it is advisable to put the property in the hands of a local Property Management Company who will oversee the marketing of the property and

finding a suitable tenant on your behalf. Because the market has dropped so dramatically, there has never been a better time to buy, if in doubt speak to a professional who will give you all the pros and cons of investing in the property market.

Middle England Developments

M

iddle England Developments received approval for its proposals to redevelop the St Andrew’s Church, which includes a remodelling of the exterior and a rebuilding of one of the Grade II*listed turrets. Internally, around 100 new student bedrooms will be created around a courtyard’s Andrew’s Church was built for Scottish Presbyterians in 1823-24 and is one of the few surviving works designed by architect John Foster Jr. The building had fallen into disrepair, though, and Liverpool City Council spent more than £100,000 in legal fees to acquire the site in 2008. It has spent a further £150,000 on emergency repairs since. In August 2011 a deal was agreed by the City Council to sell the property to Middle England developments for £1, with an estimated cost of several million put on the whole project. A pyramid

monument to the William McKenzie (20 March 1794-29 October 1851) rests in the churchyard of the (currently disused and needing restoration) Scottish Presbyterian Church of St Andrew’s, dating from 1824. McKenzie made his fortune as a civil engineer in the Victorian era but it is the nature of his burial, or lack of it that has become legendary. It is said he was a notorious gambler and that one day he made a pact with the Devil to ensure he got a winning hand during a poker match. The price of course was his soul. When he became ill shortly afterwards he got worried that the Devil may actually come for him, so left instructions that he was not to be buried, but instead encased in a pyramid, sat upright at a table with the winning cards. His logic was that if he was not buried in the ground the devil would not take him. Whether he actually was a gambler is unknown and could be that the tale arose just because of the shape of his monument Stuart R Duffy, Director of KDP Architects said “The original design concept was to keep St Andrew’s Church as the dominant architectural element; the student scheme was to be subservient. This led to the idea of recessing the

proposed glazing to the student rooms and thus retaining the large arch openings to the Church. The original Church design had galleried spaces; therefore this inspired the idea for a central courtyard design, thus allowing for the retention of a central/ shared open space. This will create a dynamic space for the students to circulate and enjoy, thus creating activity once again around St Andrews. The proposed design allows for 100 suited student rooms, providing 20 rooms per floor – the top floor is a recessed glazed Manhattan style penthouse floor. The main central area will be an open atrium; this will be hard landscaped to promote the students to inhabit this private communal area.” Work begins on the development this month.
